A couple of things to dive into Lady Huskers, 13 and 2.
They head directly into a combat with Indiana, number six, Indiana tonight.
Number six, Indiana.
This is after Iowa, and then, you know, they get Iowa next.
The gauntlet is real.
Number six, Indiana.
This is a team that seems to be building itself towards a tournament run
because they made a point to face UCon, South Carolina, Kentucky,
in its extra games, which they didn't get win.
They beat Kentucky, but they lost to the other top 10 teams that they played.
and then they went and beat Maryland.
They beat number six Maryland.
They've got three bigs that they rotate.
They have three post-up players that they rotate,
and they shoot exceptionally well.
This will be a game of runs.
This will be a game of, of, can I get a stop late in the shot clock?
As you watch this game tonight, both teams have the ability to bust you up late with the three.
Both shoot the three pretty well.
Even the post players from Indiana can shoot three.
They've got the same kind of depth of bench.
Grace Burger is kind of their energy source.
They flow with her, so she's their Jazz Shelly,
the one that kind of gets them the juice when they need it and turns it on.
But it's important.
This is an important ball game.
This is a big.
This is a big one.
Looking forward to it.
They've got Indiana and Iowa back to back.
For men's basketball,
they had to Purdue,
number seven,
13 and 2.
And then they get a couple of days break,
and then Indiana comes to town on Monday.
We will, in fact,
host a post-game show tonight
after the women's game.
Big Sky's going to run.
He's got to put together his own show from 6 to 7.30.
We'll do the postgame show immediately following that.
And we'll begin to journal the journey from now until the tournament for the Big Ten conference
and see what happens after that.
Rico, on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being absolutely in the tournament.
One being absolutely not.
Where do you rank the Husker women as far as the NCAA tournament?
10.
In?
Yes.
All the way in.
Yes.
Easily.
Easily.
It's not a sitting around wondering if you're going to get in.
It's just a sitting around wondering what seed you're going to be.
They're in.
Is this the top half of the Big Ten team?
Or are they on that cusp?
Are they on that line?
Trying to think of the Big Ten right now.
Maryland, Michigan, Indiana.
Loaded, loaded,
Iowa.
Loaded, loaded, loaded, loaded.
Who else in the Big Ten is good?
Or is just those four?
Well, everybody else falls in pack.
Indiana, Michigan, Maryland, Ohio State, Northwestern.
Ohio State.
Ohio State Northwestern.
It's kind of the space that you would put those in.
Yeah, I put them top half.
Right?
Yeah.
That's fair.
They beat Michigan.
They could have.
slash should have beat Iowa.
So they're just behind Iowa.
Currently, if you rank them, Indiana, Michigan, Maryland, Ohio State, Northwestern,
Iowa, Nebraska.
And then behind them, Purdue, Minnesota, Michigan State, Michigan State,
who got the win over Nebraska, Penn State, Illinois, Rutgers, Wisconsin.
Yeah, no, they're top half because, like I said, they beat Michigan.
They should have, slash could have beat Iowa.
We'll see what happens with Indiana.
And I'd put them against anybody else in the conference.
And Purdue's on a five-game win streak.
They've got the – Indiana has a seven-game win streak.
They're going into tonight's game with a seven-game win streak.
Do you have to stick with an odd number?
Sorry about it.
You know, I'm just pointing out that, you know, they're 12 and 2.
Michigan's 13 and 2.
Of course, you know, Nebraska beat them.
Maryland is at 12 and 4.
Ohio State is at 12 and 3.
Northwestern at 10 and 4.
Iowa at 8 and 4 Nebraska 13 and 2 Purdue 11 and 4 Minnesota and everybody else below that are below
Minnesota's 9 and 8 Michigan's 8 and 8 Penn State 7 and 6 and then the final three
Illinois records Wisconsin all under 500 yeah no Nebraska I put them against anybody in the big 10 conference
and I want to say you either chalk up the W or it's coming down to the last couple of
minutes to see who pulls away or who gets that last second shot up.
Maryland really is the only, granted, they haven't played Indiana yet.
Maryland is the only team that scares me for this women's team.
This is the only team.
Yeah, I mean, I think I saw what they could do last year, and I'm only assuming they got better.
They got deeper.
Yeah.
And I don't know, with how fast they run to be deeper and have people you can just pull off the bench and keep running at that pace, I don't like that.
Well, I think that's the difference between the bottom of the Big Ten and the women's conference and the top.
The top has depth.
It has depth.
