It's time to go one-on-one with D.P.
Coming at you live from the Koppel Chevrolet GMC Studios.
Here is your host, Derek Pearson, presented by Beatrice Bakery,
on 93-7 The Ticket and The Ticket FM.com.
Welcome to one-on-one, 402-46485.
Sartar to Hamon text line, onto the Lincoln Hotline.
Simple.
Hit us with a what-up.
I'll answer your questions today.
I'm in a mood.
I'm in a mood.
So if you have questions for Rico or I go through it.
Rico, have you watched any of the Australian Open?
No.
Yeah.
No.
Why is that?
You don't like tennis or because it's just weird hours?
It's just weird hours.
Like, I don't, it's not that I don't like tennis.
I just get confused really easily by tennis.
Okay.
That's breaking news, and I'm a little frightened by that.
and what may be the simplest game that you can watch?
I don't know.
Sometimes I'll be watching it after something.
There's a net and one ball.
No, not by the game, by the scoring and the like the, you know, was like sets and.
No, I know all that.
I know how the game is played.
Okay.
I know how to all that stuff.
That's fine.
There's only four points.
It's the scoring.
And then they're like, oh, and this, this lasted for five hours.
I was like, why did it last for five hours?
What's going on?
on like because the women play three sets and then play five i just can't i don't like i'll watch it and i
enjoy it best of three but i get confused sometimes best of three best of five okay yeah i get that simple
right yeah that's simple okay what it goes by 15 15 love 30 love whatever 40 whatever and then
either if it's 40 all it's you know what's that called you know even i don't know
Was it 40 all?
Yeah.
Is that it?
And then if somebody gets the first point after 40 all, what's that called?
Couldn't tell you.
Add.
Okay.
That's ad.
See, I don't.
Okay.
So and so.
Yeah, I don't know.
And you have to win by two.
Mm-hmm.
Each game by two.
Yes.
Six games in the set.
You have to win the set by two.
With six games that, see, that's, what?
So you have six games in a set.
So you have to win.
So if it's six five, if it's six five, you have to play another game.
And, and, and, and, and, you have to play another game.
And if it's 7-5, it's over.
If it's 6-6, you keep playing until somebody wins by 2.
Unless it's Wimbledon and they actually play points, single points in the tie break.
So tie break, if it's 6-6 in some tournaments, the tie break is first to 7 winning by 2.
Yeah, no.
I'll watch it and I'll be entertained.
And as soon as somebody falls to the ground and it starts cheering, I'll be like, hey, they won.
I know that Rafa's the king of clay, that's my guy.
I now have to watch tennis with you.
Look, the thing is, I'm not going to say anything.
Like, I'm just going to sit there, and I'm going to watch it,
and I'm just going to be like, hmm, hmm.
Oh, good shot.
And then I'll be like, ah, what a terrible hit.
It was out by this.
I'm like, oh, just obviously, bad shot.
Just garbage.
Why would you even do that?
And then I try watching doubles, and I'm just like,
why don't you just hit it?
Like you're right there.
Just get right up on the net and just, nah!
Just watching Rico do play-by-play with tennis.
You do play-by-play for tennis.
Nobody's going to understand what's going on.
I'm like, that was really nice by so-and-so.
Also, I'm not going to be able to pronounce a lot of the names.
And I don't want to be rude and, like, say it wrong.
So I'm just going to be like, great hit by that person.
That guy.
And then the other guy.
Yep. I need somebody who's much better with these names.
It's like I've watched cricket a couple times. I have no idea what's going on, but it's fun.
I'm sorry, that's hilarious. Oh, man. So where do you stand on hockey?
I don't. You don't watch any of hell. I did that hockey. I did the, uh, the, the, the hockey show once.
And they were like, so how do you like hockey? I was like, I mean, I've seen a couple.
couple, but I'm not, like, I'm not the big, like, I don't, I don't know.
I like to think I have good eyes.
I can't follow the puck.
I don't know what's going on.
I just follow the people.
I'm like, they're going this way, so obviously it's over here.
I go for the beer and the fights.
That's me.
