Starting point is 00:01:21 Thank you. You just such a pro. Look at you. I've read it a few times. Yeah. Yeah. You know. And Bach's having a good, another good hair day. I don't know. These, these, these, the deals kind of mess up my hair. I noticed when I went to the bathroom earlier. Well, you figured that.
Starting point is 00:01:39 That's why I shake. Like, I don't need, I don't need that. I don't need that drama in my life. I don't need that chaos. Special guest again Thursdays in what we're doing. Let's bring him in. He is the head coach. Huskers, women, sentence, Hermando, I go, coach.
Starting point is 00:01:54 What's good? How are you? Everything's going well. Yeah, weather, a little gray. you know typical fall day yeah but it's always a great day to be a huskers look at you look at you on point messaging tory danan is smiling somewhere he's he's like that's my guy out of a out of what you brought a special guest today please introduce yeah we did we did uh we have raya co uh here uh hi raya how are you hi i'm good how are you excited you know she's you know she's um this could be her element
Starting point is 00:02:29 here you know so i'm quite the talker you might need to mute me you know she's a junior from Dallas texas yeah we're she's great great in the team and um great personality and you know super um excited to have her here fun personality we we tend to find uh those student athletes who like to talk um again having been a retired member of that club that's how i got in this business and some 40 years later. I'm still doing it. So welcome to the party. Thank you. Thank you for having me. Again, because you showed up for Mike Smith and we greatly appreciate that. You just couldn't stay away. No, there's no need. That's why this is why it was built. To tell the stories for folks who love sports, they love the elements of sports,
Starting point is 00:03:19 the life beyond sports, all the things that are engaged. And your story, is an interesting one. Uh-oh. Well, listen, so in my previous life, I was a high school coach in the great Republic of Texas. Oh, we're in Texas. I was in the woodlands, Texas. Oh, Houston. Okay.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Yeah. And see, you have to, that's a Texan. Yeah. That will identify the bubble that is the woodlands rather than Houston. It's like if somebody's from, from Greta. and you say yeah they're like you're from lincoln no great yeah there's a there's a difference um but your family often the story for student athletes is where they come from and who they come from right and you have some pretty spectacular parents so tell the folks who your people are all right so my mom
Starting point is 00:04:21 is the director of this tennis resort in St. Croix, Virgin Islands. And my dad is a criminal defense attorney also in the Virgin Islands. And they are definitely the reason I am the way I am today. They are pretty cool people. They are very driven. And that's exactly how they ended up where they are. But they really just go after what they want. And they don't stop until they get it. the question then immediately becomes who are you more like i look like my mom and i'm definitely like my mom in i would say the positive aspects but i think i'm more like my dad with my i like to argue um definitely more like him in the maybe the more negative ways but i'm a good combination of both you don't have to take the those aspects uh you're
Starting point is 00:05:17 coach would probably call them dog tendencies. Yeah. Coach, in recruiting and deciding that she would be a great part of this program, what drew you to her? Well, I think it's, I came in, you know, my, basically after my first semester, pretty much, you know, and then I, she was transferring mid-year, and I knew she, you know, she had to see she wasn't going to be eligible, but, you know, our conversations, you know, she was a great competitor and you know somebody that i was like i was trying to kind of build the
Starting point is 00:05:52 team and somebody that i think is like you know well like around and um i just thought we're and his our team you know would make our team better you know so so i didn't really hesitate much you know and and here she is you know so she's she's been great you and i have talked about in the recruiting process whether it be transfer portal or high school that often the parents play a part like you have to meet the parents to kind of know the the young person uh when you think of families and families that you want to include in the Husker way and coach coach D's world um that seems to be what you exactly what you said you need people character integrity hard work which except is that true about her parents in the meeting
Starting point is 00:06:36 and the and the and the space that you were in yes absolutely no they're they're great and to be honest with with her you know I talked to her more and then she can meet it here before I even met and talk to the parents. My parents have, like, kind of let me. They're like, oh, it's your decision. Like, we want what's best for you. I mean, they're very honest with, like, I guess, where they wanted me to go or where they thought would be best just off of, like, what I told them, like, about,
Starting point is 00:06:59 like, Hermann and, like, what he told me about the team. But ultimately, like, they were like, well, I basically live in another country. So I didn't even know where I was going to school yet. And my mom had already moved. She was like, do I need to stay? Like, do you need a parent? I was like, no, you go. I got it.
