Starting point is 00:00:00 Boom. We are here live here on one-on-one on 93-7. The ticket, there's going to be some different voices. I said, yes, some, because we've got three people in the building for one-on-one on one today. Myself, Jake Bachman, Nick Sandron, and Austin Orman in the studio. But there's plenty to talk about a whole host of Oscar games yesterday. Another one coming up here. And, of course, the football game coming up this, this Saturday will be a big one from Happy Valley. So we've got plenty to talk about guys. How's that? That's the morning going. Great. Hello, Austin. Finally here in the studio, you know, you guys have been here for a while and I just, I just roll up and like, here I am. Yeah, you are.
Starting point is 00:00:38 You just barred your way in. I do. That's okay, though. A big win last night for Nebraska. How about it? It was good. I'm, okay, so I mean, Austin, I know, like, we're, I'm excited and intrigued to see what Nebraska can do tonight.
Starting point is 00:00:52 I like, well, I know we'll talk much more in depth about it, Bach, and not to take over here. But, like, in all seriousness, like, I'm really curious to see. I'm at a crowd that's going to be pro Kansas State for the first time tonight. Nebraska ran into some shooting issues last night, last night. And really for the first time this season, over the span of multiple minutes, maybe there were some stretches against West Georgia and FIU where it was like, maybe a little iffy. But they were still able to win a game.
Starting point is 00:01:20 It ended up being by double digits, most more than likely nine, right? We'll say that without the Jamarcus Lawrence garbage time. They play all 40 minutes. Play all 40 minutes. It's 12. But guys. I mean, like, I was impressed on Saturday with their win against Oklahoma guys.
Starting point is 00:01:34 But then last night, when Rink Mass, yeah, I had 17 points, but was not shooting it well from the perimeter. And Price Sanford was also not shooting it well from the perimeter. Just one made three for him last night. For them to still be able to win and kind of figure out how to play through the shooting woes, when that's their identity, it gave me a little confidence. I think if you look at the last two games, Nebraska's played both at neutral sites against unfamiliar opponents that presented different challenges.
Starting point is 00:02:02 You've seen Nebraska handle both ends of the adversity spectrum. It's playing from way down against Oklahoma and playing from way up against New Mexico. And the first game, Nebraska didn't have any margin for error. They essentially had to be perfect over the final 30 minutes of that game. And they weren't perfect, but they were certainly better than Oklahoma was to go from down 16 or 17 to up by 11, 12, 13, about a dozen at some point in there. That's a huge swing in a basketball game. And that is hard to pull off, and they did it.
Starting point is 00:02:30 It's also hard to pull off blowing a 20-point lead. Yeah. You know, even though we've seen back-to-back Nebraska games where that's happened, it's not necessarily easy to do. Nebraska came out so incredibly flat in the second half, but they worked their way through it. And that's the impressive part to me is that they've been able to handle multiple kinds of adversity.