They all have somebody that can go get them 20.
They all somebody that can rebound.
They all have all that.
But it's the bench play.
And then three-point shooting.
Three-point shooting will ultimately determine how Big Ten basketball is played in the women's sector of this thing.
So it's going to be fun to kind of watch.
Again, this is a big one tonight.
I don't want to.
It's going to be fun.
You don't want to go too far into it, but my goodness gracious.
That's a really good Indiana basketball team.
And again, the men, they're headed to Purdue.
Look, they're 13 and they are so big.
Is Purdue the biggest team?
Yes.
No, they are.
Yeah.
Right?
Like, it's not even fair.
They are easily the biggest team in the conference.
Like, they have two guys who look down on, not look down like in that sort of way,
but like they literally have to point their heads down to look at Kofi Coburn.
That's how big Purdue is.
Like Derek Walker was amazing against Kofi,
and he is going to have to be doubly amazing against Purdue's behemoths.
They're big.
Like I'm looking at the game notes, and Mike, yeah.
Yes.
This is a big question.
I don't know how they do it,
but they always have at least one person over seven feet tall.
Yeah, this is, and these are physical.
seven footers.
They're not the skinny boys that like to sit out and shoot
threes. No, these are guys that'll get in the paint and
bang. Yeah.
Nebraska's last win over Purdue was 2019.
This was the Cam Mac triple
double game
at PBA.
Might need another one of those.
Well, I don't care who gets it.
You might need something.
Trey McGowan's is cleared, by the way.
Easy.
That.
Easy.
He ain't played.
He's not going to play yet.
We saw him.
I don't know if you saw the videos of him dunking.
Oh, yeah.
I saw that.
I saw that and I immediately thought, okay, one of the doctors going to meet with him because I think he's good.
And tell him no.
Yeah, and tell him you're good, but I'd wait.
He showed some videos of his individual workouts.
Do you work in?
Like, we like to put ourselves in their space physically.
They're different.
from us.
Did they put a spring in his foot?
Is that what they did?
They cut his foot open, fixed whatever was wrong, and they're like, you know what we're
going to do?
We're going to put some springs in here.
You know, there's slinkies in there, man, just to watch.
It'll work.
Well, it's that thing where you go, okay, from a physical standpoint, you think of basketball
players as being, you know, trim.
Hmm?
I was like, no, these guys are strong.
Like, they're better athletes than we are.
By a lot.
Yeah.
I can't argue with that.
Sometimes we forget.
Like, you can be in the, I've said it before, you mean the best shape of your life,
but you get on a basketball court, you run up and down a couple of times, and you're gassed.
Like, knees to, hands to knees right away.
You're gas.
It's a different type of movement.
Like, I saw Derek Walker.
I saw Derek.
And when you're around, Derek, you forget for a moment how big he is.
and then he stands up and spreads out
and you went,
oh.
And he's undersized.
Yeah.
Like watching him against Kofi.
And to watch him work.
And we've talked about Errador's Andre,
his body changing,
that his body has changed.
Like he's growing into his man body.
But the other thing is,
is that he's still not Kofi.
And when Purdue.
takes the floor tomorrow night you're just going to go and that's different that's a big human
being so when people talk recruiting and they talk you know transfer portal you're going to go out
and look for people that can bang with kofi backburn i'm just not sure you're going to find
you got to go overseas like peru does and get those big guys because that's all their bigs all their
bigs are from overseas i want them to stop but they can't he he loves it so much i want them to stop or
i want them to share no
There's something about West Lafayette that just makes Eastern European basketball players feel right at home.
Yeah, like, did we do a poor job of asking Thor what the options were?
He's on an island.
That's different.
Well, at least he knows.
Yeah, that's true.
I mean, you've got something from France.
We got to ask those guys.
We've got to get Eduardo Andre on the phone with his boys back in.
in France to see if they've got anybody else.
Or ask the gymnast, you know, they've got...
Yeah, you got Italy.
Yeah, you get...
Can we make a pipeline from Europe to Nebraska for basketball players?
For all the bigs.
Yeah.
Like to get them over here.
You get a point guard from Italy.
Italian point guards are pretty good.
I think I want...
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I just want to, like, the natural point.
France has go...
France, France, I would go more along the wings.
I would go for a wing from France.
Shooting guards go to Brazil.
I'm looking for the nephews of Oscar Schmidt.
You got to go further in inland and in Europe to get a big.
You head to Germany or something.
You can go to Argentina and Brazil for bigs.
