Starting point is 00:00:00 It's time to go one-on-one with D.P. Coming at you live from the heart of Lincoln America, a 93-7-a-ticket and the Ticketfm.com. Here is your host, Derek Pearson, brought to by Canopy Street Market. A Monday morning, boom here on 93-7, the ticket. Glad to be with you after a victory here for Nebraska football. Overwhelmed, pretty good week altogether weekend, I should say, for Nebraska Athletics, Husker, men's basketball, women's wrestling. I mean, our women's basketball wrestling as well.
Starting point is 00:00:52 So it's just a good time to be a Husker fan here in the great city of Lincoln, Nebraska. I'm Jake Bachman joined by Jake Sorensen for the first segment. We've got kind of a special day. You might say, well, what time is it? This is one-on-one really ready to go here. We moved it up today because we've got to get to the icebox. We've got the drive, of course, Nick Sainert and in AD going into the icebox. Going to check out some stars practice as their season is well underway as well.
Starting point is 00:01:21 But we've got plenty of talking about sorts and your dolphins. We'll start with that. How did they? I'm reping it, Bob. I did. Are you, are you still cheering? My card was lost the other day, and I'm, I have, every week, I'm still thinking, should I cheer for a draft pick? They didn't hope they lose or should I hope they win? But it was quite a surprise to see the dolphins beat the bills.
Starting point is 00:01:40 Well, this is the problem, Bach, is that mid-season, or mid-season, just past mid-season. If you're smart, you tank, but tanking sucks. Tanking is not what the fans are there for. They want to see your team win. Like, it's hard for me to just bail on a season. in early November. That's tough. That's not fun.
Starting point is 00:02:01 So, yes, it's probably smart for the dolphins to tank for a high pick. But then he's yesterday where they looked like their world beaters. I mean, you know, Tua was not great, but he was good enough. Devon A. Chan was fantastic. The offensive line was great. Defense was good. Like, maybe they make a run. They got commanders in Spain this week.
Starting point is 00:02:22 Then they play the Saints and the Jets. Like, they can give back to six and seven. Yeah. And then probably fall apart like the, always do. But, you know, especially when you're playing the bills, the dolphins were five, sorry, two and 15 against the Sean McDermott led bills. I will take a win always against them, always. Yeah, especially when, uh, when you got J. Foreman walking in the building later, too. I know, I know you'll let him know, uh, that it got, uh, he can't walk past this spot.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Or if it gets a little hot, I might go like this. A little more dolphins gear out of the dolphins gear. Like to show them the phone. second. The Dolphins pride is back. That's good to see again for my card. It was not necessarily. They got beat down by the Seahawks. That was bad. Yeah. The whole, the Jacoby Brissette, uh, honeymoon phase is over. Yeah. All done. Oh, well, uh, they still, and then the reports of course, all weekend of them may be moving off of, of, of, of their quarterback, Kyler Murray. So I don't know. I don't even know what we're kind of both and disarranted. I have one moment of a glimpse of happiness. That's right. Yeah. Not today, but it might happen later.
Starting point is 00:03:27 It was kind of a weird week in the NFL. I mean, you had a few different upsets. If you want to call them that, I mean, the Saints beat and the Panthers for their second win. A little bit surprising. We already mentioned, I mean, I don't know if you'd call it just being the Browns an upset. They're both two and seven. But, I mean, the Ravens getting a win. Not an upset either, of course.
Starting point is 00:03:47 But the Vikings fall to four and five. So kind of some questions out that way. So kind of just an interesting week in the NFL, of course, interesting week in college football as well. before we get to the Nebraska game, I did want to point out there's some games that people maybe did not note as of late. Did you see that Oregon State loss? We did to Sam Houston, who was
Starting point is 00:04:07 winless at that point. Yes. Yeah, that's bad. That's really bad. Oregon's had just beaten Washington State the previous week. They were 0 and 7, they won two games. Now they're two and eight. Yeah. So still a terrible season, but you know, there was the same. There were
Starting point is 00:04:23 20 point favorites against Sam Houston. Yeah. I mean, again, like you said, This was the first win for Sam Houston on the season. So that's not necessarily good there. And I don't know if it makes it look any worse. I mean, I don't want to pile on. And where's the Mike Riley area? It didn't go as you wanted as you wanted to.