Starting point is 00:02:46 You know, sometimes you think about teams as, you know, the comeback kids, the cardio kids that like to live on the edge. All they do is they walk the tight rope. They're on the high wire and they pull it out at the end. in dramatic fashion. Well, this Nebraska team had to do the exact opposite yesterday. It was good that they found a way in the middle of the second half block to kind of get back on beam, right? They didn't let New Mexico take the lead, like Oklahoma let them take the lead. Nebraska found a way to, you know, work through it in real time, didn't take a bunch of timeouts from
Starting point is 00:03:17 Fred Hoyberg to coach him through it. Shots were there, they weren't falling. Nebraska just was that old veteran team that found a way to do enough and then keep New Mexico at arm's length really for the last eight minutes or so. Yeah, it really wasn't. I think I would say an impressive win, but at the same time, I don't know if that outage beats Oklahoma, right? I think some of this has been kind of interesting
Starting point is 00:03:36 is that it's just kind of worked on the nights that they needed to against Maryland Eastern Shore. They didn't shoot well at all that night. I don't think that would have beat Oklahoma or maybe even New Mexico, but, you know, they were able to shoot 37% behind the arc last night. A lot of that had to do with Braden Frager and Conor Sision, kind of the opposite and more fragrant.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Lawrence than the Cetian but he got sucker punched early so you got to give him a break and lost part of his tooth yeah I never seen anything like that is or very rarely am I am I wrong did he get hit from behind though so what like how did he how did he lose part of his tooth well he was going for the loose ball rebound with New Mexico's big guy ran into him first tried to slow up and got you got the guy got sucker punched got yeah but guys I think one thing that really stood out to me last night and to your point bach if it's kind of just worked when they've needed it to I think that they're still working through some rotation stuff
Starting point is 00:04:30 to an extent to an extent I think though that I still feel Austin I mean one of the biggest question marks for for me is just where's Kendall Blue like I just that's a guy that has size
Starting point is 00:04:45 that you want once you get into the Big Ten and I mean he didn't play once last night he did not play a single second last night and it's not like this is a project piece that you brought in from the portal. This was somebody that you, I think, we expected to play maybe not valuable minutes, but certainly like an Aaron Eulis type of role last year. And, and not, nothing against Kale Jacobson because I think there's, there's some sort of fan connection with Kail Jacobson,
Starting point is 00:05:12 and I get that, right? I understand that. But there's a reason that they identified that they wanted to go get Kendall Blue and somebody that brought the ability that Kendall Blue had. I don't know if it's, it's just struggling to the transition to the level. I don't know what it is. I don't know if you know what it is, but I feel like there's pieces. Now, there are parts of the rotation, I think, to where they are settled. And a Braden Fragher and Connor Seagen coming off the bench provides a really, really promising jump start at times for this Nebraska team. There were moments last night where they struggled and he went to Fred, that is, went to
Starting point is 00:05:46 Frager instead of Conor's Seagen. I mean, there's a lot of trust that they're putting in this redshirt freshman already. Well, 16 second half minutes for Frager speaks volumes. Yeah. There's a lot. didn't shoot it nearly as well in the second half as he did in the first. He was that run extender. He's the guy that kept the foot on the gas in the first half. Wasn't the guy that Nebraska went to, to, you know, step on the gas again in the second half, but he did provide
Starting point is 00:06:07 that, that energy, that rebounding a plus seven for the game last night. I see, I think Nebraska's rotation is pretty well settled. I mean, game to game when guys come in might be a little bit different depending on fouls and whatnot. But against Oklahoma, Nebraska played nine guys, but really it was eight And really, it was seven. You only got two and a half minutes from Jared Garcia, the entire game there in the first half, I believe. And then you got seven and a half minutes out of Bragan Frager against Oklahoma. Other than that, it was Assygeon Jacobson and the starters. Last night against New Mexico, it was an eight-man rotation.
Starting point is 00:06:41 The starters, Jacobson, Ecegen, and Frager. I think Nebraska feels most comfortable with those guys. And they still do have, you know, a few non-cons to work through some stuff. Winthrop is not going to be easy. That's a team that pushed top 25 Arkansas to the brink. Had some extra curriculars. Indeed they did, but not Kenny Payne. Nope, Kenny Payne is he was seated.
Starting point is 00:07:00 He was not, is he the coach at Winthrop? No, no, no. Kenny Payne is an assistant in Arkansas. Okay, got you. Long time, John Calgary guy. Well, that's what I was saying. I didn't know after he got fired for going essentially winless at Louisville Bach if he was ended up being the head coach Winthrop.
Starting point is 00:07:14 Now, I interrupted you. Go ahead, though. I lost my train. I'll find it. Wait, working through it, working through it. No, I think the rotation is said with those eight guys, Winthrop is going to be a nest. I circled that a couple weeks ago as one of the games to monitor. Then you get South Carolina upstate right after Thanksgiving.
