It's time to go one-on-one with D.P.
Coming at you live from the heart of Lincoln America,
a 93-7-a-ticket and the ticketfm.com.
Here is your host, Derek Pearson, brought to by Canopy Street Market.
Boom.
Tuesday, boom.
Coming at hot.
Why?
Because.
Because.
Because.
It is 11.0.2.
on a Tuesday.
51 degrees.
Wendy,
but gorgeous.
Freezing.
You can be a part of what we're doing.
4-2, 464-5-685.
The Sergeant of Hamon, Texas,
I want to be a part of what we're doing.
You're invited in.
Come on in.
Got a couple of questions for you to feed it along the way.
Want to know, can the Huskers beat Northwestern?
We'll talk about that.
We're rooting for Dodgers Blue Jays.
What's the biggest story in the National Football League?
And are you ready?
Are you ready for some NBA?
Opening night.
We had the two sweetest words in all the sports game seven last night.
And big time George Springer.
Big time George Springer.
You got to ask the Mariners.
Hey, did you not read the scouting report on the guy?
Don't pitch to him.
Walk him.
Walk him.
I tell you, walk him.
All the things we'll talk about.
You can follow on all the live video streams, Facebook, YouTube, X, Allo Channel 961.
Oh, glorious, glorious.
Hey, Bach, can you catch the two young ladies that just walked out of there?
Can you catch them real quick?
You know, there's certain things that happen along the way.
And, you know, being interactive, I know that our young ladies, we had some folks who were pre-recording shows, etc.
but I also wanted to
to bring
to bring them in.
Yeah, tell them to hurry.
Yeah, it's actually
yeah, it's, it's Kaylee and
yeah. Yeah. Come on.
Come on.
There's zero chance you're going to be in the building
and not come on the radio.
Get in front of these microphones.
Ladies, there's zero chance.
that you got zero chance.
I know you have class or practice or something.
Coach Klepper will forgive you if you said.
D.P. said, we got to come and talk.
All right.
Ladies, introduce yourselves.
I'm Haley.
And I'm Deser.
And who are you and why are you important?
We're on the bowling team.
What fantastic thing happened this weekend?
We won.
It is pretty awesome to watch the journey.
And we talk about programs, which is the culture and the boundary and the things that are kept in place.
And then we talk about teams that the individual groups have to figure out a way to make this work.
Right.
And individual personalities, different styles, coaching that Klement will get on a new tangent and go,
okay, here's the thing we're going to work on that's different.
That may or may not work.
But on a weekend where your first true challenge of the year, you face the big dogs.
of national bowling.
And you were dominant.
Well done, ladies.
Thank you.
Well done.
Okay, so here's the thing.
To watch you two elevate in the moment.
And I have to, full disclosure, like I'm on Facebook.
Okay, we had to figure out a way to broadcast Nebraska bowling better than Facebook live.
But since it's what we have, it's what we have.
So let me ask, in those moments, where you face down Jacksonville?
state, Arkansas State. You're facing the big ones. How important was it to establish
yourselves in those moments? The Husker brand is one thing. But you two had the opportunity,
responsibility, and the burden of stepping up at the biggest moments and say, you know what?
This is this year's Husker team. We're going to be the best team in the country. Start with you.
I think I just had to pull everything back to all the work that I've put in before and
going into the tournament and just trusting in that,
trusting in my process and telling myself that I know I can do that.
I put all this work in.
Define the work. Define the work. When you say the work.
Practice practicing a lot, fixing a bunch of the fundamental problems that I had
and cleaning up a bunch of areas in my game.
Mentally, working with sports psych, just stuff like that.
That part, right? The conversation that bowlers have in your own heads is often
the greatest battle you're going to face more than the mechanics is the conversation you have to
yourself.
So, what are the conversations you have with yourself before each ball?
Honestly, for me, Coach Columbus says, I'm like, cool as a cat.
I actually turn off my brain a lot of the time and I don't think.
And I'm someone like, if you see it's laughing in the pant, I most likely said something.
