It's time to go one-on-one with D.P.
Coming at you live from the Coppull Chevrolet GMC Studios,
here is your host, Derek Pearson, presented by Beatrice Bakery,
on 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticket FM.com.
Welcome to one-on-one on a Monday.
Appreciate you guys hanging out with us again.
Greatly appreciated.
Kyle Perry will join us shortly from Huskers baseball.
as they prepare and ramp up,
they head to Texas for their opening or opener this weekend.
They leave Wednesday, I believe,
and head down and take on the first,
I believe they're going to play four games this week,
three games this weekend.
I'll check the schedule.
Let's find out.
Yeah, if you would, please.
I got you.
402-464-5-685.
Husker pitcher Kyle Perry.
If you have questions for him,
the start of him and text line is open.
If you want to call in, the Honda Lakin Hotline is open.
You can follow the stream, live video stream on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitch.
This is going to be, that was a quick zoom.
You've gone on that one over there.
It happens all the time.
We'll get him.
Four games this weekend.
18, 2 on the 19th, and then the 20th.
The first one you can catch on ESPN Plus.
ESPN Plus.
All of them will be on Huster's Radio Network.
But, yeah, that's the only one on television, unless, you know, Big Ten Plus has it.
But I don't think so.
Big Ten Plus should have it.
I don't.
Yeah, like, I don't know how.
Yeah.
Quality cameras.
Yeah, the old school.
Tiny little baby square of the camera.
One camera along the way.
You think Big Ten champions would get more.
You would think that...
I think the Big Ten subscriber
should deserve more.
Yeah.
It's hard to watch.
And they're going to get something where you can barely
even see the numbers on the back of anyone's jersey.
That's a tough...
That's a tough deal.
What do your parents say when they're trying to follow you
on the road and, you know,
they've got to peek in? Like, what's that...
Well, it's hit or miss. It's not like
all of them are, you know, awful quality.
But, I mean, and I guess we're pretty spoiled
here in Lincoln when we get, you know,
like our production team does a hell of a job.
So it's like not every school has the, you know,
that same sort of production and it's up to the school,
not the Big Ten to have that sort of production
with Big Ten Plus.
So like at Penn State, it was like you're looking on a,
like a 1970s camera.
I don't even know how I would explain it, but it was, it was.
It's like they thought they, okay, let's brought,
they decided like,
15 minutes before the game to, hey, let's broadcast this thing.
And they did not even change camera view.
No, somebody just took their phone and they just set it up on a stand and they're like,
that'll work.
That's essentially what, yeah.
But it was like one of the first iPhones.
Maybe, yeah, or droid.
Yeah.
It was just bad.
It was all bad.
From Jordan on the text line.
Are you guys going to get Coach Harvall back on the show during the season?
That guy's a great interview.
Yes.
He is committed verbally to doing this show on a pretty regular basis during the season,
but that gives us, leads us the opportunity.
Now, folks know that we have up the middle on Tuesday nights, 6 o'clock from 6 to 7.
But I don't want to bury the lead.
There is a breaking news scenario here.
Kyle Perry, would you tell the folks what we were talking about during the break?
Yeah, I think it would be sick to have a nice little show after every weekend, you know, and feel questions from the fans.
You know, recap the previous weekend and, you know, the weekend that we have ahead of us on that week.
I think it would be a pretty sweet deal to get it set up and, you know, and get some fan feedback as well as some, you know, insight to what's going on behind the scenes, say after a rough weekend or a really good weekend, you know.
they can be we can have full transparency there i think it'd be a really sweet uh really sweet
um opportunity for both the fans and uh players like myself i think it'd be really cool who do you
want to do said show with well i don't know who the lucky teammate would be man i like now like now
you're taking offers right he's going to be sitting in the big chair i have the bargaining power
i can i can go to them say you know who wants to do the talk and then you know maybe i'm having
you know do my laundry for a week or two you know i'm
I don't know.
What are your odds that it's another pitcher?
I have a feeling that one pitcher is enough.
You know, I, that's the thing.
Right.
And they can't be lefty.
Right.
Like,
that's your thing.
That's like sensory overload, man.
Yeah.
But that would be the best radio.
Like,
it would be all over the players.
It would be.
Yeah.
So who are the candidates?
Let's go through.
Maybe we'll ask the listeners who they think your co-ho should be.
That would be good.
Right?