Starting point is 00:07:30 That leads you into Big Ten playing crate before your year end kind of cupcakes that Nebraska always schedules. There's not really much time for Kendall Blue to work his way into the rotation. Because if you can't handle the speed and the athleticism difference of this non-con schedule, that's not a good sign for the Big Ten play. You don't just find your ability to be physical and handle pace once you get to conference play you know it kind of feels like now we're never for for kendall blue and the fact that he's not even getting on the court at all in some of the spot minutes tells me he's not even getting in practice but he's not even playing the kale jacobson role that kale played in the early parts of last year where it was like two minutes before half you
Starting point is 00:08:09 put him in so that your your starters didn't get into foul trouble or didn't pick up a late foul he's not even in that spot it seems like jared garcia is closer to playing times than then Kendall Blue, which I mean, I think altogether, you know, maybe you had some preseason expectations for Blue. But this is what's been happening the last couple of years. You got to give a credit to Coach Hoyberg. I mean, we've had, uh, John Coleman a couple years ago. Boogie. That's right. Brought in the hell. Didn't get a ball state, right? Gavin Griffiths even last year. Yeah. Fighting to get minutes. Really at a certain point couldn't get in. College basketball Twitter has a nickname for Gavin Griffiths. Is that so? Does it? LeBron Frames.
Starting point is 00:08:47 where's he at now temple temple he had a pretty good start to the year he did i think he was he averaging like 14 i can look this up officially but at one point he was averaging double digits indeed wow that's the right level for him a hundred percent it is he found a home right now he's averaging 13 5 and 1 on 50 44 100 can we can we get a can we get an update we should just do this at some point just update all these former nebraska basketball transfers that then transferred out. Wilhelm is struggling. He is averaging 6, 4, and 2. Yeah. And where is he at now? Where is he? Like, isn't it where? Is it Throgo went? Grand Canyon. Wow. I did not know that.
Starting point is 00:09:32 He's Grand Canyon. So, so there's Wilhelm. I mean, like, I don't know how Oleg is doing at Wyoming. If he's still at Wyoming, Oleg Coonets. That's one. We probably need a Trevor Lakes update. Trevor's got to graduate. He's a, he's a, Okay, he's have graduated then. Oleg Cohenetz. Oh, that is the wrong one. Let's see here. What is Eduardo Andre still playing?
Starting point is 00:09:53 He seems. Yes, actually. I believe he was at one point. He played in the NCAA tournament last year, I believe. He was with West Virginia and Fresno is where he went afterwards. Yeah, so is he with West Virginia. He might have graduated. He might have been just out.
Starting point is 00:10:06 Oleg is at Stony Brook right now. Wow. Let's see. We are, who did you just mention? Trevor Lakes. Eduardo Andre. Oh, yeah, Eduardo Andre. Eduardo
Starting point is 00:10:17 He's got to be in year 7 or something Is wait a minute Yep he has he's used all his eligibility Got you started nine games for West Virginia last year It's actually a serviceable player Now you know who's still playing Who? Blaise Kita Is he really?
Starting point is 00:10:32 Yeah Is he at Dayton still? Western Kentucky Western Kentucky Because we did go to Dayton right Or am I thinking who Who went to Dayton Opie Topin?
Starting point is 00:10:42 O B to no no it was not Obie Toffin Malik I see it You're just like, yeah, that's it. No, no, there was somebody, there was somebody from Nebraska that went to, went to Dayton. It was another big man, big man from France. It wasn't Ivan.
Starting point is 00:10:57 It was, uh, I'm, I'm going to find this. I'm trying to think. Nebraska basketball player, I'm just going to Google transfers to Dayton. I, this time, blanking on this. Did anyone from Nebraska go to date? And, of course, of course, of, Of course, it says Dayton, Riola decommets from Nebraska is the first one. I am, I am 95% sure.
Starting point is 00:11:23 Jordy Shimanga. Thank you, Jake, that's right. Jake Sorensen. Thank you to Jake. Jordy Shimanga. It was another one of those big guys that didn't pan out. I knew it was that. Jordy had quite the crew.