And then I made the mistake of saying, I went to Carney, so I was like, yeah, I went to a
couple Tri-City Storm games, and they're like, oh, how dare you?
And I was like, sorry about it.
I was in college for six years.
So there was a Saturday Outlaw bit with Chance the rapper, and he plays a sportscaster,
who norm does like football, baseball, basketball.
But one night they need for him to fill in at the NHL.
I think I've seen that one.
And he goes, okay, everybody, let's do hockey.
Yeah, I think I've seen that one.
And I saw that, I go, that is me.
Let's do the hockey.
Okay, so would you do that for me?
I'm going to send you that that bit.
And I need for you to record yourself reading the script.
Okay.
He did.
I just think that would be perfect.
I can do that.
I can do that on an air.
I hope Rocky Russo is listening.
Oh, man.
That would be fantastic.
I think they're down in Texas right now.
Yeah, they did not do a show last night.
They're on the road.
and they'll be back in the schedule next week.
Tonight,
the teammates mentoring hour for 6 to 7 here on the ticket,
Tom Osborne, Desmond, Desmond, Desmond,
Desmond, Adam's.
So we'll have a pretty good one there.
And then from 7 to 9, immediately following that,
Davis and Raff with Kenny Wilhite and Steve Warren.
That's a pretty good night of radio.
Pretty solid.
That's a pretty solid night of radio.
Tomorrow night.
So, of course, we'll have the Huskers Men's postgame show from six to seven,
trying to effort and make sure that I think Priscilla Joseph and the coaches show might go from seven to eight.
We'll have the women's post game after their game against Wisconsin.
Pretty cool stuff last night with Ashley Skagen and with Cam Chick and Bryce Matthews.
They had Courtney Wallace from the softball team.
So if you're missing the ticket weeknights,
you're missing some great Oscar talk.
I don't know if you went back and listened to the swimming and diving show.
I have not yet.
So the deep end with Audrey Coffey and Reagan Hensie.
And Audrey's like a long-distance swimmer.
And she's pretty good.
Like as a matter of fact, she won the mile in their last.
meat.
But she was telling the story of,
hey,
there's fatigue.
Oh,
yeah,
I saw that.
I saw that clip or I heard that.
Yeah,
like there's fatigue and it's pretty brutal.
And she says,
yeah,
you know,
she goes,
you know,
when you're tired,
you just got to fight your way through it.
And she goes,
you know,
in those cases,
I'm just happy.
I didn't throw up in the pool.
And it was like,
what?
You're happy you didn't.
Pardon?
Huh?
Pardon?
And she goes,
oh,
the pools are cessable.
She goes,
they're terrible.
I was like,
what happened?
She goes,
just, you know, fatigue.
And sometimes I'll just go over to the side and just throw up.
Excuse me?
And then, yeah.
Yeah.
I was like, wow.
Okay, things I did not know happened.
There.
There you go.
That basically she breaks the mile down in three segments.
Which it's a mile.
what are the
it's a mile yeah
so she said the first 200 meters
she's just bored
bored
like she's like she's looking around
that people swimming like she looks at the person
like she sees oh well that person's using their legs
too much early in the race they're gonna burn out
they're not gonna they're gonna suck at the end of this race
you know this person over here
you know their pace is too quick
and then she goes yeah that's i do that for about 200 meters what pardon ma'am and then she says then
for the next 300 then it's uh me being consistent i just want to be consistent right like let the
let the pack weed itself out and for 300 meters i'm just going to be consistent that's what i
also did for 300 meter hurdles i just wanted to be consistent yeah yeah you know like what do you
What do you mean, human?
Not human.
Not, like, they really aren't.
Fish people.
Yes.
Like, and then she said, yeah, and then the final 500 meters, meters, I just quicken my pace.
What?
How?
What are you talking?
You just went 500.
You just, you can't quicken.
Yes.
How are you quickening?
What is happening?
Right.
Like, it was like, okay, Audrey.
Like, you know you're not normal.
How do you have anything left to Quicken?
Like, 200 meters, I need a nap.
Right?
Like, 200 is 200.