Starting point is 00:07:15 I was like on a ski trip or something whenever I was talking I was like yeah like sure like I'm coming to Nebraska and then we were like moving out of my house and everything my mom was like it's probably a really bad time for me to leave and I was like no it's okay like I got it like I I know this is where I need to be I've asked this of coach I'll ask it of you so that choice of where you were going to attend school and then to transfer you have to you had options. Why Nebraska? I just felt like for me personally, Hermann's very process-minded like coach. And I think in the state that I was in, like in the portal, like I hadn't been, I hadn't had the best results like coming out of high school, especially whenever I'd first
Starting point is 00:08:03 committed to my previous school. And I felt like I fell out of love with tennis. But speaking with Herman, I felt that was my best chance for me to love tennis again, which is something that I needed because I thought about quitting. And then from my conversation with him, I was like, actually, no, like, maybe I should give it a shot somewhere else. And that's actually been exactly what happened because I love tennis again. And honestly, it's all thanks to Hermann. Hermann, what do you say to what's the thought process when a student athlete says,
Starting point is 00:08:33 I've fallen out of love with tennis. How do you react and respond? Yeah, I think it's a tough situation. I think you have to, you know, take it to kind of a little bit of what, read kind of what the situation they've been in it, you know, what's, you know, what it's been. I think it's like, you know, she has some great results before her senior year. So I think it's a, and then kind of like, you know, that move, you know, and then kind of like, I think that play a little bit apart and then maybe, I don't know, the pressure, maybe, you know,
Starting point is 00:09:00 going to college and then that one semester, you know, it was like, she was in a really good team and maybe didn't cook better results, but I also maybe felt the pressure and just didn't feel like the enjoyment was there or something like that. So I try to, like, you know, read it, but no over thinking, all right, you know, what is it, you know, can we do this again, you know? And I think she was motivated to do it, motivated to feel like, no, I really want it, you know, I want this. I just, you know, being in a good environment and being in a place where, you know, I feel like I could help her, you know, kind of get to that place again, you know, and I think I, you know, I mean, it's good to hear that. Yeah, he lets me be myself. I think at my previous school, like I felt like I'd like, I guess like maybe hold my personality back or I like couldn't fully be myself, but just from
Starting point is 00:09:50 my first conversation with Herman, like I just, I felt comfortable. Like I felt like I could be open and I could just like literally just be myself day in and day out and like show up to practice and I like don't have to keep my mouth shut, which maybe sometimes I should. But. Okay. So there's a lot to digest there. And I do want to, no, because in coaching, you like to say, it never put the game before the person. And so you have to honor who the individuals are. And it's accumulation of different personality types and otherwise.
Starting point is 00:10:27 And for him to, one, be aware, be present enough to go, you know what, he's different. And then to accept that and then to amplify that and celebrate it. Because he spoke about you before he, told me you were coming in he's like oh i've got one i need to go back and watch that i think that's proof i haven't been watching here i mean it's the thing that that people miss sometimes and they say well coaches coach everybody the same way no coach yeah i don't think so i think we should especially you know tennis is such an individual sport and then when they bring them
Starting point is 00:11:03 together it's like yes we have some like you know standards and expectations and you know like a team, you know, type of thing, but I think also we need to, you know, I need to be adaptable just as much as they need to adapt to us. You know, I need to adapt to them as well. I think because they're all, you know, different personalities, different motivations to a point, you know, different ways to communicate, different ways to get the point across, you know, some like a lot of information, some like less information, some like more direct information, some like, you know, a little more passive, you know. And then it's my job to get to know them and get to understand. that side of them you know and i think my goal is for them to be at their best individually and i think
Starting point is 00:11:43 that makes our team better you know because we do yeah play individual matches but then we're all combined and play as a team right so it counts as a team but you know if if i if i say hey my way or the highway type of deal and then i don't adapt to them as well then what if we only get the best out of three or four but not the rest and then we're not a strong team so it's my job i think to get you try to understand them and how can we push them to be the best they can be, but sometimes getting the point across
Starting point is 00:12:13 in slightly different ways. You mentioned the adapting and that you have to adapt to them, they have to adapt to you. I'm going to ask you both because I think the responses would be different. Coach, I'll start with you. Who has the greater bridge to adapt?