Starting point is 00:11:34 He did. He did. But anyway, man, I love, I love going down the, was was Duby O'KK, a Tim Miles guy? Duby was a Tim Miles guy. Winthrop, Winthrop transfer. Indeed. Whenever Winthrop gets brought up, I always think it do be okay, K.
Starting point is 00:11:49 Gosh, that dude could jump out of the gym. He could not do much more than that. Highlight reel. I mean, some of those, some of those. He was Cohen Carr before Cohen Carr. Some of those guys from like even Tim and the transfers and stuff, some of those early day transfer, like Leslie Smith. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:02 Like I do remember those guys? Yeah. Yeah. He's part of the tournament team, absolutely. He was. He was. Okay. What do we mean when we say big part?
Starting point is 00:12:13 Are you serious? Leslie Smith? We found a Leslie Smith defender. Oh, yeah, absolutely. Back box stood up in his chair. He kind of sat up. He's like, all right, hold on. I didn't realize I'd come to the defense to Leslie Smith today.
Starting point is 00:12:25 Based on the one time I played him down at the YMCA here on this block, that guy could shoot threes and wasn't allowed to. I mean, he was doing everything when I was playing. Conspiracy. Yeah. That man. There was an untapped potential to Leslie Smith's game. At Nebraska, Leslie Smith took one three-pointer.
Starting point is 00:12:41 After shooting six of 22. in his one year at S&U. Leslie Smith scored 172 points in 32 games in his first year at Nebraska, then 53 points in 17 games in this year. Leslie Smith got on the court. I'm not sure I would go so far as to say he was vital. Who were some of those other? Maybe I'm just a hater though.
Starting point is 00:13:02 Who were some of those other transfers that Tim Miles brought in? Okay, we're talking Evan Taylor. Yes. Oh, Evan Taylor was getting. We're talking Anton Gill. Oh, oh, just the whole, the whole stretch. That was when the transfer portal was just starting out, and Andrew White got here. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:13:18 Andrew White and Anton Gill were here, and those were both Kansas guys, right? Anton Gil was Louisville. Louisville. That's right. Louisville. You had. Because then didn't, where did Anton, Anton graduated here after? Yep, he left.
Starting point is 00:13:32 You're talking about Walter Pitford. Maybe that's too, too basic. Let's see here, scrolling down through, but for freshman Bacari Evelyn. Yeah, I do remember Bacari. Was he a Nana Kenton guy or was that Fred? Nope, that was Tim. That was not. No, Nana was a freshman.
Starting point is 00:13:48 He recruited him out of high school out of Illinois, if I remember correctly, out of the Chicago suburbs. Indeed. And that was a four-star recruit, one of the first. Like even a guy, Benny Parker. Oh, Malcolm Laws is another one, yeah. That was a Florida Atlantic guy. Yep.
Starting point is 00:14:04 Benny was a Nebraska guy straight through. Nebraska, yeah, out of Kansas City. But man, it was fun. He was fun. I miss a Benny Parker. I do not. is he could not shoot is hey he couldn't you hate your head on the tournament team from all yeah thank you buck what do you what's wrong with david rivers you guys the problems
Starting point is 00:14:23 of david rivers oh could you free throws come on david rivers they just didn't give that man a chance they gave him they gave that man all the chances 107 games what what is david rivers doing now do we know this man shot 59 percent on free throws for his career i i do remember that a game. Based on the one time I played him at the Wyoming standoff. He could shoot a half-court shot.
Starting point is 00:14:48 He wasn't giving a chance. He just wasn't given up a game. Now, okay, so as we keep going farther and farther back, guys, like, there's just something nostalgic for me and for my age of people. So where the years of
Starting point is 00:15:04 Bo Spencer, Brandon Richardson, Tony McCray, Caleb Walker. Brandon, you, Bell. Brandon U. Bell. If you say the name, Andre Elmada. Andre Almeida, of course. El Grande Andre.
