Starting point is 00:00:36 We got a shooter in the house. As a matter of fact, I got to change it because we saw your mid-range game yesterday. And I was like, okay, Skagen. Like, let's do us. Bring it Ashley Skagen. Huskers basketball, the 13 and 2 Huskers basketball team. How are you? I'm good.
Starting point is 00:00:54 How are you guys? Thank you for interrupting your busy schedule. Like I know. Oh, no, it's all right. I'll make time for y'all. Yeah, well, we were just talking about it, and I said this thing, that this basketball team deserves to be known. Oh, of course. Like, you deserve to be heard, and you guys battled your tails off yesterday.
Starting point is 00:01:14 We did, but I wanted the W. Yeah. Well, that was. Come on. Right? Like, okay, so tell me how deep, deep down, how much fun was that? It was actually, like, really, really fun. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Like, I've never played in front of that many people before. Like, that's the fourth most in, like, PBA history at a women's game. That's insane. Yeah, yeah. Look what you guys have done. Yeah, but then you're like, but then you're like, but. But it was amazing. But I don't think.
Starting point is 00:01:44 It was, it was a great game, though. Like, honestly, I think we definitely should have pulled it out. We're definitely capable of doing that. But it was a great game. Like, it was going back and forth the whole time. So take us through the starting lineup introduction, and you hear the crowd. what's in your head like you got to get hype right? See it's kind of funny because when you hear them it's like you hear them but like
Starting point is 00:02:11 it's it's like I was in the zone at that point so it's like you hear it but you don't hear it it's like it's like muted yeah it's kind of like muted like I know it's all there yeah like I can see everybody getting hype but it's like all right let me just you know high five my teammates like it's game time like that's normally like and that's usually how it is out there except when I hit that three on the right wing then I heard it for the lead for the first time then I heard it you got that ball you got that ball and I'm sitting there holding my son and I almost threw up in the air and I'm just like I got a little baby can't throw it up there with little baby I want to thank you guys for what you did so Rico went took the families of the game
Starting point is 00:02:55 the last home game and you guys took pictures with with his daughter yeah and the joy and the joy on her face. She didn't stop smiling now. No. No. And it's weird because normally when we go around new people, people she doesn't know, she's very shy. But, you know, we're standing there.
Starting point is 00:03:10 And as soon as you guys start walking out, I was like, hey, look, basketball players. And she's like, hi basketball players. And so now anytime we see, anytime we watch a women's game on TV, she's like, it's my best friends. It's my friends. I was like, oh, are you friends with basketball players? She goes, yeah. I'm like, okay.
Starting point is 00:03:26 So, I have to get her out to some more basketball games. but yeah she's extremely excited i told her that each time you come that we'll take a picture with her okay she did say she wants to score inside though because i asked her you hit it during that game you hit a three and then alexis hit like a little turn around little hook shot in the paint i said which one do you want to score like she goes i want to score down there i was like well you go have to get bigger yeah she's not she's going to be out it is not on your side she's going to be on the perimeter. So through all of this stuff, you advanced your game yesterday because they started like,
Starting point is 00:04:07 okay, they think of you as a three-point shooter and you go, okay, I'm going to honor that by giving you some work. But then late in the clock, you got down and did a step. I was like, wait a minute. Did she just change her game? Step through mid-range jumper from the soft corner. I'm like, that's new. that's helpful.
Starting point is 00:04:29 I'll ask you, how comfortable are you? Are you a better shooter from three than mid-range? The funny thing is, is I feel like I used to shoot a lot more pull-ups than I used to. So I, once I kind of, when I came here, I kind of had to adjust and I had to kind of learn, okay, like how am I able to play within this system? And so for a long time, I kind of was just more of like,
Starting point is 00:04:56 Oh, I'm a three-point shooter, which I am. Like, I can really shoot the ball. Like, that's... You're the best shooter on campus. That's what I do. The best shooter on campus. Don't be humble. Well, I asked her that the last time she was in.
Starting point is 00:05:11 I asked her the last time we were in. Like, I wanted to know who was the best shooter in the family. And she was like, oh, there's no question. There's no question. Yeah, don't be humble. And she told Buzzy. She was like, no, I'm better than you. I won.