If we're talking swimming 200 meters, I'm not even, don't sign me up for that.
Right?
Like, I just.
Hard pass.
So then, and Reagan, Reagan's a diver.
And so, and so Audrey said they swim 17 miles a day.
Nope.
17 is a number that I,
do not wish to hit.
Right.
Different intervals.
Plus they have their on land workouts,
like which is just all like resistance drills and strengthening and that sort of stuff.
And then Reagan said as a diver, she goes, they'll probably do 100 dies a day practice.
You know, on one hand, that sounds fun.
But then you have to think they're not just jumping into the water.
They're gymnasts on a three meter platform.
Yeah.
and trying not to
belly flopped
right if you mess up it's going to hurt
a lot a lot
so she tells the story of
you know absolutely
screwing up and
just biffing it belly fog
total belly flop
and she says the embarrassment
like you're just trying to get
one back up to air
and then to get out of the pool
as quickly as you can and avoid
everybody.
Don't look at me.
Don't look at me.
Just avoid everybody,
including your coach.
So it,
it,
it's,
and she talks about like body awareness and that,
so imagine doing a two and a half
and not,
and trying to spot.
So they had to pick some spot
somewhere in the building
to identify as their marker.
So when they,
as they're spinning and flipping.
This is when I get out of it.
This is when I get out of it.
As you said,
they were just,
they were in Illinois and it was just,
It's just a dark room.
She said, for whatever reason, they painted all the windows to the swimming pool dark,
so there's no sun coming in.
They got them.
But there's no where to mark where you are in your rotation.
That must have been rough.
Yeah, it was crazy.
Because I think gymnasts do the same thing where they find a mark and they try to keep it when they're doing their rotation.
Well, that's, so when you talk to, of course, we had the, the, you know, the Talkin'10 show.
And first of all, so Kenzie Robey, I was going to go to see them compete.
And she was in a boot.
So she said she was warming up for the, for the competition, running down on the vault.
And three steps from, you know, the board, she felt something pop.
They did test, put it in a boot.
She didn't compete her, but I said to step up.
She walks in Monday night without the boot.
Aren't you missing something?
What's up?
You were just in the boot.
No, I'm going to compete Friday.
Ma'am?
All four events.
All four events.
And so...
Just built different.
Oh, she's a little badass.
Like, I, you know...
How do you...
No.
Oh, look, if my Achilles, if my Achilles has any type of twinge, I'm shutting it down for a while.
Like, it's a full sprint.
Oh, yeah.
And launch.
Hey, pushing off of it, landing on it.
Right.
It's a lot of pressure.
Right.
Like, it's that full carry strug thing, right?
Where you're going to land on one foot.
Yeah.
Just prepare the other Achilles for takeoff.
Right.
And so they talk about body awareness and that sort of thing, right?
but then they both they all said both both regan and the gymnast said well really once you get to
competition you don't really think about it you're not really thinking about it you just got to do
it because you should have enough muscle memory to be able to stay consistent to what you've trained
at and I'm like yeah but you're running back flipping onto the horse double triple
whatever it's called whatever it's called and then just stick the landing and you say that's all muscle memory
she's yeah it's just muscle remember they still want you do it your floor routine by the way
what kind of muscles do you have they like they're just they're just wired differently like I don't
I don't have I don't have those kinds of muscles well so because Michaela does a thing like it's
kind of her move where she'll back flip on the beam again this is a four inch wide beat she will
back flip on it double backflip on it and then
And as she lands the double backflip, she will then bounce and flip forward and land on her feet.
Back, back.
Boink.
I'm just.
Seems like an issue waiting to happen for somebody that doesn't know what they're doing.
Right.
Like just like all the bad things.
I've already had two kids.
I'll be fine.
What could go wrong?
What could go wrong?
of so with the diving show swimming dive show they're talking about she's talking about swimming a mile
and so norie new willie was listening to the show and nor he goes he texts in he goes none of
what you're talking about sounds fun he goes he's not wrong he's like none of that like swimming
me trying to swim a mile would be horrible and I'm like okay I need to see that happen I mean I kind of just
want to see, not just, I want to see
the linemen just down and back.