But that's the best part to watch is the engagement.
Listen, I think bowling does maybe the best job in all of,
collegiate sports about allowing
energy in the room and
the way y'all support each other openly
loudly consistently constantly
but you said a thing in sports
they obviously don't hurt don't think
it hurts the ball club so
I think you found some mastery
right to be able to just calm
things down when did you
in the space that you
are one identifying who
was going to be in the starting lineup
and then what the rotations were going to be
does it matter where
in the lineup you are do you have a preference or either of you have a preference about where you are um
i think there is like in a sense like this was my first time ever being set up and like in the setup
like you have to kind of you have to be on point because if you open in the night that that gives away a lot of
tens and so it was definitely a bit of an adjustment and like mentally i had to put myself in
like a higher like setting like okay like i have to be perfect like and like
Every shot.
But like prior, like, I'm pretty good with whatever because every position has, like, it impacts our game.
Because, like, you only get in the frame.
So everybody, like, you have to be on point in each frame.
Desire, what does it mean for you to be in this space and go, you know what?
I've, not only do I have to perform, you also have a name that carries some burden, some responsibility.
And this is.
volleyball is working from the place that the only acceptable finish this year is the national championship.
Is that what,
is that where bowling is?
Yes.
Yes.
Right.
That, that, and what does that mean?
Like from match to match, ball to ball, practice to practice.
How do you handle it?
I think for us, we don't really think about the end goal.
I think in the past, we always thought like, oh, it's nationalists, oh, it's nationals.
But this year, Coach Kemp, has even said, we're going to take it one tournament at a time because we need to focus on the
And if you focus on the now and get the fundamentals down now,
we won't have to worry about it when it comes to national championship.
And we can just be ourselves and bowl our game.
I think facing the top teams in the country early has some benefit.
Some folks will say build up to it.
That's not what y'all did.
Y'all went into the lion's den and got it done.
How important is this for the season to come home with the trophy?
I think it's really important.
I know it shows our team the amount of work and effort.
we put in has paid off and I think it will just motivate us to work even harder.
And like competing against those high level teams, like it's just great for our team to go
ahead and experience that now because we're going to have that all season.
You're a target now.
You're the target.
Yeah, everybody's got eyes on.
What's next for you?
Well, we leave tomorrow for another one.
Yeah.
Where to?
Where do you go?
Orlando.
Orlando.
So not bad.
Okay.
That's not a bad trip to point it into.
Nope.
Same level of talent and competition.
Yes.
And I think there's 20-something teams.
Yeah.
So it's probably one of our biggest tournaments.
That's a big one.
Okay.
So,
Hey,
Bach,
here's the thing about this young lady.
Bach does a wrestling show on Sunday night.
He does a pro wrestling show on Sunday night.
Bach.
Ask her.
Ask her who,
go-to.
Who's her Mount Rushmore of wrestling?
Come on.
Come on,
All right, who's your Mount Rushmore?
Okay, okay.
Right now, I'd have to put Jay Uso up there.
Hmm, yeep.
Yeah, exactly.
Oh, I would put Cody Rhodes out there.
Deservidly so.
Randy Orrin, but like old Randy.
That's my, that's my favorite one.
This is what I do.
This is what I do.
You two were going to bond over Randy Orton.
It was going to be absolutely nice.
necessary. Oh my gosh. I don't know. Give me one of the ladies. One of the ladies, Charlotte Flare. Yeah. Goat status. Yeah.
Easy go to. Yeah. Oh, listen. Ladies, proud of you, proud of what you do, uh, proud of your show. You guys are growing in it. I know you just
pre-recorded, but I'm proud of the fact that you, you, you share these stories with folks. Husker fans need to know who
you are and what, what you go through. Um, there'll be several conversations we have over the course
the season. We'll track you all the way and we're going to cheer loudly. So thank you.
Thank you.
Ah, yeah, it's pretty good stuff in the space. Enjoy the rest of the day. We'll see you.