Starting point is 00:12:32 The player to you or you to the player? you know it I don't know I think it's you hope to be kind of in the middle you know like I don't want to go all the way to say hi I'm going to adapt to you it all depends when they bring and then what their strengths and weaknesses are so if some of their if I need to adapt too much to kind of maybe what their weaknesses are then then maybe we might not get the best out of them if they need to adapt you know the other way I think it's I think it's a little bit of both So I don't, you know, I adopt, I think just as much as they adapt, you know, within the parameters sort of like saying, okay, how can we get you to be the best you can be, you know,
Starting point is 00:13:11 without feeling like, all right, just because you, I don't know, you're one way, you know, we still need to kind of somehow meet in the middle. The, the, there's been a blessing of coaches. And one of my favorite coaches use this phrase, I'll meet you where you are to get you to where you're supposed to be. and that's the ultimate mission and you go as far as you have to go to take them as far as they have to go
Starting point is 00:13:37 and sometimes you want, yeah, you want that journey to be simple. Brian, adapting. So I would say for me personally I can be a little more stubborn and I think I do I do admit when I'm wrong but I think sometimes it takes me a second to get there
Starting point is 00:13:53 but I think just overall like ultimately like there's a respect thing like to like having your coach. I mean he's been coaching tennis longer than I've been alive. So he clearly like does know more than I do but I think sometimes there's more just like a stubbornness in my head but also like ultimately like you do need to respect like what your coach is like trying to do because at the end of the day he does want the best for us and it's not like he's going to try and lead us down the wrong path because I mean as much as I want to win he wants
Starting point is 00:14:20 to win more or I'd hope I want to more but he's attached to the result right so I think there's respect to maybe going further past the middle, like as the player, like to the coach, but also for me personally, I can be stubborn. And sometimes I'm like trying to get him to go that way. If that is the case, you often will find yourself in corners of space that he can't get to, around your teammates in different environments that he can't get to. And sometimes in those spaces, those conversations between leaders. Right.
Starting point is 00:14:57 really can impact. Do you find yourself speaking in his voice to try to get teammates? Or are you kind of accepting what he gives you and then leading the way you lead? I feel like I'm a pretty opinionated person whenever I have my mind set on something. That's kind of what I stick with. But like I said, like I'm not afraid to admit when I'm wrong. But I mean, I'd love to say I'd like to speak for him, but I don't want to stay here and lie to you. I'm going to go. I'm going to go 50-50. I mean, I do have my own opinions on things, but like I said, like the respect thing.
Starting point is 00:15:39 I think also it's different. Like, if we're like out of teammates' apartment, we're not sitting there talking about tennis. So like, I don't know. I'm not going to talk like Herman in that sense. I'm just going to be a parent. What are teammates talking? I know, right? You walk right into that one.
Starting point is 00:15:57 You walk right into that one. Right now, the NCAA tournament's going on for individuals. We've been talking about the upsets that's been happening. Our group chat's been going crazy for that one. During class and stuff, we'll, like, send each other funny videos for, like, sitting next to each other. We kind of just, like, mess with each other. Like, we'll, like, put a Snapchat filter on each other and just, like, send it to their group chat. And, like, we're, like, all dying laughing.
Starting point is 00:16:22 But honestly, we're probably the only ones. you think it's funny let let's go through your teammates because i'm just i'm gonna rapid fire i'm just gonna i'm gonna define something i'm ask you to name a teammate okay who's the funniest masha no no i can't say that that's it's masha she's gonna realize about this microphone yeah i know right i hope she doesn't hear that it's masha she's the funniest she's unironic wait no she's i don't know the correct unironic ironic she's just so funny and i just like don't think she means to be who's the smart in what way
Starting point is 00:16:57 book smart i don't know i don't know i don't know you're watching the birth of a radio host you're watching the actual birth of a radio host because now she's really she's going to understand this thing in a way a way wider ranging space than ever before thankfully i don't think they're watching this so i probably like could
Starting point is 00:17:22 say but i'm going to keep that one to my highest tennis IQ oh i i think emma maybe emma or conley okay um if if the alien showed up today who who do you run to first masha she's going to like say something in russian the alien's all right coach let's here we go under pressure oh ask him who's favorite is yeah i mean yeah coaches don't have favorite It depends on the day. All of them. Depends on what situation you want.
Starting point is 00:18:00 Well, in a private conversation, there are things that I would ask him about one serve for the Big Ten title. Who do you want? It's definitely not me. Right, right, right. I need one return. Just get it back and play. Or I need, you know what? I need a winner.
