Back to one-on-one with DP.
Sponsored by the Downtown Lincoln Foundation on 93-7 the ticket.
We're back here on one-on-one on 93-7.
The ticket, once again, DP out this week.
We'll see if we can get him back next week.
We're covering some from some surgery.
so hopefully he heals.
Shout out to him back at home if he's listening.
But we're here on one-on-one.
We've been talking about Nebraska basketball and Sam Orp, committing to the Huskers,
the forward from Belmont, who certainly can shoot the three.
They're also targeting now today, Boise State transfer, Drew Fielder.
He would be a center.
Sam Orm, more of a forward, four, as we're kind of talking about,
stretch four.
This would be a stretch five to a degree, though they'll feel they're not as much shooting
from beyond the arc, so you can get it done inside as well, but can shoot from beyond there.
So he's 611.
He's a center.
We'll be a senior this upcoming year.
Let Boise State in points per game, 14.7 and scored altogether, 14.7 points per game this
season, start his career at Georgetown.
Boise State was not bad this last year, 20 and 12 for what it's worth, so it would be the
leading score on a decent team.
41% three-point shooter this past season,
35% overall has in three seasons,
has shot well beyond the arc twice.
I hope that that one season wouldn't come with him to Lincoln,
but shot 55% from the floor as well.
So very efficient and a guy that can stretch it out.
So, man, you talk about if they can landfielder in ORM,
I think those would be two guys that you feel very comfortable about,
starting for Nebraska. Again, you don't know if Fielder is going to commit to the Huskers.
I'm sure with those type of numbers and what in that type of resume.
He's going to have some other teams of interest.
But he is visiting today, hopefully listening out there.
The Fielder, please come to the Oscars.
No longer do we have to beg, though, look at what the Huskers have done and look what they
could do with a player like Drew Fielder.
Absolutely. So I was going back to figure out if I got to watch Drew Fielder play in the
college basketball crown.
and the answer, unfortunately, was no, actually.
So for Senior Fielder, you mentioned spent two years at Georgetown,
and then last year at Boise State,
did not play for either team in the college basketball crown,
scrolling through just to make sure I didn't miss him.
But yeah, there was no featuring of Drew Fielder at Georgetown,
when Nebraska would have played them in the college basketball crown.
Another guy that, like you said, pretty true center.
when you look at his skill set.
Name that stands out to me, Ante Berzovich.
That's a guy that was kind of a stretchy big man,
I believe, for Pat Kelsey.
Yeah, Charleston for a couple of years earlier
in Pat Kelsey's coaching career.
That's some pretty good numbers.
I mean, you gave him, but again, Bach, it's the rebounding.
Right?
This is a guy with a 20% defensive rebounding rate,
about a 10% offensive rebounding rate.
Again, not necessarily elite numbers, but fine.
You can work with that.
You can live with that.
I think some of the worry for Husker fans would be,
well, if these guys are just hanging out on the perimeter, you know, shooting threes,
how are they going to do defensively?
Are they really going to be able to dig in and mix it up?
I think that these are guys with enough of a chip on their shoulder.
They'll be transferring, in fielder's case, back up,
and in an Orm's case up for the first time, really, to make a name for themselves.
And they played for two well-respected coaches, right?
Casey Alexander took over for a legend at Belmont
and did some really dang good work in Rick Bird.
Obviously, with Drew Fielder coming from a high major program in Georgetown and then going to play for a coach that the Fred Hoyberg respects in Leon Rice and Boise State's been good in the Mountain West for a number of years.
I'm not worried about these guys' attitude at all.
I'm not worried about them not being tough enough or being soft and floating on the perimeter.
They're good positional rebounders.
Field are probably less of a, you know, positional defender than than Orm.
Only a 2.6% block rate is a big guy and a 1% steel rate, not numbers that are going to be.
jump off the page in a good way.
But again, in Nebraska doesn't necessarily
need those numbers to be sky high, right?
Fielder, I think, would be a guy that could
capably fill the rinkmask role
on the perimeter and pick and roll defense.
Now, the voice has got to come along,
certainly if he does end up landing at Nebraska.
But that's a guy that you could see Nebraska
using it in some similar ways and shoot a 12%
assist rate. Again, not elite, but workable.
You know, not going to have maybe the natural
ball handling and passing skills that rinkmas does,
but certainly not a ball stop or black hole, you know,
chucker at that position either.
