Back to one-on-one with D.P.
Presented by Beatrice Bakery on 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticketfm.com.
Let's bring him back with the WWE, Henry O. Godwin.
Mark Canterbury, and again, thank you, Mark, for making time today.
The pigs are going to miss you for a little bit, but we appreciate you giving us time to catch up, bro.
I love our talk.
I already got them fixed up for the day.
They're fed and everything's good.
So talk to me about this farm.
Like, how many pigs do you have?
What are we talking about?
I got four hogs right now, but one of them is getting ready to have pigs this week, within a week.
So it'll be busy time again.
But, yeah, we got 10 acres and we got chickens and hogs.
So we're self-sufficient right now.
Yeah, I'm going to have to, again, I don't have to make.
that trip. The next time
you're doing an autograph
session somewhere, you
let me know, we're going to come,
I'm going to bring the setup, we're going to sit down
and talk wrestling. We're going to sit down
and talk. Where are you at
now again? I'm in Lincoln, Nebraska,
bro, home of the Huskers.
Yeah, yeah. And
you know, not for nothing. You let
me know when you want to make a trip, come watch
from Husker football, because I know you'd love it.
Oh, my God, love it.
Come all through.
love Nebraska ball.
You know?
Yeah.
I tried to explain that to folks here,
that all of us, we grew up watching the Huskers, even in Virginia.
Like, that's what we focused on.
Yeah.
So it's there.
So we did, we got a little March Madnessy in us, and we said, okay, we need to come up
and find out who are the greatest tag teams of all time.
We can only pick four.
So we need a final four of tag.
team wrestlers.
So, Mark,
who's on the Mount Rushmore of
Tag Team Wrestling?
Who would you put?
Well, you've got to go, and I've seen
them at Russell Con last
week.
The
Rock and Roll Express.
Got it. Love it. They were a one seat.
Yep.
You have to go with
Cornett and the Midnight Express.
You had them in there.
Good.
I'm going to go back to old school, somebody who influenced me, both of them,
Oli and Jean Oli and Arne Anderson.
The Minnesota Recreck.
Yes, sir.
You could go any one of the Andersons.
All right, that's three.
Who's the four?
Oh, my gosh.
This is where it gets tough because we said we went through the four horsemen.
We went through all of the different versions, degeneration.
X, we went through the briskos, we went through
Dustin Nikita, we went through the road warriors,
we went through all of those.
Who makes the final
takes the final spot?
I'm going to say Henry and Phineas.
How about that?
Yeah, baby.
Who didn't notice what would have happened?
We were a great tag team.
Me and Dennis could just look at each other
after a year together.
And we've been together for many years, 30.
Yeah, yeah.
But to just look at somebody and know what you're going to do next is a very comforted
and feeling, and it makes for a successful tactic.
Yeah, I think great performers.
And then, of course, you know, them finding the, adding the, you know, adding Jim to
the mix and giving you the additional boost, I thought, okay.
This thing's going to go places.
Again, we were sitting back, and everybody that knows you,
knows how big your heart is and how grand you are.
We were just celebrating.
Look at Mark Go, man.
Look at him go.
We were so proud of you.
Okay, so who's on the Mount, the four faces on Wrestling's Mount Rushmore?
There's only four.
Four.
I'm going to say Dusty, for sure,
because he was a big influence
and we spent a lot of time with him around wrestling
and even on a personal note
we would go out to Dustin's house
just me and Phineas when he was married to Marlena
and we were on WCW
well look who's coming
rolls up in his caddy big dusty
it's like sitting out of the learning tree
you know there was nobody else around but us
so we had him all to ourselves
and we would,
we cherish them moments
because, like I say,
it was like sitting under a big learning tree.
That's so good.
And you got a foetaker in there
because what he's achieved,
30 years of success
and evolving, you know,
with every change
and still being himself
and true to himself and his family.
And so he's got to be in there.
I'm a little personal, but as far as a good guy, a big kid with a big heart,
I've got to go with Yoko Zonal.
Co-factor at a BSK.
Yep.
Then I guess you got a throw flare in there.
Burgudgingly.
Regudgingly.
It's like, okay, I got to put you in because I got to put it in.
Did you work with Rick?
Did you work with Rick?
Yeah, back in WCW, we worked with him and our.
Yeah, we did.
Who was your favorite person to wrestle against, to work with?
As far as I liked working big guys also.
And we talked about this at WrestleMania with some of the older guys and a few of the newer guys.
and we met, you know, a big Van Vader.
He's another one you've got to put up there, too.
He was inducted in the Hall fame,
and we met his wife and son and really nice people.
But Leon, Vader was hard to work with.
I mean, if he really had to trust you,
and he used to, you know, I used to do a lot to him.
You can go look back at some video, me and Phineas,
working him and Mankind.
When you start Power Slam Invader, you know, you must have a little bit of a hump behind.
You know, he trusted me and I trusted him and I had some good matches with him.
I loved working him.
I liked working Taker.
Kevin Nash, probably two of our favorites was in WCW was Charles, two cold Scorpio,
Marcus Backwell.
Buff.
Buff.
Oh, my goodness.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And we've seen Buff that took a picture with him at Russell Con last week.