Starting point is 00:04:40 But Danny Langsorff and Mike Kavanaugh, some of those guys still out there. Of course, Frank Bray was the coach for Oregon State, you know, going into the season. But yeah, as if that was ever going to age well, it's not aging any better. I want to give you a stand real quick, Bob. Go back to you mentioned Jets Browns. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:55 So the Jets won 27 to 20. They had 160 yards of offense in the game, including, including Justin Fields, a nice six for 11 passing for 54 yards, a touchdown in a pick. They had two, they had a kickoff return and a punt return touchdown in that game. The Jets did.
Starting point is 00:05:15 Two touchdowns were via special teams in the first quarter. It is pathetic. Of their 54 yards passing, 42 was on a pass to breeze haul. A screen pass is a screen pick, 42, a 54 on a screen pass. They're horrible and they won the game. And they won. So sometimes, yeah, it's not always great.
Starting point is 00:05:36 You know, the other thing I wanted to bring up because I heard you guys on early break talk about it quite a bit was the Iowa Oregon game. And enjoying all the big tendness that was that involved in that game. I love that. Big tendness is a perfect way to describe that box. Yes. And Oregon has embraced big tendness. that's right the way and but i mean it's just kind of funny because um and obviously you don't
Starting point is 00:06:01 you don't do this on purpose but it's funny because i i will went down two to nothing and you're always thinking right in that moment it's like they got them right where they want them yep this is an iwill football game right going on right here so it was well and i i give organ credit because you know who who saw a 96 yard drive for iowa coming and grunowski had a couple of nice passes on that drive too so they melt the clock they get the touchdown on fourth down. And by the way, on that play, I know you have to respect and cover that, but everybody in their dog knew that he was going to run the football. Grinowski loves to run it. It's fourth and goal at the two. They put like three receivers right and two left. And so
Starting point is 00:06:40 you got to cover them all. So you have you got to be one linebacker. And guess what? He met him with ease. Didn't get touched on that play. So easy touchdown for the hot guys. But kudos to Oregon for moving the ball in the rain and the cold. The, the huge catch the beast and was awesome and then of course the kicker with the amazing name Atticus hits the game winner so it's always fun to see Iowa lose and then after the game box you see Oregon
Starting point is 00:07:04 goes and taunts the fans and Iowa responds by throwing beer can the same fan base that's waving to the you know the cancer clinic is throwing beer cans at opposing players so that's great Iowa well I'm proud of you
Starting point is 00:07:20 yeah and again I went to the Iowa Minnesota game a couple weeks ago and my Probably my biggest takeaway from that was there were shooters everywhere. I mean, you're going to see shooters of any football game. Don't get me wrong. There were shooters everywhere. And it wasn't just the student section. I wasn't even in the student section until the end.
Starting point is 00:07:36 It was so it is a lively crowd at Iowa, if you want to put it that way. But of course, the big news for college football in our circles is Nebraska beating UCLA 28 to 21, T.J. Latif, along with Emmett Johnson, both somewhat historic performances, if you want to put it that way. obviously big for Nebraska to improve to seven and three. What was your biggest kind of take away from that game? Well, I thought Lateef looked really good. I mean, you want Emma Johnson deserves all the praise in the world. We'll get him in a second. But the conversation was, can T.J. Lateef go on the road in his first start back to where he's from in California and win a football game.
Starting point is 00:08:13 UCLA, of course, had just got pummeled by 50 points against Indiana, had a biweek to recover. But they had won three straight games before that. They were playing competent football. and Nebraska got up 287 on them. 287, Nebraska scores their first four series touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, touchdown. And Bach, I'm telling you from the get-go, I never saw one single play at Lateef looked uncomfortable.
Starting point is 00:08:38 Kudos to the offensive line. Kudos to Holgerson for calling a good game. But the teeth never showed like, you know, a fumbled snap or you're losing control on a throw. He just looked like he was always in control. I think that's very impressive. And why you might have a very awkward conversation these next few weeks if he continues to play well after the by week at Penn State
Starting point is 00:08:59 against and against Iowa here in Lincoln. Yeah, it certainly could get interesting here. Again, TJ Lateef 13 for 15, 205 yards, three touchdowns, no picks, five carries and 31 yards as well in his debut as a starter. And I was, I agree with you. And my concern going into the game, again, from a very brief look at him against USC was like let the ball hit the floor a few times. So I was like, all right, well.