Starting point is 00:18:18 And look, in his head, he's, his head's. Yeah, you know, it gets spinning. Sometimes, you know, it's one of those. You're like, you see them play under pressure. You see them practice. You see them perform. And sometimes you'd be like, you know, it's true. It's like, well, it depends on the day.
Starting point is 00:18:35 It depends on the match. You know, like I would love to say, you know, we can all execute on the pressure. You know, that's the goal is to get the whole team to feel like the freedom, you know, to execute under pressure, you know, and knowing that they can rise to that standard, you know. Who's the next coach? Who's the one that when they're done with this game, they're going to coach? Ooh, that's a good one. You know, Masha actually has talked about, she's stuck about coaching.
Starting point is 00:19:03 I don't see her as a coach today. You know, but she can grow into it. I think T.C. could be a coach. Yeah. I mean, she knows tennis pretty well, too. I don't know. I mean, nobody has really said, hey, I want to be a coach. Masha, Maria, you know, she goes by Masha, you know, I mean, she's mentioned to me,
Starting point is 00:19:25 he's like, oh, I like to maybe be a coach, you know, and I, you know, you had to see it to believe her, you know. I coached over the summer. Yeah, you coached over the summer. Yeah, you mentioned you don't want to coach college. No, I don't want to coach college. But you're, you come from a coach. I know, it's just like, you know when somebody just like tells you're like your mom and you're
Starting point is 00:19:44 like, no, I'm not. That's like, I don't know. I got too much tennis in my family. that's where I want to be like my dad in that sense I want to be my dad just to be away from the thing yeah who's the best tennis player in the family me actually my brother my oldest brother played in high school he would say him but that's just totally not true it's it's me it's me there's a sibling thing that just absolutely it's forever it's eternal it crosses every line yeah I think that's fair two of my brothers one state in high school and they always try and tell me I have a state championship and you don't I said I didn't go to school that's not my fault I'm
Starting point is 00:20:26 well but you have military yeah that's true that that that counts now that's why they're the favorite over me right I'm the D1 athlete but they get to pull the military card and I just immediately out after that yeah I'll ask you a question that can either make you a lot of
Starting point is 00:20:42 Husker fans or they will just kind of look at you with the side of oh here's the the question okay i'm ready is there an oklahoma t-shirt in your luggage you know i hear no see that is the correct here no there you know but don't look at my closet back home there's a few in there but i have never once worn an oklahoma sweatshirt in the state of nebraska i will stand by that see back you see you down that firmly
Starting point is 00:21:18 into place and understanding is now there is more friction better game day experience i honestly the thing is i really haven't experienced like an oklahoma game day as a college student i grew up going to the games like my family had season tickets but like i've only really experienced like college game day here other last year i went to the oklahoma versus alabas game during Thanksgiving. I'm not going to lie. That was a pretty electric game. A little different. But I think like college wise
Starting point is 00:21:56 I really enjoyed the game days here and just like gosh it's just an amazing environment. But I haven't really experienced like a real game day in Oklahoma because I mean I was like eight. Nebraska fans will say there are no real home
Starting point is 00:22:11 they don't care. What do they do? What does Nebraska do better? I think the people here and just the community is a lot better I obviously grew up going to the campus at OU but every time I've like
Starting point is 00:22:27 just from the first time coming here is like yeah these people are a family but like whenever I'd like visit Oklahoma I'd be like okay yeah like they're sooner's whatever that is but it's like here it's like no you're a husker Bach aren't we proud of
Starting point is 00:22:42 aren't we just put that part of it we're just proud of her well done We'll go, Ramatha Margo, Huskers, Women's tennis. We'll go to break. We'll come back. We'll go up and down this roster because I want their opinions on this group. We want you to get to know this roster and these young ladies so we can get them the support that is required.
Starting point is 00:23:05 From it, you're listening to One-on-One on the Ticket. Download our app by searching 93.7, The Ticket in your app store. You're listening to One-on-One with DP on 93-7 the Ticket in the Ticketfm.com. you're listening to one on one with dp brought to you by canopy street market on 93 7 the ticket and the ticket fm.com i am still emotionally immature enough that i always mentally respond to this rejoin the johnsena rejoined just i it always makes me reset because I always want to scream at the top of my lungs what I'm not supposed to scream. So there's that.