Yeah, yeah, that's what I was looking.
I mean, because every, you know,
every guy's going to have a little bit of a different skill set.
Like you mentioned, you know,
he was able to rebound a little bit more than Orm this past year.
But it doesn't look like necessarily,
unless they can turn some things around here,
like a guy you would expect to play the role on offense,
which they've kind of run the center, you know,
kind of run the offense through him at times.
at the top of the key. I don't know if he's that type of guy.
He's assist the turnover ratio certainly isn't in that in that ball field.
He had more assist than turnovers this past year.
Both the guys, the or me infielder can shoot free throws around a 70% clip.
So, you know, that kind of helps in that category as well.
So, I mean, it would be, I think he's somewhat more of a traditional big that can shoot.
But like you said, I think would help out with the rebounding.
And obviously, you know, at 611, have some length for you.
So, you know, I don't know.
Maybe they'll get him.
Maybe they won't.
They're just, again, hosting fueler.
So as opposed to Sam Orm, we can kind of get excited about and see what the next steps are for him and plug and play in our heads as least as a starter.
Fielder would be that type of guy.
Again, I think would be a little bit of a different, different stretch big, if you will, the rank mass, but still kind of in that category.
Yeah.
Again, I've said this.
I'm going to continue to say it.
over the last three post seasons, Nebraska hasn't had three identical rosters.
Nebraska is not looking for, you must fill this role.
You must have this skill set.
Fred Hoyberg said it, and I'll keep repeating it, his job is to get the most talent
and then figure out how to make it fit.
And obviously, the culture piece comes first.
Fred Hoyberg led with that as his presser all the way back on Monday, right,
as though the transfer portal was opening up.
So, yeah, what Nebraska would hypothetically get from Drew Fielder would not be one-to-one
for rink mask, right?
I think through Fielder probably has a higher scoring ceiling than Rinkmas does,
probably a little bit lower passing ceiling,
but that's not to say he can't be competent in the dribble handoffs in throwing some of the backdoor cuts,
probably not as creative, probably some more simplified basic reads.
But this is a guy you can absolutely see being a good pick and pop part,
being a good, you know, short role guy where the decisions are simplified for him to run the dribble
handoff stuff, taller and lankier, probably not quite as solid as Rinkmas was.
but not, you know, Leo Curtis level skinny necessarily.
So I think there's enough of a similarity in the skill set
and enough overlap with what Nebraska has done before
that they would have no issues,
spending a guy like that into their system.
Yeah, yeah, I completely agree.
And so, again, should be exciting.
We'll see a fielder.
It becomes part of the Huskers, much like Sam Orm has done for Nebraska.
Looking elsewhere in the transfer portal,
I want to get your thoughts on some things,
particularly Iowa basketball's Averro Fulgaris,
entering the transfer portal,
the former Horizon League player of the year at Robert Morris averaged 8.4 points per game with Iowa,
but was kind of one of the names of the tournament hit maybe among the biggest shots of the tournament.
Sorry about your Duke.
Your Duke he's there.
But the game winner against Florida.
So he's going to go down in Iowa lore.
Also flush some big dunks on Nebraska, unfortunately, and paid a big part in sending the Huskers home.
Did not score against Illinois.
He was kind of hit or miss up and down there at Iowa.
but of course, you know, with Bennett starts moving on,
maybe could have been a big time contributor there.
And what I'm a little bit frustrated with this is just that I started to dislike the guy.
And, you know, in a basketball sense,
I was looking forward to kind of having a guy that Nebraska fans just generally don't like.
And maybe that's the case.
Maybe he'll transfer somewhere else or maybe return to Iowa after all of this.
But maybe he goes to Michigan.
They like big guys.
It could be.
Michigan already did fun.
one of their big guys in Tennessee transfer
hasn't stopped them before. Yeah, you can
add more to that. But
yeah, I mean, and again,
Ben McCollum, you know, they'll do fine.
I don't think it was an integral
building block part for them.
But would have been one of their probably better players
definitely would have been among their,
he was their third leading score. So it would have been among
their leading scores coming back.

What do you make of Fulgaris and especially, you know, kind of with the
Bearcay talk, it's kind of that same discussion where he had the tattoo, right?
And Fulgaris is never going to have to buy a drink in Iowa City, as we like to say.
