Starting point is 00:00:00 It's time to go one-on-one with D.P. Coming at you live from the couple Chevrolet GMC Studios, here is your host, Derek Pearson, presented by Beatrice Bakery, on 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticketfm.com. Welcome to 101 on the Monday after NFL playoffs. We've got conference championships coming up. Now we know. I do want to shout out Husker Wrestling.
Starting point is 00:00:36 I had a great weekend. Two wins back to back. They beat Wisconsin and Northwestern. Good to watch. Talk to Mark Manning. He's all set up. He's had a good week. Jake Sorensen sprinted out of here as though his heels were on fire because we were going to pursue him.
Starting point is 00:00:55 I'm sure he had a meeting. I'm positive. Jake always has a meeting. He's always very busy. But so we had, during the crossover Friday, we talked about movies and why Sipple was cooler than Jake. And I said, basically, it's probably because of, he's seen more movies that Jake has not. And that would be a part of it. And I said, well, a sure way to learn culture is through entertainment.
Starting point is 00:01:24 And so we came up with, I had to come up with a list of movies that Jake should see if he wants cool points. Okay. He wants cool points. And I was going to pick 10 and see how many Jake knew. That he's already seen. That he's already seen. And Rico set the over under at three, but then said it would be under three. Hard under.
Starting point is 00:01:46 Like a hard under three. So then evil DP said, okay, let's do this with Mark. I was sitting in my office pleasantly enjoying my technology summit webinar or whatever I do on a Monday and here I am. You had coffee and you were
Starting point is 00:02:10 settled so this was a good place for it. So from your own thinking if I listed if I named 10 movies of this 10 how many do you think you will know the answer
Starting point is 00:02:26 that you will be able to say yes I've seen it. your conversation on Friday. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. So I've got a little preview of this. Uh-huh. I would set the over under at like one and a half. At one and a half.
Starting point is 00:02:39 And I might take the under. Rico, where do you, where do you, on the, on the wager board for Mark on Wiler? If the over under. Look, Mark doesn't watch movies.
Starting point is 00:02:51 He falls asleep during movies. He might have seen the start. I've started like seven of these. He might have seen the start of like half of these. Okay. But he hasn't finished any of them. Okay. I'd put it at two and I would also, two and a half, I'd take the other. Okay. Rico, we ever. We ever request on the, we ever request on the text.
Starting point is 00:03:11 Seven of them. We just keep ad opt-up. Well, here's the thing. Okay. You see the text. Somebody needs their name changed on there. So here's the thing. So here's the thing. Mark, Mark, you are black girl dad. Yeah, right. So there's some things in this thing that you're going to have to. I know. I know. I'm going to start with a layup. This is a layup. This will tell me everything. This takes, this will tell me everything I need to know. Which is when you start? Because you have a black daughter. And this is, I just in my head. I feel like you're setting them up for failure. Okay. The movie is Dreamgirls. Nope. No, and that should be in my lane too for many reasons. That should be.
Starting point is 00:04:00 should be in my lane that that's haven't seen it haven't seen it's okay i'm i'm going to write these thank you yeah please i need for you okay that was not the start i was expecting setting him up you're setting him up oh dream girl it's singing it's all music it's right down his lane you were one of the great musical performances ever what year did that come out this This was a long time ago. I know, I know. I'm trying to think if I was in high school. It might have been when I was in high school.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Fantastic. It was fantastic. It was shortly after she was on Idol. Yeah. Jennifer. Yeah. Jennifer Hudson. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:44 I mean, amazing. Okay. So I now have to swing because now that I have to pivot into some, because there's some. What's easier than a layup. What's easier than that? Okay. Barbershop
Starting point is 00:04:57 No Oh good I think you'd like barbershop I think I would too That might be a movie You don't fall asleep during Wow I am
Starting point is 00:05:08 I am gonna have to change my list for you I told you He doesn't watch movies Okay Higher learning He's no way he's seen that No There's no way
Starting point is 00:05:22 No Okay How high There's no way You've seen that either. How high. No. You haven't seen how high.
Starting point is 00:05:29 No. You might like that one, too. That's funny. I'm going to keep this recent so that we have a shot. I think recency actually might make it worse. Okay. Here's the one I think, okay. The color purple.
Starting point is 00:05:45 Nope. That seems like a Mark movie. Wow, that is so a Mark movie. Maybe. Have you seen the help? that was literally the next thing was it yes i have seen the help okay the help gets in okay okay that gets you in the door at least i was worried about i was worried about you i was worried about you i say you know great scene with pie i guess baking as mark
Starting point is 00:06:11 are you telling me i should never eat a chocolate cake for mark that one heard no i would never I should never. I would never. He would never do that. I should never. But I could see him seeing that and just going, why would you? Can I say that that sissy SpaceX reaction to it is still my favorite thing from the movie? That's my favorite.
