Starting point is 00:00:00 You're listening to one-on-one with DP. Brought to you by Beatrice Bakery on 937 The Ticket and the Ticketfm.com. Welcome back. Good to check in with folks from Lincoln Northeast Wrestling. Hear their story. If you're looking for something to do, they haven't met Wednesday, 5 o'clock. All that information is available on their website and other. It is a tribute day for the late great Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King.
Starting point is 00:00:40 simple stuff. If we can just use this as a reminder. There's lots to lots to consider today. Again, there's the youth rally today. It's all virtual. So it's online. Some positive young folks.
Starting point is 00:00:59 They work all year round on their presentation. And their storytelling, it is pretty epic. I got to preview some of it with Peter Ferguson. And if you get a chance today, jump up. from Dr. Martin King, Jr. Hate is just as injurious to the hater as it is to the hated. Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrods the personality and eats away. It's vital unity.
Starting point is 00:01:29 Many of our inner conflicts are rooted in hate. This is why psychiatrists say love or perish. Hate is too great a burden to bear. There's lots of things to digest and carry with you, hopefully something lands on you today that helps you get through a space where we have decided far too often to be negative in how we address and approach each other. Simplicity. He goes on to say, it is in some not too distant tomorrow, the radiant stars of love and brotherhood
Starting point is 00:02:04 will shine over our great nation with all their scintillating beauty. I think there's depth in that. That's love, you see. It's redemptive. And this is why Jesus says love. There's something about love that builds up and is creative. There is something about hate that tears down and destructive. So love your enemies.
Starting point is 00:02:29 I'll go a step further. Don't have any enemies. That's the mission. In this space, as we talk about sports, a lot of the discussion and the narrative is based on how you feel about things in its own vacuum. Sports is intended to be a space in a place where it is inclusive and everybody's invited and welcome to it.
Starting point is 00:02:57 We've made sports talk in some cases far too venomous. It's far too angry and far too bitter. When we talk about Nebraska athletics, in some context, we talk about them as fans and others as media or as people with microphones, right, just to amplify those things. When you talk about Nebraska athletics, whether it's women's hoops, men's hoops, football, baseball, volleyball, whatever, a thing that is often forgotten and is put aside because people feel a thing about a certain aspect of it is this. These are the sons and daughters of the University of Nebraska.
Starting point is 00:03:40 And if you are a part of this community and you carry and wear the Husker in and you you carry Go Big Red as a part of your spirit and you yell it out loudly, what should come from that is an inclusion of the people who play the sports as well. Speak about the Huskers as you would speak about your own children because they are. they sacrifice they battle for the greater cause of everybody the community is better when the teams do well when our young people are doing well when our young people have success when our young people have figured out how to grow and how to connect that's what sports is about husker football husker basketball husker baseball etc that is an accumulation of our connection
Starting point is 00:04:38 to each. And you cannot claim love for Nebraska and the logo, but not for the people who play the games. You have to be inclusive in that. You cannot say that you love Husker football, but you don't love the people who play Husker football. You can't claim to say that you want what's best for Lincoln, Nebraska, without wanting what's best for Nebraska athletics. We know the value of Nebraska athletics. We know the purpose and how much power Nebraska football has. When you yell in Nebraska, when you get a husker power, it should be the collective. That's where the strength is and the numbers and the work that give you the numbers. It's the people who play those games for us that we should celebrate more often. Never choose the game over the
Starting point is 00:05:39 young people. If you are choosing the result of the games over the young people themselves, you are failing at what being a Husker fan should be. Celebrate, honor, give respect to, and then good things happen. But you cannot create a vacuum where it's just venomous all the time. You can't do it. It is getting together on the same. It is getting together on the same. same page when it comes to Nebraska athletics that will help Nebraska athletics be better. Remember, people have voice now with social media and such. People have loud voices. And if you are part of the loud echo chamber that constantly,
Starting point is 00:06:26 constantly badgers the young people who play games for the University of Nebraska, you're not helping because that's seen and heard. You want people to come and play for Nebraska? Guess what? They see you. They hear you all the time, not just when you're being positive. My wish for Husker Nation is that it finds a collective space where it can root for its young people together, even if it makes you feel uncomfortable in doing so.
