You're listening to one-on-one with DP, sponsored by Mary Ellen's Food for the Soul,
on 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticket FM.com.
Welcome to the Big Ten Football Media Days, Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Indiana.
Mary Ellen's Food for the Soul, greatly appreciated the folks from Gary Michaels Clotheaers
and Ben Blanker Professional Realty Group.
Again, you guys have been on fire on the text line.
stay, stay live, stay connected.
You guys are on point.
We're getting the stuff that we need to get,
and it's greatly appreciated Mel Tucker up on the big stage with the big mic,
and I'm just saying he's a vibe.
Mel Tucker is a vibe.
Mel Tucker will he could put on pads right now.
Yeah, he's, he looks hard.
He looks like the Craig Hayward.
Right?
Like he looks very strong and hard head.
Right?
Like he'll walk through a wall right now.
Suit is tight.
Well, the wall would move.
The wall would move from all time.
The wall was like, no, Mr. Tucker, listen, my apologies for being here, I will get out your way.
I'm kind of glad we missed him this year.
Right?
Right?
Yeah.
I don't, you know, there's no telling what he's going to bring to the table as far as what he's going to put together.
Missing the run game, though, but he's got some great talent.
You had a chance to sit down with a few of them right then.
Well, when they tell the story of having their boundaries, their four H's and they have their boundary and that they're connecting in a way that beyond football, off the field,
the space that they're in, that it's purposeful, that even changing, flipping their record
and going to 11 and 2, that that's still not good enough and not the standard.
Listen, man, if somebody is 11 to 2 and they tell you that's not good enough, hello.
Hey, and then that they're still committed to doing the extra work.
Eric Strickland, Husker Hall of Famer sitting with on one-on-one.
And this vibe, right?
You've been able to move around and see the guys roll in, the different vibe,
and now some of the measuring where the players are engaging each other.
Yeah.
Which didn't happen yesterday.
Yeah.
A little bit of different vibe today, right?
Yeah, yeah.
You read about that.
Right?
To see that, can you imagine back in the day being able to be in the space where you and the guys could just engage one?
Commune a little bit.
Right.
A little talk, right?
And it's not, it's respect.
respect for each up.
Like a basic respect.
This conference, the SEC does a really good job of it,
but the Big Ten is getting it.
And this event allows where coaches engage,
because they're in the back engaging.
The coaches hung out.
The athletic directors were hanging out.
So they knew this stuff.
It's good to watch in full on mouse,
and that's why we're here.
It's just be able to tell the folks, listen.
Here's what's going on behind the scenes.
Here's some stuff that you may be missing.
Let's bring you a little insight.
We were talking, so of course, the Michigan State guys brought up deep water.
Like, that's their thing, is taking people into deep water, right?
Finding teams.
What does that mean?
Do really people know what deep water was.
Well, they went in and they gave the example that Mel Tucker put in a film of a cheetah.
You know, who's just drinking water, and the alligator came up and snatched in and said,
listen, we're not going to fight on your space on your grounds and where you're comfortable.
We're going to take you to our crib where you're not that.
that cheetah no more.
You just meet.
Like, we know, we've got a plan.
We ain't coming out here.
Like, the cheetah had a shot.
Look, if you're going to go to the alligator's house,
you better be prepared to drag that alligator out into space.
That part.
Right?
Michigan State has a plan.
Like, they talked about, we had a text to talk about luck.
I'm like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Sports, there's no, no, no, no.
There's good breaks.
Preparation.
There's no luck.
Preparation meets opportunity.
That's the definition of luck.
Preparate, you were prepared.
Look, that alligator had a plan.
Michigan State had a plan.
You don't just accidentally walk into 11 and 2.
Not in a Big Ten conference.
No, you don't.
You can accidentally end up at 3 and 9.
Right.
Whoops.
Right.
Like, hey, but you better change your plan.
So I asked, what is Nebraska's deep water?
What's the thing that Nebraska can do better
that's going to turn it into a nine win team
rather than nine lost team.
What is there deep water?
Passing game?
Is it new coaching?
Is it new IQ?
Is it a stable of running?
Of coaching the players up and making them better than...
Right.
All the things that you need to know.
Defensively, you know, hey, do we have new...
We have new pass pressure.
We can do different things.
Maybe, as you said this morning, maybe we can get home.
In four.
Maybe we can get home.
Now, maybe you can get past pressure.
Maybe you can make some of these big 10 quarterbacks
get the ball out of the hand and make bad decisions and use bad footwork.
Maybe we can take away some of it.