Starting point is 00:09:24 Three fumbles. Yeah, yeah. You're going to have to. So that was something we thought we might have to worry about. How much does a week of preparation, like you said, I mean, you got to give credit to everybody. Daniel Holgerson, the offensive line, no sacks allowed. Part of that being T.J. Lateef's kind of short, you know, not sitting there and reading the defense, kind of making quick raids and going. But, but Bach, he made progressions, though.
Starting point is 00:09:43 Yeah. He made progressions, which is, which is impressive. He wasn't locking on guys. No. So it did it quickly. So that's something you haven't seen a lot. from Dylan. He's struggled at quick progressions. I think everybody would say that about Dylan.
Starting point is 00:09:54 Great armed talent. I'm not saying he's not going to be the quarterback here going forward, but in terms of what I saw of the operation of his progressions, it was quick. And yeah, that's awesome. The Nebraska didn't have negative plays to hurt them. No turnovers at all for the Huskers.
Starting point is 00:10:12 Either team, neither team had a turnover. It's a pretty clean game that way. But here's the question. You just mentioned that box that against USC comes in in relief of the injured Royola and has three fumbles. That was a cold game, not rainy, but cold. You have a bye week. You're going to go to a surely cold game at Penn State and a cold game in Lincoln.
Starting point is 00:10:34 It was warm in California, and he was good there. The biggest question about TJ is going to be, okay, you played awesome against UCLA. Can you do that in the cold? It's not just easy like that. Some guys have issues holding on the ball in the cold, playing good football. If he goes to Penn State and performs well,
Starting point is 00:10:53 and then he comes back and beats Iowa and performs well in cold weather, now we have a legitimate big time controversy here. And that's a fun thing, a good, good drama, not bad drama, good drama, Bob. Yeah, it certainly would be interesting. And it's there. I mean, some people want to put it off and you're right. I mean, you've got to let these games play out. One game does not make you, you know, kind of the franchise quarterback,
Starting point is 00:11:17 if you will, here for. we're Nebraska, but it just, the game looked different. It was, it was a complete game, if you will, from the offense. Now, could have they have, if they were more aggressive or whatever, tried to score a little bit more late, sure, but all together. So, you know, say, well, I didn't score any in the fourth quarter. Okay. But as far as what we've seen and comparing it to what we've seen this year, you know,
Starting point is 00:11:37 no, no major blaring giant gap of time where just the, the team doesn't have much going on. Now, that rule didn't take care of his timeouts again in the second half, which I don't if they just need to hire a second half timeout guy that's really sitting on top of those things. But in any case, it didn't ultimately cost Nebraska the game here. The other conversation that we can't really
Starting point is 00:12:00 deny at this point either is Johnson's rise and what that might mean for the future. Certainly, you can talk about the NFL draft and all that. He's positioned himself well there. So we'll have a decision. Again, good drama because it's been a long time. I can't remember since
Starting point is 00:12:16 Amir Abdullah, anybody really making a decision about coming back for their senior year. And again, this might not go that way. He might choose differently. But either way, he is, he's fine. I mean, I talk about it and I phrase it this way because we've seen it kind of develop over the last couple weeks where he's really elevated his game and really started to put on these great performances, is that we've talked about this for what? Like, I guess since 2018, every off season you need a thousand yard back. But not only is he a thousand yard back, I mean, his total numbers are rising up there. second in the country in rush yards. So he's 40 yards behind a guy from Jacksonville State.
Starting point is 00:12:52 Yeah. But, you know, Jacksonville State's one, one cut level of competition. Of course, the big 10 being another. I mean, it's getting to the point. I started to kind of think about it. You're starting to think, okay, where does he now fit in in Nebraska running back history? And he's not quite a good. But, but here's, I'll give me. I'll say it. Roy Haleu. Yeah. He's like, he's not conversation. Yeah. I'm not saying Mike Broger. No, it's not going up that far. But yeah. So Emma Johnson had 28 carries for 129 and a touchdown also had three catches. So, I mean, that's two straight games of 30 plus touches.