Starting point is 00:23:57 Hermod de Magro and Reiko from Huskers of Women's Tennis. And I've said from day one in recreating what the ticket is and what we want it to be. A big part of it is giving Husker fans access to the coaches so that they have more. information and then become more emotionally invested. They know how hard you work. They know how
Starting point is 00:24:22 much you care. And it's important. And then for the student athletes to allow them, especially those that want to do this for a living or for their future, to have a place in Lincoln where that actually happens. You actually have a way to do that. So in these relationships, then you meet these incredible people. And Hermann, I, you know, I stalked him for about six months and try to finally get him to do this on a regular basis. And we said, yeah, it needs to be done because I know that Husker fans are going to enjoy you. And then you find out that there's some quality young people in the program. So we want to introduce them to that.
Starting point is 00:25:01 So you asked me a question during the break. You ask me, how do I get a radio show? Be you. Be you. If this is the thing that intrigues you, then we want you to be. amplified and elevated in Husker Nation. We want to know who you are. We want people to care.
Starting point is 00:25:21 If they know where you're from and they know what you care about, they'll follow. So ask the question one more time. Can I have a radio show? Yes. There's proof that you said yes. Trackable, verifiable, the beauty of federal radio. The FCC makes us record this stuff. And contracts happen all the time.
Starting point is 00:25:46 So this is how you do that. Oh, I can't wait. So we will make that happen as quickly as coach and mom and dad allow. My parents are going to love that. Your brother's listening. What did your brother say, Dirt? Let me read it. All right.
Starting point is 00:26:01 Christian, I really hope you're reading this right now, but you are good at every sport. You are the reason I'm the way I am. And you are undefeated in tennis. See? So your family's listening. I will say he is the most athletic one in the family. he does Spartan races like all the time he is a beast if there's anybody you want to be it's christian co have we brought have you brought him here is he yeah he's been to lincoln he came
Starting point is 00:26:26 for a match last spring it was snowing and he was like what the heck is this he lives in he he's doing green to gold for the army and at the university of tampa oh yeah good deal yeah he's a beast well if the hushkers football team wins when they win the next game, it increases the likelihood that they play their bowl game in Tampa. Really? It is a thing that could happen. Christian, if you're listening, get me a ticket. Yeah, it would be a thing that could happen.
Starting point is 00:26:57 That's awesome. It's there. Let's go up and down this roster because that's what matters and how this thing moves. First of all, when does your season officially start? So the spring season starts, I think our first match is January 16. I think we played James Madison that night, Friday night, 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. The Dukes are coming here?
Starting point is 00:27:23 Yeah, they are. Yeah, yeah. You know, I verbally committed James Madison before choosing Virginia commonal. I apologize. I didn't know that. Yeah, yeah, I was going to be a Duke. I was going to be a Duke. I was going to be a Duke. Yeah, yeah, they're coming.
Starting point is 00:27:37 So that's our first match. But we bring them in a little early before the school starts to kind of get some. It's good practices. A little mini preseason type of deal before the school starts and we cannot get going. So we start, I think, the January 5th, Monday.
Starting point is 00:27:55 We'll pass our practice already. And then, yeah, it's go. I mean, after the break, after New Year's, it feels like, you know, you blink and the season is there. So we got to come ready. So let's say there's a family of four, family of four, They're tennis fans and they want to be a part of it. Coach, let them know how much a season ticket pass to watch Husker Women's Tennis costs.
Starting point is 00:28:27 You know, unlikely it's free. Free, free admission. And we do free raffles sometimes. Free raffles. Tech TVs. Yes. Free food every now and then. You know, we have concessions there now.
Starting point is 00:28:40 Oh, yeah. Our marks so they can sell alcohol too and matches. So they'll have that. They have the concessions open, you know, during home events. And then we do some, you know, little different activities throughout the season, you know. We'll do, like, kids clinics, like after the matches and, like, give out, like, posters. And it's, like, a free kids clinic. Like, I know a couple girls.
Starting point is 00:29:02 Like, they, like, their parents came and were, like, we never even thought about playing tennis. But then after they did, like, this clinic, they're like, now we love tennis. Now we want to come to all the matches. Yeah. So, yeah, it's free admission, you know, especially when we're inside, we have a, you know, beautiful tennis facility that they can come enjoy it. You know, you can see, you know, six scores in a row and, you know, three doubles first and then six singles, you know, high energy, you know, the team is working hard.
Starting point is 00:29:30 So, you know, we're going to, you know, we're going to put a product out there that I think the Hasker fans are going to be proud of. Give the elevator pitch for why they should come and watch. Well, I think, you know, college tennis is better than what they think. You know, I think the level is pretty high. I think they compete really hard. They have high energy. They scream up and down the courts.
