You're listening to One-on-One with DP.
Brought to you by Beatrice Bakery.
On 93-7 The Ticket and The Ticket FM.com.
Welcome back to 101.
This is kind of how she came into the building.
If you can imagine Ultimate Warrior just running to the ring, shaking the ropes and announcing herself.
This is how she showed up to the building today.
Let's bring her back, Priscilla Joseph.
One of the first wives of the football program.
Thank you for doing this again.
Greatly appreciate it.
Again, you folks on the Sartar-Hammy text line.
Thank you.
Craig wanted to say, you know, welcome to Lincoln.
Thank you.
Folks are out here sending that it.
This is a great part of this, the engagement,
because you get to know people
and you get to know this fan base.
And this is a passionate, fanatic base.
This is what that is.
You just came from from LSU.
I think fanatic.
is a fair word for how they how they approach their football yeah describe the typical
the typical not the extreme but the typical lsu football fan everybody knows football
everybody knows lsu football if you're associated with um lsu football lsu you like climbed about
five ranks.
So it's very different, very different from Nebraska.
And that's only considering I've been here for about two weeks.
I've had about a month interaction with Nebraska fans and haven't had a season with Nebraska fans.
And it's funny because people are, you know, Mickey and his teammates like, oh, warn me like,
hey, you know, you're enjoying the fun now, right? But I always stop people in their tracks and
listen, this isn't my first rodeo and it won't be my last. I've been in this. This is,
we just finish our 13th season. So did I take a chance and go ahead and interact with Nebraska fans?
Yes, I did. I did not, I couldn't do the same with LSU because
they love LSU, but they become very ugly.
And that's not, and listen, we were, we were.
You see the look at his, you saw the look at Rico's face, right?
And listen, like, I love LSU.
Like, my daughter probably still bleeds purple and gold.
And I hate to say that.
So Nebraska, y'all better change that if y'all want us to stay.
Because she's still, and the reason why she bleeds purple and gold is because Coach O
created such a family environment.
for our family and he treated our daughter Melania like his first grandchild.
So she is embedded in LSU and she loves nothing other than tigers and purple and gold and
all of the fun.
Has she met her beat yet?
She has not.
Look, man, I got to be honest here.
I'm just going to come out, full honesty.
Herbie's not beating Mike the Tiger.
I just...
Nobody, like, it's Aga and Mike the Tiger.
Like, you don't.
It's literally it.
Like purple and gold and a tie.
Like, that's great.
I can't say anything about that.
That's amazing.
Yeah.
Great colors.
Great mascot.
Have they provided you with the appropriate Husker wardrobe?
Not exactly.
I mean, I went a little crazy at the store, at the shop.
Did you go to the big red shop?
I did, yes.
So I got the kids all set up.
I got me a nice little sweater and all that stuff.
I was trying to actually wear it today, but it's in a box somewhere.
Everything is in a box.
It's in a box.
It'll come out eventually.
And when it does, I can't wait to wear it.
Yeah, so I'll have to explain this to you.
You're going to need like a closet full.
A whole closet.
You're going to need, Mickey, I apologize in advance.
I'm just letting you know for all the events that you're going to go to
and all the different type of events and all the different weather and all the different things.
This is going to require some effort and work.
I'm willing to go shopping.
Oh, darn.
Just to see, because...
Mickey, did you hear that?
They gave me permission.
Yeah.
I apologize to the past, Mickey.
I really did.
From Husker fans to the Joseph family, you just need to shop for more clothes.
I'm sorry about it.
There you go.
Yeah, and the clothes are everywhere.
You will not have to look for...
Like, where to shop everywhere.
Everywhere has this thing.
Okay.
So you made the decision to engage Husker Nation on social media.
And what you found...
Tell me what you found to be true about Husker fans.
die hard very welcoming and easy going very easy going very easy to engage with now listen i mean i don't know
what they think about me but i'm just here to have a great time now i know we're going to have
maybe like look we're perfect seasons are very hard to come by come by right we had one in 2019
which was an experience in itself.
So I know we're going to have losses
and then we're going to have some angry fans
and all that stuff.
But that comes with the gig.
I mean, my daughter knows what to expect when we lose.
She knows daddy's moods.
And it's not even a mood.
It's just like what he's feeling.
Like, did we lose, Mommy?
Yes, baby, we did.
And her mood changes, right?
So it's just, it's in our family to know what to expect.