Thank you. It is, uh, Bock, it's, it's like I said, the best part of having the student
athletes come in to really kind of define this process and to see them along the way,
along the way that Clempa has found the chemistry to find the quality of young lady,
those that are willing to work.
But for Nebraska bowling, for them to go and face the big dogs and literally stare down the top five,
top 10, and get two wins against most of them on a weekend and come home with the tournament,
with the trophy.
Pretty good weekend for Coach Clempa.
and the lady huskers uh drumstick how you doing brother i appreciate you on the text line uh bach
if you would please kind sir pay the bills pay the bills yeah this show sponsored by hamilton
telecommunications bringing you the latest quality technology and communication services since
2001 whether it's residential or business hamilton has the answers visit hamilton tell
dot com for more info today thank you kind sir uh j norfolk asked the question do the coaches need to
go more old school. Seems no repercussions for the mistakes. If you miss an assignment or make a mistake
that affects a team, you should run stairs or do ladder drills. I don't know. I'm a member of the
club that if a, well, first of all, mistakes are going to happen. Humanity, there's no, there's no player in
history of sports at any level to play the perfect game. Doesn't exist. Some mistakes are going to
happen. You're going to miss with pitches. You're going to miss with coaching decisions. You're going to
miss assignments, you're going to miss a block and a miss a tackle.
You're going to drop a pass.
You're going to throw an interception.
That's literally basketball.
Nobody shoots 100%.
That's just not how it works.
You rarely see zeros on the board when it comes to defensive stops and otherwise,
even in shutouts, their mistakes made and lessons learned.
Coaching has to be the lesson.
If something didn't go the way you planned it, coach it.
Coach it.
Like, and it's, you're never done coaching.
In games, you're never done coaching.
In practice, you're never done coaching.
When you're at home at night, you're not done coaching.
That's part of the deal.
And working from the punishment aspect of it,
then you get a negative vacuum and it's hard to win in that space.
Right?
Sandman asked the question, why not put Latif in when Dylan is getting killed,
even for a series or two,
put someone in that can scramble.
If scrambling is the answer.
But we didn't determine that scramble was the answer.
We have to identify what the problem was.
One, play call, scheme,
whatever personnel package was on the field.
And yeah, it's a thing you consider if there's an option.
But is Latif a better quarterback than Dillon?
If there's chaos in a meat grinder,
do you want to put your freshman quarterback in the meat grinder,
especially when the dogs are barking and the bears are eating?
That's the wrong time to put them in.
They've got the ears pin back and they're in attack mode.
I'm not sure you want to put your young guy out there to be fed to the sharks
because you had other problems, play calls, schemes, pass protection, no running game.
And you can put them out there, but you're putting them out there to run
and be physical in a space where Minnesota has,
had already set the standard that they were going to be more physical.
They would have loved the idea to put hats on.
On the young guy?
Oh, my goodness.
Eric, what's up, man?
Appreciate you for hanging out.
Ohio Husker says this,
and he said this was in the, in the, in the, in the,
in the, uh, in Nick and AD's slide.
He said, he had been open for T's, but Dylan keeps missing it.
Okay.
Um,
Sometimes people are open on purpose.
But I'm going to say that again,
and you can speak to it from a basketball standpoint.
Right?
Sometimes there's a guy who's open.
Why?
One, because it's going to be difficult to get him the ball.
Two, you're conceding something to get something.
And getting access to Dylan Raiola was more important
and putting a cap on Dane Key.
Why?
Because if you're beating up Dylan Raola,
you can't get the ball,
Dain Key.
That is a concession.
Every defensive coordinator makes a concession.
He can't cover the entire field 50-yard line to 50-yard line.
You can't do it.
Side line to side line you can't do it.
Not possible.
So you give up something to get something.
And what they got was pressure on this offense.
You put chaos on the offensive line.
You put chaos on the receivers.
You put chaos in the running game.
You know, listen, everybody wants to see the second quarterback.
That's the nature of fandom.
That's the nature of fandom.
