Starting point is 00:00:00 It's time to go one-on-one with D.P. Coming at you live from the Coppull Chevrolet GMC Studios. Here is your host, Derek Pearson, presented by Beatrice Bakery, on 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticket FM.com. One-on-one on a Monday. Spring football. Busy week for Husker Athletics. I want to go up and down the list a little bit.
Starting point is 00:00:36 here but first we need to let Rico ask his question that he had locked up and loaded Rico sir hello what is your question there are 18 teams who have made the men's NCAA tournament with a losing record three of them are tied for the worst record going into the NCAA tournament can you name one of those teams I always think northeast Albany, Conicious, North Carolina, A&T. Two Florida schools and one...
Starting point is 00:01:17 Is it Florida... I don't know where the other ones from. Gulf Coast or Florida A&M? Nope. Who you got? Florida International, UCF, and Fairfield. Did I just say Florida International? No. You said Florida Gulf Coast.
Starting point is 00:01:31 Gulf Coast was good. Yeah. Florida, International UCF Fairfield from 95 to 97 in order all had 11 wins, won their conference tournament and made it into the NCAA tournament, and they all lost all of these teams, all 18, lost in the first round. Yeah, but I mean, you made it. Yeah, there were all 16 seeds.
Starting point is 00:01:52 So yeah, 11 and 18. That's not bad, as long as you get hot at the right time. There are multiple that made it with a 500 record. The most recent team to make it with an under 5.5. 500 record. 2018, Texas Southern, 15 and 19.
Starting point is 00:02:11 That's fair. That's fair. Like to be able to find, that's the beauty of the tournament. Is that, again, I wish there was some uniformity in regular season champions
Starting point is 00:02:27 versus tournament champions. Like, there should be some way of being uniform in how this thing happens. Because then you're just evaluating in a whole regular season. Yeah. I mean, the worst part is that, you know, all of these are from smaller conferences.
Starting point is 00:02:43 So the regular season champion from that season probably didn't make the tournament. So from a depth standpoint, does this make you happy, parity, balance? Like these teams get in. Does it matter that they get in, right? Because you got to think of the money that they make just by getting in terms. Just by getting internment. Yeah, it's great for them. And then the publicity. So you get enrollment is directly attached to your athletic program's success.
Starting point is 00:03:15 But people know. The more exposure you get, the better it is. So I'll ask, would you rather be a Cinderella team, or would you rather be the number nine team from a major five? As far as exposure, as far as- So Cinderella, am I going on a run or am I just? You're just getting there. You're just getting there.
Starting point is 00:03:37 Because the nine, there's no guarantee the nine's going anywhere either. But people will speak more kindly of you. Yeah. If you are a Cinderella than if you're Indiana and you go get run out in the first round. Yeah. I think I'd rather be. I think I would rather be a nine seed just because that means you had a pretty decent season in the regular season at least. But is that all you want?
Starting point is 00:04:02 But if you're a Cinderella as a power conference team, does that, still does that count? Yeah. Or are you just giving me whatever team? Yeah, I mean, I look, if you're Towson and you get in the tournament or your Florida A&M, you're going to go into whatever town you're in and everybody's going to know who you are and everybody's going to care. You're very popular, right?
