We did have this one come in, I believe, from Cubs Curries, says special teams is what I'm going to focus on. That was atrocious, in my opinion. How would you evaluate special teams now under not new coach, but new coordinator, at least

at that special teams position, Brett Meyer, how would you break down the special teams versus Ohio? Well, I've seen atrocious, and I wouldn't quite put that on that level. That was a couple of years ago. Obviously, I think the biggest mistake of the frustration was the determination by Niziah Hunter to reverse field on that return and lost all those yards. And, you know, that's just one. I mean, you've got to have a better feel for it. And it can be tough.

I get it. But he also, it's not just any reverse field. He seemingly had 10 yards of green in front of him. So it was very strange, did not set Nebraska up in great field position. But outside of that, Cochadden, you know, did what he needed to do with the PATs. And again, that can just be seen as routine. But a couple years ago, the snaps were tough. You know, it was just, you know, sometimes the holds.

So there was just problems everywhere. And in this case, he didn't have that. You know, punning looked solid, especially with both feet. You know, that could always be impressive. but in general, you know, didn't have any, any major gas on that or punt return or kick return. You know,

part return was a lot of, a lot of fair catch. And I thought that that was, um, there was one scare when they almost blocked it. Yeah. Um, then there was the one on the,

the pot return with the, it bounced like quickly right to Barney and he got hit right away. So I mean, there was, I mean, there's a few things again that they would like to, to make sure don't become too problematic. But,

um, again, compared to where Nebraska has been, in the past, I can't put that on the level of terrible. And I've said this coming into the year, you know, when you lose Mike Eckler, you know, he's just one of the best special teams coordinated across the country. And so it's not that I want them to be average, but I don't, I just don't want them to go back to being awful.

And I would say that this is closer to average. You want to get into a position where you're winning special teams and special teams is a reason why you can, you know, win the game. And so hopefully they can kind of get to that. and they probably didn't have that in this game, but it did not take away from their opportunities to win. Yeah, and that's kind of where I'm out. Like, could it be better, certainly?

Game one, are you expecting a little bit of, you know, just small areas, the same thing we kind of saw on defense, the same thing we saw on offense. Yes, you know, I'm not going to give it like an A or B. I'd say it was like a C plus. Like you did just enough to be average, where you avoided disastrous situations outside of the one. return, but other than that, you made your PATs.

I don't, we didn't even attempt a field goal all game. Yeah, no. So we didn't get to see that operation quite yet on the field. But that was about it. You know, I thought all and all, it wasn't one that would ride home about and say, wow, our special teams are great hands, but I definitely wouldn't say we're in terrible hands. Like, I just need to see a little bit more Brett Maher and how he handles in that situation.

And, you know, one thing you would like to see, we talked about, man, you look at this wide receiver court, you feel like you got a bunch of elite athletes out there. you do hope one of those guys can get comfortable being like that guy. When it's kick return, punt returns, we feel like we got a real weapon. Anytime a team has a error on either whether punt or kick return. So one of those things, like I said, we'll just have to kind of wait and see it evaluate that one as it comes along, but no disaster atrocity play. You know, the one was bad, I wouldn't call it an atrocity because we didn't fully give up,

you know, safe or anything crazy like that. It's your point, I can tell you what bad special teams look like. I mean, that's been a majority, you know, since we got rid of boat, that's been the majority of my time watching hussinger football is like boy that's just one area we're not good for whatever reason you're in you're out we've certainly taken leaps and bounds since then so hopefully that stays up and versus bowling green again another opportunity see how those position groups continue to operate with that being said we'll go ahead throw it to break uh well i'll get to one more text

they'll throw it to break we got 24 59 so special teams wasn't going to lose this game on saturday but it sure as hell wasn't going to win a game and i do 100% agree with that right like couldn't call to strength, couldn't call to weakness yet. It's just kind of there. So hopefully that evolves as the season goes on and it can become a real weapon. And I don't think one game's enough to fairly evaluate it quite yet.