Starting point is 00:15:17 Even before them, Jorge Brian Diaz. Yeah. Like, I remember going to the Nebraska, Iowa State games in the Bob Devani Sports Center and watching from the wooden bleachers. Like, watching Bear Jones had a massive. Bear Jones had some massive shots against Texas in the win that they, the number one upset. That was fun.
Starting point is 00:15:41 The one that could have been for me. Gosh. Stan Hardinger. Oh, yeah. Sure. Yeah, could have kept him on campus. Two-time all-big West player at Hawaii. Here's something I didn't, I didn't even know until I just looked at him up now.
Starting point is 00:15:52 People forget about Be Rich. You remember Taryn Smith? I do. Do you know where he finished his career? I, oh, I just looked this up like a month ago. It was the most random. He was at Cincinnati, wasn't he? So, let's see, he transferred from Nebraska to Duquesne.
Starting point is 00:16:08 But his final season, he played at Yukon. whoa yeah interesting actually started 13 games there i think this was before yukin was very good that'd been kevin ollie back in 2019 yeah yeah i just yeah they were so ins and out of being good but let's see okay we got to look up this 2019 yukon team who was terran smith teammates with uh that yukon team oh this actually no this was early hurley whoa this was early dan yeah this was year one of dan hurley interesting 16 and 17 ninth in the american christian vital jalen Eltery Gilbert, Tyler Polly. Give me a, give me a, a year between 2008 and 2013.
Starting point is 00:16:52 Pick a year, Bach. 2011. Okay, 2011 Nebraska men's basketball. That's what we're going to work on. That's what we're going to work through. Because this is going to be fun. This is a fun activity here. All right.
Starting point is 00:17:05 There's a lot of names that we just mentioned. Nebraska this year in 2011, 2012. This is from a team that went 12 and 18 overall, 4 and 14 in the conference. Their roster this year was let's see, 2011, 2012.
Starting point is 00:17:23 All right. So this was Tony McCrae's senior year. There we go. David Rivers from Little Rock, Arkansas was a true freshman. Brandon Richardson was a senior. Josiah Moore. Do you guys remember Josiah Moore at all? Okay. Just barely. It was number five.
Starting point is 00:17:40 for Nebraska. Trevor Manky, who finished his career there for a while. Jordan Tyrants was there. Yeah, there we go. Christopher Neiman was a part of this team at 6-11. Jorge Brian Diaz, Beau Spencer, Dylan Talley, rest in peace. Caleb Walker,
Starting point is 00:17:57 Andre Almeida, and Mike Fox. Mike Fox proposed to his girlfriend on No Sit Sunday. That he did. That was not Mike Peltz. That's not Mike Peltz. That's not Mike Peltz. Sorry, Mike Peltz. Her, but you met.
Starting point is 00:18:10 Yeah, so anyway, people, people, I mean, those were, those were teams that I just, there's so many nostalgic pieces about the, uh, the men's basketball watching games at the divany that I do miss. I do miss it a little bit. Like Fox, pride of? I couldn't tell you. Yeah, I could tell you North Nebraska. Oh, Beatrice. Mm. I'm thinking of, uh, maybe Brett Porter. That's, you're thinking, uh, we're seeing Elkhorn South guy. No, you're thinking about, uh, Jay's Pikesowski. Elk, or Elkhorn South is Henry Burt, who's still on the team. Well, Jace also went to Elkhorn South, didn't he?
Starting point is 00:18:43 Okay. Maybe. I don't know. Or I think Johnny True Blood, obviously, was Elkhorn. Johnny Trueblood was Elkhorn South. Brett Porter. Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, there's, and I mean, there's been, there's been a lot of turmoil through
Starting point is 00:18:56 Nebraska basketball in the, in the 2010s. I was saying this to AD earlier, guys. I think we sometimes forget, like, who's on Nebraska's sideline. Yeah. Like, who the coaches. And don't put it into a percentage. of that, like, there is a, his last stop as a coach was the head coach of the Chicago Bulls. And if he was given any sort of support with Chicago, he very well could still be in the league
Starting point is 00:19:22 coaching. Maybe not with the Bulls because they, they run through and recycle coaches so often. But, I mean, there's, I, I sometimes forget as we're watching these games unfold, like, yeah, it's Fred Hoyberg on the sideline for Nebraska basketball, a place that doesn't have a rich basketball history. It's interesting. Yeah, it is. And I do, I mean, those, those bullseers were interesting to say the least.
