Starting point is 00:02:16 Yeah, I mean, there are, there's other football. There's other football for the level of football. Now, it's specifically NFL, it's a different deal, right? But, you know, depending on reports, I don't know, folks really appreciate what the NFL offers these days. It seemed like there's some folks unhappy about things, and I don't know why. But that's okay. All things in play. Bac, if you would please, sir, will you pay the bills?
Starting point is 00:02:47 Yes, today's show sponsored by Hamilton, Telecommunications, bringing you the latest quality technology and communication services since 1901. Starting point is 00:03:27 you know, we stayed into the final whistle and took care of the staff. Staff got some really cool things as well. And we had our two sets of square winners. So the squares, the numbers, the winners have been posted on social media. Again, another reason for you to follow us on social media so you can get notified whether you want or not. But that's up to you. That's on you. It was a busy weekend.
Starting point is 00:03:53 We'll go back before we go forward. first of all, shout out. And I want to, I spend time at the Sid and the Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. And, you know, Peter Cobalt, he comes in, he'll be here tomorrow. He comes in on Tuesday, and he gives access to how the thing works behind the curtain and how tough it is to get athletes to Lincoln and to get the right kind of athletes to Lincoln and to get them participate on the Big Ten level. But this is a gritty,
Starting point is 00:04:35 tough fighting tennis program. Same for the women with Hermanda Magro. And we appreciate them both giving their time to treat. Just kind of give some insight to what, you know, from the voice of a coach. Like we speculate a lot and we get to ask questions, but it's really cool to have coaches that you just ask. Hey, what's going on here?
Starting point is 00:04:57 Or at least give us your idea. And I like the fact that we're getting more information than we have previously. Well done. Well done to that. Big win yesterday over North Dakota for men's tennis. The women bounced back got a win. And then women's softball. Here's what here's here's here's I want to make sure we give flowers when appropriate.
Starting point is 00:05:26 because Bach, and color me if I'm wrong, but can you recall a time where Nebraska softball knocked off the number one team in the country? I know what's happened before. I can't recall it, though. Right? So text line, if you would, if you could,
Starting point is 00:05:47 kind of share what that was. But to knock off number one, Texas, and do it in a fashion where, you know, It wasn't just, you know, final or bad or that sort of thing. Nope. Nope. They got it done. They got it done.
Starting point is 00:06:05 And that opens the door because that means that you're allowed to imagine that this softball team can compete and can beat the best teams in the country. Like that, they knocked off. Nobody, no matter who they face in the Big Ten, no matter who they face in the country, This program, this team, has what it takes to beat the best teams in the country. And we'll have several discussions over the course of the next couple of months of whether Jordy Fromm is, in fact, the best softball player in the country. But now she's got people in play.
Starting point is 00:06:51 She's got partners in crime. So I think Nick Sainert said the last win versus number one was 2016 versus Michigan. So when it tells you that you can beat the number one team in the country, I don't care what sport it is. I don't care. If you knock off the best team in the country, you put yourself in a different set of conversation that in a critical moment head-to-head,
Starting point is 00:07:15 you can figure out how to knock off the best teams in the country. The men's basketball program, that's the conversation we're having. Women's basketball, look, we got close when it came to UCLA in the tournament last year because there was opportunities. There are opportunities. Wrestling. I mean, Ohio State's number two in the country, and you were one hiccup away from knocking off the number two team in the country.
Starting point is 00:07:47 And you led the number, you led the entire country at the NCAA tournament last year for the first two days. So it's interesting times. And there was some hype this weekend over Nebraska baseball. that this may be the deepest team and maybe the best team that's been around in a minute. Bach, you hearing any rumblings about Nebraska baseball? Because I find it amazing that the national people have eyes towards Nebraska baseball. What say you, sir? Well, it'll be fun to track.
Starting point is 00:08:21 Obviously, Nebraska sports just in general, as you're highlighting, has been onward and upward. I mean, doing really well. So we'll see. I mean, they want to take that next step, right? I mean, they've done a good job. They've won Big Ten tournament last year and kind of saved the season. So I know they're looking forward to a better regular season this year.