Starting point is 00:05:24 I'm better than you guys. I beat you. I think the women's basketball program needs to highlight that a little more. They might. Because you, Ani, and Jazz, shoot the lights out. Yes. Like, that's a group, like, I. Well, me and jazz are first and second, or second and fourth in our conference.
Starting point is 00:05:49 Right. Right now. 46%. Yeah. Something like that. That's a gross number. But see, my goal is. How rude.
Starting point is 00:05:57 Like, that's too high. Like, that's way too high. Like, that's a gross number. Like, in a good way. Come on. That's crazy. Yeah, it is crazy. It is.
Starting point is 00:06:06 So what's... Like, my goal this year, though, was to be 50. Okay. But seasons are over. I know. I'm just saying. You got time. You might have to take, like, one or two extra threes to get that number up there.
Starting point is 00:06:17 Yeah. No, I agree with that. You know, and Amy, I'm sorry for saying that. Because now it'll come back. Like, to do this. I ain't a problem with it. Right. You guys, the ladies on this team do such an exceptional job of being consistently available for each other.
Starting point is 00:06:34 And your system is not dissimilar to what the men run. I'll say this freely. You guys run it better. And I'm trying to figure out, is it because of shooting or is it because of passing? I mean, we kind of talked about this last time in terms of like. Like, obviously, I mean, they have KCe, they have good shooters on their team. And I don't think it's because they miss all the time. I mean, obviously, they make their shots, you know, majority of the time.
Starting point is 00:07:12 But also, like, if I know that I'm not going to have a shot, well, let me create something else. Or if Jad doesn't, like, she has options. And I think, like, a lot of the times if something, if, like, something gets taken away, it's not like, oh my gosh, let me just like jack it up because I, this is the only shot I'm going to get and I'm not going to get it back. Right. Like, I think to credit that, like, we don't really, again, care, you know, who has the ball and who's contributing. Because at the end of the day, like, we all know that we can. Like, everybody on the team is like, okay, like, this is what I do.
Starting point is 00:07:53 I'm going to just do that really well and help my team, how I'm going to help my team. team. So like, I think that's probably the part that's different. Yeah, I mean, one, I mean, you guys are just stone goal killers at three. Like that's, you can run all the other stuff off of your system because you make threes and people have to defend it. Yeah. I think you're underrated as a defensive team. And yesterday was tough because first of all, you guys are trying to figure out, okay, who's going to, what are we going to do with Caitlin? Well, and Warnock hit seven threes. What?
Starting point is 00:08:31 It wasn't, it wasn't a part of the scouting report. No. Like, I think she had one. Well, I think, well, her, her and Caitlin have both done, like, really well against us, I think the past couple times. And I think it's, sometimes it's really hard because she's very mobile. Like, she's able to move. Like, and I think sometimes, like, that can be hard.
Starting point is 00:08:54 And sometimes, I mean, people are going to make shots. I think even in the mission game game, we were doing so well defensively because they weren't making it. Like, I wish shots were just going in. And not all of them, I don't think were contested. Like, you know, obviously sometimes you're going to make mistakes. You're going to have defensive lapses. Like, that's going to happen. But, and that's kind of why I said, like, really should I got it?
Starting point is 00:09:22 Because, I mean, sometimes, like, those, I think on my. Michigan we were more on point what you did against Michigan was so much fun first of all watching you guys elevate we played it we played defense for 40 minutes like I it said I think you guys defend better than people give credit because you put on such an offensive show yeah like people come for the offense but they leave with the defense I love watching that I love watching you guys play defense you fly everywhere yeah well and that's what we've been practicing like each day practice we're like okay if someone if one of the scout guys gets an open bucket we're like no that's not good enough like go again um and i think that's one thing that was different from last year because
Starting point is 00:10:05 last year our defense was not like that our defense was not and like obviously you can keep improving like we can learn from what happened yesterday in terms of some of the the things that happened in terms of our mistakes but last year compared to this year is like night and day different like what's the difference though what is it is it is it is it is it is it is it is it Is it a player or is it? Everybody wants it more. Okay. Like everybody I think is out there like, okay,
Starting point is 00:10:32 we know that we haven't made a basket in a little bit. Like we have to get a stop. Like make our defense turn into our offense. And that like I think contributes to a lot of our offensive play too and how we're able to play with pace and all that type of stuff. Just because like we're flying around more. Plus there's more of you. You guys like a swarm of these.