Starting point is 00:29:51 You know, they hassle. They, you know, they run. They, you know, they fight hard for each other. And it's a fine environment. I think it's like doubles goes first, so it goes quick, you know. So there's a lot of quick points, a lot of moving parts, you know, when you play on the core, a lot of volley volleys. And it's fun. And I think it's like sometimes whether you play recreational or USDA leagues or don't play at all,
Starting point is 00:30:15 I think it's, if you see one match on TV, a professional, sometimes when you come to college, I think the energy is just double of that, you know, entirely different energy. I feel like what people don't realize is that, like, yes, tennis is a country club sport, but college tennis isn't. Like, you can, I mean, I've had people say, like, messed up things to me before, like, on the bench or, like, behind me or, like, they'll, like, heckle you, like, or, like, all the girls are, like, screaming, like, you're screaming, come on, like, are men's team. will come to our matches and they are getting in the other girls head you can tell they want to
Starting point is 00:30:49 throw their racket up there but i feel like people just think like oh yeah tennis is quiet it's boring but no college tennis is actually quite literally the opposite and it's actually really exciting to watch i mean every point is different yeah every course every car is different you know like i think each one kind of brings different energy to as well you know and then we you know we always we talk about trying to build our identity throughout the fall with a new team you know and then, you know, we want to be a team that is tough and doesn't back down against anybody and they'll, you know, show up, they have energy and, you know, they'll be a tough team to be. Through most of the off season, and it's not really off season,
Starting point is 00:31:30 coaches, my coaching friends will yell at me and call it an improvement season, and then I have to jump back in line and go, okay, fine. But you're in the holiday season, and so there's those two pockets of disconnect. How do you stay connected? I just always try to, you know, like in the mind of like trying to get better. So we're working on individual stuff right now. They're doing a little more heavy stuff on the way room and running to kind of stay, you know, in that shape. We're not playing as many matches now, but we're working individually, whether it's points or technique.
Starting point is 00:32:05 You know, even Ray and I, we're working this morning on her backend, you know, trying to improve her back end. So we're like working on that. So making sure when we get back in competition mode, you know, and, you know, and, you know, each one kind of feels their best they can feel. Do you coach everybody's backhand the same way? Are you a two-fisted backhand? Two-hand, two-hand back-in? I mean, all the girls have two-hand back-ins, yes.
Starting point is 00:32:27 But each one kind of hits it slightly different, you know? So we try to, whether we work on technique or whether how they hit it or where they hit it, we try to work kind of where we feel like you can help them the best. Is it more preparation or finish? Both. Me is preparation. Hers is more preparation, trying to make the swing a little more compact, you know, so big.
Starting point is 00:32:53 He goes to the sky whenever I swing. You know, so trying to make a little more compact so she can absorb the power better and she can stay with it. It's my favorite word. You know, I have a few things, you know, every time we're practice and absorbing the ball, absorbing that pace and staying low to the ground, Biding it off is a good one. Biding it off.
Starting point is 00:33:14 I say that a lot. You know, it's like, yeah, I want a tough team. You know, I want a tough team. Oh, yeah. So to that toughness, I need you to take us into your mind. Okay. It's a scary place sometimes. Well, but that, that's where, that's why we want to go in there.
Starting point is 00:33:32 It is 40 love. Okay. Am I serving or am I returning? You're serving. Okay, I'm serving 40. You're up. You're up 40. 40 love.
Starting point is 00:33:42 okay no you're 40 30 oh okay and this is for the big 10 championship okay it's on your racket all right what is the conversation going on in your head before you put your toe on the arm i'm telling myself i'm going to be that guy today and i'm going to win for us that's what i kept telling myself last year i was like there was a couple matches where i always made jokes by like ending up like being the clenching match and like then it there's a couple of times where like my match was very important and i mean not that the other ones weren't but just the timing of me finishing and our uh director of ops who was our third assistant at the time she comes out to me she's like ray it's time to be that guy and in one of the matches i was that guy
Starting point is 00:34:29 in the other match i was not that guy described to me the moment where you were okay so i we were playing against Denver, and we were down to three, so you need four points. So me and Ticiana were the last matches on. I had won my first set, and then I lost the second set. And it's the third set. I think it was for all love 30. And I had like been up that entire third set. And then Mia comes over and she's like, Ray, no, it's time for you to be that guy. I was like, you know what? You're so right. I can be that guy. I was like, I can totally like do this for I had my teammates next to me cheering. I mean, obviously, like, I was internally, like, crapping my pants.