Starting point is 00:08:42 It's always interesting, right? That we can focus and there's plenty, you know, we're at 18 hours a day. So there's always time to talk to basketball and whatever angle you want to discuss and whatever thing you want to talk about. All of that's in play. But the reality is this. These other programs are, getting it done. These other programs are getting it done. And so much so that we get to have
Starting point is 00:09:09 different discussions, Nebraska wrestling did a thing on senior night for eight seniors, they put together their performance of the season. A 47-0-0 belt-to-bottom of Northwestern wrestling, and no, it's not Penn State, and no, it's not Ohio State. But my goodness gracious, you train to have success at the thing that you need to first. And for Kail Lourdeson to start the day off with a win, knocking off one of the top, you know, top 30 wrestles in his weight class, that's a big win.
Starting point is 00:09:53 Jacob Bandee was exceptional. Let me ask you a question here, Bob. Brock Hardy just had his 100th win as a Husker and he was the national runner up last year
Starting point is 00:10:15 Big Ten champion last year and one bad breakfast away from being a national champion. Do most Husker fans know and appreciate Brock Hardy's career? Do they know? I think those that are tuned into wrestling, do you? I'm not sure Nebraska basketball has had a player as good as Brock Hardy as a wrestling.
Starting point is 00:10:47 Is that a fair? Yeah, I mean, you're talking about, you know, steps away from a, I'd have to go back and look at it. But like off the top of my head, you're talking about, you know, get to be a first team all-American type to be in the conversation. Right. I mean, I don't know. He bowed after his, after his finish, after his match finish.
Starting point is 00:11:11 yesterday. And I felt the moment. And Brock is such a unique young man. And he, you know, he gets the opportunity next week to wrestle in Orm, Utah, Utah Valley, which is about our 20 minutes from his hometown, from his high school. graduated from Box Elder in Utah. They're going to wrestle in Orm, Utah, which is a little bit north of Provo and BYU. So right between, in the valley, between BYU and Utah as Utah Valley. And he will have fans and friends and family there next Saturday to watch him. And then on the other, Silas Albury. At 184, again, you know, does the difficult thing, drops.
Starting point is 00:12:07 away class. Russell some at 197, dropped down to 184. And his final bow to the crowd. And then not to pay, you know, you're waiting for it, but AJ Ferrari with a 20 to 4 win,
Starting point is 00:12:24 dominant. And we don't know if AJ has the eligibility to come back. I'm sure he'll appeal. We'll find out Wednesday when we talk to him. But Nebraska wrestling, Nebraska basketball, Nebraska women's basketball, Nebraska softball. Bowling has a legitimate shot with the best bowler in the country to make a run at the national title.
Starting point is 00:12:51 What a really cool time. What a really cool time. Forget about that gymnastics, Heather Brink and the women's gymnastics team knocked off a top 20 team here in the building. You know, men's gymnastics, that's perennial top five in the country. We don't talk about it enough, but Ty will tell you how difficult and how hard this thing is. And it's a busy week for Nebraska athletics. So we'll go through some of what's going on.
Starting point is 00:13:22 Of course, the main event, the next big thing is tomorrow night, 6 o'clock, PBA. And Purdue comes to town and in the next segment, we'll talk about Purdue and what's coming to town. But big opportunity. I also want to figure out what the priority and focus is for Nebraska basketball. Like, how do they manage this season? Right?
Starting point is 00:13:53 Game by game seems to be the simplest way so that you don't get out over your skis, but you start to have ice sports the Big Ten tournament. And then you tell me, because some fans would say that the Big Ten tournament is not as important as the first round of the NCAA tournament. Which is a really weird and interesting thing to say. So we'll talk about that. as well. Softball is
Starting point is 00:14:15 they've got a tough schedule. They're in Clearwater, Florida. Starting Thursday, they will face LSU, they will face Georgia, they will face Tennessee. Woof. Straight into the heart of the SEC. You get to make a statement. You get to make a statement. Track and field heads to Indianapolis. Women's basketball travels to Minneapolis. to take on the Golden Gophers on Thursday.