Starting point is 00:06:37 Like I don't know why out of that movie, but that's my favorite scene. This is her pie. What? Her reaction once she realized, he goes, you ate the pie? Oh my goodness gracious. Mark. Yeah. House party.
Starting point is 00:06:56 No. That's not a Mark movie. That is such a mark. That is hilarious. Rico, have you seen all these? All but Dreamgirls. Oh, wow. Girl dad.
Starting point is 00:07:15 Get after him too. Come on. She doesn't know what she's watching. For the future. Yeah, I know. For the future. For the future. My girl wants to watch Enkanto and she only wants to watch the two singing scenes.
Starting point is 00:07:28 But you have to know this for her. I know. I know this. You know Dreamgirls. Yes. What's the story? I don't know the story. I haven't seen it.
Starting point is 00:07:36 Girls, they fall asleep. They have a dream. They're singing involved. Isn't it like a group of singers? I feel like that's what it is. It usually is. Just imagine a movie about some of the stories. stories about Motown and how that that happens literally Eddie Murphy's greatest performance ever
Starting point is 00:07:57 okay amazing uh and Jamie Fox is oh Jamie Fox is in it Jamie Fox does he sing Beyonce yes he does oh I'm watching that yeah so it's Jamie Fox Eddie Murphy sings does that count you've seen Ray I saw Ray that's from the text line text line asks if you're seen Ray I saw Ray um Beyonce Jennifer Hudson uh Eddie Murphy Jamie Foxe that's That gives you any, like, just realm for where this is. Boomerang! Have you seen Boomerang? I think that's the first one I haven't heard of.
Starting point is 00:08:27 Wow. With Eddie Murphy and Hallie Berry. Hmm. Nope. Plays marketing. Some of the great most. I like marketing. Most of the great, right.
Starting point is 00:08:37 Some of the great quotables are from this movie. Okay. Okay. So we're one for seven. Seven. I need one more. We said it too. Do the right thing.
Starting point is 00:08:50 No. Sister act. That's not. Cister act one, sister act two all over. I just saw the text I wanted to see if he's not. It's not. That is not. As a Catholic boy.
Starting point is 00:09:04 Yeah, I saw a sister act. Oh, this one I feel like there's no chance you're going to know this one. Life. Oh, no. No, no, but I am interested in that one. Life. Eddie Murphy, Richard. Great cast in that one.
Starting point is 00:09:22 Martin Lawrence. I feel like that has only come on my radar since you. Bernie Mac. You brought it up at one point. I didn't know what existed. Yeah. But crazy cast. Great movie.
Starting point is 00:09:33 Great movie. Okay. I need to give you a chance to get out of this thing with some hope. Okay. Here's this may be your last hope. There's some that you would think he's seen that are like. Harlem Knights. he has seen our own nights i have not seen our home nights
Starting point is 00:09:53 we live in an entirely different universe have you seen any of the fridays i've not seen any of the fridays that was the that's how he was going to close and i don't know i have all three do you want to borrow austin austin on the text on if you guys are on the text line you could add movies to this austin before i give you the number 10 well they said austin says he got game have you seen what What? I know the greatest thing Ray Allen's ever done.
Starting point is 00:10:23 It's Ray and Dundell. I know. No. Rick Fox and none of that. I imagine you snuck that pass. I bet you snuck that bat. Blue chips? No.
Starting point is 00:10:37 You haven't seen blue chips. I know. I know. You're really mad at Mark right now, aren't you? I am disappointed. I think I saw the remake of chips. Does that count? No.
Starting point is 00:10:49 They're not even the same lane. They're not even the same. Okay. This is the one. I thought he was, look, look, this is for, this is for the over under. And I don't even want to say it. Are you familiar with the name, Nino Brown? No, that doesn't mean anything to me.
Starting point is 00:11:21 So I guess Harlem Night, New Jack City is out. You've never heard, you've never watched New Jack City. New Jack City. City. New Jack City. No. So you pulled a one for 10 out of this. That was good.
Starting point is 00:11:36 Set the over under it, too? My one was, like, the one was the only one from the last, you know, 15 years that you mentioned. So from the last 15 years. Oh, I, actually, some that you should probably, uh, drumline. Yeah. Okay. Okay. As a band nerd, that came out when I was in high school.
Starting point is 00:11:53 Yeah. We watched a lot of doing. Uh, no. Remember the tit. Yeah. Okay. Here's some more. Malcolm X.
Starting point is 00:12:00 No. Coming to America. Loving basketball? I've seen some upcoming. I've seen some upcoming. Yeah, he's not loving basketball. There's the hat. Get out.
Starting point is 00:12:16 No. I know. That one hurts me. That one hurts me. You haven't. I haven't. No. Have you seen us?