Or, you know, he should be kind of all in the all time legendary moments there for them.
But in modern day basketball, that that doesn't mean you're going to stay.
What are the odds that Alvaro Fulgaris ever ends up back in Iowa City again?
That's true.
From the day his moving truck or whatever leaves Iowa City,
will Iowa honor the elite eight team in five years, ten years, 25 years?
Maybe, maybe not.
Is he one of the guys that makes it back for it?
Maybe, maybe not.
Here's the thing.
I'm on board with what you were saying, you know, from the Nebraska fandom point of jumping on,
hey, I want to hate you.
Hey, let's have some vitriol.
Doesn't it make it worse that this guy, you know, kind of put Iowa on his back there
late in that tournament run, hit all those big shots?
He's like, eh, I'm too cool for this place.
Eh, I can get more someplace else.
If he was doing it for the love of the game,
he's motivated because Iowa's been so great to him and his family,
and this is his forever home.
He's going to stick around.
Well, okay, at least you're motivated by something cool.
But now, you just kick Nebraska in the nuts for the fun of it,
and you're going to walk away.
Have some respect and stick around.
That's right.
We need to get our payback at least.
Yeah.
But at least it won't be, you know,
some of those dogs are pretty rough on us.
So at least that won't happen again for that.
But yeah, a little bit, it's weird.
because you're at a standpoint where you're like want to cheer against Iowa.
And so maybe this is good for I would not to be better.
But at the same point, I want to hate Iowa and develop that rivalry, even more.
And it's going to be at an all-time high entering next year.
And it would just have a little bit extra to it if he was out there on the court.
So a little bit disappointed in that.
Elsewhere, we mentioned J.P. Estreya committing to Michigan, 611 Jr.
Average 10 in 5 for Tennessee this past year.
final's most outstanding player
Elliot Cadeau returning to Michigan
for his senior season.
Yeah, Australia, Estrella, I'm not sure.
I mean, correct Spanish
correct Spanish pronunciation would indeed
be Australia, but I'm not
sure. I think you're right. I think they do say Estrella,
but yeah, I've given up at this.
I don't actually know the young man that well.
Is the guy that I was wondering if Nebraska
might look at in the portal. Now,
again, competing with Michigan, are you going to
land the guy? Maybe, maybe not.
But I thought his skill set would
fit a lot of what Nebraska wanted to accomplish there probably is the the five man um Nebraska's
gotten guys out of that program before see Walker comma Derek as you've mentioned before but no that's
I think a a potentially scary ad for for Michigan in a good way that's a that's not a repeal
that's a reload I'm still not fully convinced of the the Elliott Cadeau breakout I wouldn't be
surprised to see a little bit of a backslide from him but I will give the young man credit and I'll give
Dusty Maine, his staff a lot of credit for actually, like, giving that guy confidence.
I don't know if the story's true.
It came from what I would consider a reputable source, but apparently Hubert Davis,
early on in Elliott Cadoe's tenure, would yell at Elliott Cadoe for shooting a three anytime
someone went under a screen on him.
Like, no, it's part of the job description.
And I have never pictured Hubert Davis as a yeller like that.
Maybe he and Cudow didn't get along, and that's part of the reason for the transfer.
But you could see Elliott Cadeau play the best basketball of his career.
you could see some of his natural skills really start to shine in a system that I don't
say they highlighted him necessarily, but they put it at the very least put him in a role to accentuate
what he does well. He was not the focal piece of that team, wasn't the headliner of that
transfer portal class like he was coming in to Carolina as a high school recruit. So I give
Dusty May and his staff a lot of credit for how they've developed a guy like Elway Cadeau made him better
and proving that they can be a destination spot for big men like Australia, Mr. JP.
Yes, they have.
And Kadoe, you know, part of that, at least back up maybe if it was Hebert Davis there.
He didn't shoot 18.9% his freshman year from Beyond the Arc.
But, you know, in that year, was only shooting about one and a half per game this past year.
I mean, he's a good enough shooter, but shot close to 38%, 37.6% shooting four threes from Beyond the Arc.
And I'm sure he did some work.
on the stroke and, you know, having different opportunities certainly helped.
But that's the value of confidence, right?
I mean, Nebraska fans can give Jared Garcia
Flack for not shooting that well all they want.
They can say, well, Raleigh Rooster was a terrible shooter.