Starting point is 00:19:46 They were. Duane Wade when he was done. Yeah, yeah. Rondo, I mean, the fights in the locker room, I'll never forgive him because Mirichich is still out of the league because of those things. Nikola! Yeah, one of my favorites.
Starting point is 00:19:57 Yes, number 44. Yeah. Screw Bobby Port is forever. No, never like that. They drafted Bobby and then they let him go in free agency. Or did they trade him to Milwaukee? I can't remember if they traded him or let him walk in free agency. I can't remember.
Starting point is 00:20:13 He was, I believe, traded. Okay, yeah, yeah. Traded to somebody else in the East. Great idea. I don't know. In division nonetheless. Yeah, it's bad. But the Bulls are good this year.
Starting point is 00:20:22 Yeah. Shout to him. Did you see, did you hear Connor Onion's call of their buzzer beater the other night? I did not. He was on the call for their buzzer beater against the Portland Trailblazers. I didn't even know he did. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:33 It's his first year doing NBA. And shout out to Connor Onion, friend of the station. A local kid. Yeah, great friend of the station. And he was, he's been calling NBA. He was on the road trip with the Bulls, this last road trip that they are on. And he had the call for the, for, what's it called? The buzzer beater, Nikola Vuccivich, who's had a pretty good year.
Starting point is 00:20:56 He was a trade piece last year. But now he's sticking around. By the way, after the text line, somebody just texting Cookie Miller, which is one of the best text ever because I love Cookie Miller. And I couldn't help but think last night because it wasn't. time he was called a thug for some of what he was doing he's a wheeze for just yeah by uh um godly for basically rustling a ball i was like well what's you think of this guy over here from new mexico cookie miller or cookie belcher cookie well both of them are fantastic i love cookie belcher's a
Starting point is 00:21:23 better player cookie miller might have been more fun for me is is cookie miller the marlin lucky of nebraska basketball you're gonna have to expand right A fan favorite just didn't necessarily pan out. Was Cookie Miller a five star? No, Cookie Miller's not a five star. Oh, he wasn't?
Starting point is 00:21:46 No. Okay. Oh, because Bryce was probably the five star. Bryce was the lone five star. Cookie Miller is like a diminutive point guard that could pass. Maybe that's a really bad comp and I just opened a box of horrible takes. Marlon lucky also probably accomplished more in Nebraska.
Starting point is 00:22:02 Okay. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Probably. Okay. So what, what is the, what is the,
Starting point is 00:22:05 who is the Marlon lucky of Nebraska? Who's the Marlon Lucky of Nebraska basketball? I don't know if there is one. That's such a hard. Is Bryce McAllen? No, because it's tough. This is thought provoking. Let's go.
Starting point is 00:22:20 So Marlon Lucky as a junior ran for five yards of pop, nine tuddies. Okay. Obviously, that 2017 was fine. Yeah. Yeah. He holds the record for receptions in a single season. I would almost go Copeland, but Nebraska didn't recruit him. Ah, great.
Starting point is 00:22:40 Because he came from Georgetown, right? Yeah. Okay. Glenn Watson wasn't a five star. It was probably was better than Marlon Lucky, I think. I think so too. I say Robey maybe. Ooh, I like that comp.
Starting point is 00:22:58 Did Isaiah Roby have like, did he ever get end of season honors? I don't think so. You never realized how good he was? Somebody talk about Stephen Bardo. Is Stephen Bardo still calling games? Oh, yeah. My final answer is going to be Isaiah Roe. I like that calm.
Starting point is 00:23:18 I didn't expect to talk about Marlon Lucky Combs, but here we are. Well, I like it. We better take a break. We're going over just thinking about the past.
