You're listening to One-on-One with DP, sponsored by Beatrice Bakery, on 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticketfm.com.
Welcome back to one-on-one, Michaela Curtis from gymnastics.
You almost said it.
It's with us.
Oh, no, I'm going to call you out.
Trying to behave.
What am I missing?
Go ahead.
What I really want to know is why you haven't used.
use John Cena's theme song and your
floor routine.
Geek.
You can do some with this, right?
So
she, no, so
McKayla and I, look, we have this
thing that, look, I have to say this.
You told me you can't
dance.
Which is a flat out lie.
Cue the eye roll.
It's a lie. I wish we had an
eye roll like sounder. Yeah.
It's a lie.
Okay. You do a floor routine.
where literally everybody in the building can't wait for you to start dancing.
Like, what are you talking about?
Okay, that's choreographed.
It's still dancing.
Okay, that's different.
Like, my floor routine, I don't know.
Like I said, it's choreographed.
Now I'm just, like, so comfortable with it, I could just do it wherever.
But, like, if you asked me to, if you just turned on music right here, I just.
Rico.
So if you haven't seen Michaela's floor routine.
Oh, I have.
There's a moment in it where she's done several of her elements.
then she gets to dance and she pauses every single event she pauses when she gets to this point
because it's ma'am it's about to go down that's weird that's that's weird like she's
I don't suspicious I don't like the dance I don't like the dance but watch this it's about to go down
Also shout out to my volunteer coach Sophia because she's the one that created this.
So, and like literally, so we talk about like having a story.
And I guess mine, I don't know, if I'm being honest, don't really think about this story per se when I'm doing it.
I'm just thinking about how sassy can I get.
And at the meet, I think we talked about this a little bit yesterday.
When I kid you not, like if I were to, there was a barrier between the floor, like the podium where the floor was.
was and the um what am i thinking about fans wow um the people the people if i were to like kind of
the regular people if i were to sit on this barrier i i could touch like the floor and i could touch
the fans like that's how close we were so i'm like literally warming up and i look over and i'm like
hey and like the parent i'm talking to the parents because they were literally like as close as you and i are
that's how close we were so i'm like talking to them face to face
and I'm like trying to ignore them because I'm just like,
I don't want to have conversation right now.
I have four minutes to do what I need to do.
And I'm in the middle of my floor routine and I look up and I'm like,
I lock eyes with this guy and he's just like, yeah.
Let's do it.
And he's like not a Nebraska guy.
Like I don't know if he had like a different school on or anything,
but he's just like clapping along.
And then it just kind of made me like, okay.
And then there's the part where she, again, she exhales and it's like,
here we go.
And then everybody,
Everybody gives a, hey, and she lights up like Christmas in New York City.
Like, it's there and to go through it and do it.
And you do it on the beam as well, where you get through your hard elements.
Oh, yeah.
And then when you realize, I got through the hard part.
Yeah.
Let's party.
Yeah.
Well, and I think, too, that's, like, kind of when I smiled, like, right after I did that,
I smiled.
And, like, you can tell the girls are going crazy over there because I'm just like,
I did that's the hard part like obviously everything hard is hard at that point it's gymnastics
it's four inches wide like everything on it is hard I did the hardest part and then I can just have
fun at that point so yeah I just but it's it's it's necessary to have that good time yeah
especially I mean all of the gymnasts are different different different personality profiles
Kenzie's
Kenzie is the
the futuristic cop
from
Schwarzenegger
Terminator. Terminator.
Oh, okay.
You know that just constantly
just runs through everything at a high speed
totally calm, totally chill.
Nothing excites her. No facial
expression. Mission. Just everything.
Mission focused. This is what I have to do.
Right.
Kill Sarah Connor.
Whereas this one here
is a bit of a
Bing, ping, ping, ping.
Yeah.
I'm literally, I want to ask somebody to mic me up during the meet
because it's just super random.
Like, we're out of meat and I'm just still there.
And you attack your teammates when they get a good score.
Yeah.
Like, you will see, Michaela will be on the other end of the floor
and in a full sprint will then zoom into some unsuspecting teammate.
Look, got to keep your head on a swivel, right?
You know.
This is gymnastics, all right?
Yeah, this is real sport.
Keep your head on a swivel.
You might get tackled.
They're all aliens.
I said that last.
You're not wrong.
Aliens, robots, wizards.
Are you going to do the floor routine with her?
I have been waiting for the okay and the date and all that.
I will need to get that.
Well, so this next Saturday is the meet with Michigan.
Yes.
I am going to see, I believe I'm going to be in town.