Starting point is 00:10:54 Yeah. Everywhere. Yeah, even in the first group, like first group goes to the bench, and then the next group comes in. Yeah. And it's a different level, and it's a different energy. And now you're getting, you know, like Allison Weiner is adding to it. And for her to step up yesterday.
Starting point is 00:11:08 She is a dog. She stepped up yesterday and to do that. So let's go through some of the players that people don't know as well. Give me like a 30-second description of Allison Weidner. What is she as a player? Um, she's a gritty, tough in your face. Let me come at you. Like, I do not care how I score on you.
Starting point is 00:11:35 All about her team wants to win. Like, Allison's someone that you want to have on your team, for sure, 100%. Onyck Stewart is in the place where she was identified as a shooter. But you can see that she's put in extra work in the post. Like she's purposefully trying to be better. and defensively in the post. What's her personality like? Ani, how do I describe
Starting point is 00:12:02 Ani? Ani is like, last year she was a lot more quiet. Like instead of like kind of with her roommate, she was kind of louder with her roommates, you know, whatnot because they're always together. Yeah. Well, this year, like, we always will give Ani like a hard time and she'll give us a hard time.
Starting point is 00:12:16 And I think her personality has definitely like come out a lot more this year. And I think that definitely like shows with how comfortable she is. and also like i mean she realized that last year she was more just labeled like okay i just kind of want to shoot and this year like she was like no like let me prove that i can do this too so i think and everybody i think has come back like that and then even um with how jazz plays and her capabilities and how she helps us as a team like everybody i think this year compared to last year that has come back and the new players are all like let me constantly improve let me add something
Starting point is 00:12:56 to my bag to make the team better if that makes sense it does and the the thing that's caught some folks attention is the bench interaction oh the bench I love the bench loving they highlighted them last yesterday uh the the bench press yes okay so but they didn't know what to call they called like a push-up I was like what are you guys doing well they did the bicycle against Michigan and then the bench press yesterday so what give me give us the back story where how did it start so who's the ringleader Whitney brown is the wing okay and um and she'll be like looking at like little pictures or videos of things and she'll be like we're doing this and she'll be like you'll come down there right and she's like are you ready and I'm like I don't even know what
Starting point is 00:13:42 I'm doing like wouldn't you got to tell me what to do because I'm like I plus let me tell starter. You just have, no, you just have to be ready. I'm sorry about it. I was like, all right,
Starting point is 00:13:53 let me just, I'll count the reps when you do it. If someone makes a three, I'll just be counting. But I was like, I can't lift today. I'm sorry, guys,
Starting point is 00:13:59 I can't lift today. And so, yeah, she does such a good job. Like the bicycle against Michigan, they were practicing in the locker room for 15 minutes. They were quick with it.
Starting point is 00:14:11 They got put together really fast. And they, but the thing is, is the cameras didn't catch the good one. They caught the bad one. They caught the good one. They caught the good. one not on the live camera feed, but the one that went viral was the good one. I don't know how they got
Starting point is 00:14:24 it, but somebody got it. It went viral and everybody is in love with it. Yeah, everybody was like, oh my gosh, what is this? Well, it's definitely all Whitney's ideas. And she does a great job with that. Shout out Whitney. Yeah, shout out Whitney. Good stuff. Oh, so Ashley Skagen is with us. Can I ask one more question? It's, you're producing. So, so I know that, you know, I'm watching it on TV and they're talking about Caitlin Clark and how, you know, scrappy she's being, how much talk was there on the court between her and, and specifically probably jazz. Well, that's funny. Especially that one time when she, like, found her in transition and she was like, well,
Starting point is 00:15:09 there's no need to fly. Like, we are, like, we're here. Like, you know, come on. And I think, like, jazz is scrappy too. Jazz doesn't want to lose. And none of us did. And so, like, we were all just like, no, like talk your, you know. So, yeah, there was definitely talk.
Starting point is 00:15:26 But I think that's the fun part. Oh, yeah. Definitely the fun part. See, there's the Salt Lake Community College coming out. It looked like fun. There's the rock grader coming out. Okay. Ashley Skagit is with us.
Starting point is 00:15:39 We'll ask you to stay through the break. And then we'll close out one-on-one here on night if you're having a ticket. Watch live on Facebook. YouTube or Twitch. You're listening to one-on-one with DP on 937 the Ticket and the Ticketfm.com.