Starting point is 00:12:24 No. Same director. I've heard of him. He's okay. I'm taking good songs and making them scary. I don't know how you can do that, but he's really good at it. We've all got our talents. Have you seen Major Pain?
Starting point is 00:12:42 Yeah. Okay. Thank you. We'll end on a high note because we were in. That's it. No, I, look, look, look, I got to give. I'm just reading the text line. The text line is, though, blazing saddles.
Starting point is 00:12:58 Give me another half. Really? He's really good at falling asleep in movies. You haven't made through Blazing Saddle. I'm sure I've pieced it all together over the years, but if you asked me to kind of... Sheriff Bart? Yeah, I mean...
Starting point is 00:13:12 Mongo? I'm familiar generally with Blazing Saddley. Hedley Lamar? It's been a long time. I don't think I've seen it in the last 20 years. Lily von Stoop? Sure. These are all things that ring a bell.
Starting point is 00:13:26 We went to the theater to watch... What was it? Infinity War Infinity War, all of us We went to the theater He fell asleep in the theater Look, that's One, we went to the really late show
Starting point is 00:13:39 And two, I will always fall asleep During the big epic fight scene In a Marvel movie It was so loud And everybody was cheering I get so bored During the big epic fight scene In a Marvel movie
Starting point is 00:13:50 The point where everybody's looking forward I'm with you on that one I'm with you on that I have no use for it It's just explosions and like It doesn't do anything To drive the story forward I know how it's going to end
Starting point is 00:14:00 generally. Not in that one you didn't. I woke up for the important part. I am not a I'm not a superhero Marvel. I didn't really am. Like I find them fun. Like it's popcorn but I find it fun. Okay. So now we need to disclose to people.
Starting point is 00:14:17 So just because black people are in it doesn't make it a quote, quote, black. Yeah, I'm positive. I am 100% positive. This is why I haven't thrown out any suggestions of things I have seen. Hang on, hang on. Tell me what you think.
Starting point is 00:14:30 All right. You remember the sandlot? Right? Because the pitcher, he wore a negroly cat. That's not it. Right. James old Jones being in it doesn't count. Yep. I'm not very important part of the movie. Does not count. Doesn't count. Okay. Remember the Titans even. Um, still not. No, I know. I know. Still not a, a movie that falls directly into the culture. The culture we're talking about. Things that. carry on how people dress how people dance what they what songs they sing etc agreed um jango is not jango is not uh it's a great movie i'll ask this i haven't seen it if you watch it's super violent don't watch it with you kid right good enough uh have you seen roots no that we had a whole conversation my wife and i had a whole conversation about roots over
Starting point is 00:15:29 the weekend no i haven't seen it but my wife has I wonder how many of these she's seen. Lots in our house. I put her over under like, I'm going to wager here that Rico has not seen it either. Uh-oh. Roots? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:48 I have not. Cunta-Kinte. I haven't seen it. That's it. That's everything I know about roots in those two words. I haven't seen it. I try not to be disappointed in people. I try to give people credit, like for things that they haven't done.
Starting point is 00:16:06 And then I learned. And my lesson is to never do that. Seemed like 95% of the movies you've been listening. Just set the bar. Have you seen Rico? This is for you. Now I'm scared. Be scared.
Starting point is 00:16:20 Uptown Saturday night. Nope. Let's do it again. So you don't know who Bootney Farnsworth is. You don't know who Kansas City Mac is. Not a clue. I ate some Kansas City Mac when I was down there at Casey Joe's. Kansas City Mac is a pimp.
Starting point is 00:16:38 He's a gangster. This was different then. It was not that. High off the smalls. This is fantastic. From the text line, and this is a doozy. I've seen that one. The Whiz.
Starting point is 00:16:56 Nope. See that one. I'm familiar with some of the music of the Whiz. You just said, wait a minute. You have to come into town. I'll go see the live show. I'd love to go see it. It originally started as a broadcast party.
Starting point is 00:17:14 It was on, it was on, it was on, Broadway. I know. It toured the country. I would love to go to see it. Michael Jackson's in it. I know. It's the better version.
Starting point is 00:17:26 The movie version? No, I'm saying it's the of the... Oh, of the Wizard of Oz's. Yeah, it's the better version. Sure. It's like comparing Gene Wilder to Johnny Depp with Willie Wonka. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:37 Oh, Gene Wilder's so much better. Oh, I know. This is the better version. Even my kid is like, it's old, but it's better. Yeah. Yeah. That tunnel scene is creepy. how many remakes were actually like that sort of remake was better than the original oh
Starting point is 00:17:55 not many right it's a small list i'm gonna look it up now yeah i to be curious about the movies that have been remade the the the the movies that have been remade into something else that the original stayed better but jean wilder was so good and and and and and and and and and and Willy Wonka that I was offended that they were going to remake it, but that's kind of what happens. Do you see the new West Side story? Yes. How would you compare those two?
