Back to one-on-one with DP, sponsored by the downtown Lincoln Foundation on 93-7 the ticket.
Back 1133 in the city.
It is Lincoln.
We thank head coach Mark Manning for joining us and breaking down some of what goes on.
In the fundraising season, it is wrestling and kind of behind the scenes on this team USA and the under 23.
And again, shouting out Cam McDonnell for winning.
winning and the fight for the right to represent the United States and the world championships,
which should be the way.
And it's always interesting to have those conversations.
We are now joined as we are on Tuesdays by Husker vens tennis head coach.
Peter Cobalt, coach, what's happening?
What's going on, D.P.?
Great hat.
Great hat game.
You know, I'm lucky I'm a simple guy.
If I find a hat that I like that fits, I just wear it every day.
So I kind of go through these modes where I just, if it's there, it's the hat I know it fits and it looks good, at least in my opinion, then I'll wear it.
So I got two of them.
You know, if case one gets dirty or whatever, I got two dogs.
So I left one of them on the kitchen table while I was gone and I came back from work one day and the puppy that we have absolutely destroyed it.
So this is the backup hat here.
I got to go and find two new hats.
hats for next for next year so i got a few months to figure that out how how many options does
adidas give you for hats well they always send they always send the hats but i like to just
i'll i'll go down to one of the store local stores here and support one of the stores down here
and try and find something that everyone here in town can uh can store is bookstore do work for
you the bookstore uh down on campus is a good one i look there i also look down at uh pbaa they're
they have a clothing store there and then uh if there's if there's nothing else there's also a
nice uh rally house the rally house down in the hay market we're all uh we're all we're all go and
check that out so i'll look i'll look around and then if there's something that's cool that's
different i'll throw it on but i also like you over here at alumni hall which is right across
street okay well i'm the hell literally uh you know cat of corner all right i've never yeah
i've never been there we need to get you in there we need to get you in there walk you over there
and let you meet. They got one that's anti-dog proof.
I don't know if anyone's got that yet.
No. If anyone can figure that one out.
Well, you know, but do we ever really wanted to beat dog proof?
Like, I'm a dog person and I, you know, I have a firm belief that dogs make most places better.
That's true. Like, it's just, you know, you know, that's just me.
There are people that would disagree, but I am a fan.
It is Wimbledon Week and I cannot miss the layout.
The return of the goat.
He's back.
Return of the goat, 44 years old.
As social media says,
Serena, new body, who this?
But reports are that she's still banging serves at 120 miles an hour plus.
I wouldn't be surprised.
To be honest, I'm kind of disappointed myself.
I haven't really watched any, any tennis the last two days.
It started yesterday.
We're still in the first round of action.
So I can't even tell you if she's won or if she's played.
So they've moved.
She's supposed to first serve at 1230 a day.
It's pushed back several times because go figure.
The goat deserving midday primetime coverage.
Of course, here in the States.
They're not going to throw her on at six in the morning
for their first slot on the SBN.
Yeah, it was originally scheduled it for 830.
They were like, nope, nope, let's not do that.
She's going to be the lunch move.
Absolutely.
Let's put her in.
She got a tough match.
She had a tough draw.
I don't even know who she plays.
Maya joint.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, sure.
Not easy.
Top 25.
Yeah, well, that'll be an interesting one.
Right, right.
20.
Matter of fact, I mean, Serena's the underdog going into the match.
Yeah, I mean, if you were, if I'm not a betting guy.
If you were a betting guy, that would be one that I would probably, that I'd be looking at.
That would be, there was one, if there was an upset that you could take, I don't know what the odds are or whatever.
I don't even know if I understand odds completely, but.
I stay as far away from it.
I do too.
Because the more I understand, the less I want to be involved in it.
There are too many things going on.
And then it is kind of the universal thought that Vegas always has more information than the better.
Isn't it amazing?
Right.
Always and they're rarely wrong.
The whole town's rigged.
Right.
Every sport.
I mean,
but it's just,
I mean,
every sport,
how do you know to the half point?
All the time.
Well,
there's splitting hairs on this one.
It's Serena Williams plus 120,
and then they got major one,
negative 139.
So it's not a month.
What does that even mean?
What is plus 120 even?
You have to bet,
if you bet a hundred,
you have to bet a hundred bucks against her to win a hundred bucks.
okay so you you walk you'll you'll you'll you'll get 220 back if you bet you got it which again
no not amazing no let's not like it just i don't need i don't need that in my life
like i like the fact that i sleep well watching sports um i had friends who who have you have you
followed much of world cup i've followed more world cup than i thought i would that's for sure
I've been able to watch a little bit more.
Some of those games are on in the evenings.
I watched the whole Turkey versus USA game,
which was a great game to watch.
I know we were playing a bunch of our backups.
But it was still like they scored the goal within like five minutes.
And then Turkey scored another one.
I was like, is this football?
Yeah.
Football be watching soccer.
It was kind of fun to watch.
Yesterday was the best day of soccer I've seen in my 63 years.
that's the best those three games yesterday were two penalty
penalty shot playoffs to finish two of those matches
I didn't see anything yesterday late late 90 minute
goals Brazil over Japan
Brazil over Japan in that game was much tighter than that was supposed to be
and then having Germany and Netherlands both get upset on penalty
things something feels I don't know if something feels
just a little bit cheap about the whole ending a game with penalty
kicks, you know? I wish they would just play it out until someone's. You can't. You can't. I know,
but just you want people, you want people passing out. Sit there and have the best, the best
shot, shot, you know, the best kickers in the world, the best strikers in the world, just
picking away at a net like that. I don't know. But they're missing because you're tired. They've just
played 120 minutes. I know, I know. Maybe I just don't understand it well enough. Well, I feel like,
watching the best, again, the best goal scores in the world after running for 120 minutes,
miss, missed the entire net.