Starting point is 00:35:12 I was so nervous. But I was, like, the other girl is, too. She's probably more nervous than I am because I think, for the most part, I do a pretty good job, like, at, like, channeling my nerves and, like, putting it more into, like, competitiveness or just, like, challenging. I like a challenge. And that day, I was like, all right, the love 30 point, I go. I rip a backhand down the line.
Starting point is 00:35:36 I remember the exact moment. I was like, oh my gosh, I totally can be that guy. I was like, I am that guy, I'm about to be. So then I win that game, like, didn't lose. I actually don't think I lost a point the rest of the match because then I go, it's 5'4. I'm serving, I'm serving 40 love. I like, this is where I went wrong.
Starting point is 00:35:53 I pushed my servant. Thank goodness. Her mom is known on my court. But I pushed my servant, and then I, like, I have a forehand, like, hit in the middle of the net, and I see this girl wind up to hit a forehand. I'm like, no, she's going to miss, and I'm going to be that guy. And she did miss. And I just remember, I screamed.
Starting point is 00:36:07 so loud, I was like, somebody had it on video. I had like people like texted to me and they're like, this is a little obnoxious. I was like, yeah, but guess what? I was that guy that day. And then Ticiana got to clinch it at 3-3. Bach, we need to make sure that Raya sends you that video. So when we clip that, when we clip that, we'll get her scream. Uh-oh.
Starting point is 00:36:28 We'll get her scream. We'll take another break. When we come back, Coach, I do want to go through that moment from the coaching. what are you saying to your player or do you say anything at all and we'll get his answer and his response will sign that up and then i'm going to tease this because i want to want them to prepare next week is thanksgiving they're both going to have to describe the perfect thanksgiving plate the perfect thanksgiving plate we'll get all that when we come back to one-on-one watch live on facebook youtube or twitch you're listening to one-on-one with d p on 93-7 the
Starting point is 00:37:05 and the ticketfm.com you're listening to one-on-one with DP, brought to by Canopy Street Market on 93-7 the ticket and the ticket FM.com. Final segment before we handed over to Adam Carrecker,
Starting point is 00:37:25 the big man will come in and take us to one o'clock and then Bach in the black shirt, Hall of Famer, will take us the three. Bach, what are you all talking about today? Well, we are different. definitely getting into the Penn State game. Terrell likes to, like Thursdays. He sparks out, so he's back there. He's doing his reports.
Starting point is 00:37:41 He's figuring out what Penn State's going to bring to the table. So as closer we get to the game, the more we like to break into the opponent. He's stalking Penn State. I love it. I love the Hall of Fame or stalking. I'm excited for that game. That is spectacular. We'll get your picks before we get out of here.
Starting point is 00:37:58 We were talking about that the moment, match point, Hermann, you're, you're, you've moved to her court because you just have to. Are you the type of coach that will speak into it, or are you the kind of coach that you figure the work's already done, maybe throw a code word that will trigger something? What's your process? I mean, try to give them small, precise information. You don't want to overwhelm them too much,
Starting point is 00:38:27 where they have almost too many choices, you know, because then their minds get a little foggy, and then you kind of, like, can be undecided. have to be decisive and you just have to also trust them you know like you try to feel like hey i believe in you you can do this you know and then go do it and if you don't do it just okay live with it you know learn with it and then you know the biggest thing is knowing that you know you put the work in already and and you kind of feel like they just go you know because they work hard i think sometimes when you when you get that moment it feels like all the hard work is paying off and it almost feels like
Starting point is 00:39:01 when you don't get it in your mind you're like well that hard work didn't pay off. And it's not true all the time. Sometimes you can work really hard and don't kind of quite get that result you want it. But if you put yourself out there and you almost got it, it means that you're doing a lot of things right. So you try to take the positive out of it. You don't get it. And obviously try to enjoy if you do get it, you know. But you know, in that moment, I think it's just more trying to, my job is to try to, you know, let them know that I, you know, I trust them, let them know that I believe in them, let them know that, you know, if it's a certain play, I'll, you know,
Starting point is 00:39:35 I usually will go there and say, hey, sir, to this side and then go hit this ball right here. You know, I usually can tell them that to make them sure that they're, they don't feel like they don't know what to do out there. But I also think it's just more, more than anything, it's just, just believe in them and let them know that they can execute it under pressure. You know, they can execute it. is it is it easier to coach after a win or not a win it depends obviously it feels like when you're winning it feels like you you can build on that confidence but i try to we talk of the team all the
Starting point is 00:40:13 time i was like i don't want the confidence always come just with the wins i wanted to come from their preparation what they do daily and small little wins because i feel like with players or when athletes wait until they get the result that you can't control it for them to be confident then they might never be confident enough to get the result they want I feel like the confidence has to come before you get the result to get the result you want and all that comes from the preparation your process what you do daily you know and like little small wins out there that feels you you're prepared you know to get the result you want I feel like if you're waiting for that result to be confident then you might never get it
Starting point is 00:40:53 because result is like the last part you can control. But you can control a lot of things. Yeah, you become result oriented rather than process. And then it's hard. And it's hard because it's more pressure on yourself than need to be. And then, you know, you're focusing on the wrong things. Mark Manning says it all the time. Don't make anything bigger than it is.
