Starting point is 00:00:00 Back to one-on-one with DP. Presented by Beatrice Bakeray on 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticketfm.com. One-on-one. Yeah, RICO dancing is like, you guys need to be on the video. That's true. If you're not catching the Rico room. I don't put my camera on when I dance. Y'all ain't get me.
Starting point is 00:00:36 No, no, no. I'm smarter than that. I'm just going to let you know foreworn. There will be times going for what I would just turn my phone on. and go live and just you. It's just you. Whatever. It's just going to be you.
Starting point is 00:00:53 People need happiness in their lives. I'm here to provide that. It needs to be shared. So we were trying to figure out this Y receiver room, right? Like, I think my curiosity about how the chain of command is going to work. will Scott Frost get out of the way and allow Whipple and Joseph to do what they came here to do?
Starting point is 00:01:23 That includes personnel on the field. Right? Because the play calls have to match personnel. In your mind, does this trio work? It can. But like you said, it all depends on Scott Frost. I can almost guarantee you Mark Whipple and Mickey Joseph have met and talked about everything they need to talk about.
Starting point is 00:01:45 Granted, they're going to talk about some more during the season, during the offseason, obviously. But I can almost guarantee those two are consummate professionals that they've gotten together and talked about what they need to talk about and who's going to be on the field for what and who they think can do, you know, X, Y, Z, whatever. It's all going to depend on if Scott Frost takes a step back and doesn't come to them saying, you know, I need this to happen. I need this play to be run here.
Starting point is 00:02:10 I need this. Do you believe that, yeah. He's going to have his hands. He's going to have his fingerprints on the offense. It's just a give. He's a head coach. Like, he's going to have his fingerprints on it. But he needs to allow his coordinator to coordinate the offense.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Is he just, is Whipple just coordinated the run game since Mickey Joseph is coordinating the passing? Now, they work together. So why give the title? Why do that? Yeah, the title thing. More money. You don't need the title to give money. You can just give money.
Starting point is 00:02:41 You got to add titles. That's why he has like five titles. Yeah, like it just seems a little weird, right? Yeah. That we just talked about whether this, whether the people on the offensive side of the ball, what are you raising your hands for? Sorry. Go ahead.
Starting point is 00:02:59 The Knicks just traded for Cam Reddish and Solomon Hill and a 2025 second round pick and all they gave up was Kevin Knox in a 22, 2022 first round pick. It's a good thing I didn't give you that Knox jersey. Dude, I like Kevin Knox, but he wasn't playing. And now I got Cam Reddish. United Cam Reddish and R.J. Barrett. Where does he fit in? Reddish? Yeah. Backup shooting guard.
Starting point is 00:03:20 He'll be backing up, Evan. You already have that. He'll be backing up, Evan. You already have that, that. IQ's a backup point guard right now. They're running him a point. Because Alec Berks is running a point right now with Kemba out, question mark, and Derek Rose still injured. Although he got cleared for rehab a couple weeks back, so he'll be back soon, hopefully. But you all need them. Oh, yeah, 100%.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Been a tough time. So it's Alec Berks-Aemannia quickly appoint Evan Fornier, Camerettus, a shooting guard, R.J. Barrett, pretty much by himself at Small Forward. Have you asked. Oh, we top in Julius Randall? Have you asked Carruthers to have Burks call you? No. Because I can't do that. Why not?
Starting point is 00:04:03 Yeah, it would be a problem. Why? It would be a problem for everybody, especially Ali. We'll be eating. We can't do that. Why not? I just asked him for a jersey. You know, they have to be signed.
Starting point is 00:04:13 Or game worn. It's a jersey. No, no. Seriously, if you're going to ask Alec Burke for a jersey, it should be a game worn and sign. Like, that needs to happen. Okay. But it's got to be like the old.
Starting point is 00:04:25 It's got to be, well, they don't wear them anymore, never mind. Well, look at you putting, now you're going to put, too much thought into it. I'm going to overthink it. It's going to be a problem. See, that's why I can't do it. So I can't do it.
