Austin Norman here at Nebraska assistant coach Lance Harvel.
They're right, coach just take us through maybe the next couple weeks up to Thanksgiving,
more individual skill work for hitters and pitchers.
How much of that is, oh, these are the drills we're doing, you guys fit in, how much of that
is, hey, here's what we noticed from the data we collected in the fall, and then, you know,
making a strength stronger or shoring up maybe a deficiency or weakness.
Yeah, it's a little bit of both.
And we have those meetings immediately after fall ball.
We have individual meetings with everybody to kind of go over that stuff and lay
out the plan for them moving forward and so we spend you know the next six weeks which we're
right in the middle of that now working on those things and so yeah some of it it's it's you know
still keeping the keeping the blade sharp with with what they're good at and then trying to
bring up you know maybe some some deficiencies and trying to get them up to snuff as far as that
goes but yeah we just kind of adjust it's more like mechanical adjustment type stuff and it's
It's a lot of just, you know, maybe a little, maybe just like hand placement on stuff or a grip on a pitch, you know, maybe something like that or just toying with some different setups with some hitters and some different things, changing their feet up, you name it.
There's all kinds of little stuff that we do.
Some of them, it's, it's, this is what you're going to do and we're going to, we're going to roll with this.
And some of it is, we're going to play with some things.
We just need you to be open-minded about it and we're going to, it's going to be a little trial and error, but we'll figure this stuff out.
And it's then the continuation of tracking the metrics and a lot of those things, too.
When you're done with this, the six weeks, then, that instructional period,
what does kind of the Christmas till the start of your season look like for these guys?
Are they on their own?
Do they have their own places back home they go to?
They work out here in Lincoln.
What's kind of the plane for them once you can't have as many hours with them?
Yeah, they're on their own kind of with guidance from us.
So they all have a hitting plan.
plan. So if they're going home for the Christmas break, they've got a hitting routine, a
throwing routine, you know, the infielders will have specific, you know, drills and stuff
they'll do for fielding and glove work, things like that. Pitchers will have a throwing
routine. And so same thing with the weight room and all that kind of stuff. So they have a plan
or when they're on their own. And some of them, you know, we kind of, we'll ask them, you know,
what most of them have, you know, they go back to their high school or they have some
place that they go hit or something like that or somebody that that's what we have to you know
kind of make make sure of and customize their plan however we need to based on what they have available
to them when they go home you know we've got all kinds of technology and every bell and whistle and
all the kind of stuff I pitch machines and hit tracks and you know track man stuff there we know
they're not going to have that that stuff but um we've got you know blast motion sensors and
things like that things that they have on their bat that they can they can track one thing new
that we've done this year, uh, each, each hitter has their own iPad now. And so they can keep all of
their information, all of their metrics, video, you name it on that stuff. And then upload it to know,
and we can, we can see it, you know, while it's, um, it's, uh, there's still, you know, a very
and a high level of accountability with that stuff with, with, with us tracking it without us being
right there with them or directing them daily on, on what to do. They've got their plan. They can
follow um and and for the most part it's it's not going to go like steer away from what they've
been doing they're already in a really good routine of knowing just from on a day to day basis
what's expected of them what they got to do and so um that's usually the biggest thing and then
just whatever they're doing in the weight room i just staying healthy you know that kind of thing and
so then then it just kind of becomes from a coaching standpoint just to the communication staying
in touch with guys so you know how they're how they're feeling um you know
and kind of coaching from afar when you can you can look up some video or something like that
and say, hey, you know, what are you, what are you feeling here?
How did you did yesterday?
Just staying, just kind of staying in touch with them, keeping your finger on the pulse there.
Make it out of fall ball as healthy as you guys would have liked to?
Yes.
Yes.
Yeah.
A couple guys with some injuries, but nothing, nothing major, you know, and all stuff that guys are,
I mean, some of them that had some nagging stuff there at the end of the fall are already coming back.
and they're you know they're participating in in the day to day stuff so they're already kind of getting
back there so yeah just got a got a couple more weeks now to make sure we stay healthy finish finish the
fall healthy that's that's the key at this point is is the balancing act of you still want to
push to make sure we're getting better but you also don't want to have kitty gloves on either you
don't you don't want anybody to get hurt but you can't really handle with kitty gloves
and so that's that's that's the that's the balancing act that's always a always a chore this time of year
how important then to i mean now they're on campus is the the training staff right and finding
you know their input on it and then finding guys too that know their own limits when they can
push through the normal soreness and also guys that know their body of oh wait well and this
is actually kind of uncomfortable i should maybe you know throttle down yeah huge tanner fowler
is our athletic trainer he does a fantastic job um and has a baseball background so kind of
understanding that, you know, that element too.
Same with Garrett Plumley, our strength coach, baseball guy, and Riley Loy, who's our nutritionist,
all of them kind of working together.
And then Kyle Nicholson, who is our new player development guy, just kind of pooling all
of the information from all the sources and keeping it all organized and everything.
So, you know, we had a two-hour meeting earlier this week, just going through the roster
and making sure with academics and sports psych.
Like, cross the board, you know, every single guy going through the roster saying,
okay, where are we at?
Are there any red flags we need to know about how can we finish the fall as strong as possible on and off the field?
There you go.
That's Nebraska Assistant Coach Recruiting Coordinator Lance Harvel with us here on one-on-one with D.P.
