Starting point is 00:00:00 You're listening to One-on-One with DP. Presented by Beatrice Bakery on 937 The Ticket and the Ticketfm.com. Welcome back to old school. Again, appreciate it. Thanks to C.J. Wilter for stopping by and sharing some insight with us. RICO, I'll ask you. What's up? what vibe did you get from CJ
Starting point is 00:00:38 relaxed right like the angst is gone like he feels like this thing like he's got some control that that answer should hopefully put a lot of Husker fans at ease or maybe not I don't know where he was just like look I don't I don't want to blow smoke up your butt
Starting point is 00:00:56 I don't want to tell you we're going to do this and do that and we're going to be great and we're going to we're going to you know be top three in the conference in three-point shooting or anything like that. Like, I just want, like, we're going to work, and we're going to do our best to win. Okay, you want to know something really, really, really gross. What?
Starting point is 00:01:15 My elbow just reset itself. Did you hear the crunch just? I heard something. I was, I thought that was my teeth grinding against each other while I was talking. No, and that's what it sounds like in your head. There's a loud pop. Does it feel better now? That pop you just heard.
Starting point is 00:01:30 I'm waiting, but you felt the pressure release. Are you? Like, I don't know if I, I don't know what I did. You know what you... You probably did what my daughter did, like, a couple of months ago where she just hyper-extended her elbow. And the bone just kind of like, it's just off-shifted. So what we should have done, well, if we would have known, is what you do is you pull it, so you straighten it out and you push.
Starting point is 00:01:54 I think it's pushed in, and then it'll pop back in, but it looks like it did it itself. Maybe that's what it just did. Just pop. Let's hope I'll see if that mass of nerve... and my neck will release and not hurt as much. But that's right. Yeah, no, it's interesting. I said that to have, to watch CJ,
Starting point is 00:02:13 and it happens with a lot of the athletes that come in, the first time they come in the station. There's a lot of angst, right? There's a lot of nervousness, that sort of thing. And then they recognize pretty quickly that we're just showcasing them as they are. And CJ early on, this thing, you know, this was pressure.
Starting point is 00:02:31 This was, that spotlight is real. but that version of CJ as he matures into this thing and to watch his growth over the course of a year pretty spectacular to watch to watch the young man become a man you could see the team
Starting point is 00:02:48 I mean with the losing it was a little harder but as the season progressed they were playing better they were getting better and then it finally clicked those last couple games of the season and you saw what the team probably envisioned themselves being the entire season
Starting point is 00:03:04 and it was a good product that they were putting out there. And I kind of wanted to ask him what it was like playing with Alonzo Verge. Well, why didn't you ask him? You guys were in a groove. Yeah, you're here. You're a contributor as well. I know. You guys were in a groove.
Starting point is 00:03:19 Have had it. You know, that's what it is. Look, I can say, just watching him grow. And most folks know that CJ's family is accomplished and his little brother is one of the best players in the country. Something, something, North Carolina, something. Pretty exceptional. Something national runner-up, something. Yeah, you know, to be a part of that and what they do.
Starting point is 00:03:43 So to watch, again, his growth is kind of the thing and his statement about Fred Hoyberg caught my attention because those, and the smile on his face. You couldn't see because of the mic was in the way. Well, we got to work on that. We don't put people behind the microphones. I tried. I tried. I tried. I think he, he.
Starting point is 00:04:04 he is more comfortable with it because he was the same over here. Well, he normally sits over here. Yeah. He normally sits over here when it's him and COVID. It's harder to finagle this one with this camera here. We'll work on that. Figure out a way. We'll work on that.
Starting point is 00:04:17 You could kind of see. You see the smile. Yeah. Yeah. The smile on his face talking about Coach Hoyberg gives me some, some elation that the direction of it. And again, we still don't know what the roster is going to look like by the time they get done. As we get those decisions, we will. will, in fact, relay them.
Starting point is 00:04:37 And I can tell you, the status and the prospect changes from week to week. Some folks, some folks were ready to come on air and talk about it, but it changes from week to week. Oh, wait, no. What I was going to do might not do. Yeah, okay. So we got this. No, okay, hold on. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:57 So we try to be respectful of the sources and we try to be respectful of the young people and the family. and let them do what they do. What we do will exist and we'll go along the way. But there are times when I just want to go, okay, announce it already. You've been sitting on this news for too long. I announce it already because it changes. We've got to remember these are 20-year-olds, right? That what they were going to do, what they want to do, the space that they're in now
Starting point is 00:05:28 is not the space they're going to be in two weeks. No. Like we forget what it was like to be 20 years old. A week, you know, like, what am I wearing today? Okay, and then five minutes later, it was like, oh, I picked the wrong outfit. So we allow student athletes to be themselves speaking of again, if you have not. Can you pull up last night, pull up the tweet from 937 the ticket about the volleyball players singing? I'd like to, once again, so we have a new show that we added.