Like it's like we had to, they had the best score of the world and he went over,
the number three score in the world hit the goal post.
Was this Namar for Brazil?
Yeah.
No, for Germany.
Oh, okay.
And he goes off the post.
And you could just see the coaches are just,
oh, no, that's not good.
Oh, this, you know, like you said,
no matter what you're thinking, at least get it at.
Right. It's like serving having serve on your racket,
like having the match, match point on your racket.
First serve, it's everything you could possibly want that you,
one serve, one swing the racket.
Yeah.
And you're the best tennis players in the world.
the best service of the world.
Everybody's watching you.
Everybody's watching.
You know, you build it up in your head like that.
It's definitely fun to watch.
I just think if you're playing for 190-some minutes
a game and then it comes down to, you know,
one kick of the boot, I don't know.
I rather enjoyed it.
I just have to.
Let me tell you.
But for the two matches, I was just like,
because, I mean, it's 10 shots.
And the goalie is like everything.
Like, you see the goalie.
going through their different.
Golly, it's like their time to shine.
Right.
Like it's what it is, right?
And they're doing all sorts of movements and fake movements.
And, you know, you're just trying to sit there.
And then in the end, the one guy, he made a stop.
He made the stop with his hand.
But the ball bounced under him.
So he was going to fall on it.
But he missed it.
Oh, no.
And his heel kicked it into the net.
Like he literally made the stop.
And he was just covering it.
And his heel kicked the ball behind him into it.
the net. And it just, I just went. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, in front of the world, in front of the world,
in front of the world. Littledon is a great showcase because there's some folks who are going to
be at the Lincoln Challenger who will participate. So talk to me about Lincoln Challenger
and what the folks need to know going in. I mean, we've got a week. Yep. Yeah, the players will
start coming in probably the eighth or the ninth of July. Some of the, you know, they're not
allowed to come over to the facility until a little bit closer to the matches but everyone's
on a different schedule and different flights and stuff like that but yeah people uh players and coaches
will start showing up on the 10th or the 11th over at the facility and they'll start getting some reps in
and i'm sure i'll be getting some phone calls asking to open up the building and stuff and i'll be
hey like sorry but uh but yeah i mean uh um adam walton who he'll be our number one seed he's uh he's in the
main draw i don't know if he won or not i believe he won i
He's a very good grass court player from Australia.
And then Elliot Spaziri, those guys are both in the main draw of Wimbledon right now.
So those two guys will be in Lincoln, and they're playing in the biggest tennis professional tournament in the world over in London.
So pretty cool for Lincoln to have an event like this going on.
So I encourage everyone to go online and buy tickets.
They're anywhere between $10 and $18 for the first.
I don't know, five, six days of the tournament.
So really affordable.
Come in, come out as you please.
Get out of the heat.
Yeah, the ticket lasts all days.
We're going to have some cool vendors.
You guys will be down there.
Yes, sir.
Coming to check things out.
So if you don't like tennis, come down and say hi to the boys here at the ticket.
And invite the guys down here.
They want to come on.
Absolutely.
We'll definitely try and get a few of the players to come down and do a fun interview.
I think that'd be cool.
So it you know the day one of in round one the number one seat center lost the second set had to go to tiebreak and third set.
Well grass is just one of those surfaces where there's in a sport like tennis, the better player usually wins on a surface like grass.
There's a little more chaos. There's a little, you know, players can out hit, you know, you can out hit yourself.
you can hit yourself out of bad positions it's hard to move on at the beginning of the tournament
the grass is really green and slippery so guys it's just it's just a little more awkward where if you're
on a clay court or a hard court there's just less things that can go wrong so that was the story yesterday
was a lot of slippage yeah that's how it always is i mean that's how it always is you know we don't
use cleats in the shoe i'll just rip up the whole cord up for the first day and you should put a little
more grip at the bottom of 10th.
You would, yeah, you would be,
you'd be dismissed from the tournament
pretty quick. Just tearing the grass.
So right away, because your shoes are
gripping the court a little bit more. But,
but yeah, I mean, it's just kind of, the first rounds are
always difficult. You're always nervous. The center's the
number one seat, obviously. He was down to, he lost
the tie break, was down two sets to one.
It's a lot of pressure, you know. That's the, that's the most
famous center court in the world as well. Absolutely
beautiful. Have you stood? Have you
stood in it? Oh, yeah. I've been there once.
Describe that for us before we go to break?
Just one of a kind.
It's just the most unique center court, the most historical.
It's smaller than you would think.
It's kind of like I would, I've never been to,
I've never watched a game in assembly hall at University of Indiana or,
or what's the Duke's stadium, basketball stadium called?
You want to go down there to coach Cheshkevillah, the Cameron.
Yeah, Cameron indoor.
So I would assume it's a lot like going to a basketball game at Cameron indoor.
You're just sitting somewhere and you're like, wow, like this is pretty cool.
All the things that have happened here.
All the ghosts of tennis pass.
Those are the vibes at Wimbledon.
Between the immaculate grass, everything's cut perfect, everything looks perfect.
Nothing's out of place.
Everyone's doing their job.
Nothing unnecessary.
It's just perfect.
Yeah, nothing unnecessary.
We're going to go to break.
I do want to talk.
I bench watched.
There's a documentary on Chris Everett.
and Martina Navvato.
Okay.
And coach, it moved me in a way that I, I wasn't prepared for.
All right.
So we'll talk about that with Peter Coval.
Plus your men's tennis when we come back.