That's a Fred Hoyberg big.
If you want a Big 10 big, you got to go to like Germany.
You're making it really difficult for Nebraska to recruit.
You're telling me it's too far along.
I'm just saying.
If you want to go to South America, that's that is what Fred.
He would like. That's a Fred Hoyberg big if you go to South America.
But if you want a big 10 big to bang with Kofi Koberd and whoever goes to Purdue, you got to go Eastern Europe.
Okay. All right. I was texted this question, so I'll read it to you.
Who has more catches next year? Vocalek or Fidone?
Like through the way this is going to play. Remember, the Y receiver room is going to be different.
If Fadoni is everything that everybody has said he is.
Well, he was the top rated tight end, right?
He was number one.
He was better than Brock Bowers coming out of high school.
Was he?
That's what they said.
That's what they said.
Was he?
Brock Bowers was fifth.
Do you, okay, so part B to that question,
will Fadoni be better than Bowers?
I'm not going to answer that one.
No.
I'm going to answer the first one.
You got to answer.
I think Fadone has more catches.
I think Vokelick is still.
Vokeluck's going to get his.
Will he lead the team in catches?
Fadoni?
Yeah.
No.
Somebody in the receiver room.
Who will lead the team in the receiving?
Who's playing in the slot?
Don't know.
Betts?
You put them bets on the slot?
Move them around.
You can run a jet sweep off of it.
We like him in the jet sweep.
Give me Alante or Trey Sermon.
Hmm.
If you put Alante Brown in the slot with Omar Manning,
Xavier Betz
Thomas Fadoni
Give me Alante Brown to get open
75% of the time
I'm not saying he gets the ball
But give me Alante Brown
Does he make the starting line up then?
He should
Does he?
Probably not
He's been in the dog house for what
Two, three years
Is he in the doghouse?
Is that where he is?
He's on kickoff team
They won't even let him return it
Well that's because
Well he shouldn't return it
Because they're in the blocking
But still
I don't think that's a lot of them
I don't think that's an Alante Brown issue.
But if you put Alante Brown in the slot with those guys on the outside,
give me him to be open more often than not.
So you really think that as this thing lines up,
so Alante Brown in the slot, who else is out there with him?
If I had it my way?
Yeah.
Because it's not going to be this way.
Well, no, they're not, then you're not Coach Rico yet.
Omar, Xavier, and either.
Fadoni or Vocalek?
Hmm.
I would
I don't know who I prefer
because I haven't seen Fadoni.
I've seen his high school tape
and he's extremely athletic
pretty fast,
great hands.
I haven't seen it.
I don't know.
Will he be?
He's coming off an ACL tear.
I don't know.
I've seen Vocalek though.
Yeah.
I like Vocalek.
Well, he blocks great
and he has good hands.
Dusty just asked the question.
Does anyone ever come back
to the same ability
after a major surgery like that?
like Fadoni had.
And the same thing can be said for Gabe Irvin.
Like, people have, lately, if you go further back in sports history, no.
Like, even like early 2000s, early 2010s.
But after that, surgery and medical advancements have advanced far enough where people have bounced back.
The only issue would be if they trained their body enough.
so their other knee isn't weaker in the process after the surgery.
Because after the surgery, you go through the physical therapy
and you have to strengthen that back up.
Hopefully, you kept your other knee in good shape
because it's going to compensate for the shift in weight and strength.
So think about it this way, that Gabe Irvin and Fadone would be projected.
So Fadone is if they're using two tight ends.
They're both true freshman because they both redshirted.
Right.
So you're going to rely on those two players off injuries,
which is why I don't want to put pressure on them.
Yeah, we're not sure about, like, we don't know what we're getting.
That's a between the ears thing.
So the most reliable, dependable would be Ramier.
Yes.
And if it's Ramier, then isn't Ramier in leading the team in the past,
in past receptions conversation?
No.
You don't think so
You don't think with those receivers
Top five not leading
He is going
He there's going to be
Two games
He leads the team and catches
For the season he does not lead the team and catches
Who has more catches
Xavier Bats or Oliver Martin
If the way that they have played
And coached continues
On to this season Oliver Martin
If Zipers
Xavier Betz gets it right, whatever is going on at practice behind the scenes with the coaches with himself, et cetera.
He should be on the field more often than not, leading to him getting more receptions.
Who has more catches?
Omar Manning or Xavier Betz?
If everything goes according to plan for Omar Manning and everything gets right for him between his ears,
but with the coaches with himself, Omar Manning.