Now, when we win, she's like, yeah, let's have a party.
You know, let's have a great time.
Absolutely, baby.
Let's have a great time.
And you want them to enjoy those wins.
But when you lose, it's okay for them to enjoy the losses, right?
So that they know what it's like to lose.
Because you have to know what it's like to lose.
You can't always expect to win.
Well, that is the thing that has taken Nebraska several decades.
Or they know how to lose.
No, they had to learn how to process the loss.
Process the loss, yes.
Process the loss was a different thing.
They still don't know how to process the loss.
Oh, Rico, Rico.
Am I wrong?
Those things hard.
It is.
Those things very hard.
As a coach, how did you handle night after a loss?
Probably worse than Mickey Joseph.
Give me the truth.
Listen, and the reason, you can ask my girls,
Mickey would come and talk to my girls after a loss.
What I said, they couldn't remember what I said.
My speech after a loss, they were like, yeah, good job, Coach.
Mickey Joseph, and at the time they called them MJ, they're like,
MJ comes in and he's like, you know, like, man, Coach MJ really just shifted our mind.
I'm like, all right, but cool.
Y'all why him?
I see how it is.
Yeah, like, but they, I mean, they knew my fascination with me.
You know what I mean?
Like, I admire his coach.
Like, and the thing with Mickey is that there is no settling.
As good as everybody talks about how great he was in 2019 with Jamar Chase, Justin Jefferson, Terrence Marshall.
He's even better now because he's not willing to be like, wow, that was my best season.
No, no, no, no.
You think that was my best season?
Grab some popcorn.
I got something to show you.
What makes him unique in this space?
You've been around a lot of coaches.
He strives to be the best.
And because this is his alma mater,
he watched the games before our LSU games,
and it wasn't fun for him.
It would change his attitude, his energy,
and he would take it out and put it into that LSU energy
and then, you know, like they would win and all that stuff
and that would help.
But he doesn't like, you don't ever like seeing your home
in not a good place.
And this has always been home for him, always.
So when the opportunity pops up,
like this has to be like a glowing moment to say,
yeah, we get to go home.
Yes.
So the thing is that we kind of got, hate to get all biblical on, you know, religious on this,
but it's, it was a feeling that he had that I knew the second he mentioned like, hey,
Nemaskamite.
And this was at the beginning of last season.
I mean, August.
He's like, I think we might go back home.
And I was like, I mean, we're in the state of Louisiana.
I don't know how much more home you can get.
So what do you talk about?
And he's like, no, he's like, I have a feeling that we might go end up at Nebraska at the end in the season.
And I'm like, it's August.
Like, season still hasn't started yet.
And he, and you just, it's like he knew.
Like I need to go home and we need to fix, help.
Help.
No, no, no, no.
But see, you see, you see, you were right the first time.
No.
You were right the first time.
You didn't have to fix what you said.
Help fix.
Well, because that kind of accountability is necessary and that kind of energy is necessary.
I find it amazing that, again, this was last August.
Yeah.
That this thing is in motion and as it plays out.
And that's considering he didn't talk to, not one person from Nebraska.
Like, had no contact, had nobody reached out to him.
said, hey, this might happen at the end of the season.
You know, because you have that sometimes where they reach out at the beginning of
season like, hey, you know, we, we'd like to talk to you at the end of the season, considering
what might happen during the season.
You get those phone calls, but that didn't happen here.
And that's why I was like, you know, like, you're kind of skeptical.
You're like, yeah, okay.
Like, yeah, tell me in like November or October.
Let me know when they call.
Yeah.
Let me know when they call.
Exactly.
And then when they did, I was like, oh.
It's time.
Yeah, it's time.
It's time.
So you went through the process.
You make the decision that this is the place, this is the place for you.
Then you get into the housing market.
What were you looking for?
Like what was on your mind?
Like, where did you want to be?
Where did you think you wanted to be?
I didn't really know.
We kind of just, I leaned on Steve and Stephanie Taylor, and they really just guided us.
that tells me so much
wait but listen
don't listen to Steve
that tells me so much
that tells me so much
what does that mean
what does that tell you tell me
tell me tell me I just saw them
the other night so whenever we run it to each other
we do a football post game show
and we do it from
we do it from a bar tanners
and Steve would just be there
like just hanging out
and I never like I don't approach people that
way.
You here hanging out.
I'm not going to really bother you.
