We're listening to one-on-one with DP.
Brought to you by Beatrice Bakery.
On 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticketfm.com.
Welcome back to one-on-one.
I want to thank the folks from Beatrice Bakery
for making this hour of radio happen.
Appreciate your assistance.
And again, I have had several people reach out
about making donations to support the student athletes on here.
And we say 100% of what you guys donate
It goes straight to the student athletes.
We have some impressive shows lined up and some new additions.
We will announce them shortly.
Some new shows.
Some new Husker athletes and some new coaches in play.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, I'm excited.
This is the time.
And we have to have more content and to be fluid because, again,
you're walking into Easter.
used to break and
see what this graduation so we'll have to be flexible along the way but we've had some pretty
good programming inputs coming up so and I appreciate you guys being helpful supportive
working on putting together some meet and greets and then with so imagine that you'll be able
to bring your kids down to to the station and meet the athletes take pictures get autographs
that sort of stuff working on those as well again
anybody that's rolling
to help with those
and then get
anything that's donated
goes straight to
to the student athletes
so we can do that
them signing items
and such
pretty cool
I gotta work on my autograph
yeah yeah yeah yeah
actually you gotta show me your
article no it's not good
I'm not no I'm not doing it
show me no it's not good
I don't even know what to like
I don't even know
I don't even know
it's just not I just do my initials
it's just not good
you just do your
I just do my initials.
Okay, and I'm just finding out your left hand.
It would explain so much.
Why does that explain?
It does because you're kind of a sideways human being.
There you go.
It's awful.
It's the worst.
Oh.
Ooh.
I've never had to sign anything for anybody.
I've never.
I just signed papers for, you know, whatever.
Don't show people.
I have to show people.
Why?
It's awful.
I don't know what that is.
Yeah.
EAC.
It's bad.
That might.
be the worst.
Yeah.
So there's, there's, I mean, I could just do like E and then a bunch of scribbles like everybody
else does.
And you talk about my handwriting, my handwriting.
Yeah.
Well, that, that's why I don't write in cursive.
Oh, my goodness.
Well, I mean, if I write normally, it's still, you know, terrible, but.
You could just write it out.
No.
Like I said, I could just do E and then a bunch of scribbles.
Rico, this is, it's not good.
This is not good.
I don't have to sign things for people.
Nobody has for my autograph.
Oh, my goodness gracious.
I just signed documents.
I, wow.
Wow.
I don't know what to do with that.
I don't know what to do that.
Nobody's going to ask for my autograph.
They are.
Nobody's going to ask for my autograph.
They are.
But we want to do meet and greets.
And the athletes have agreed to do the meet and greets.
Also, I do want to say a thing.
It's pretty cool as a part of what we do here in getting and engaging with student athletes.
But my policy and my rule is that, you know,
I want to be in front of the parents as well.
And so the fact that all of the young people who come on the station,
their parents are engaged, they're part of the process,
they've been invited on the shows, their voices are heard,
their faces are shown.
And the fact that, of course, of the, you know,
I believe we've got 60 different athletes at this point
who engage with us in that,
way that those parents show up.
And I tell you, when people talk about NIL and that sort of stuff, this is a learning
place and space for them.
And it's an opportunity for the personalities to get known, right?
That aside from the post-game press conference, whatever that is, right, it's a little
different for them coming here and show who they are, what their interests are, what their
real personalities are.
And the best part in meeting the parents is that you get to, okay, you go, okay, now I understand.
I understand where this comes from.
And I can say that I haven't dealt with any parents in this thing who weren't good people.
They weren't people of character and integrity.
It's been pretty cool to watch and to meet the folks.
And so it's indicative of what the program does well in that it's choosing the right sort of student.
athlete, at least putting those people out.
And part of the gig for me is identifying who those people are, right?
You're going to have the good folks and bad folks, not so good folks, even better
folks.
But a big part for us is identifying who do we want to invite into this space and who can
we trust.
And the big thing that happens is the parents also have to trust us to take care of their
young people.
So this was a really good weekend for that.
I met several of the parents.
this week are folks who come on the station and they've got lots to say.
And it's really cool to have them engage.
We've been talking about baseball and softball, Nebraska Athletics,
to celebrate 75th annual Jackie Robinson Day.
75th.
So, Rico, we got to break out the Jackie's tomorrow.