Starting point is 00:04:26 If you're NC State or Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, who don't really care. They don't really care. like you really don't so there there there's that like i there's a part of it that yes says i would like to be cinderella if i could be cinderella and you can you know not a 16 because you know being a 16 and and beating the one seat is it's only happened once yeah but you're having a really good time but if if you're giving me a cinderella and i'm like a 12 and i can get it you can give me at least one win i'd take that over being a nine seed then that's assuming that you're Valpo and you have a
Starting point is 00:05:07 Bryce Drew that can give you a I mean you could be look you could be a let me just take one of these teams you could be a Lehigh and you know have one loss in your conference when your conference tournament and then you end up as a 10 seed yeah in that case I would rather be
Starting point is 00:05:25 but then you're still considered a Cinderella because you know you're from the ECC yeah but you're coming in at 30 at 25 and four. Yeah, but you're 10 seed, you're facing a was it 7, right? 10, 7 match? You're facing a 7 which is you're facing
Starting point is 00:05:42 Indiana. You're facing Wisconsin this season, who was in the top 25 all season. Right, so I don't understand. It's still a Cinderella. No, but I would rather be that true Cinderella at the deep end of a bracket. 12 seat. Like, I want to be a play in team
Starting point is 00:05:58 because you get, you get the entire country to yourself. Syracuse? No, but you get the entire, no, but you get the, First four to final four. Sorry, Beah. Sorry, Behan. I apologize. No, but don't you want to, like, the playing game where the entire country is watching you?
Starting point is 00:06:14 Yeah. But you can have a play into a 12 seed. Yeah, but I'm talking about the real play. You mean play into a 16? But again, you play into a 16. A 16's only beaten a 1 once. Yeah, but I think that matters. But if you, I mean, if you could be that 16.
Starting point is 00:06:31 I would rather be the 16 who gets national. TV exposure on Tuesday night or Wednesday night. All the games get national TV exposure. But there's only, those are the only games that are on. If you're a 10C, there's four, three other games on. Yeah, but maybe you get one of the
Starting point is 00:06:48 one of the two that gets on TV. Yeah, then it's a crapshoot. But either way, everybody's watching on their phone. Wednesday, but no, but Wednesday night, whoever's playing Wednesday night gets all the pub and all the press. I don't know. If I'm a Cinderella, I don't, I want to be anywhere from the
Starting point is 00:07:03 But it's also 12 to 15 Because was it? Well, you get paid twice. You get paid twice. If you win the play in and then you go into face the,
Starting point is 00:07:12 into the big pool, you're getting two pay days. Yeah, but you've got to go to Dayton first off. You can't control that. That's a play in game. You got to go to Dayton. If you're Joe's college
Starting point is 00:07:25 and you get in and you get to go to Dayton, you're thrilled. Yeah. Because the CBS trucks are there. ESPN trucks are there. Look, give me the 15. Can I just take the 15?
Starting point is 00:07:34 Because 15's beating a two a lot more often. You can take the 15. Give me Lehigh and C.J. McCullum over Duke. Okay. You can take whatever it is. People forget. Yeah, they try to. That was an Omaha, I think.
Starting point is 00:07:45 Yeah, 402-999-4620 if you want to text in today until we get the bugs worked out on the new text line. Ew, bugs. And then if you want to call in, it's the same on number 402-464-5-6-85, the number that you know and love. You can just use that one and be comfortable and soon enough, both numbers will be back in. We'll figure it out.
Starting point is 00:08:10 Yeah, there's supposed to be a crossover of service and the zip line folks who were using, zip-wit folks who we were using, they're just done. And then the new folks, we thought that they would have it together by then. Of course, they didn't. A lot of hours were spent Saturday and Sunday trying to get that stuff engaged in form but you can text us at that number 402-99-4-620 or you can jump on the video streams Facebook, YouTube, and Twitch and you can communicate there. So you'll be able to do that. Thank you for
Starting point is 00:08:49 covering up. I greatly appreciate it. I did. I said thank you. Okay. I thought you were being sarcastic. No, I was actually saying sometimes you sound sarcastic when you're not. I'm told that. A lot. You have this way of speaking where you sound very sarcastic a lot of the time. That is a conversation. To be very sincere and it's just like, that was rude. That is literally the conversation me and my wife have on a regular basis. It's not what you said, but it's the face you made when you said it.
Starting point is 00:09:29 Or it's not the face. It's the tone. of what you said. I said it. Right? And I'm just going, how you receive what I say is on you. Like,
Starting point is 00:09:41 that's on you. I'm just saying. I can say, Rico. See? Yes. How you receive the word that I said. You know how you say things.