Starting point is 00:04:36 That's why I don't ask for things. No, you ask for everything. But I don't ask for, like, like, things. I don't ask for things like that. Like, I'll be like, a shirt, a hat or something. But, like, if you're like, oh, yeah, I can get you a signed game word. I can't do that. Nope.
Starting point is 00:04:54 Too much pressure. I'm a freak out. Not about that life. Now I have to make it happen. Can't do that. No, sir. No, sir. Now all the Knicks need is for Zion Williamson to enter free agency and reunite the Duke Trio.
Starting point is 00:05:08 No, you don't want that. Yeah, probably not. Although he might lose weight in New York. You don't want that? No, you won't. There's still good food, but it's not. not Louisiana food. No, no, he will not, he will not lose weight in New York.
Starting point is 00:05:18 He'll eat pizza. Street pizza. End up looking like a teenage mutant ninja turtle. As he is right now, like it's currently. But the text on DP, that's an actual question seems more likely that Frost Ego will get in the way. I don't know if he has the humility to let coordinators do their jobs. So we were talking about that.
Starting point is 00:05:40 Whether, how is this going to work? because the players in the room, most of them have been there. So they're established roles, responsibilities, et cetera. Then a new passing coordinator, passing game coordinator comes in with his own style, his own philosophies, and a higher level of success attached to him. And then the quarterback coach and the coordinator come in. Now, the only offensive coach that remains, is Sean Beck.
Starting point is 00:06:18 Everybody else is new. He's got his, his guys performed at a pretty high level. Everybody else is new. So are all of those room new rooms? Is, can you have new coaches and returning started? How do you determine a new room? Well, because. Open competition?
Starting point is 00:06:39 Well, Riola comes in, Donovan Raola comes into an offensive line room. He's going to look at film, evaluate, meet the players, all sorts of those things. In his mind, he has some idea about what he's going to do, but the reality is he needs to see what it is and then see if it matches his expectation for what he wants to do. We don't know what scheme he's going to run, what philosopher we're going to run, he's going to run by it.
Starting point is 00:07:06 We don't know that yet because that'll tell us who the start running back is going to be. Right? It's going to tell us. Yeah, it's going to tell us. And then Whipple, what he wants. wants to do will tell us, is he going to throw running backs into pass protection more than not? Or are they an effective part of the passing game? You have to make those decisions and have those conversations. And then, right, as you decide, Whipple says, you know what, I want to throw,
Starting point is 00:07:32 I want to throw the running back six times a game. Who does he want to throw to? Who can handle those achievements? And are those people going to be specialists or are they going to be every down guys? right is there a first down back a second down back third down back we don't know right we know some of the people in in the room but we don't know how those are going to going to fit based on what whipple and riole want to do right because whipple has to talk to rio low what can we block like that's literally like what can we block in order for him to answer that then he's got to go
Starting point is 00:08:10 learn the players well that would constitute a new room room. If you've got to, if you have to learn everything about your players and you have to determine, you know, as you said, all of this, the blocking schemes that you're going to run with and everything, you can't have determined starters. You can't have returning starters because it could be completely different. So that's a new room. That's brand new. And also with the offensive line, there wasn't really many returning starters regardless, based on the way that they played. So, well, they would have had three returners because Juergens leaves, right? Sichtermen's gone.
Starting point is 00:08:42 Sichtermen's gone. So you would have had three returning. Left tackle, left guard, right tackle. But left tackle moved to right tackle one point in the season. We don't know what Teddy is or is going to be. No idea. First, he has to return from the injury. Okay.
Starting point is 00:08:58 Then he has to get right again. And then we'll see. If he can return from the injury before, I don't know where he's sitting right now with his timetable for return. if he can return during after winter conditioning before they get into the heat of summer workouts, whatever they have, that will be helpful for him in performing for Donovan and letting Donovan see what he's got as a offensive lineman. Well, some of these guys aren't going to stay where they are because different expectations are coming to the roof. That's why I said offensive linemen and not tackle.