Like you can,
and you can put it on Twitter.
You can put that on Twitter and social media.
Um, say, look, I'm going to do a show.
I have, I have plenty of, man, I have plenty of teammates that I would love to do a radio show with.
Yeah.
Like a lot of like you need a regular.
Yeah, exactly.
But I need, I need Mr.
consistent.
Yeah.
I can't have a, you know, I can't have a Tuesday roll around and they, they want to go play call of duty or something.
Right.
I got to have somebody you can count on.
Somebody you can rely on somebody that's in your head.
I can count on a lot of my teammates.
Something that's where it's in your head.
Yeah.
It knows what you're thinking, right?
They know, they know how to, they know how to motivate you.
You have shared language.
Yeah.
All right.
Fine.
I'll do it.
Well, we'll see.
What Rico does.
I realize that he just committed to producing said show.
I didn't commit to anything.
Yeah.
You see how this works?
It's that teammate you were just talking about.
Right.
Right.
That sometimes you, you know.
I haven't committed to anything.
My commitment means nothing.
Nick will fight you for it, though.
He's already got one.
Because we'll think.
He does.
Tuesday night because no he doesn't because Carter does it now.
Carter does it.
Poor Nick.
Sucks to suffer.
He would have a chance to talk to a pitcher and maybe a catcher and lose his mind.
He himself was a catcher.
He's just going to sit.
I'm telling you he's just going to sit in that other room and have his nose pressed against the wind against the glass.
Like just.
Like a dog wanting to come inside.
Yeah, like please talk to me, Kyle.
Please.
Just throw.
Just let me catch one.
One pitch review.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, we could set that up.
Yeah.
I think that's, I think the campaign starts as soon as this show, this show ends.
Yeah.
So Tuesday nights, let's say nine to ten.
And I think, remember, we're going to have baseball players from six to seven.
So I have a feeling like this is, and then we'll, you know, what I'm going to have, what
I should do.
This should be a softball show after your show.
Damn, that would be a late show.
Yeah.
Well, bowling goes 11 o'clock.
No kidding.
They don't care.
Volleyball goes 9 to 11.
Volleyball goes 9 to 11.
Good Lord.
I can shoot in season.
I need my sleep.
No,
but we can go softball for an hour.
Oh,
yeah.
That would be pretty cool.
But if you want the second hour,
I mean,
like now's the time
before I give it to a softball player.
I already hear myself talk.
Enough.
Well,
you hear yourself talk.
They don't.
Listeners don't.
That is true.
That is true.
That's a lot to cover.
That is a lot to cover.
And I mean,
it depends.
I feel like it would need
like a trial and air week maybe.
Yeah.
Well,
you know.
to see how many fans chime in.
Uh-huh.
Because, I mean, if there's, you know,
a couple hundred fans that want to chime in
and get some serious insight,
that, I'm not against that.
Those are your questions for your social media.
Yeah.
Who should co-host number one be?
Like, who should the main guy be?
Like, key need, needed peel.
Like, so who's your, who's your,
yeah, you're peel in this one.
You're your key in this one.
So peel, yeah, you're the brains behind it.
Okay.
You can pick a funny guy.
This is going to kill me.
It could cause a riff in relationships.
Because people are going to find out exactly how much they mean to you now.
Might be the downfall of Nebraska baseball.
I don't need that pressure.
I don't need that pressure.
I don't want that.
Harville will be calling me, DP.
True.
Chill.
I mean, you can always tell him, you know, I got one full-time co-host, but then, you know, once a week, you know,
somebody else comes on maybe two people come on you know it's okay yeah nobody has to be angry
it and it it's your suit so it can me it could just just maybe be a totally fluid thing
yeah yeah i think we like i like i like that so or maybe i could take the MVP of that weekend
oh that would be kind of oh brice already has a show
that is true yeah in case him and chick him and chick would have to be in case you're lurking
like case he's lurking case he's like look i'm just going to
going to be the go-between for all of this. Like, I'm going to be the mad smasher and everybody's
going to want me on their show. And Casey's a good interview, by the way. Really? Yeah.
Casey's a real good interview, by the way. So, you know, Max is good. Max is fantastic. Max
Andrews is fantastic. Um, yeah, you got some, yeah, some things to consider. So.
Max Anderson is a phenomenal, phenomenal content producer. He is the natural, right? Like,
He's the natural.
He's the alpha bear.