Starting point is 00:09:59 You know what you mean to do. You're looking for a response. You're looking for a response. You know exact. No, you've been at this too long. You've, you've been using your voice to, to get your point across for way too long to not know how to say things in a certain way to get a response. You know what you're doing. Oh, she is hilarious. It is hilarious.
Starting point is 00:10:20 And she knows that you know what you're doing. It is hilarious because it is like, no, no, tone. Watch it. Rebecca. Or Rebecca. Hey, hey. There's a way. Hey.
Starting point is 00:10:37 There's a way. Hey. Sir. Derek. Right? So no matter what I. Like, I'm like, wait a minute. All I said was one word.
Starting point is 00:10:48 Like, how are you? And every time it's just. There's about 17 different ways to say the word, hey. And they're all different. No, but how you receive it has nothing to do with how I sent it. Okay. Textors help me with this because I look. 402-999-4620.
Starting point is 00:11:10 Right. Like all I want to say is sometimes my words are misconstrued, misinterpreted, misreceived. They received exactly how you wanted them received. And then you're going to be like, oh, well, I didn't mean to do that. But I can't be the only person who. Mr. Beauregard, I do declare. I do it. Pearl clutch.
Starting point is 00:11:34 Exactly. Right. Like, and it's constant. I can't be the only person. So you and Rachel never have that. Oh, no, we do it all the time. No, we have that problem all the time. I was going to say.
Starting point is 00:11:43 And like I said, I have not been at this a long time, but I know how to say things to get a response. And sometimes, I mean, I kind of agree. There are sometimes where I say something and she's like, yes. And I'm like, what? She's like, what? You said this. And I was like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:00 And she's like, well, the way you said it made me think. I was like, oh, my bad. Didn't mean it like that. Right. I was just saying it. Yeah, like, there's. it's not what in most cases I'm like I didn't intend it the way you received it so I'll stand by and re-say it and then you'll try to reach the same inflection again that you said it with before and then you can't do it
Starting point is 00:12:24 you can't do it like no see I said it like that's not how you said it's not how you said it so I that is a constant thing and I I'm it makes me better to feel like you did to know that you and Rachel go through it because we do it all the time. Busy week for Husker Sports coming up. I mean, I want to look forward before we get into what happened this week. Tennis is in full swing basketball tomorrow night at Ohio State at 6 o'clock. We will have a 9 o'clock post game after outside the box in Lincoln Stars at 8. And then Rico and Priscilla at 7.
Starting point is 00:13:03 I think it'll be me and the baseball dudes. six to seven. I'll be there. And then if they can make it, then they'll come through. Tonight, actually this afternoon at 1 o'clock, softball, finishes their weekend at in Lawrence, Kansas. They got to win yesterday. Women's golf is today in Arizona.
Starting point is 00:13:26 Women's basketball. The tournament starts Thursday. The women don't play until Friday. That's right, right? Are I saying all right? No, they play Thursday. Thursday. They play Thursday.
Starting point is 00:13:39 Yeah, they play Thursday. Sorry about that. I'll go through their schedule. I wish I had a two run by. But there are Wednesday games that are going to be played. Just doesn't include the Huskers. Volleyball, Beach Volleyball, Friday. They travel down to Jacksonville, Florida.
Starting point is 00:13:57 Look at them go. Do they play outside? I would think in Florida that the Florida schools would have outside beach courts. So I'll find that out. I know some of the California schools do. Not all of them. Friday, baseball down in Arlington, Texas. They will take on Northwestern State.
Starting point is 00:14:16 Beach volleyball has Florida International and Coastal Carolina. And then North Florida. Baseball is at UT Arlington on Friday at 3 o'clock. Softball, Wichita, at home Friday. Bowlin Stadium 5 p.m. How about that? Interesting. Friday.