Starting point is 00:05:56 What? People were singing? We added a new show last night. And again, if you have it on it, we keep adding to the lineup. and we got to go through the lineup over last night and then tonight as well. So folks get some understanding. But off the court with Lexi and Allie, Lexi Rodriguez and Allie Benton Horse from Husker volleyball, their first Tuesday night venture, which was exceptional because they, so we had both sets of parents on the show.
Starting point is 00:06:26 And I'll highlight that because in dealing with these young people, I always include the parents. I always communicate with the parents. So they know what we're doing. They know the parameters. They know what's going on. They have some understanding of them. So the parents called in.
Starting point is 00:06:42 We talked to Lexi's mom, dad, sis. We talked to Lexi's mom. We talked to her dad who played basketball here. Alice. Ali's dad was recruited. Was a pretty good football player, but he broke his back. but he coached you know he coached them
Starting point is 00:07:02 apparently she was a point card on her dad's basketball team that's a big point card well that's what she said she said she had pretty hand she had good handles good at she goes her mom said
Starting point is 00:07:13 the reverse layup was her jam that's a big point she said she had the handles she said that she you know she just didn't like the physicality of it to do that her mom was an actress Patrick Queen was an actress
Starting point is 00:07:27 she brought up the fact she was in this movie called Puncher with Chris Evans. And she said, you know, during the shooting, you know, she said, I had my own trailer, which is pretty cool. She goes, I only had one line, but I had my own trailer. Yeah. She said she was hanging out with Chris Evans, and security came and told her that she did not rank enough to hang out with Chris Evans.
Starting point is 00:07:47 Dang. Dang. She was like, look, I'm not trying to hit on, dude. Like, I'm just hanging out with her. Sorry, ma'am. You don't have the security clients. You don't have that kind of deal. And there's another couple of movies.
Starting point is 00:07:59 she was in and she told the stories of that. She's a dancer, you know, a ballroom dancer that type. Do you imagine not being able to be friends with somebody because you're not that important? You're not as important. Right. Not saying she's not that important, but like, they're just like, yeah, sorry, no.
Starting point is 00:08:13 No, you can't hang out with them. Like, you guys may get along and you may think you're friends, but no. No, like you can't hang out with them. So to meet the families gives you a better idea about how these young people come to be who they are and how they end up here. Of course, you know, the coaches along the way and that sort of thing. So, yeah, and Lexi played basketball. She was a shocker defense first point guard.
Starting point is 00:08:35 I don't believe you. No. My name's like a sharpshooter. Yeah, no. She was to defend first. As a matter of fact, she said she was the quarterback of the team. She'd much rather facilitate and get somebody else a shot than shoot her own. She said she didn't like shooting.
Starting point is 00:08:49 She liked defending. Like, that's what she wanted to do. So on as far from most of these shows and identifying their personalities and sharing their personalities, You find out what their musical interest is, movies that they like. And then what happens usually when you start talking about their favorite songs is they figure out that they want to sing. Rico? Oh, here we go. I'm nervous.
Starting point is 00:09:10 Here we go. Don't be. She had to stand up. Oh, my gosh. All right. You can turn that up. I feel like I'm a real artist. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:20 Right? I'm like in my. You got to hear their voices. Right? It's right here. Yeah. Just a small town. girl living in a little fast just the city boy it's just the flashlight
Starting point is 00:09:50 I'm gonna take the midnight that's good it's really good it's really good it's really good he just gave you the thumbs up man Cristiano just gave you the thumbs up he just gave you the thumbs up there now smoky room Lexi's going all out I was wondering where that one was going to go. It was that moment. I was like that note is coming. Oh, Steve Perry. Who's going to hit it?
Starting point is 00:11:14 There's one Steve Perry. Like, you understand what that is. But the fact that, and again, in allowing you to know more about who these student athletes are. Like just the personalities are involved. We understand what kind of competitor are, what kind of athlete there are. But they come from really cool families. There's always a great story behind the families. again, it's a success story
Starting point is 00:11:38 that if student athletes get to the University of Nebraska and then in the programs of note at University of Nebraska, that they've succeeded at such a high level and such a high volume that they need to be highlighted, amplified, and celebrate. And the fact that they're willing to come in and share themselves with this fan base.
Starting point is 00:12:02 That's the thing. like they put down their guard and go, you know what, I don't care. I don't need to be that proud about it. Let's have some fun. Let's have some fun. And to see, go back and find the video. The videos on YouTube, you can go find it. But to watch the joy on their faces, that's important.