Starting point is 00:07:03 More importantly, especially if it makes you uncomfortable in doing so. Now, if you want ownership of Nebraska athletics, that's a different deal. But when it comes to the young people who wear the color, the scarlet and cream of Nebraska, you've got to be considerate of them as you go forward. Be aware, be functional. They need you. You ask for them, they need you.
Starting point is 00:07:36 Together, Husker Nation can be the best version of itself. That's all we want today. From the text line, Willie says, what's up, what's up, Willie? Great stuff today. My daughter's hanging out with me while I'm working, and we're both learning today. Appreciate you and what you're doing. own for our community, still want to complain about the Horeo officiating for the ladies.
Starting point is 00:07:55 Absolutely right. But that's a collective in that we saw what the lady Huskers were doing. Like we knew, you're down three starters in a tough environment against two of the top 30 players in the entire country. Zingano and Clark are two of the 30 best. And our young lady Huskers stepped up. Like as a collective community, we should have all stood up in our living room yesterday and went, wow, look at these young ladies step up and grow up.
Starting point is 00:08:35 For our very eyes, we saw some young ladies that were playing Lincoln High School basketball a year ago, step up on a big stage and under bright lights and show out. I was proud of them yesterday. I'm always proud of them because they battled like crazy. But my goodness gracious, to watch Alexis Markowski just her back got straight and her face got proud, it was, look at this, look at what's happening. And her teammates all just rallied with her.
Starting point is 00:09:15 Like it was, oh, my goodness gracious. to see young Allison Weiner go face to face, nose to nose with Caitlin Clark. Wow. Look, Moriarty came off the bench and gave quality minutes, contributed at a high level. Kendall Coley was all energy. She was a Tasmanian devil running around on the court yesterday. And I want to shout out, like Ashley Skagit on a day when three of the three leaders of this team, weren't there, she was vocal.
Starting point is 00:09:53 She was in place. She made a point to rebound at a higher level. She was more aware of her ability to distribute. And then the verb, it's her verbal leadership yesterday. When they got together in their huddles and have Ashley lead them, they'd said in the broadcast that Ashley knew that she would have to carry more burden. She called herself the grandma yesterday.
Starting point is 00:10:14 She was the old lady of the program, which just tells me, she knew what her teammates needed and she did those things. games. Rico, I would say this. This team's 13 and 4. On a scale of 1 to 10, where do you put their chances of them being a tournament team? 100%. Okay. So I guess a 10. Okay. If I said to you, they've got the next three games with all sub 500 teams. 3.0. So it's 16 and 4. They're in. Like that's the thing. Now, the recent history of this program has that they will hiccup in one of those games. Yeah, but this team is different. This team is different.
Starting point is 00:10:57 This team is different. This team is, I'll ask you why. What is it in your mind that makes this team different? This team is a team. The way that they play together for each other with each other is just different than any of the previous teams we've seen, any of the basketball teams we've seen in recent history, just because you can tell,
Starting point is 00:11:19 And it's not just on the off. It's mostly on the defensive end. You can tell how much they trust each other where they're, you know, they're making the callouts. Sometimes people aren't even calling things out. They're just switching. They're just, they're picking up on people if somebody's left open. Everybody's in the right position. The rebound's getting got.
Starting point is 00:11:36 Like everybody seems to be in the right spot at the right time at the right moment on this Nebraska women's team. They are more coachable than the men's team. There's no questions. They are more task and assign. oriented than the men's basketball. Everybody has a role. Everybody knows how to fill that role.
Starting point is 00:11:55 Oh, and by the way, they can do other things as well. Like, everybody has something that they are really good at doing and they do it at a really high level and they do everything else really well as well. They made a point, again, for Ashley to say, okay, I'm not, I'm not, I can't just worry about the things that I normally do. There's some other things required to, to, watch Markowski in the paint against a premier big 10 big, a premier national big, was incredible, right? Just incredible.