I'm going to try and take my daughter because we're,
just watching TV the other day
and it was Georgia
and somebody
gymnastics meet was on.
Okay.
And she's just,
she just sat down.
Yeah.
And was just watching it.
And somebody's floor routine came on.
And all of a sudden she just stands up
and she just starts like rolling.
And she's like, I need my jump.
I need my jump.
And I just heard a little trampoline.
So I brought it up from upstairs and she's
bouncing on it. And then she tries to roll off it.
And I go, okay, no, stop.
We can't do that.
That's no.
But she's like, I jump.
I can do that.
I was like, okay, okay.
So now I got to take her out to a gymnastic.
Because we watch basketball, she has a little basketball.
I play basketball.
So we do that.
Now she saw the gymnastics, so I got to get her out there.
Yes.
Well, we had the challenge that we came up with last night.
Yeah.
We want to know who is willing to sign their daughter or son up for gymnastics.
And the gymnastics team will come up with a way, something cool for that, that son or daughter.
I was telling DP, I said by having this platform, like being here at the radio station,
one of my goals, like obviously to spread awareness about gymnastics, because I feel like, yes,
it's a big sport, but I feel like a lot of people, it's only relevant, and I'm going to
say this during an Olympic year.
Like, I've heard this all the time.
Right.
I just think that gymnastics deserves more recognition.
So I was telling DP, I think it would be an awesome goal of mine to just, you know, just,
from somebody listening to this show or Monday nights, whatever,
to sign up their son or daughter for gymnastics just because what they hear about what is talking about.
How young is too young?
It's never too young.
She's going to be three.
That's when I started.
And look where I'm at.
See what I can do.
Yeah.
So I started when I was three.
Kinsey basically walked out the womb doing gymnastics.
Yeah.
The biblical court was still attached.
Did a flip.
Yeah.
But another girl started gymnastics when she was 10.
So it literally just depends on what situation.
My mom was a gymnast.
Kinsey's mom was a gymnast.
So it kind of just, however you hear about it, however, whatever gets you involved.
But no, I was three and I haven't looked back since.
My mom literally, she bought me.
I'm pretty sure it was like a dance type one because it has like the two-two connected.
I wouldn't take it off.
Yeah.
Like for her to clean it, like I wouldn't take it off.
So I think that's kind of when I knew.
Like I did a bunch of stuff like I did.
T-ball and soccer. I did dance and stuff like that, but gymnastics stuck. And, you know, she's already
rolling around doing stuff. So she wants to do it. She was doing flips before she even watched.
She's just rolling around everywhere. Well, and plus, like, I think it's a fun way for the,
for kids to like not even get their energy out, but just play. It's like a jungle gym. Like, I mean,
you're not doing obviously like gymnastics stuff when you're three. You don't know.
But they have like Mommy and Me classes. So Heather Brink, Coach Brink.
please if you would I'd like to have Ellie and Michaela on the mat
look if we're in town I will be there Saturday with Ellie
230 like I think somehow you with Ellie would be
pretty she's already in love with basketball she's the basketball team
those are her best friends yeah those are her best friends but I'm trying to get her to
other you know I'll take it to gymnastics I'm going to take her to softball baseball
I'm taking her all the sports but I'm going to I
just realized I got in trouble because there's also somebody
affiliate with the station whose daughter is a huge
Michaela fan. Oh, I think I heard about this. Yeah, so Mark's daughter
Well, Mark told me to tell him if I decide to go, we're both going to go.
Yeah, his daughter is a Michaela fan.
It was like, wait, wait, dad, you know Michaela?
That was probably the cutest tweet, though.
Kenzie's also there.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But Michaela?
What do you mean? Which is what you mean?
Let's talk about the thing that goes viral because it's so unique.
I think it's just so unique and it's so you.
Gummy bears.
Like if I had to describe you, I was like, no, just watch the video.
And this will tell you who Michaela is.
Like she lives at 11.
Like she can't do 10.
10 doesn't work.
10 is too basic.
She works at 11.
Take us through the moment.
I'm assuming you're talking about my beam.
Mm-hmm.
Okay.
So I was in the exhibition spot.
So I was kind of like, do what you need to do.
And might I add, I know I kind of touched on it a little bit yesterday, the guys team, the men's gymnastics team was there.
So you were showing off.
Well, no, I wasn't showing off.
But they were loud.
RICO.
She was totally showing.
100%.
A boyfriend.
100% showing up.
No.