So, I mean, it was really nice seeing everybody, Diamond Dallas Page.
We talked to him and, you know, honky-talk man.
I've seen Jeff Jared and Road Dogg and Ron Simmons and Teddy Long.
We took a picture together.
we hung out with them
two of my favorite guys.
Ron's a sweetheart too.
And just
and people forget
just an incredible athlete.
Just an incredible athlete
for a state.
What he did,
him and my goodness gracious,
that was it.
If I asked you to
think back to
winning the first
WWE tag team title.
So the first time
the God went to get the belt.
Madison Square Garden.
Madison Square Garden.
who's it against?
Walk us through
just the moment
where you get the pen
and you get the belt.
Oh, my gosh.
Well, it was sold out.
They said the fire marshal
was raising hell
because people were standing in the aisle.
So it was really packed that night.
And what, I mean,
Mass Square Garden,
what an awesome feeling.
I'm sitting here by myself
but I'm getting cold chills right now.
Man.
to be in that kind of atmosphere.
And when you hear that you're going to get the belts,
and that's the first time,
it was against the body donnas,
and they were managed by Sunny.
One day we'll tell stories about that.
That's a whole other episode.
But anyway, you know,
Hillbilly Jim was Armander.
And I remember when that three-counted that bell rung,
the place erupted.
And it just, I just, I thought I was going to melt.
My legs got weak.
But I ran and jumped up and almost jumped over Hillbilly.
And he's, you know, six five.
But I was around his neck like a crazy spider monkey.
Right.
And I was like, oh, my God, we really did this.
And I had a John Deere hat that I always wore.
And I threw it out in the crowd.
And we were up there at,
a signing in New York City
and the person who got that hat
it was at Hard Rock Cafe
I remember now
come in we did a big signing and he had that hat
and I signed it for him
so that was pretty awesome
just little things like that stick in my mind
you know that I mean because that moment
like every wrestling fan
kind of feels like
okay what would that that must be pretty
spectacular. Like that
moment where the
final three count hits
slaps, and then
they give you belts and then they give you
those titles.
And then that moment is what most
wrestlers want to talk about more than anything
else because there's
nothing like it.
Oh yeah. I mean, the eruption from the
fans and just seeing
I mean just people cheering
and laughing and throwing their
hands up and they hit your
usually get after that bell rings and they hand you the belts and that first time i can hardly
remember the second time but the first time was will always stick in my heart you know it's just
something you don't forget and just seeing phineas and and seeing the look on hillbill's face and
phineas's face and hell i know the look on my face was crazy but yeah it was an awesome time something
you'll never forget.
Through.
Just like the hog pin match.
You know, one in the belt and masses where garden
in the hogpen match were two great feats for me.
It just, I mean, in retrospect, as you sit now, you're what, 57 now, right?
So, 158 last month.
Birthdays, oh, happy belated birthday.
I know your birthday's in March, so I have to remember that.
But at this phase, right?
where now you get victory laps around it,
and you get to show up at these events.
Of all of this, right?
Phineas is the guy that you spent the most time with.
What is that relationship like now?
Oh, it's stronger now.
We get teased.
I'll tell you a quick story about WrestleMania.
You know, the office called, set all this up.
You know, Mr. Canterbury, you got a room.
Mr. Knight, you got a room.
So we tell Jenna that works in the office,
We said, Jenna, we don't want our own room.
We always room together.
Just be one room, man.
And, you know, the nasty boys, there was another tag team.
I forgot about it just now.
But, you know, a lot of these tag teams, they never roomed together.
They, half of them didn't like each other.
Right.
Half of them got along just because of the business.
And they'll tell you that.
Yeah.
But with me and, with me and Tex, it was always, you know, we've never.
had a crossword in 30 years and it's been 30 years 1992 is when wcW put us together
right and we lived together in marietta and we always rode together we roomed together and
it's just uh it's been a great relationship and he's a true brother and a true friend
i i have to tell you this in public i'm so stinking proud of you um
I we need to do this more because you one you're a great storyteller and two you have so many stories to tell
and it's it's one thing here for days dp I but that's but that's mark that's what we need to do
our listeners love wrestling and they've been egging me on like listen man you need to do a weekly
wrestling show I need to I'm going to call you later today we'll find out I just need I think I need
an hour from you each week we'll do it by
phone or we can we can even stream in video but we'll find an hour in the week where we can just
talk wrestling and tell stories yeah and you're the right we're doing a lot more of the we're
doing virtual signings we've been doing some of them but in this month the 23rd will be in
Newark new jersey for think ink signatures doing a signing for them and a prior an hour private
signing and a four-hour signing. It's all virtual, you know. It's pretty cool, though. He's good,
people. Nick Christie is his name. And then May 29th, we're going to be up for a Ken. He's a promoter.
We're going to be in Queens on the 29th of May at a comic bookstore, I think, and then we do
private signing. So we've got some stuff coming up. Yeah, one of these I need to get to,
and we'll just set up a table and sit and have conversations. But I think a weekly
a weekly conversation with you.
Just storytelling from the road
and the things that can go on, man.
Like I said, this was good for my heart,
good for my soul.
Please give Tracy a hug for me.