Aaron Uylus was a terrible shooter.
Well, what Nebraska did, though, is say, if you're open,
not only do we want you to take it, we need you to take it.
For the good of the offense, Barcay-Bukengel, another example
where every time I think guys like that would shoot one, fans are like,
oh, what a wasted possession.
And, oh, it's a miracle if it went in.
But again, this is where I can go back to my Duke basketball fandom.
Duke did that same thing with Malik Brown,
but Nebraska did it.
If you're open for the good of the offense, shoot it.
Leake Brown shooting numbers weren't the prettiest.
Pat Gungba's shooting numbers weren't the prettiest,
but they're credible enough that, okay,
if the guy has to at least put a hand up and stop paying attention somewhere else,
that helps the offense.
And Malik Brown was a huge part of Duke's win on the road at Carolina two seasons ago now.
Knock down a couple big threes late in that one to keep.
Carolina at arm's distance because he was given the confidence all the way from the preseason
all the way through it wasn't just on a whim he decided to shoot them he obviously part of coaching
is getting your guys to take good shots but the other part of coaching is make sure these guys
know that you believe them you have confidence in them and just because they're not the price
sand for it of the team the Isaiah Evans of the team it's okay if you shoot when you're open to
yeah yeah and you know the spacing and garden all that it's important as you're saying to do so
to get the respect if you can,
at least knock down enough of them
that they're not leaving you out there like that.
So, yeah, big return for Michigan.
They're not going to be going anywhere.
Another name in the portal.
How about Pop Isaacs, the former Texas Tech Creighton?
And now, former Texas A&M player in the portal,
average 9.8 points per game this past season.
Somebody that's not in the portal, Tien Anthony.
Wait, wait, wait, sorry.
On the Pop Isaac's point,
shout out to John Walker,
the Omaha World Herald's Creighton guy.
Good dude. Appreciate John does some really dang good work. There have been rumblings of a potential boomerang to Creighton.
Okay. So John tweets, hello, old friend, unsure if there's mutual interest in a reunion, but Alan Huss recruited Pop Isaacs out of high school.
So maybe. Keep that in mind. And of course, he didn't play too much of Craig because he got injured right away.
Yes. So, yeah, it'd be interesting to see what he could do there.
has averaged more in his previous stops at Texas Tech and Crate and the needed Texas A&M.
So also didn't start as much there as maybe he was hoping or expected.
So, you know, that could be all part of why he's leaving.
And as I was mentioning, Kean and Anthony returning to Syracuse, not necessarily a surprise,
considering they hired his dad's old teammate Jerry McNamara to be the coach.
So that will be cool.
But he averaged eight points per game in 18.7 minutes.
It's not a very good Syracuse team.
It had some did not plays near the end of it.
Carmelo was saying it could be good for the long term with his son there.
But again, just one of my favorite teams of 2003 story of Carmelo Anthony and Jerry McNamara and Hakeemorg, leading them to that surprise championship run was a lot of fun.
Jerry McNamara was so fun.
So hopefully they can get Syracuse.
Basketball is better with Syracuse is better.
Would you agree?
No.
No.
No.
Fair enough.
Here's the thing.
You're like, you're right on broad, broad levels.
But at least you're playing man-to-man defense now.
Is Mac and Mary going to come back and reinstall the two, three?
Who's to say?
That's just one of those programs that's just always just like graded at my nerves for some reason.
Maybe it's the zone.
Maybe it's because I don't understand how they were ever able to get like that much talent up to upstate New York like that.
Beham, I thought, I mean, obviously a good coach, you know, it piled up the wins.
Is he a volume guy or an efficiency guy?
Like, why was Syracuse always best when they were, you know, a double-digit seat as opposed to a top seed?
No, I have too many bad or stressful memories of watching Syracuse basketball that I'm okay if they're nothing but mid.
But yeah, probably big picture.
I mean, between Syracuse, Georgetown.
Yeah.
One of those two should probably be decent to good every year.
My preference would probably be to have a paranoia.
back, but if it's Syracuse, well, at least you got one of the two.
Yeah, yeah, I'll take it. At least somebody out there in the big east, like, you know, the Villanova's,
the St. John's coming back is nice. So, but yeah, I will see.
I specifically for me, just because I love that run and love Jerry McNamara.
I'm more of a Syracuse fan now than I was before in last season.