Starting point is 00:09:41 If Riala walks in the door and says, look, we need to be tougher. And Scott says we need to be tougher. And Mickey Joseph says, in order to do what I want to do play calling from a play calling perspective, we need to be tougher. Some of the people who started last year may not win the job this year. Like that's a different space to be in. And I'd love to think that they've done. their group film studies, right, where they've looked at what they have coming back.
Starting point is 00:10:14 They have a pretty good idea about what they brought to the table new. Then we're led to ask the question, are they done bringing in talent on the offensive side of the ball? Because they brought in two transfers and a high school guy, right? That's just on the line. That's what I'm saying on the offensive line. You got the Colorado State, Oklahoma State, and then. I can't remember his name out of New Jersey. Do you expect the two transfers to be starting next year?
Starting point is 00:10:46 I expect them to push for a starting job. I do not know about to start. You wouldn't, you might bring in the guy from Oklahoma State specifically, somebody who was a starter. The reason he lost a starting job is because of an injury. And I think he has two years left. I don't know if you bring him in to be a backup. But again, would they come in to be a backup?
Starting point is 00:11:13 Not a coach. They're not coming in to be a backup. No. Nobody's transferring in to be a backup. No. Some people. Who? Who's coming in to be a backup?
Starting point is 00:11:21 I would think you might. Well, I would think you might transfer him because you're seeing at your current situation. No. No, but not. Nobody here. Nobody here. Okay. I'm saying if you're transferring somewhere because at your current situation, you are realizing
Starting point is 00:11:34 there's no way I'm going to play at all. You transfer somewhere. where they have an established starter who is not going to be there in the following year, or the year after you transfer in, and you have a better chance of winning that job. That would be the only way you transfer into be a backup. And that's also why the transfer portal will continue to rain, because it will be the land of second and third chances.
Starting point is 00:11:59 Yeah. Like people hate it, but I'm like, if you're in a situation and you know there's no way I'm ever going to play, you can go and find a place where you actually have a chance. I don't hate it in the sense, because it's going to allow you to get better if you do it well. Yeah. But Nebraska will have to constantly answer the question,
Starting point is 00:12:21 especially when it comes to the football program. What do we want to be? Do we want to be a recruiting space, a development space, or a transfer space? If you do it right, you can be both. I truly believe that. recruit, develop, and still bring in transfers and be a successful program. Well, there's a large faction of the fan base that doesn't like the whole transfer thing.
Starting point is 00:12:49 I know. Well, I think you're going to have to get over it. It's a thing. You're going to deal with it. It's real. Look what Alabama did. They recruit. They develop at a very high level.
Starting point is 00:12:57 You know what they did? Their number one receiver was a transfer out of Ohio State because he realized I'm sitting behind two NFL guys and, oh, by the way, two of the freshmen they brought in are are all conference level already. So what's he do? As a fifth, sixth ring wide receiver, transfers to Alabama becomes a starter and is the SEC wide receiver of the year.
Starting point is 00:13:20 That's everybody's dream story. Doesn't happen all the time. Right? Doesn't happen. But that's what the transfer portal is for. I would, I'll say this before we go to break. Given the state of the rooms, I would have thought more transfers
Starting point is 00:13:38 from the on the offensive wine would have been the thing. Maybe Donovan's talked to him and they really like what he's saying. The fan base has said in order to fix the program, the line has to be better. The easiest, quickest way to address that is through the transfer portal. It would be the easiest. Maybe he's a hell of a developer. I just find that to be interesting. Okay.
Starting point is 00:14:10 Well, toward a break, final segment of one-on-one. and then for for for shan today Terrell Farley will be in studio the first guest 1130 I don't know what's the guy's name what's his name something about a Mike Joe