Starting point is 00:14:42 Devaney Center 6.30. Women's gymnastics, the Masters Classic. It'll be on Big Ten Plus. Hashtag Senior Night. Nice. Nice and great performance, by the way. We'll talk about all that here coming up. Wrestling, the Big Ten tournament.
Starting point is 00:14:58 The championships are at Pinnacle Beck Arena. Four sessions over the course of Saturday. First session starts at 10 o'clock. Yeah, that's a big. Intensity. I don't know if it's sold out or not. I believe that it was close to. I'm not sure.
Starting point is 00:15:14 It might almost be sold out. Also, quick shout out. Speaking of sold out, quick shout out to Iowa Women's Basketball for selling out their arena for their game. I know we don't like Iowa, but that's awesome. Why is that awesome?
Starting point is 00:15:29 They sold out their arena for a women's basketball game, which hasn't happened since, is the largest crowd at a women's basketball game since 2000 what did it say 18 maybe you're giving out kudos to Iowa look not to Iowa
Starting point is 00:15:44 but to them selling it out to the people that ended up in the arena okay we'll just change the wording on it yeah not to Caitlin Clark Rico Kaylon Clark gets no shots out 38 points man so softball
Starting point is 00:15:59 has a home series men's gymnastics I mean men's yeah men's gymnastics Saturday, women's gymnastics, wrestling, it's going to be a crazy week. Softball. Yeah, it's going to be a crazy week like this is going to be. Big Ten, the final session Saturday at 3.30 will be televised on the Big Ten network.
Starting point is 00:16:25 So that will go on. And then, of course, swimming, diving national championships are in Madison, Scott. Madison, Wisconsin. sorry about that. It's like, why they moved out to the garden? Hey. Madison, Wisconsin. This is what happens when you try to read without tilting your head into the right.
Starting point is 00:16:42 Shout out to adding Rutgers in Maryland. Right. Like, it's like, what is going on? So, yeah, so it's a busy week around. If you are a Husker sportsman, you've got plenty to do here in Lincoln. That's a lot of stuff to be done. You have to leave the state. Oh, my goodness gracious.
Starting point is 00:16:58 I guess this is crazy. Speaking of television, the Big Ten announced their baseball television schedule. That's right. where I'm at. I'm going to right where we were going. Nebraska will play on BTN, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 times, and then twice on ESPN. 1 ESPN, 1 ESPN 2. First televised game for Nebraska. Michigan.
Starting point is 00:17:19 March 25th versus Michigan, which means it will be home. Cameras will be here. Michigan again on 27th. Friday, Sunday. Rutgers on April 9th, Indiana, April 24th. Iowa, April 29th, and then May 13th, May 15th, Illinois, ESPNU, ESPN2. The deuce. The deuce. Bowling was spectacular this weekend.
Starting point is 00:17:49 Like, I, just fun. Yeah, just fun. Like, I, look, I had a good time. Did anybody do the, who do you think you are or I am? Because it was like the 20th anniversary of that. They were all doing something. Like you learn that each bowler has their own. Each bowler has their own thing, the own chant.
Starting point is 00:18:10 So if they get a strike, like their teammates all have this thing that they chant. Nebraska's consistent in it. They get a strike. You know, the girl who threw the strike will yell Husker and the rest of the team has power. And that's how I learned, like even if I wasn't sitting directly in front of the Huskers, lanes that they were bowling on, I could keep track of what was going on.
Starting point is 00:18:34 Oh, that was a strike. That was a strike just from the crowd. A lot of the families, I got to meet Gwen and Amara's moms. Had a great weekend just sitting with them. Adorable women. Just the best. Oh, they're so good. So good.
Starting point is 00:18:51 And I met some of the other parents as well, folks who listen to the station, folks who listen to in the pocket. A lot of folks are podcasting it and listening to it. after the fact, but it helped connect. A lot of the boulders themselves came up and introduced themselves. So thank you for the exposure. But the fans, like the fans were there all weekend. They were there all weekend.