Oh, just down and back. Like just
a race, right? Yeah, just a sprint. Like, would
there be any water left in the pool?
Don't teach them how to dive.
Well, that was the next thing. So when Reagan
was talking about diving, he was like,
okay, no chance. Like,
there's no chance. I'm like, now, but now I got
to see this. And he goes, if I was going to do it,
he goes, I'd go in and I'd just belly flop.
He goes, I could give you a full belly flop.
Is he sure?
Does he know how high they are?
I kind of wanted to see it.
But they...
Like, not to, not like, I don't know if this sounds true, but like he's, he's German.
So he knows the metric system.
He knows the meters.
He knows how high up a three meter board is.
No, he was all, he said he was all in for it.
Okay.
He said he was all in for it.
So a lot of what's going to happen with the athletes from these nighttime shows is that we're going to cross over.
So it's pretty cool.
I want to get the, uh, the, uh, the,
the
similarities between
gymnastics and diving.
Yeah. So they've talked about
so Reagan came on with
Michaela and Kenzie
her first night with us
and they talked about it because the divers
are really gymnasts.
With water. Yeah.
And it was pretty exceptional
thinking of what's required to do that.
Different type of muscles.
Right. Well, no, same type of muscles.
Well, no, I'm talking about from us.
Right.
Oh, oh, I don't have any of those muscles.
No, I don't have any of muscle memory.
I got none of that.
But in the conversation show, then Nouri was like, yeah, well, we'll put like a red quarterback jersey on Audrey and let her come and kind of dive around, like maneuver around linemen to see what it's like to see what it is.
And Michaela says she's terrible an athlete.
She wouldn't be able to throw football.
But it's necessary.
Like some of these things have to happen.
Get them on a baseball diamond.
Well, last night with, so you had Cam and Bryce and then Courtney Wallace, who plays for the softball team, who infielder also pitches like the whole shebang.
And immediately, immediately I want to know could they hit her.
Are they going to do the thing?
Like, it has to happen.
Yes, please.
Right?
Like, I want to see if.
Because I want to see them all strike out.
Oh, it's like.
None of them are going.
to hit it. None of them.
I can almost guarantee that.
Well, there's the videos of...
Even the best baseball player on the planet.
I got to... Well, and I have to phrase this the right way.
I had the opportunity to take batting practice with and against Jenny Fetch.
How'd that go?
I was in the box.
It's a start.
I was in the box where batting happens.
Did you have a bat in your hand?
I had a bat in my hand.
there attempts at swinging. I'm not saying anything else. Let's just say the first four
pitches, the bat never left my shoulder. I was going to ask you your shoulders, your wrists,
your shoulders, your arms got a nice little workout. Oh, they did later. Yeah, okay. But the first
four pitches basically was me being the, the batting dummy for Charlie Sheen in Major League, right?
where I'm just standing there and I'm watching balls fly by.
And those softballs, like immediately as a baseball player, you think this is a bigger ball.
Easy.
Like, this should be easier to hit than the little ball.
But then there's a thing that they do with softballs that's unnatural.
First of all, the release point is different.
So your eyes have to retrain coming from below.
But I've played enough softball with that.
shouldn't be that big a deal.
But then those balls move differently than baseballs.
And I mean, in ways that my brain can't process scientifically.
Like you throw me a rise ball.
My natural instincts is to swing because I see it more clearly.
It's like a fastball up.
I see it more clearly.
But your eyes are lying to you because it's moving faster.
than you think it is.
And it never ends up where you think it's going to end up.
It's coming this way.
It's going to go.
It's going to drop a little bit.
It's going to end up here.
Jokes on you.
It's going to keep going up.
It's going to keep going.
Then she threw what basically was the equivalent of a changeup, which if you've seen the
Bugs Bunny baseball clip where he throws it and all the big dudes, like they swing three times
and never hit the same pitch.
Like they swing at the same pitch three times.
Yeah.
That was me.
That was me.
Like, I didn't even know I could pump fake
swing in a pitch, swinging a bat.