You got to break out the 42s tomorrow.
The hat I have isn't going to match with the jersey, but I'll wear the hat.
You know, we'll make it work.
Again, any tribute is a tribute.
It's a good thing.
That means I have to watch 42 tomorrow.
Uh-huh.
We do it every year.
Yeah, man, you've got to do it.
The Nebraska baseball and softball programs will honor the life and legacy of legendary former Major League Baseball player Jackie Robinson.
They're doing their games on April 15th.
That's tomorrow, the day commonly known as Jackie Robinson Day in Major League Baseball.
This marks the 75th anniversary of the debut of Jackie Robinson, who broke the baseball color line and became the first African-American athlete to play in the Major League Baseball.
in the league.
Jackie Robinson overcame significant adversity during his baseball, career, and life.
Dr. Lawrence Chatters, Executive Associate Athletic Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, said.
We can all learn something from his steadfast resolve and incredible ability to deal with the pressure he faced.
I encourage our Husker fans to reflect on Jackie's legacy and his importance to the world of athletics.
The baseball program will pay homage to Robinson by having former Husker Sean Buchanan.
throughout the first pitch against BYU at 2 p.m. Friday, April 15th.
And I can tell you, it doesn't get missed on me that it's BYU.
Just saying.
Buchanan played for the Huskers from 88 to 91,
who was second team all big eight honorary two-time captain.
The Gary Indiana native totaled 185 hits, 33 doubles, 21 triples,
24 home runs, and 140 RBIs to go along with 157,
150 run scored, and 42 stolen.
basis in 212 games with the big red.
Buchanan holds the school records for triples in a game with three against Wayne State
on February 12, 1990.
That is a lot of running.
That is a lot.
Buchanan is also the single season, an all-time record holder with nine triples in 1990,
21 triples in his Husker career.
Goodness gracious.
The softball program will call on former letter winner and stand-up pitcher Peaches James
Hall of Famer to show.
up and throw out the first pitch in Honored Robinson
and their season opener against
Minnesota
at 5 p.m. on Friday,
April 15th. Inducted into
the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame in
2018, James is a two-time
finalist for USA
softball collegiate player of the year
award in her four seasons.
A four-time team MVP.
James is a key force behind the Husker teams
that won 149 games
in her four seasons. The most
victories in a four-year stretch
in program history.
James accounted for 98 of those wins
compiling a 98 and 38 career record
with a 1.19 ERA.
She ended her career with school record
945 strikeouts and still holds
the Nebraska record with 44 career shutouts.
44.
She ranks either first or second in seven
of Nebraska's 10 all-time pitching charts.
She also wore the number 42,
which is currently retired by Nebraska softball.
Both teams will wear a special edition
Adidas warm-up shirt featuring the iconic number 42.
I'm giddy.
Pige's James, untouchable.
Those are numbers.
Like those are number numbers.
Like to go through...
She kind of, what, 98 of those wins?
98 wins.
98 wins.
So there'll be opportunities.
Yeah, yeah.
And just once again, University of Nebraska Athletics, if you're listening, if you're listening, and by most things, we know that you are.
Hi.
Hi.
Hello.
Hello.
Was good.
Can you, would you please make available the tribute game items that you display?
Please and thank you.
there are people who would spend really good money.
Like they did the black history thing.
Do it.
Please.
And they did a military thing.
Do it.
Like make them available and we will give you our money.
They like do it and they're like, look at these jerseys.
Look at they're so cool.
These are fantastic.
Anyway, you just get to look at them.
Can I have them?
No.
Why would you want it?
Man.
Why would I want it?
What kind of stupid question is that?
like I you give me the husker I mean I'm a collector of of 42 jerseys right so we would go around in major league baseball parks on those days and they would make those jerseys available and I have a collection of them you know as a matter of fact I think I've given you a couple of them you give me the A's one yeah yeah and and so tomorrow I'll make a decision whether it's I don't know I may go nat's 42 I might go astroos 42 I don't know there's something that we've collected along the way I don't know there's something that we've collected along the way I
I think we'll break a couple of those out.
But I'll bring the 40, they'll bring the jersey with me.
I'll hang it up right.
Yeah, right.
Right.
And then so it's a little big for me.
Right.
So we can, I mean, some of the others are small.
I can get enough of those.
But we'll display.
We like switch it every camera after every commercial bring.