Starting point is 00:14:47 Wrestling, of course, they will head to Champaign, Illinois, to take on Illinois on Friday. Baseball gets it started in Mesa, Arizona. They will face Yukon on Friday. They get UCF. No, they get Northeastern on Saturday. That's a full day. And then they get Grand Canyon,
Starting point is 00:15:11 which is actually a pretty good, pretty high level of talent when it comes to baseball. Basketball then returns to Pinnacle Bank Arena Saturday against Northwestern. That's a 12 noon tip-off. Men's gymnastics, they travel. They will host at the Devaney Center Saturday at 2 p.m. What am I missing here? A women's gymnastics Sunday at Devandy Center at, 2 p.m. And then, of course, all the baseball that you can stand. Arkansas comes to town.
Starting point is 00:15:48 It's a big one for Petito Coveau. Sunday, 12 noon. Get over to Dillon, Tennyson. If you haven't been over there, like Buck, I really, it's a nice, it's really well set up in a nice venue. What are folks missing? Well, it is really cool. And when you get to the parking lot, too, you know, the first time I went there, you can see, you know, just stand back and look at Lincoln. and you can see Memorial Stadium and Pinnacle Bankering and all that stuff. And it's like, this is a vantage point I haven't been before. This feels very husker like. But no, it's very cool.
Starting point is 00:16:18 Yeah, you get a bird's eye view of every match. Yeah, I was trying to, you know, to measure, I've been on other campuses and, you know, you try to pay attention to it. But I absolutely love the fact that, you know, in this time that given that sort of access, the people want access to Nebraska. athletics. They want access to the Huskers. And I'm not sure that there's a better sport for it than tennis.
Starting point is 00:16:46 Because literally, you come in, it's free, sit where you want, watch the matches you want to watch. You know, three doubles matches, start the thing off, then six singles matches to follow. You know, two and a half
Starting point is 00:17:04 hours of tennis. Always something going on. Always, you know, momentum swings and lots of of chatter back and forth. So yeah, it's a busy week for Husker athletics and a good place in time for it. Because my goodness, the athletic department should be very proud of itself. I mean, not for nothing. Football gets it going.
Starting point is 00:17:37 Man, the rest of these sports are already doing their part. The other sports are doing their part. There's no other way to say it. want to go through. Okay, Bach, let's frame this for a moment. It is, what's today? February 9th, 9th, February 9th, 2026, right? We're going to go back in the time machine to 20, 20 and 2021. And we're going to whisper to our, to our younger selves,
Starting point is 00:18:12 hey, February 9th, 2026, the Nebraska men's basketball team will be 21 and 2, 10 and 2 in the Big 10 conference, and ranked in the, in the top 10. What would you say, Bob? A lot of, a lot of things going on in 2020.
Starting point is 00:18:35 I'd say that that's very unlikely. Hasn't seen that before in Nebraska basketball history. I understand. I'm from the outside looking at. And I'm excited for Nebraska. I'm excited for Nebraska fans. I'm excited for the young men. I'm excited for the staff.
Starting point is 00:18:55 I'm excited for the alumni who get to be proud of the basketball program. And there is a thing that's happening, that there is an alumni pride. that's rising from Nebraska basketball. And I don't want it to get lost and I don't want it to be just devalued or disrespected. But Nebraska basketball is 21 and 2. What do we do it?
Starting point is 00:19:21 21. But 21 and 2. What has gone right, kind sir? What has gone right? What is different now than ever before? in Nebraska basketball. Well, you always need the coach, the right coach on the sidelines for a while.
Starting point is 00:19:44 It didn't look like, you know, maybe Fred Hoyberg was going to get that, the right correction of players, obviously, involved, but they've kind of ironed some things as a program of what they want to do, you know, with their teams. You see a lot of the offense running through big men. We've seen that, you know, from Derek Walker.