Starting point is 00:41:10 Exactly. Yeah. You know, don't make it bigger. Okay. So next Thursday in what we do, Thanksgiving, and to make the perfect plate. Okay. So, Ray, we're going to ask you. Okay, okay.
Starting point is 00:41:24 Describe the perfect, your perfect Thanksgiving plate. Okay, you've got to go with mashed potatoes. That's a given. Okay. You need the butter bread. Preferably, Texas Roadhouse rolls with the cinnamon butter in a perfect world. That's what we're getting. Macaroni and cheese, but like extra cheesy.
Starting point is 00:41:43 Like, but like the, yeah, yeah. And then you have to have like maple glazed ham. But, you know, we can't leave the turkey out because like, obviously that's a Thanksgiving. Beer can chicken turkey. That's where I knew you were going to go. You're a Texan and I absolutely that. Yes. Beer can chicken turkey.
Starting point is 00:42:03 My mom used to make that every year. My Thanksgiving's going to look a little different this year. I have no idea if we're actually like doing a meal. But along with, see, I like peas and my mom always included them in Thanksgiving. I don't know if that's actually like a Thanksgiving dish. Most of the state of Nebraska. Yeah. So.
Starting point is 00:42:22 Bach, are you? Definitely that. Yeah, I love these. Yeah, but you got to put them in your mashed potatoes and then kind of mix it up. That's fair, true. But you can't put gravy on. No, I don't like gravy. Okay.
Starting point is 00:42:32 No gravy. Coach? I like the green beans, green beans casserole. I like the cream corn. Oh, yes. That's one of my favorite ones. I like the cream corn. I don't like stuffings, yes, but not as much.
Starting point is 00:42:48 And then I love obviously the turkey. I don't have ham for me. I do the prosciutto ham. but that's not for thanks even you know but i don't like the cook ham as much uh turkey for sure but not too dry it needs to be kind of can't be too dry sometimes the turkey you can get dry have you had the deep fried turkey i have yeah have you had beer can chicken turkey uh i'm sure i have before maybe it's really good but yeah there will be fire set all over the state of nebraska now people trying this without knowing how to do i guess i'll have to try the first time is never
Starting point is 00:43:19 good. Yeah. It's never I have to give it that right. Dessert of choice. Well, I'm a I'm a pie guy. I like the pies and things even. Pekan, pec, you know, however you want to say become pie. Well, you have to ask Rayna. I say pecan. I also
Starting point is 00:43:36 say caramel. Right. Is it caramel or caramel? Yeah. A pecan. I don't know. I like that one. I'd say pecan, I guess. Yes. Wait, what about, how do you say caramel? Do you say caramel? Caramel. Carmel. Carmel. I say caramel. Carmel apple. Caramel candy.
Starting point is 00:43:55 No, caramel apple. Carmel. Honestly, I've known. I think I'm confusing myself. Potato or potato. Bill a bit on the next slide. He says, yeah, he says beer, chicken, cooking is awesome. Yeah. All right. I guess I have to try it along the way. Next meal. And John and Cortland says you better have black eyes in those feet. Oh, yeah. Oh, there we go. That is certainly a southern thing. Thank you both. Thank you. Thanks for having us. And you and I have worked.
Starting point is 00:44:22 We sure do. We sure do. Can't wait. Yep, going to get in. Thank you all for hanging out. Don't go anywhere. The big guy, Adam Caricker, walks into the building. It rumbles. The walls shall rumble.
Starting point is 00:44:36 And he will take you through to one o'clock.