Starting point is 00:18:27 I love the original. Me too. Yeah. Love the original. I like what they did with the new one, though. I get what they were doing with it. It added some depth to it. I appreciated that.
Starting point is 00:18:35 Well, but there was star power in the first one. Sure. The first one was timeless. it fit. I mean, Rita Marino and Miss Wood were like you can't
Starting point is 00:18:57 they couldn't cast that any better even though they weren't really they weren't really true to Rita Marino was fine. Rita was there. All of these movies are from like the 50s. Okay. Like not the not the
Starting point is 00:19:12 originals like the remakes. Well they did they did from the originals and the 30s. When they added talking to them, they made it better. Well, they tried to, they tried to redo, guess who's coming to dinner, and put Ashton Coochard and Bernie Mac or Cedric and I, that was terrible. It's also a bunch of movies I haven't heard of. I never even put together that that was a remake of. Right.
Starting point is 00:19:31 Like they just flipped it and it was terrible. What are the movies? Text on which ones, what movies have been remade horribly later? Who's on the list, Rico? Well, I'm looking for the ones that are, I just looked up movie remakes that are better. the original. You haven't seen. I haven't seen a lot of these.
Starting point is 00:19:48 A Star is born apparently. Oh, it's been remade like five times. It's better. So 1937, 1954, 1976. 19706 is actually better than the Lady Gaga. So they say the 54, the first remake,
Starting point is 00:20:06 is the best of them because that's Judy Garland. Yeah. They said that's the best out of all of them. But then the 2018 version is better than the 76 version, It's just what they're going with. It's been remit four times. The 76 one was pretty powerful.
Starting point is 00:20:24 I never saw it. I saw the new one. You and I are going to have a conversation about musicals that were turned into movies. And the movies did well. Yentel. Nope. Fiddler on the roof.
Starting point is 00:20:41 I saw it live. You saw it live, but you haven't seen the movie. I saw it live. You haven't seen the original. You haven't seen the movie. No. Honestly, didn't know it was a movie. The play was good.
Starting point is 00:20:58 Tradition. Yeah. Tradition. Yeah. I could see. I mean, wow. Are you a Neil Simon fan? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:21:11 So all of the Brighton Beach memoirs and... Oh, we've talked about that before. No. I just haven't seen them. So all of the Matthew Broderick, Jonathan Silverman type of... things that started on as plays and became movies. Sounds like the sort of thing I would really enjoy. Haven't seen them.
Starting point is 00:21:31 Like Brighton Beach Memoirs. And then what's the one where Matthew Broderick joins the military and Christian, Christopher Walken is his drill sergeant. Berth Bueh? No. It's fantastic. I do like Christopher Walker. You and I, we talked about it in the car coming back from Beatty.
Starting point is 00:21:53 We had a nice conversation. about it. I don't remember and I haven't seen it. Yeah. Brian says he saw the live theater player Fiddler in the roof. Yeah, there's so much of those. Okay. All right. I'll let you off the hook. I was, I was trying to. Thanks. I'm wriggling really hard over here. I was worried about you, Mark. Like, this is. Do you feel better now? Biloxy Blues. Thank you, Texline. You guys are so good. Biloxy Blues. It started as a play. Ended up in a movie. Again, anytime it's Christopher walking as a drill sergeant. Yeah, I'm interested.
Starting point is 00:22:24 It's pretty good. Okay. We'll get back to sports. I just need to do this. It was necessary. Now, have you seen the five heartbeats? Never heard of the five heartbeats? Shaft.
Starting point is 00:22:38 No. Superfly. No. Which shaft? Richard Roundtree is the only shaft. Okay. Haven't seen it then. Richard Pryor's, Richard, Richard Roundtree is the only shaft.
Starting point is 00:22:52 Superfly. And maybe the greatest black movie of all times, Dolomite. No. Dolomite it's awful. The movie is so awful that it's I do love bad movies
Starting point is 00:23:06 Oh this is this movie is horrible. I am a fan of bad movies. Horrible. Horrible movie. You know me. But it has one of the great things where he writes this poem way down in the jungle deep.
Starting point is 00:23:20 The poem is called Signifying Monkey. Oh. Oh. Oh, I'm interested. At the break, signify a monkey. You may have to believe it. I'm going to get you sucker.
Starting point is 00:23:35 Don, yeah, that's another one that's really good. Don't make me limp after you. Don't make me hop after you. There's some great lines in that, but we'll give back to sports because I want to go through his playoff games. Talk about the hospital. Yeah, sports talk. We'll do that.
Starting point is 00:23:48 We'll do that when we come back. Download our app by searching 93.7, the ticket in your app store. You're listening to one-on-one with DP on 93-7 the ticket to the ticketfm.com.