Like you said, what you did against Michigan State, where you shut them down in the run game.
But you have to have the plan for what you're going to do after that.
Like you did a great thing.
You shut down the number one runner in the country.
You shut him down.
But.
Couldn't finish it.
But, and I keep repeating this, the most difficult thing in sports is to finish.
Couldn't finish it.
Right?
It's to finish.
And the difference between great, good, and not so good is how you finish.
Yeah, yeah.
There would be no difference in a basketball game, right?
At all.
You shoot the ball very well.
You're shooting 50%.
You're good 42% from three.
You're in the game.
The game is tight.
You're up three and you can't freaking make free throws.
Can't make free throws down straight.
And you can't close the game.
And you can't have pressure.
You can't have pressure when you up and they decide,
Hey, you know what, we're going to put pressure up on you.
Right, because everybody plays well when you're up big.
Yeah.
There's no stress.
Yeah, you shoot the ball.
Oh, everybody shoots better.
You shoot better.
Tight.
Except when somebody jumps in your shorts and then you got to figure out, well, how am I going to do this?
Wait a minute.
I'm thinking about this person in my space.
I'm not thinking about my mission.
And that's what I...
It's the same thing in football.
You've got to make that tight throw in that tight window.
You've got to be able to get this first down to keep the...
keep the drive moving when you're deep in your territory you got to protect your
punter all that stuff you got like basic stuff like you got to protect your punner
bro that's a 17-0-nothing game late and somebody blows an assignment yeah and it's a big
assignment yeah and you didn't have a backup for it and it puts you as they say in
deep water right it was like oh I'm in a battle now I was I thought I was chilling
I'm the cheetah chilling on the beach.
I'm chilling.
But now the alligator bit back and now I got a chance.
You had a 10-point lead and couldn't get off the field.
Couldn't get off the field.
You couldn't make the basic plays.
Full mission.
Defend the goal line.
Full mission.
Even if you bend.
Don't get beat deep.
Through all of this stuff is in play, man.
It's just fascinating to me, right?
And we'll hear from Ohio State.
We'll hear from Wisconsin, right, programs that are established in how they do business,
how they stay out of deep water, other people's deep water.
Look, you go to Camp Randall, that's deep water.
Memorial Stadium is deep water.
You have to make it unfriendly for people.
Right?
Like, you got to make it unfriendly for people.
You know, you go to horseshoe.
Like, oh, you breathe all that in and you get caught up with people,
the arrogance of fans who just believe.
leave the things good things are going to happen.
Remember what that was like in Nebraska where the arrogant,
you walked in the building,
you just knew it was going down.
You knew it was going down.
It's just about how much it was going to go down.
Yeah, like, oh, here we go.
Here we go, right?
Like, here we go.
When teams played that old Big 8 champion, Husker team,
and you know, oh, here they go.
Like, they're starting to sniff.
They're starting to bark.
What are we going to do?
Like, I can't get coach.
Strick is in my way.
I can't get through.
Oh, you got a big in the back who'll clean it up.
Oh, you got a point guard who, quite frankly,
disrespects everybody with how good he is early.
Like all of those things.
You have a chance.
This program has talent, it has resource, it has access,
and it has the best fan base.
Do not go soft into believing or hoping that it's just going to happen
because you want it to happen.
You got to go take it.
I want to know.
I want to know what they're going to do to get it.
done because we see people who are getting it done.
Like we know there's an actual way for a program in the Big Ten to end up at Lucas
Oil Stadium in the championship win.
There's a way for this to happen.
Yeah.
Can we find a way?
I think one of the things that when you make reference to that in the past is when
things were on the line, you knew that there were things you can count on.
you knew that, you know, you had a Grant Rich Wisdom who is motor is going to get you there.
You knew you had a Domlican Suu who was going to blow something.
You knew you had an Amon Green or a Lawrence Phillips who can get you that sense.
You know, you knew Tommy if he had an opportunity was going to make the play.
You know, you kind of knew that that was going to happen.
Whereas that's a little different.
So I'll ask this.
We'll go to break real quick.
But I'll ask this.
Is it Casey Thompson and Garrett Nelson and O'Shawn Mathis and Trey Palmer?
Is there enough and for Nebraska to change their location and elevation?
That's all we're here to find out.
And we're measuring up against everybody else.
We're going to see.
Yeah.
We're going to see.
Rico, take us a break again.
We're alive at Big Ten Football Media Days here at Lucas Hollow Stadium.
We'll keep bringing it to you.
We'll keep having a discussion again.
You guys have been exceptional on the text line.
I will read them all when we come back.