Starting point is 00:20:03 And now, of course, with rank mass, you know, they've, they've, They've clearly become placed with K-Satomnaga, now Stanford, where shooters are going to want to come because you can kind of get in a role there. You know, and it's just all the players along the way, too, is getting guys to buy. I mean, I don't think it should be overstated, you know, some of the seniority on this team of, you know, whether it be to Marcus Lawrence and Sam Hoyberg and those guys that have been around a while to kind of scratch it out. But then, you know, so what's gone right is everything. I mean, this team is just, you know, through all, you're going to have players that have, you know, your top players going to have an off game or something. But through it all, somebody's been there to step up.
Starting point is 00:20:47 And that's been the case for, you know, Michigan might have highlighted that even though Nebraska lost, that game, you know, was kind of the biggest example of that. Now, obviously, the Illinois game goes south, but it was great to see Nebraska and Rick Mass specifically get back on track against Rutgers. And now you've got a Purdue who was limping a little bit there, seemed to be. be back on the right foot on both feet there coming to town and another chance to make a statement i find it faster is there here's the question i was asked by by one of the national folks is there anybody on this team that ranks in the top five in Nebraska history not as of not as of now is there anybody on this roster who ranks as a Nebraska top 10 in history probably not as of now. I mean,
Starting point is 00:21:40 rank could probably get into some conversations if they, you know, depending on the season goes on. So the discussion, the direction it started and then ultimately where it ended up was what Fred Hoyberg is doing with this roster,
Starting point is 00:21:59 the reason why the rest of the country is starting, is really respectful of what Nebraska is and who they are is how they play, that they're playing a kind, a standard of basketball that every college coach in the country can look at and say, that's doing it the right way. That's doing it the right way. Play the game the right way all the time.
Starting point is 00:22:31 And it doesn't matter who's on the floor. And it doesn't matter what the situation is. play the game the right way, that you do not have the superstar. They pointed out that they came to a game at PBA, and they were fascinated by the fact that every single player had their own fan club. It was like there was somebody,
Starting point is 00:22:58 everybody resonated with somebody. That Sam Hoyberg gets his applause. Rick Mask gets his applause He's the three There are the Bear K fan fans There are the Price fans There are the Frager fans Like we go up and down right
Starting point is 00:23:18 You go through the people that when Kail Jacobson gets into the game It makes a play the people that respond It is the Jamarcus Lawrence You know three from the corner folks That there are This is not a team of superstars This is a team
Starting point is 00:23:34 A really good basketball player who play well together, who just simply choose to play well together. And at 21 and 2. And Bach, here's the question before we're to go to break. What's more impressive? 21 and 2 or 10 and 2 of the Big 10? Which one has more sauce for the pasta for you? Oh, that's tough.
Starting point is 00:24:00 I mean, very impressive. But, you know, in Nebraska didn't load an easy non-con. I suppose you could to get into that conversation. I mean, I'd say 21 and 2. I mean, 10 and 2, it's right there, though, in the Big 10, incredibly impressive. I just think back to the James Palmer team and under 10 miles that didn't quite get to the NCAA tournament, despite a good Big 10 record.
Starting point is 00:24:27 Well, what's it to so? You know, I suppose you leave no doubt 21 and 2. It's hard to argue with. Right. But which one of those records and Texan, feel free to chime in. Which one of the records, the overall record or the Big Ten record, will have the most to say about Nebraska's NCAA rankings, seating? Which one, if they finish the rest of the Big Ten in a win, right, with wins, does that statement make enough that it
Starting point is 00:25:00 says you win the Big Ten, you're a number one seat? Is number, is there, winning the Big Ten regular season or winning the Big Ten tournament. Bob, do you have a preference? Oh, regular season by far. Right? Yeah. But if you want postseason success in the NCAA tournament, the clearer path is winning the Big Ten.
Starting point is 00:25:26 Yeah, it leaves on a good, yeah, the tournament leaves on a good note. So that's the discussion we'll have. What's more important? Where we stand. And the fact, I mean, let's not bury the league, the fact that we can have this conversation, a realistic conversation about Nebraska winning either the Big Ten regular season or the Big Ten tournament is why the sun is shining today in Lincoln, Nebraska. Bach DP. We'll be right back. Download our app by searching 93.7, the ticket in your app store. You're listening to one-on-one with DP on 937 the ticket and the ticket FM.com.