But Steve came up and just started talking.
And I just went, that's Steve.
Steve is one of my dudes.
Like, this is one of my dudes.
I want to deal with him.
And then I met his wife and I went,
ha, ha, ha.
Okay.
All right.
I understand.
Yes.
Whatever you want.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like, I understood this is what we were dealing with.
Yes.
Okay, so, okay.
Like, now I'm picturing several dinners.
The lights are clicking on.
Wow.
Got it.
Yeah.
It took one lunch, one visit to Lincoln, and it was like, sold.
Right.
Like, that's what that is.
Oh, my goodness gracious.
They got some, they put some, like, spray on and just, like,
you've got to listen to them.
That was just what it was.
Like, we just saw him at the basketball game the other night.
And, you know, he just gives me, they give him.
They give me the look.
Like they kept me, I was talking to somebody else.
And they gave me the look.
And I just went, okay, got to put everything down.
These are my people.
This is crazy.
So now where is everything here in Lincoln?
Everything is here.
Okay.
And then just a guest.
Except her one chair.
But that's it.
It's okay.
I feel like this is a, I probably like this chair is important.
No, not really.
But it's, you know, it's a chair.
What? What? So how long is it going to take you before the boxes are empty based on your previous moves?
Until we move to our next house. If y'all want the truth, that is the absolute truth.
So aside from your kids, how much of the LSU stuff wardrobe will you guys keep? What percentage?
So we brought, I brought one sweater from the national championship. My daughter got, um,
a t-shirt from the national championship and my son and daughter got backpacks from national
championship Mickey got a backpack from the national championship that is about it when everything else
worth five years was given to my neighbor's son or anybody that wanted to stop by and go through his closet
see see we don't ever ever ever bring stuff with us yeah I'm not good at that
You're not good at him.
He's terrible at it.
I've got my coaching gear from three sports and 26 years.
I've got something from all of it.
It is a one item.
Or like the whole wardrobe while you were there.
Not the whole, but too much of the old.
He's got enough where his wife is trying to give his stuff away.
Yeah, we have those moments where it's like just take a...
See, I'm lucky that Mickey's not home.
So when I get rid of his stuff.
but he were not very attached to things she would they're just boxes and she's okay this box
like it's time to give a pants this box like we have an lSU box i mean oh i have like a football
box where like i have a shirt and shorts or you know like or if he likes wearing something i'll let
him keep it you know like it's always a shorts that he grab you know like when he's home like i'll let
him keep it but or like the bowl you know like the bowl game stuff i kind of just put in boxes
for the swag yeah like memorabilia kind of stuff what so for all of these bowl games
there's there's a swag bag that that's attached to each of them that they the coaches get as soon
as they walk in the door what is that distribution like like who gets does he does he go through it
first does he bring it home and allow you guys to go through it first what's whoever gets into the
room first. That's kind of what I was. I mean, we always get greeted with like a gift basket and stuff
like that. Sometimes he gets into the room first and he kind of goes through all the chocolate and
sweets, which I'm not a big fan of. So he gets all that. But we get like cups with like the logos.
I like to keep that stuff until it either fades away or we don't either. I just don't use it just because
I really like it. And then I put it away. One day we'll have like an entire room full of,
full of it but i'll probably never ever set it out until we find our dream house in arizona
whenever that is after after a very long time after two or three national championships here
there you go that's what i'm talking about you decided to retire outside of the national
championship swag bag what what was probably your favorite um i don't really have a favorite i mean they don't
really like give the wives a lot of treats right they kind of give us cash to go shopping with
what's your favorite shopping trip the national championship is that's what a minute wait a minute
so the wives get cash to shop at these well not cash but cards on you know gift cards I
I am mad at it
I ain't either
don't give me stuff
I want to go spend some money
and then if they give him one
I say here thanks
I take that too
You got no time to go spend it
You're busy
Let me take this off your hands
I'll go shopping for you
And he'll ask me
What did you buy me?
Nothing
Nothing
Nothing
Nothing okay
You got two bags full of stuff
Stop focusing on me
Focus on the game
What are you doing?
You don't need to go shopping for you
is at home right now throwing stuff at the computer.
Like he's literal, what is going on?
No, he's not.
He is out recruiting right now.
He's not listening.
Again, he's busy.
He's busy.
I got you.
We will throw it to break.
We will close out one of one with the coach's wife.