Starting point is 00:13:24 He had 29 carriers, gets USC and a couple catches. So he had 30 plus touches and knock on wood, he keeps staying healthy. I mean, he's just been remarkably healthy this year for the Huskers. So you get a buy week to recovery even more for him and you go to Penn State and have Iowa. If he keeps this clip up of 130 plus a game, Bach, we're talking about a first team All-American, not just first team all big 10 he has been so important because that would be number one a three and one November if they win those games if they beat penn state in Iowa which hasn't happened here and he'd be a big reason why that'd be a big yardage on a team that went nine and three or eight and four and four and four and so yeah he is legitimately right now in all-American candidate because last year Caleb johnson was all-american in iowa were they nine and three or eight and four last year forget what i don't remember what they so the record did not i mean didn't hurt him in terms of not being a 10-11 win team. Like they,
Starting point is 00:14:18 he had big stats. But Emma Johnson's right there with him. Yeah. And of course, he did a lot of damage through the air too. So I mean, he's up to 300 receiving yards
Starting point is 00:14:28 on the season. We haven't seen Bach in a first team All-American since 2011 at Nebraska. That was Prince of Mukamara. I know that because SIP can never let that go.
Starting point is 00:14:41 It's been 14 years. Yeah. I mean, we've seen guys, players at Buffalo. be first female Americans and Purdue and Rutgers, but not at Nebraska. Especially the running back position.
Starting point is 00:14:54 I mean, it's not that any position is downgrading here in that conversation. Your first team all American, you're definitely one of the best. But of course, that is a position where you get the ball quite a bit and certainly have an impact on the game. So it is really incredible to see what he's done in helping carry this team.
Starting point is 00:15:13 But you kind of mention it too. do you think that he's that they you know we talked about it and in Caleb Johnson kind of the example there I guess the the question I'm getting to is after watching Penn State after watching Iowa before the Nebraska UCLA game I was thinking oh boy this is going to be I phrase I in my own mind I said this is probably Nebraska's last chance at a regular season victory based on what we had seen to that point right after the UCLA game again I think that was probably the best game of the year for Nebraska most complete game, you know, all the, you know, the early games against the, the, you can't count, Christian, Akron aside, right? Now, I'm not so sure. Now, I'm sure those
Starting point is 00:15:53 teams still will be favored in those games, but now I, I feel like Nebraska's got a shot. Did you have a similar feeling before that you saw? Yeah, I was concerned. Yeah. I picked that Nebraska to lose the football game. I picked, I said 27, 21 on the radio, a pregame show. And I don't regret that because I thought they were going to lose the football game. But, Latif, and you see why I said that because of how Nico runs the football. He's so good. He says such a pure runner back there and Nebraska struggled to stop him. But Latif exceeded my expectations.
Starting point is 00:16:24 He didn't make the mistake. I thought he could put up decent numbers, but I thought, okay, when's that big mistake come? The sack, fumble, the pick, the drop snap. It didn't happen. And so that's a kudos for him being coached well by Glenn Thomas and Dana Holgerson and Matt Rule and just having a good game plan. Because, I mean, Bach, we've seen the O-line play well this year at times
Starting point is 00:16:46 and still at a moment like the USC. They play well against USC and the one big sack was the sack fumble that hurt Dylan. They didn't have that moment one time in that game. Kudos to Latif for being mobile and being a quick decision maker, but you never saw him like get pressed and nearly even sacked at all.
Starting point is 00:17:05 Yeah. So complete football game, defense again. People like to complain about them blowing the 21 point lead. They still won the game. And also, don't forget, Bob, the offense, the way they finished that game was remarkable. Okay, UCLA scores with $4.50 to go in the football game. There's a great chance they're going to get the ball back. Never got the ball back.
Starting point is 00:17:27 Hustre's got a couple first downs, nine plays, 36 yards, kneeled the ball to end the game. That's hard to do, especially on the road. Yeah, I thought that conversation is a little bit weird. You know, I get it. You want, and at some point, hopefully Nebraska's program does get to the point where you just score. in the game, you know, they hurt their feelings. They're not coming back. So I can understand that. But when you're playing from the lead, I mean, they punted at the ball at UCLA's 41 and
Starting point is 00:17:50 punted. That's because they're playing with the lead. So they're protecting the lead. It's not, you know, it's not one of those playing not to lose or, you know, kind of versus playing to win thing. That's the right decision to make. And it worked out perfectly for him, like you said, because they were able to sit on the clock at the end of the game and get the win. All right, let's go ahead and take a quick break. Thank you to Jake Swanson for sitting in with me.