But it was like, because so Beam is facing, like if I'm looking at UDP, BEM is facing this.
way and the guys were like in that corner so they were just being super loud and I was like I could feel it I was just like yep this I don't at this point I don't even no I don't care about my performance because like I do care obviously when you get up there but it's not as much pressure when you're in exhibition because you literally have nothing to lose and too I was like just have fun I mean the house is packed you have the guys team up there who is encouraging and when I the only reason why I'm hitting on them is because
I feel like their energy.
Like, so they had a home meet a little while ago, and the girls came, and we're screaming
our heads off because I feel like they get fans, but they don't get as many as us.
So we're just kind of being obnoxious.
And they're really good, though.
Oh, yeah.
I mean, I think they're ranked like third or fourth.
Right.
And we're just, we're going crazy.
And just that's how we are.
I mean, we have some of the girls that are dating some of the guys, so, like, there's connections
there.
but there's this little girl I was sitting a few like I was sitting in the same area where the guys sit like up into the corner and I'm yelling and screaming my head off I don't have a voice at this point and this little girl just kind of looks at me
you know just looks back at me like I had foreheads and I was like at that point like you just have to go crazy
you can't be down there doing the gymnastics so you have to show them your support by being loud
I mean that's what you thrive on and so when the reason why I said by having the guys being there
and just yelling and screaming and being obnoxious it you feed off of it and so I was kind of like
pumped at that point because I was just like I'm given this chance I feel ready I feel excited
and I switched my routine around at this point
because I felt a little more confident
with what I'm doing right now
and so I got up and I hit that skill
and I was just like oh I'm good
so at this point like I'm just kind of going through
and I'm finishing and I'm finishing
and I'm just smiling kind of give that attitude
and I land right that dismount
and I land it
and in college you're there's a rule
where when you land that dismount
your heels have to come together
I don't know why I think it just
shows you're done. I didn't even get to that point before I threw my head back. And if I'm being
a thousand percent honest, I've tweeted this, I've commented this, I didn't know I bent that far back.
I didn't know I was that bendy. And people like to comment that my arms are like equal to the
floor. You didn't know that you high five the mat. No. I didn't know that my bun was literally
touching my butt. Like I didn't know that. And so I'm like sitting there. I'm just,
throwing my arms at the mat as if I just won gold at the Olympics.
Well, you're fighting ghosts is what it looked like.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
There was an uppercut in there.
Did you win that fight?
Yeah.
Dominant.
Dominant.
You see?
I saw that.
Untouched.
And so my Twitter blows up at this point.
I'm just like, oh my gosh.
It was so funny because a lot of people are just like, this is the best thing I've ever
seen.
Like if you're going to go crazy, go crazy.
Go crazy.
And then somebody was like, I would have deducted for that.
That was so ugly.
And I was like, you're just mad.
can't bend that far like
absolute 100% truth so
I don't even want to say support
because it's not even something like whatever
and I saw
one of the guy gymnasts sent it to me
yesterday um I put it
on my uh story
uh
like I don't know if
famous is the right word but like a
gymnastics podcast
talked about it and was just
saying how it's the most gymnastics
gymnastics thing ever
Yeah.
To ever gymnastics the gymnastics.
Yeah.
Literally like they put it in slow motion and everything.
Oh, the slow motion is epic.
Yeah.
So I don't know.
For me, I was just like, oh my God, it's still being talked about.
Well, you have to share the slow motion version with 937 the ticket.
It looks so painful.
I will.
Just listen to this.
Yeah, share it with 937 the ticket.
Oh my gosh.
It's not even.
So you have to turn it up.
Well, you know, turn down for what?
The largest college salute ever college.
Yes.
The arch is profound.
It is, I mean, that is like the level of head release
that the women's technical committee in the FIG is looking for on a switch ring.
Like that, it's that much head release.
She does a one and a half to immediate throw your head onto your butt,
sheep jump with no feet hitting your head.
Yeah. Yeah.
Then there's no salute to it.
There's no like acknowledge the judges.
She just basically doesn't back bend.
She salutes afterward, but she pumps her fist twice, as well you should.
I fully support that to normalize that as the landing in college gymnastics.
The judges are less important than your celebration.
So, you know, you should always, like, accidentally punch a teammate, and then you can salute, and that's fine.
I'm for it.
That's not what the code says, but that is what I would like to say.
I am here for it.
I'm here for it.
All right, we'll throw it to break.
We'll come back.
We'll close out one-on-one.
And then we'll set up for Vasson Jackson.
He's got quite the show.
The captain will follow us up.
McKelley, have you met Vreschon?
I don't think so.
I'm not sure the universe.
Isn't this the accumulation of thunder and lightning in a small space?
I'm interested.
I think we might have to leave.
I'm here for this.
I am this.
How many panes of glass?
Do you think break?
This just got really interesting.
Stay tuned.