That's what I call him.
Yeah.
Alpha bear.
He, I mean, you look at him and he looks like he's about to go, you know,
hammer out some geometry homework.
Right?
And then he's just going to ruin your baseball day.
Yeah, he's going to hammer some freaking backdoor sliders to the other side of the other side.
Yeah, the guy's ridiculous.
This is going to be exceptional.
We're Kyle Perry, Housker, left-hander as they prepare to head to Texas.
So where are you guys in this week?
What's left to do before you guys pack it up?
hit so just uh just prepare practice wise you know make sure we're all on the same page
headed into the first weekend and uh they've been really stressing you know not to not to look
too far ahead don't press the fast forward button so and that's pretty easy and we're going to be
leaving on uh on wednesday morning so we're going to get a couple practices once we get there so
it's going to be really nice i'm looking forward to it man nice facility right yeah very nice facility
i think it's pretty uh relatively new down there so uh so yeah we're going to be uh we're going to be uh
a good spot and it's going to be cool to open up with you know someone that's not someone that's
not uh in our conference you know it's going to be nice just to kind of get back to a sort of normal
that i've gotten to only experience really almost twice but but pretty much one full season of
you know of normalcy have they have they talked about the the crowd the expected crowd for this thing
well god forbid they have any restrictions on that i don't know i don't know they haven't said much
about it, but, uh, it's got to be pretty cool. I mean, yeah, they have to have fans, right?
You're going to have fans. Yeah. So I'm, I mean, I know we're going to have fans there. So
yeah. Hopefully it's not one of those deals like we went to Penn State last year. And it was,
we're in like a minor league park pretty much. And, uh, dark there were like dark and maybe 20 fans.
But they were Husker fans and they were all yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Like I remember it was fantastic.
It was the day of the, uh, Penn State spring game to. Oh, so. Oh. So, I'm
So I think they had.
That is terrible timing.
Yeah, it was like, so like the streets were flooded with people, but then you go
into the baseball stadium.
Nobody was there.
Who scheduled that?
Yeah.
Well, maybe they thought it would, it would help out fans to come in, but it might have
done the exact opposite.
Wanted no parts.
They weren't no part of it.
So the difference between amping up to win a big 10 title and then achieving that to
whatever this season is going to be.
And you said, don't, don't, don't speed forward to kind of stay present in the moment.
It's going to talk about, though.
Right.
For, what does that mean, though?
Does that mean game by game?
Are we taking the day by day theory and putting it to work?
Are we putting, like, which, which coaching mantra is, is the loudest for you guys?
Well, I think what it really means just like, and I've said it in a couple of pressers,
just kind of like saying, you know, like take every day like it's your last sort of thing.
And I mean, it's, you know, it's cliche.
It sounds, you know, it's inspirational.
But it's like, you know, it's if you really, yeah, if you take it, you know, one day at a time, it slows everything down.
You're not thinking about, you know, stuff out of your control that's happening in, you know, four days, five days ahead of you.
So it's just like, you know, you're just kind of living in the moment, you know.
And it improves, I think, the overall betterment of your team and yourself.
What was the process for determining what the rotation was going to be this week?
We still don't know.
Still haven't disclosed.
We're going to find that out this afternoon.
Right.
But there's been a pretty, a pretty heated, I guess you could say battle going on between me and
Shay Shannon right now.
Okay.
So that's going to snag that opener.
That's about as much as I'll leak out to you.
Stop trying to disclose company secret CP.
No, no, no, no, because it's the keen eye.
It's a keen eye of watching.
So there's the Super Bowl.
And I'm like, I see Griff.
Oh, okay.
Where's KP?
Yeah.
Is there, like in the back of your mind,
in the back of your mind,
so when you and Chanie, get together,
like you just sit side by side.
Yeah.
Is it shared responsibility?
Oh, boy.
Like, are you saying like the job?
The job at hand, right?
Well, man, we're both, we're both captains.
We've both been through, we've both been through the ringer quite a bit.
I mean, we've seen, we came in the same year, you know, we're, we, we, uh, we played against
each other in high school.
We, you know, we know, we've, we've learned the ropes over the years, you know, so,
I mean, and we know, regardless of what role we're given, you know, we're going to go out and,
you know, just to just, yeah, and you've got to dominate that role because whatever role you're
given, you're going to help the team one way or the other if you dominate it.