So is he...
Omar Manning should be your number one,
should be your leading receiver.
He is a physical freak with great hands.
He runs great routes.
He just needs to find a way to stay on the field.
This is a part of what I find curious about this team this year.
Because Whipple's coming, and we don't know.
All the metrics that we've been working from are gone.
We don't know how long players are going to be on the field.
right we don't know how many reps they're going to get
Whipple and Mickey Joseph can come in
and totally flip this thing
Mickey
it was a Stanley Morgan clip
in the NFL he was making a tackle on punt team
Mickey quote tweeted that said all receivers will be playing
special teams mark my words
how
how quickly do you think that narrative changes
can you see Omar Manning on special
teams.
Yes.
Doing what?
Gunner on a punt.
Oh, good heavens.
6, 4.5, 220
running down on?
Alabama does it.
You really, do you really, in your heart of heart,
feel like you could see Omar Manning as a gunner on the punt team?
I'm not having him block anybody.
Can you tackle?
I don't know.
I would think so.
I would think he's tackled somebody before.
I would think he's played special teams
Xavier Betts?
You see him on special teams?
He played special teams in high school, yes.
Wherever they put him, yeah, he can do that.
Because there's, when you spread out the names,
it looks as though the room is good,
but do you trust the wide receiver room?
Do you individually trust this wide receiver room?
I want to.
I don't ask you if you want to.
I ask you if you do.
I ask you if you do.
Okay, okay, here we go. I trust the room. Do I trust, I trust the coach now in charge of the room, but do I, did I trust it before? Not really.
Does Mickey Joseph need a long runway?
Mickey Joseph needs complete control over the receiver room. He needs people to let him do his thing, and he needs to be allowed to insert players into special teams, what have you,
not at his will.
You still have to go through the other coaches,
the special teams coach and whatever,
but he needs to have complete control over what his receivers do.
You can't have anybody in his way.
But Whipple's the coordinator.
He's the passing,
or he's, is the passing game.
No, Mickey Joseph is the passing game.
Quarterbacks coach and the offensive coordinator.
The quarterback's coach and the offense coordinator is Whipp.
They're going to work together, but like I said,
Mickey needs complete control of those receivers.
Well, you can't work together and have complete control.
You can work together.
You cannot have, you cannot have complete control,
and work together.
Yeah, you have control over what your receivers do
until they get into that the offensive coordinator
is calling the plays.
They're doing what he says,
but Mickey Joseph has control over those receivers.
The great issue with coordinators and offensive coordinators
and passing coordinators is personnel.
It's personnel on the field.
So whatever Whipple wants to call,
somebody has to make sure that that exact personnel is
on the field.
What Alante Brown runs may not be the same
as Xavier Betts. So if
one's in the game at a
spot and the other one is not,
you can't, your play
call has to affect that, has to reflect that.
Yes. That's going to be an issue.
And remember all of that having Mickey Joseph,
Whipple, and Scott
Frost
in that space.
Scott's got to
let go. What's the likelihood?
What's the likelihood that Scott Frost says, you know what?
I'm just here as an overseer.
Let Mickey and Whipple do what they want to do.
Let Sibble do it.
That's already been established.
That's already been established.
Yance is the starter and you're running dives all day.
Yeah.
Not high.
He said he wanted to.
from what we have heard he is attempting,
but I don't see it actually happening.
From the text line.
Mickey X is the,
Mickey is the X factor, a new set of eyes coming in
with no preconceived notions of past performances.
Right.
That entire room will be shaken up
and then cast out to kind of list themselves in order.
They've all got a clean slate.
I can't imagine that they have a fully clean slate.
It's not possible.
Scott Frost still there.
That's what I mean by making control.
Beckton's still there.
That's why I'm email when I say Mickey needs control.
Well,
he needs a clean slate with these guys.
These guys need to,
these receivers need to not be tied down by whatever happened before Mickey got there.
Unless it was something major.
Well, we don't know.
what major is.
Exactly.
So we'll,
but I'm saying
Mickey needs to be able
to talk to these guys
as if it's brand new
and treat these guys like,
all right,
somebody's got to win this job.
I want to see how it plays out.
I want to see how this plays out.
The spring's going to be very interesting
with where to break.
I will get to the other tech.
You guys have been great.
Thank you for putting them in
and we'll get to them.
But yeah,
Frost,
Whipple,
Joseph.
We've got to figure out
how this thing
is going to work.
