We are back here on one-on-one with Nebraska Women's Tenniscoast, Hermando, Del Mager.
I'm Jake Bokkavent. D.P. out for the day.
We have a few minutes here, and so I want to give Hermann an opportunity to kind of preview
this team as, again, first match with James Madison coming up here, January 16th.
So just over a month away, you're just telling me James Madison, a pretty good program.
What is Nebraska throwing out there this year?
as far as your roster goes.
Yeah, we're excited.
We're excited.
I think this year we're bringing a new addition in January,
and then we have eight players that were here this fall,
and we're really excited about this group.
You know, they're working hard, and they're eager.
You know, they're a very united group,
so I'm excited to just see what we bring every day, you know, to matches.
And we play a pretty good schedule this spring, you know,
Our non-conference, they will be challenged quite a bit.
I mean, it started off, I think, James Madison, the first match of the year.
They're a pretty solid team.
You know, they're a team that finishes, you know, second or third or close to winning in.
The Sunbelt, and Sanbel is a strong conference.
And, yeah, so we're excited for the challenge.
And then we're a little more on the road on non-conference this year.
We got to KU, and KU was an Encelblade team, you know, their number one was a lower American, good team.
the host case stay here
we go to Wichita
which it's another strong program and
so yeah we're excited
you know we would like to
challenge our team and non-conference
too and so we're
doing that but also hopefully prepare
us well for big 10 play
yeah it's interesting during the break and
I know it's not this way in every sport I asked you
how much say you had in the non-con
in setting that up you said you have full
controls so yeah that's very cool
is that something that you do
like one year in advance or how quickly these things come together?
Yeah, I mean, sometimes we try to do a home-on-home with quite a few teams.
You know, so if we don't, then we try to bring teams here and then we try to bring a couple
teams over and then they play us and somebody else and then we play both of those teams.
And then, yeah, I have full say on the non-conference and we try to challenge our team.
We try to play maybe similar to some big-ten schools.
We would like to see different teams that we don't see, you know, often.
So I think it's good, you know, to play all that.
And then sometimes coaches that are, you know, that we get along, you know,
and then we work well together.
So that's helpful.
And then, yeah, we try to do a home home with some of them.
You know, that's what we're doing with Kansas and Wichita.
You know, we're actually going to their place this year.
They come to us the following year.
And then we'll try to kind of keep that going.
And then we'll try to, you know, go to places where we usually don't go.
I think one match is on the schedule.
I think we're going to college of Charleston Southern.
I think in the end of February, it just kind of confirmed actually this morning on that.
I talked to the coach and, you know, trying to go play outside a match and a team that they actually,
they usually win every year to their conference pretty easily.
So I think they're going to challenge us and just being an outside match for the first time in the spring.
it will be a challenge
to get adjusted to that
so we'll go there
and try to prepare
before a big 10 play
so yeah
it's exciting
it's you know
sometimes you schedule
a couple years in advance
in a few matches
and sometimes
a year before
sometimes we go
depending how that team is doing
you know
if they're doing well or no
and then you know
you do want teams
that are kind of doing well
so it can help you
you know
and then depending on the roster
you have kind of how you want
to challenge yourself or no
so we
I usually reserve one or two open dates
to kind of see what we got
and then we go us, you know?
Does it factor in like an RPI or strength of schedule,
you know, being in the Big Ten,
I know you've got some pretty tough battles there regardless.
Absolutely.
We don't really have an RPI in tennis.
Okay.
Or we don't have kind of one of those strength of schedule rankings and all that.
But it matters to us a little bit
because we know that, hey, if those teams are going to be doing
well, you know, in their conference and they're going to be ranked higher than sometimes
maybe you do want to play them, you know, because if you beat them, then you'll help your ranking.
Okay.
So it does, you know, help us.
But also you want to balance, you know, between, you know, our big tennis is very strong,
you know, so we, you also want to schedule a few, maybe a few matches that will kind of
help your team develop that, you know, the toughness or develop, you know, like how
learning how to win or learning how to compete and, you know, all that.
So we have a good balance, you know, in non-conference between, you know, a little bit of everything.
And then once you get to the Big Ten, you know, it's tough, you know.
So it's good.
It's excited.
Well, again, the tennis and women's tennis is just over a month away.
So looking forward to the start of that.
It's been an absolute blessing here and pleasure of mind to host this hour with you.