So, and it really isn't, it isn't that big of a deal.
Say you get the Friday game or the Saturday game.
It's not, it's not about that.
It's really about, because with a lot of guys, sometimes they say that you get that,
you know, you get the Saturday job and they could go, you know, into hiding and completely change up to what they've been doing.
And that's when it backfires when you become that, you know, that self-centered person.
And I don't, and that's the thing with Shane.
I know both ways.
It's not going to be that way.
So you've been in deep water already.
Right.
So a shark shows up.
You're not really stressed about it.
But who's with you?
Who's with you to?
Oh, everyone.
Right?
Everyone.
That's the thing.
Well, that was kind of my point.
You've got depth.
You've got talent.
Yep.
Who should, for the fan that's kind of put baseball and compartmentalized it and put it into March,
they now have to turn that baseball brain on.
Yeah.
Who are the arms that are going to be?
in play.
Oh, shoot, man.
I said it earlier, and I got, in my first press for last week, it was, I think I got quoted
a few times out on Twitter.
It was the, it might sound crazy, but our pitching staff is going to be better.
I think that's what, I think that's what the quote was.
And it's like, it does sound crazy.
And it's not even an arrogant thing.
It's not because literally I'm looking at it on paper, on, you know, in person every single
day.
And it's like you can't, I mean, I'd seriously firmly.
believe that and I'm not I know I'm not crazy for saying that it might sound crazy that's why I say it
might sound crazy but is it is it new talent or improved talent both right both because we got new
talent we had a huge freshman class come in highly tautied kids and huge being the operative because you got
some monsters yeah yeah and and as well as we had we had pieces from last year that might not have
been all the way there to their fullest potential but that still made nests
impact. And now they're even more improved and experienced on top of that. That is, yeah,
and it's shining through every time we throw live and we see the pitchers go. It's,
it's really something. How much live work is, is happening? Oh, three, three days a week. I think
that's what we've been doing in the last few weeks. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well, that, that's a lot of
arms. A lot of arms. A lot of arms. We have, we basically fill the Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
practices with seven to nine innings of work between pitchers.
So that that goes to show you that there's a huge chunk.
That's just a lot of arms.
Yeah, a huge chunk of the day eating up by arms.
Yeah.
Is there is there something for everybody?
Is that the vibe that no matter what's required in a game situation,
you need somebody along, you need a long lefty, you need a mid-righty.
And that's the thing is that they, yeah, they've been,
they've been making those matchups happen in practice and stuff.
And so guys have gotten to see different looks and like realistic looks of what they could be coming into as a reliever.
What they could be facing as a start or whatever it might be.
There's been a lot of looks.
And, uh, yeah.
A big question for Husker fans is you've got to, you've got to fill Schwelley's shoes and glove.
At the end of the bullpen, final inning, final out, who's the final out guy in your mind?
Well, right now, Colby Gomez is there.
He's there, man.
I'm telling you.
And that's, and that's huge.
Well, that was what we forgot, right?
Like, we put it down.
I kind of did, actually.
Right.
I'm mad at myself, but I did.
But that's the thing.
I mean, when someone gets hurt, we all do it.
You know, I mean, they're out of the equation, the current equation.
So you just kind of, you know, to the side.
Well, you went through that.
Right.
I did.
I did.
Yeah, you went through that.
Right.
It was like, oh, I forgot.
And then I was written off.
next thing you know, I'm, you know, throwing so like that, that's the thing.
And it's cool because now Colby's going to start getting that recognition.
And, I mean, regardless, like, guys like that, you know, it's that positive reinforcement.
They like that, you know.
But, yeah, Colby's going to be getting that again.
And it's, I think it's going to be huge for him.
It already has been big for him to just have that from within the team.
So then he's going to start getting that recognition.
It's going to probably eventually get to that national recognition, too, if he keeps up what he's doing.
and he's been, he's been phenomenal.
But, um, look, don't make, don't, don't, don't make us love y'all more.
Hey, look, man.
Just, I'm just, you understand, there's been a lot of cool.
There's been a lot of programs that let, let, let, let the fan base down.
And now, we're all just, poor Kool-Aid all on the grass.
Not, no, no, Kool-Aid.
You can drink it all you want, but I don't even know if this is Kool-Aid.
This is, uh, I don't even know.
This is real life.
What would be the real equivalent to, I don't know.
This is real life.
This is real life.