Starting point is 00:12:25 That's important. And allow them to celebrate themselves. And it's good. So, yeah, it's, again, that'll be every Tuesday night from six to eight. We'll do that. It's good stuff along the way. We're going to have to challenge Kobe and CJ to. CJ said he can sing, sing.
Starting point is 00:12:43 He did. He said he can sell. I don't know. We'll find that out when he does his next show. The text says, I wonder if there's a, will there be a sing-off between them and Sunday morning pancakes? I think the sing-off would be between them and Nicolin and Kenzie.
Starting point is 00:13:02 Like, I think a Huskers karaoke night would be amazing. Huskers karaoke night, sport versus sport. Right? Who wins? You have judges, right? You have judges? Like this is, yeah, this is the thing, right? Like, you feel me now, right?
Starting point is 00:13:19 Right? And Kenzie Davis. Can the coaches be the judges? No, because we know they would be biased. Well, you can't judge your own team. Or you could have, or you could have the coaches sing. Harvel can sing. If there's any ties.
Starting point is 00:13:36 Treb breaks the time. The coaches have to sing. saying Trev gets the vote. Trev gets the vote. Like, Jalen can sing. I'm trying to think amongst the programs.
Starting point is 00:13:48 I don't know who in the football program, but I'm sure somebody can sing. My money's on Mark Whipple. Yeah, or Mickey Joseph. Yeah? Like, Mickey might be able to pop something off. Frost is a singing. Well, he gets,
Starting point is 00:14:00 I could see him breaking off some Garth. You think Frost drops his voice low? Oh, absolutely. Gets him to that. Absolutely. There's no doubt. That old school country. Text line, tell us.
Starting point is 00:14:13 Of all the coaches, who's the best singer? Who do you think is the best sing of all the coaches in the Husker program? But I think, so Kenzie Davis from gymnastics can really sing. She sang during the break, talking tens. Oh. You were like, wait a minute. Wait a minute. And then.
Starting point is 00:14:30 And then Reagan, Hensie, fingers crossed for her. She auditioned for like a solo at this big, event. Wow. She finds out tomorrow whether she got the solo. So she can sing. She can sing. She can sing.
Starting point is 00:14:48 So the gymnastics team might take it away. Kenzie, but Kenzie Knuckles did Empire, Jay-Z's Empire State of Mind. She did the rap and the song. Sing. We had that from last week. We need to pull that too. Like she did the whole rap, although she did it karaoke style
Starting point is 00:15:07 with Jay Z. in the, and Alicia Keys in the background. But she went all in. And then, of course, Nicklin sings, uh, you can't go breaking my heart. All the time in the car.
Starting point is 00:15:19 But she sings the guy part. She sings both parts. She sings both parts. She sings both parts. So I think Mark, we, we have that. We can put Mark together.
Starting point is 00:15:28 Mark can be the judge and no orchestrated this thing, right? He's the voice guy. Yeah. So we can do that. And then we can put, Mark will be our Simon Cowell.
Starting point is 00:15:34 And I think we should do that. Hey, Mark, can we do a compilation of all of their karaoke's and put them into one promo. Yeah, I can try and put that together. Yeah, like one promo of this is what we would do. And I think a Husker karaoke show or night needs to happen. Okay, but the staff's got to participate, like our daily staff.
Starting point is 00:15:56 Don't do this. Needs to participate too, right? No one wants to hear us sing. Don't do this. Well, I don't know that anybody wants to hear the O Street Boys sing either. They do. They literally just asked for the O Street Boys. They just asked for the O Street Boys.
Starting point is 00:16:07 They've got the personality. Right. What they lack in pitch. Mark. That's usually what boy vans do. Like that would be the definition of the boy band. Mark, I don't want to embarrass myself anymore than I already have. Oh, so Mark in your mind of the coaching, all the coaches at Nebraska,
Starting point is 00:16:21 who do you think would not only do it but would do it well? Well, we've seen Fred cut loose. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. But then we'd have to have it like Fred would have to be able to dance too while he did it. Sure. Sure. Right.
Starting point is 00:16:40 Fred can't dance. Fred can't dance. Harvill strikes me that he would put on a show. But he's going to bust out some country like you guys were talking about. And that just doesn't impress me as much. Because it is, yeah. It's its own thing. And it takes some talent.
Starting point is 00:16:55 But it's not at the same level as what you're telling me Kenzie Knuckles did. Right. Right. Craig, to respond to you, no. Not going to happen. He says he didn't want any more songs on the network. He will before Sports Talk. Nope.
Starting point is 00:17:15 Not going to do it. Not going to. We'll throw the break. We'll close up 101. Send you over. South Point, Wingstop, Captain's Show, and Nick with hot ones. Watch live on Facebook, YouTube, or Twitch. You're listening to one-on-one with DP on 937 the Ticket and the Ticketfm.com.