But what fans have to realize is, hey, these coaches see these quarterbacks every day.
They know the difference in the gap and the bridge between T.J.
Chief and Dylan Rale.
And guess what?
Dylan's better.
They're different, but he's better.
Better chance to win.
You went into that game with Dylan Riala winning five or six games.
With a win Saturday, he will win,
he would make them bowl eligible with weeks to go.
Six and two answers a lot of questions.
Now, if you tell me, for whatever reason,
and you want to tell me that you fully believe this,
that Lateef would do.
Look, a different player.
But there are people that wanted to see other linemen out there.
You saw him.
How'd that go?
There are people to want to see the second and third running backs.
How'd that go?
There are people, ask the commanders,
if you want the fifth, sixth, and seventh receiver out there.
You leave people out there, and that's kind of what happens.
I hate to tell folks, but the coaching staff is there every day
at every practice for every rep, every film study, every recovery.
They know their players.
Now, they may not do a great job.
They may not have had a great game plan or great execution or great in-game adjustments.
But this team is five and two.
And most fans, in July, if you said five and two headed in Northwestern,
okay.
Pretty sad.
I mean, there are those that would not be happy about that, but I don't know.
But if I said to you in August, the Huskers will be five and two in heading into Northwestern,
what would you have said?
I'd say if that's about on pace for what we would hope could realistically happen, I suppose.
I mean, I think you would probably be saying any worse than you're a little bit worried, right?
But five and two is probably about on pace for what the expectation was unless you were hopeful for the playoff or something.
In text line, correct me from wrong, but if I said in July, the Huskers are five and two heading into Northwestern, how do you feel? Most would be satisfied.
And if we said in July that this team will be six and two headed into USC primetime game on NBC, Bach, what would you have said in July?
six and two heading into USC primetime NBC.
Again, I think that's kind of on pace.
Remember preseason, there was still the concern about November.
So they wanted to be, or Nebraska, Nebraska fans would want them to be kind of be in that,
in that situation, obviously with USC Penn State, Iowa coming up at the time we didn't know where UCLA was going to be.
That's been a ride because then that's another time we thought UCLA is going to be bad.
now we see UCLA 3 and 1 in the Big 10.
So it's been a ride.
But I think, again, I think they're on pace.
The one thing people don't like is getting their butt kicked and physically getting
their butt kicked.
And that's where I think the frustration is out of the Minnesota game.
It's not just a loss.
It's physically getting an entity.
Yeah, but it's Big Ten football.
When you get big to Big Ten, you get your butt kick.
Matter of fact, you get your butt kick when you win.
Isn't that, I mean, isn't that the identity?
in the culture of Big Ten football?
It is, but again, there's an identity
culture within Nebraska football as well
of toughness, at least not
losing. What Nebraska culture?
What Nebraska? Current Nebraska culture?
Recent Nebraska?
What are we talking? Successful Nebraska culture.
Oh, and when was that?
Years and years ago. Okay.
So what are we talking about now?
We're talking about now.
Well, the culture of Nebraska football as of late
isn't built on anything too good.
Well, here's my point.
We can bang our heads against the wall.
and you can kick your feet under your desk.
But with a win Saturday, six and two, bowl eligible,
is that a good space to be in?
Yeah.
Right?
With UCLA, Iowa, Wisconsin on the schedule.
Winnerable games, Bob?
Well, I wish Wisconsin was on the schedule, but.
Well, in my head, in my head, I need that one.
Yeah.
Well, no, here's the thing.
Here's my thought process toward it.
Northwestern, USC,
UCLA and Iowa,
four of your final five games,
they're all three and one of the Big Ten.
You're going to be favorite.
You'll be favored in three of those.
We'll see.
It depends on how things go against Northwestern.
Well, but here's the thing.
If Northwestern is important,
it's important.
Oh, yeah, very important.
It's the only game that we should be thinking about.