Jenny Finch made me pump fake.
It's impressive.
Right?
Like, I pump fake, like, I'm guessing when this is coming.
So pump fake and then I pulled the back and it still hadn't gotten there.
It still hadn't gotten there.
And you do one of two things as a baseball player.
It's natural movement or I'm going to adapt.
The pump fake was my natural sweet.
The adaption was on the second side of it
where I thought the ball was going to be.
And it wasn't.
And I threw the bat down the third base line.
Like, just take it.
And we had to take a break because Jenny Finch was laughing so hard that she couldn't throw any more pitches.
That makes sense.
That checks out.
Yeah.
So, yeah, that has to happen.
We want him.
I want Camchick and Bryce Matthews.
Although Harvel will probably yell at me because he doesn't want their swing messed up.
It's not going to be for long enough to mess up their swings.
It really is.
They're going to get three swings.
They're going to miss all of them.
If you're out there, Texas, if you're out there, if you've ever, like, I played some, some fast-pitched softball.
But, again, I repeat, having 40-year-old men pitched you versus Jenny Finch is not the same sport.
A little different.
Not the same sport.
I got to watch Lisa Fernandez, who is the goat when it comes to pitch.
She's the goat.
Watching her throw.
And.
And no.
You didn't want to try?
No, she has a curveball.
Oh.
She has a curve ball.
Sounds dangerous.
She has a curve ball.
I'm interested.
I'm interested.
Curious.
I'm scared.
I never played baseball.
I think I got a chance.
No, I don't.
Got to stand in the boxing cat Osterman, who was at Texas and Olympian.
And she's six.
So her and Monica average.
or like six foot and six one six two maybe and they take really big strides that's not fun so through all of like
the the ticket weeknight stuff through all of these engagements all these student athletes there's a lot of
crossover stuff now ashley does want she wants to record just and you can you can verify this
through the segment last night okay she wants to to play you no she wants to she wants to
So hey you.
Look.
And she said, first one, she goes, first of all, I'm taller in Rico, which I love.
Everyone's taller than me.
It's not something to brag about.
No, she's like, I'm taller in him.
But she also thinks she can teach you how to shoot.
Many people have tried.
But this is Ashley Skogger.
Many people have tried.
She thinks she can teach you how to shoot.
The form is broken.
But it doesn't, there's not an attempt anymore.
Like, I don't, I've stopped trying.
I've accepted my form.
is garbage. So I've tried to work with it.
She wants to help you.
Like she's going to kick for Sean's
tail and shooting 101, but she wants to
teach you. She wants to train you.
And record it. I'm a really good defender.
I got you there. Well, she said, well,
she thought she said she thought you'd say that,
which means if you say that to her, she's going to crush you.
I got the lateral, I got the lateral movement.
I've got long arms. Surprisingly long arms for how short I am.
What do you, okay, if you play to 10,
what's the score going to be
against you between you and Ash
well she's going to get to 10
because I'm not going to score
well it's like 10 to like two
I'm not going to score
I don't I don't score like
if I can get past her
I can lay it up
but I don't have the greatest handles
I got I'm good enough
but I'm not
are you willing to have that recorded
I don't care
okay
as long as nobody makes one of my form
Oh, everybody's going to make it.
Because there's going to be a point where she's just going to back off and she's going to be like, shoot it.
I would be like, Ashley, I don't want to shoot it.
Don't make me.
Actually, I don't want to shoot it.
And she's going to be like, shoot it.
I'm like, no.
Don't make, oh, that's so good.
I'm going to keep trying to get to the rim.
That's what I'm going to keep trying to do.
So I'm going to facilitate this.
All right.
Whatever.
This has to happen.
You keep set me up for failure.
Well, but you promised the gym.
the gym.
You would do a Florida G.
Oh, yeah.
I'm still willing to do it.
Okay.
But they're in their season.
They're busy right now.
No, no.
They have time for you.
Like, according to them, Monday, they have time for you.
What time, though?
That's the thing.
Well, I'm going to set this up on the break.
We'll throw it to break.
When I come back, I'll have answers.