Starting point is 00:19:14 And then, of course, a little bit, a little bit higher in numbers on Sunday. More people showed up for TV. For TV, go figure. Yeah, and I, in case you missed it on early break. On the spillover. everybody was aware there were cameras on Sunday. So everything that was normal Friday and Saturday was no longer normal on Sunday.
Starting point is 00:19:40 Because everybody had makeup, like the folks who, like even the fans who showed up Friday and Saturday. Oh yeah, you got to look good. Casual. It was whatever. Roll out of bed. Come as you are. Like, it's a bowl now and nobody really cared. Sunday, let me, let me dress up.
Starting point is 00:19:56 Let me doll it up a little bit. Yeah, let me, let me dial this up a little bit. Even DP wore makeup. It was crazy. It was fantastic. Look at him. And then, again, a reminder for the nighttime shows and the weekend shows. Sunday morning pancakes was phenomenal.
Starting point is 00:20:15 I listened to a little bit when I went out. I was grocery shopping. I listened to a little bit in the car. Then I had it in my headphones walking around. Yeah. They went into some great detail about how the linemen are engaging differently, reacting differently and being accountable differently. than they were in years past.
Starting point is 00:20:34 Hopefully it translates into work. And again, it won't take long before we'll know. We'll see body types and everything else. A lot of folks are getting a wake-up call and a redirection today. Because if you spent some time not getting in shape for spring ball. It's going to show. It's going to show. And the pace is going to be crazy.
Starting point is 00:20:53 And there will be some folks who have to reassess the decision-making. Like that's, I always knew as a coach, I always knew, like that was, that was me being able to plant a flag and go, okay, this is where you are. Like, have you been taking care of yourself? Are you, have you been working on your game? Have you been eating the right stuff? All that stuff shows up for spring. And you go, hmm, somebody, somebody doesn't want to start. And you tell them. So this is what's happening today. This is, this is how you know where the program is. and there's so much newness. Like they said that this has been like an easy transition.
Starting point is 00:21:35 This isn't seamless at all. No. This isn't seamless at all. We like I don't know who the offensive starters are going to be at any position. I mean, is there anybody out there who's willing to, to wager that they know this year's starting lineup? I can,
Starting point is 00:21:53 I feel like I can give you one starter on offense. But maybe not because he's hurt. Maybe not, right? So we don't know. Right. I still feel pretty, no, I feel pretty confident about this one. No, I'm not sure you do. I think I do.
Starting point is 00:22:09 Go ahead. Travis Vocalek. He's not even practicing. I was saying he's hurt, but I feel pretty confident about that one. Look, if you're not practicing. I feel confident about one. That's it. He's not practicing.
Starting point is 00:22:23 I know. Like I, I, when he comes back. Well. as Jay says that's baby gronk like if anybody is referred to as baby gronk I have baby vocal I have a decent amount of confidence dad's in the building like that's
Starting point is 00:22:42 that thing matters yeah but still I mean there are other people that we're getting you know Fadoni Rollins well I want to spend the whole I want to spend the whole next segment talking about the names of people who
Starting point is 00:22:56 we know but we haven't seen enough of to know where they fall within this program. That's a lot of names. Well, that's the whole point. That's a lot of names. Like, we're just off a tight end. And we go, Chancellor Brewington's going, hey, guys, I'm over here.
Starting point is 00:23:11 Hey, I'm willing to take somebody's head off, but also I can catch passes. We don't believe you. I've seen it. We don't believe you. So we'll do that next. We'll go through some of the players and some of the names of people at positions where input is required, production is required, and we're not sure where it's coming from.
Starting point is 00:23:29 We'll do that next. Here on one-on-one. Download our app by searching 93.7 the ticket in your app store. You're listening to One-on-One with DP on 93-7 the ticket in the ticketfm.com.