Starting point is 00:12:28 Said, listen, look, we can battle down here in his paint, but I'm going to take out of deep water and see how you swim. It's good. Now, again, this one, you know, Saskatchew had 31 points. A lot of those free throw a lot. But to watch the young ladies step up in space. look, Ruby Porter had had had her time away. Ruby Porter's a baller.
Starting point is 00:12:52 She's a baller. If anything, I wanted her to take more shots yesterday. Like, that was what I wanted from Ruby. Please shoot, Lord. Right? And to see Brown and Stewart come off the bench, Stewart is too good offensively to only take one shot. She's too good.
Starting point is 00:13:10 She's too good of a shooter. But she made concessions because she had to go in and battle. battles in Zengowski down in the paint. So I like what they learned about themselves. That first 30, like the first quarter of basketball is the best quarter of basketball that we've seen in Nebraska, period, in a long time. Like, they were up 30 to 14. This thing looked, it made the Big Ten announcers try to find words to describe what
Starting point is 00:13:40 they're watching. And I didn't like it. Like, I didn't like, look, I've, I've, I've, have no. Christy Winters for 20, 25 years. Like I knew her when she was in high school. So Chrissy Winters was the grant hill, the female grant hill of D.C. basketball. Okay.
Starting point is 00:13:55 They went to the same high school, right? Ran the same type of number. She's a coach. One state titles as a high school basketball coach. Yeah. Right? Played at University of Maryland, played the WMBA.
Starting point is 00:14:08 For her to justify what was going on, I was a little disappointed. I was a little disappointed because I was like, wait a minute. I've seen you coach. When you're not getting calls, Christie Winters will set the room on fire. And it was crickets yesterday.
Starting point is 00:14:26 It was crickets about it. Like you can't do that. So you never make the result of a game about the officials. I will say this. I had zero negative things to say about Nebraska's roster yesterday. The way they played from tip to horn was as good of basketball. as we've seen in a lot. I mean, you're missing your two primary ball handlers,
Starting point is 00:14:50 and you still took it to Iowa. And your starting center. Yeah, and one of your starting center. And you still took it to Iowa and somehow allowed 30 plus free throws and only got eight yourself. Big Sky is on the text line. It says, get her on the show. Christy Winters may be the busiest human being I know as a coach and as a broadcaster. as a trainer she's busy.
Starting point is 00:15:17 But you're right. That's a conversation needs to be had. From the text line, What's Up DP? Can we say that the growth of this women's basketball team started last year with the coaching job Amy did last year? Yes, because Amy got them through a really difficult stretch. And that was a tough year.
Starting point is 00:15:34 They played well against better teams and sometimes they would slip up. And those losses against lesser Big Ten teams kept them from the NCAA tournament. They played to the level of their opponents last season. And sometimes below. Yeah. And that was really difficult to watch. But I would, I had to debate on this show. There were people in this show that said,
Starting point is 00:15:54 Amy should have been fired a year ago. And I was like, what? Oh, it's time. I'm like, no, no, no, no. Amy Williams can coach, give, let her and Chuck Love, let them do what they do. They've recruited at a high level. They've changed the, the, the location of the program. Right now they're currently sitting in the middle of the Big Ten.
Starting point is 00:16:14 I think they can get up into the top third. I think they can do that. They'll have every opportunity to do so, but we'll find out and watch. They've got a nice run of games where if they play at the level that they're playing at so far, they will have a nice little streak of wins and can get themselves firmly entrenched in the NCAA tournament discussion. But that's plenty to talk about.
Starting point is 00:16:36 We'll talk about Indiana. Indiana's here. It's 5 o'clock tip at PBA. I know a lot of folks said they're disinterested or they don't want to go. I'm not one of those people. I will be there and I want to see what's going on. I get to checking on Nebraska's old friend Kenya Hunter, who is on the bench at Indiana.
Starting point is 00:16:52 I'll yell at him a little bit this afternoon to see how he's doing. But I'm looking forward to today's matchup. We'll talk about that next on 0-937 the ticket. Watch live on Facebook, YouTube, or Twitch. You're listening to one-on-one with DP on 93-7 the Ticket and the Ticketfm.com.