Actually did that for my players.
So when I was coaching still, we would always hang the 42 jerseys throughout the dugout.
And so you would have, yeah, you have, yeah, like it was a thing.
So we could do that tomorrow.
as well.
But dear
New Brasca athletics,
hook us up.
Like those 42s,
come on.
Necessary.
Right,
come on.
Let us,
help me.
Help me.
Help me.
Help me.
Let me buy a 42 warm up.
Let me buy a Black History Month jersey
from the basketball team.
Like let,
let me give you money.
Right.
Like we,
do you not like money?
Do you want,
do you not want money?
Do you do not?
Is that what you're trying to tell me?
Is you,
as the university do not like money.
Right.
Because if you do,
you would create these jerseys
and these warm-ups for the fans
and let them give you money.
We will give you money.
Because they will.
You will give you money if you let us.
Let me give you money for a thing.
I just want the thing.
Right.
It's there.
You're making them.
We know they exist.
So for you to only make 30?
The template is available.
Yeah.
Like if you just put them in the store.
Just put them in the store.
Like if you go
Even if you just sell them that dog
Even if you just you know
Sell them that day at that place
They will get all in
I'm all in let me know that they're being sold
I will go buy them
I'm all in give me a Husker's hat with a 42
In the back I'm in
Please and thank you
Right I'm in
I'm all in
I want to give you money
They don't want it
They don't want it
They don't want it
Help me
I'm just gonna start a poll on Twitter
If if Nebraska
Athletics sold the
Jackie Robinson warmups
that they are going to wear
for baseball. Why not just do the jerseys? Will you, but would you
buy them? Well, why not just do 42
jerseys? You can auction them off.
I mean, you're paying tribute to peaches and
Jackie. Yeah. Right?
You don't think 1500 those
go out the door that day?
Easy.
Right? I mean, what if you
did? I mean, what if you did?
I don't know. I don't know. I don't know.
I'm still waiting for all the throwback jerseys to be sold in the games.
They won't.
Like, I'm waiting.
Like, who do we have to talk to?
They should.
They won't.
Who do we have to talk to?
Fans, are, am I, are we wrong in wanting these things?
Am I wrong for wanting cool things?
I just don't understand why you can't let go full Batista.
Give me what I want.
Could you imagine an NFL or an NBA team making like, you know, those jerseysies?
and they're just like like the the Memphis Grizzlies are doing like the Vancouver Grizzlies.
Yeah.
Like again and they're just like, okay, we're just going to wear these a couple times and you'll never,
you can't buy them.
No, you can't have it.
You can't have it.
You can look, you can watch us wear them, but you can't have them.
They're important enough for us to wear them.
You would not possibly want to buy them.
Impossible.
So, and also for the record while we're in this conversation.
I'm going to Nebraska.
It's just you on me talking.
Nobody else.
Can you just add like 20 big boy jerseys to all of the stuff that you order?
Like we're talking about farmers, right?
Yeah.
Can we get some big boy jerseys?
Can we get some, some, you know, everybody's not 2x.
Everybody's not 1x.
Everybody's not medium.
What's just saying?
You have, you have offensive.
of linemen who have family members
who might be larger
than a 2x.
You know, and I told
Nuri, I'm going to raid his
closet because he has stuff that
he just doesn't wear. He's got
shoes and pullovers that he doesn't wear. So I'm like
him and Banks, I'm like, listen, I'm going in.
Like, I'll make a deposit.
I'll make a donation.
Can I say something really that I
noticed? So, Nuri
posted a picture of him and
Teddy Prohasa, I'm guessing from last year.
or they're doing like the whole arm thing.
Didn't realize how big Teddy really was
until I saw that picture where Teddy is flat-footed on the ground
and Nouri is jumping in the air to do that.
And I was like, oh, oh, Norey's big.
When he came to, Teddy is big.
When he came down to Tanner,
which is when I was just like, oh, my goodness gracious.
Teddy is big.
Right.
And they put a plate in front of him that looked like the mini,
the mini saucer plate.
Yeah.
Like in his hands it looked like the mini saucer plate.
saucer plate. But it was the regular
size plate. And the food, I was
like, that's not enough food for him. It's not even
close. That's not enough food for him.
So there's that. Anyway, we'll close
out one-on-one and we'll set you up
for the captain's show when we come back.