With an opportunity for this team and this program
and this culture to be six and two,
and bowl eligible with four games in the in the pocket right like you're beating you're going
to beat had to beat a five and two team is there no merit is there no value is no good is no
positive in coming out six and two after beating a five and two northwestern team oh yeah I mean
but I I hope people are undervaluing I think like a little bit of it was looking at northwestern
and thinking of oh you know northwestern yeah they can climb up and punch you but it's still
Northwestern. This is, this is going to be a team. I, a little bit offended by the line,
if I, if I could put it that way. Well, we've talked about the line. Here's, here's my, if I do
not teach anything, none of this is about Northwestern or USC or Iowa or UCLA or none of it.
All of this is about Nebraska, not beating Nebraska. I'm going to, I'm going to scream this from
the rooftop. If you tell me that you pay coaches,
substantial amounts of money,
experienced coaches, veteran coaches,
knowledgeable coaches
with some three, four, and five-star players on the roster,
that if you can't get them to fix the things
that were broken Friday night,
then what are you doing?
We're talking about, what, pass-protected?
We're talking about running the football,
a base-level concept in the Big Ten,
that you know the moment you, you're,
recruit somebody or sign somebody or develop somebody that the run game on the
officer side and stopping the run game on the defensive side are paramount to success
in the Big Ten football conference.
Right?
We know that.
We know that.
They know that.
So can you fix it?
I would say that's priority one.
Like let's fix the bleeding on the offensive line.
Two, fix the bleeding on the defensive line.
Right?
I said yesterday.
I need fat guy football to be popular and successful in Lincoln, Nebraska.
For one week, the big guys have to say, you know what, all you little do's, all you dancers and premium dollars, get in line, we're going to get into the fight.
Look, we went into the fight with the dancers out front.
Well, you can't make that mistake this week.
Your big guys have to get off the bus first, angry, snarling, running noses.
Red eye.
Your big guys have to get off the bus first.
That has to be the plan.
At the top of the billboard,
nobody beats up Nebraska at Nebraska.
That has to be,
all the other stuff,
you can pull in all the football quotables.
But in the end, it's football.
It's blocking, tackling, running, kicking,
throwing the football, we understand.
There's a way and has nothing to do with Minnesota.
It had nothing to do,
it has nothing to do with Northwestern.
It is.
Will the Huskers be the best version of the Huskers that they can be?
And then how you do that?
Well, start with blocking.
Start with assignment understanding.
Assignment. Start with tackling.
Those are the basics.
Those are the basics.
Nebraska wasn't good at the basics last week.
The physicality was just a pimple to a bad nutritional diet
for not having your ducks in a row.
for not wanting to fight, to not being able to help them
and put them in the right place and having all those things.
Listen, it's blocking and tackling we're talking about.
And it's got nothing to do with Northwestern.
Nothing.
They just happen to be the vehicle and the next victim.
That's it.
That's the only reason we talk about Northwestern.
I don't care what Northwestern does.
If Nebraska blocks and tackles and runs with consistency and success,
Nebraska will win the football game.
And we can say that every week for the rest of the season.
Is that fair?
It's fair.
Like we can overcomplicate it and get into all the analytics
and get into all the coach speak and get into all the stuff.
But quite frankly, no, it is about Nebraska.
And if the big guys, the whole culture of Nebraska,
the pipeline and the big guys and the Jason Peters.
And okay, then let's go back to that.
because I guarantee you those guys weren't going to get beat up.
Why?
Because they were coached well and they were super talented and disciplined.
In a fight, chaos is going to happen.
Have a plan for it.
Get back to your foundation.
Get back to your base.
That's on every offensive and defensive line that's at the code.
When chaos, friction will happen.
Get back to your base.
Bach, you start to move me.
Reset.
reset and start fighting again.
We can talk about all the backups and all the nonsense.
It's nonsense.
Block somebody, tackle somebody, and then run the dang football.
But there's a clip in the folder.
There's a clip in the folder.
All right.
When we come back, we're going to play that clip.
Ready?
I just want you to find it.
Yeah, I got it.
All right.
Bach and DP one-on-one will be right.