But yeah, it's, no, he's back, and I've gotten to see him at his best.
He had a couple of shoulder surgeries there that set him back a couple years.
But yeah, to see him back and healthy is a great sign, too.
Speaking of healthy, how is your wing?
Talk to me.
It's phenomenal, man.
It's great.
It's bouncing back pretty well from throwing live.
Last Friday, Shane and I went head-to-head in the freaking, if you remember,
that Friday weather, got pretty gloomy.
I think the real fuel is 25, so it was a little, it was pretty tough.
And you had that crosswind at Haymarket if you've been to Haymarket.
Just to walk through it and take the beating.
Yep, yep.
So it was pretty chilly.
We went three innings both.
It was, it felt great.
It felt great.
I was pretty sore afterwards because it was like almost when it's that cold.
You can't feel much.
You feel like you almost got to, you know, work other things consciously or subconsciously.
It's tough.
You feel for touch.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's a little different.
It's a little tough, but I mean, I've done that a time or two being from Nebraska.
But so some pictures in when weather like that affects, well, it affects fingertips and grip.
Yeah.
Right?
So the forces, you changes ball mode.
How do you manage that and to stay consistent with the way you throw even when the sensory side of it is tons of spider attack?
Right.
Tons of spider.
Oh, look at that.
I'm kidding.
I'm kidding.
There are.
There.
There.
It's some complaining.
Yeah.
Yeah.
No, I'm totally
Totally joking, man.
But no, for me, for me, it's just Roz and I try to and, and doing one of the numbers about every, every two seconds.
What's the rule?
What's the rule until like April?
What can, what are you allowed to do when it's cold?
Oh, well, Rosins never, Rosins.
If Ross never gets banned, then I question, I question, I question the decision makers of baseball.
Yeah.
And the state of.
baseball in itself.
So, but that's, that's really what my go-to is.
And then when it's cold, it's like, do your best to keep it warm in between
innings.
I don't know.
Like, it's not, there's really no trick.
Is there a mitten hand warmer?
Yeah.
But the thing is, you warm it up.
Then you go back out there and it's like immediately frozen again.
So like there's really no, yeah, there's no way around it.
It's almost a bad idea to warm it back.
Yeah, it's, there's really no winning.
when it's that cold.
Well, they say get cold and stay cold so that you don't have to reheat the greater extremes.
But the thing with the pitches is like a lot of pitches are dealt with your fingertips, right?
To feel the seams, you know, on, you know, on your fingertips.
And so when it's that freaking cold out, you can't feel your damn fingertips.
You can't.
And so there's a pitch where my breaking ball, I have to feel pressure right here.
Hell, I couldn't feel the pressure right here.
And fastball, you just throw a fastball.
many times you just, you know, you get your grip and you, you know, you just figure you throw it
the same way. Is that the, is that the real truth that early in the season during cold weather,
you go more to fastball than breaking ball because of control? Probably. Probably. It's been a minute.
And that's the thing is it's been a minute since I've gotten to really throw in those colds,
like last, last Friday when I threw in those in those conditions. That was the first time since
probably senior year of high school where I've had to throw in like actually really freaking cold.
Have you checked the weather reports for Texas?
They look pretty good.
I think they're 50s and 60s, maybe in the 70s.
Oh, darn.
I may have to call games from down there.
But that's, that's the best.
I may have to go to Texas.
That's the best, but that's the greatest thing, man, because opening, we opened up in California my freshman year.
And it was, uh, it was gorgeous to open up a season.
because being from Nebraska, like I said, it's like you open up the season most of the time
and, you know, 40-degree weather and that's pretty nice.
You know, so.
I, even in Virginia, it's coaching in Parkas with mittens on and full, so.
No shame.
Yeah, I don't, I don't miss that.
I loved coaching in Texas.
It was 80 for opening day.
Oh, man.
Sounds awful.
My good.
Yeah, oh, it was amazing.
It was amazing.
And we had, and we were on turf.
Who doesn't want to be in Nebraska?
And we never had snow issue.
We never had snow issue either because of turf.
San Diego State.
spectacular. We'll throw it to break here when we come back. We'll get into this matchup this weekend.
We'll go up and down the roster, up and down that what we'll let Kyle project a starting lineup, a starting eight.
Maybe he'll give us some insight to what they expect there and those folks that are going to battle for him.
All of that and more on 101 and we'll get back.