Starting point is 00:18:11 I will be sitting solo. So hit us up on the text line 4-0-2-46-4. 5-6-8-5. We could talk some hoop. Drink mass? Yes. Triple-double. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:20 I'm still going to argue, even though he's the worst of the three, KMX, trick-well-double, the most impressive so far. Delano Benton against Done. Yeah, there you go. You got that. Dallano-Bantz was against Donne. Delano Bantz was against Done. I don't know if that just count.
Starting point is 00:18:35 What was the exhibition? Was that it count? I don't even know how that counts necessarily. We can't count that. But it is what it is. ring mask out there, hunting assist toward the end of the game to make sure he got that triple double. Excellent start to the season.
Starting point is 00:18:49 I mean, before I let you go, quick expectations for Nebraska basketball after opening with the exhibition went over BYU, nearly 100 points scored here in this game. You know, obviously, we kind of know the team's going to be hot and cold based on whether to shoot or not, but I feel I'm an idiot. Maybe I'll fall into this once in a while, but I feel like this could be the special year. They made 17 threes, and they share the ball pretty well. Don't really still have a great post presence that's going to hurt in conference play. And now you get one more, you know, I put quotations by game tomorrow night against Maryland Eastern Shore.
Starting point is 00:19:25 Then you got three tough games in a row. Oklahoma on Saturday in Sioux Falls at the Pentagon will be a tough game. And then New Mexico after that, and then they play either Mississippi State or K-State or Kansas City. So we'll learn something about what they are. I mean, if you go 0 for three, it's bad. If you win two out of three, three of those great games, watch out. And one of the three, that's just being, well, that's Nebraska basketball. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:50 So good opportunities. And I'm excited for them to see how they play outside of PBA. It is interesting because I, again, kind of looking forward, I was looking at the schedule too and kind of thinking that. And my normal Nebraska basketball, mine kind of got in the same type of space. Well, okay, here comes the big games. Then I'm thinking, wait a minute, I'm confident in these games. This is a different feeling. And Sioux Falls,
Starting point is 00:20:09 and they lost to St. Mary's or last year, a tournament team by three. It played well in that game. But that's been, they have played well in Sue Falls. They blew out Oklahoma State a couple years ago. They beat Oregon State a couple years ago by a lot as well. So they have done well in that building besides the loss to St.
Starting point is 00:20:23 Mary's so for some reason, great support in that arena for New Brasca. So I will be there by the way. Are you going? Yeah. I will be in. Have you been yet? No.
Starting point is 00:20:33 No. No. Yeah. That'll be fun. I'll be at the stands. Yeah. That's awesome. It's a buy week for football.
Starting point is 00:20:38 I like the trip to Sioux Falls. Go watch the loops. My buddies go up there all the time and they're making the trip again. They love that trip. They begin there tonight too. Somebody else is playing in Sioux Falls tonight. Like they're getting all these games. Let me check it out real quick, Buck.
Starting point is 00:20:50 Yeah. I think it's like Mississippi State plays there tonight. It's something like that. Let me get this right. Yeah. Mississippi State and Iowa State in Sioux Falls this evening. Nice. They've had so many games there already.
Starting point is 00:21:04 It's interesting too. I always love college basketball. You get like the top teams playing each other at the beginning of the year. And there's all these great matchups. And it's just often kind of overlooked because college football, these other sports going on. But yeah, college basketball off to a good start. Yes.
Starting point is 00:21:19 We'll really start to get into it when Nebraska plays major competition. But that's it. That's a week away. A week away. Saturday. Yeah. So there we go. Let's go ahead and take a break.
Starting point is 00:21:28 Thanks again to Jake Sorensen for stopping in for this first segment of one-on-one. Once again, I'm flying solo. So text in 402, 4-6-4-6-85. give me your thoughts on the game. Of course, the Lateef, the debut as a starter, the controversy that might surround that. Emmett Johnson going off. Is he going to be here next year? Yeah, I'm inviting the conversations that we said to put on hold. We'll do that coming up next year on one-on-one with DP on 93.7 the ticket.
