You're listening to one-on-one with DP.
Brought to you by Beatrice Bakery.
On 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticketfm.com.
Welcome back, 93-7, The Ticket.
One-on-one, and again, you guys have been great with the text line.
424-6-4-5-6-85.
We're going to change gears.
We're going from Huskers women's basketball to wrestling.
Scholastic wrestling.
Classical.
And we brought in Father and Son,
Lincoln East.
Let's bring in Brandon and Brandon Boster.
How are you guys doing? Get up close, man.
You cited, don't be afraid.
This is, okay, let's go. Let's go.
Okay, so I love the forever title.
Like, you've gotten it early.
That state championship thing has teeth.
That you've accomplished this thing.
Everybody dreams of it, but you now know the path to it.
Right.
Of all the things that you've done in your life, what's the toughest thing that you've had to do?
In this game that is, wrestling is tough.
There's a lot of things.
Diet, it's time management, it's on-mat fatigue, it's recovery, it's all those things.
What's the toughest thing for you?
I'd say it really depends on the person, but it's just getting to start, starting to enjoy wrestling.
like enjoy the hurt enjoy the pain starting to enjoy going to practice for three hours and then
staying after for another hour running sprints or hitting the ropes or doing extra drills with
your training partner is is that a a cautious son thing or is that a branded thing uh i would
i definitely wouldn't have developed that kind of trait without my father and my coach's son thing
which is obviously.
Yeah,
that's special to me
because that's something
that I would explain to him
early on was,
was you'll know,
you'll know when you know.
You'll know when you're at your weakest moment,
when you're running those sprints,
and you have that,
that voice in your head that's like,
bro, like,
you got a choice to make, you know?
And when that changes from a choice,
choice to okay this hurts this is where i like it this is it right here okay and you turn it up a notch
right that's the moment that you know that nothing can stop you being uncomfortable being uncomfortable
exactly that's exactly the term that we use right that that you go through this thing now
how many times has your son heard the stories of your championship
Right? Like he's told it several different ways, right?
Oh, yeah.
Like, so I could, I could ask you, okay, dad, come on, coach.
Give it to me. Give me that championship moment for you, the one that stands out.
Oh, man. I don't.
Like you're in a match and you, within the match, you know, I got it.
Yeah, I think that comes at the final seconds when, you know, it,
For me, it wasn't a very close match at the end.
I was the underdog, and I like to think that I over-trained for the moment, and I was, I was
uber-focused.
I wasn't, there was, there was no thought in my head that I was about to win a state title
in the moment.
You know what I mean?
Like, it was, everything around me didn't exist.
I didn't hear the crowd.
I didn't hear the coaches.
I was focused on the task at hand.
And the, you know, you kind of, as the bell rings, so to speak, as time ticks out, that's, that's when I knew it was a done deal.
The individual that I was wrestling was an amazing wrestler, has great accolades and, you know, was favored.
and so I gave him that respect and he was a big hitter so he could he could change a match at any
second no matter how much lead I had so I was I was pretty focused to the last to the last
tick yeah who had the better championship match you or your son I mean yeah I think he had the
better story honestly I I I cherish his more than that.
I cherish mine.
That's, well, that's good parenting and good coaching, right?
That thing that, you know, it's there.
To represent Lincoln East, and my being here a couple of years,
you start to identify programs that push people in the right direction.
From a coaching standpoint, do you feel like your program is doing all the things
that you can do the right way?
Because not all programs.
There are some programs that know.
Right.
Lincoln East doing it the right way.
Absolutely, absolutely.
I mean, culture is at its utmost there.
That's first and foremost.
And the winning and the wrestling really is secondary to the culture at what's being driven by the coaches there.
So, yeah, we're pretty proud of that tradition.
We're pretty proud to be a part of that tradition.
to carry it on and and I know Brandon's in a leadership position this year and he's well before I get back
before I get back to him I want to ask you the question what what's the thing that you say most to your son
just have fun just have fun just remember to have fun um don't don't let it overcome you
uh wrestling's very much a mental sport more than it is a physical sport it's a very physical sport
Don't get me wrong.
I mean, you watch it and you see it, and that's what you see from a spectator's point of view.
But it is more a mental sport than it is a physical sport.
So just keeping that in mind and not letting it turn into something that's not fun.
Or unhealthy.
Unhealthy.
You know, and starts to feel like maybe that it's something more than just a sport, that it's more like a job.
that it's more like a job
and once it gets there
it's just no more fun
right I mean
look this thing is too hard
yeah it's too hard to not be fun
like you better enjoy the hard work
yeah you have to embrace all right Brandon
what's before the match during the match after match
we're all the product of the voices in our head
for you what's the thing that you say to yourself
before matches during matches the most
I tell myself a lot of things
There's a lot of stuff going through my head sometimes.
Well, that's wrestling.
I mean, all the wrestlers that I know have this conversation with themselves
that is different than any other sport.
Because you are, one, you have to have control of the situation.
You know that friction is coming.
And then you have to have an answer for it.
So I'm always curious about wrestlers,
especially high-level championship wrestlers.
some will say
stay here
be present
stay connected
forward
up what do you say to yourself
I just tell myself I'll be fine
just tell myself everything's going to be fine
and just dog it through
yeah I mean that's that's pretty good
now your dad says he says you're in a leadership
position
that's what rings true to me that's the thing
that that makes me lean in
so for you what defines leadership
being able to
put yourself and others in a successful position.
That is the dopest.
Brandon.
I've never heard that.
I've never heard that either.
I like that.
I love that, right?
I mean, we all like to think in some level that the people around us have a clue about
who's in charge.
But if you're working from that, first of all, the toughest level, the mental awareness,
and then you're working from this.
I feel pity for whoever you're facing this year.
They don't have a shot.
They don't have a shot.
This is fantastic.
So within that community, within the school community,
what type of things do you need to lead them on?
Like what do they need help with?
School-wise?
Yeah, in that community.
I mean, within the team, it's easy.
Within the team, it's easy.
But when you walk the halls,
you're not, you're not,
anonymous, right? Everybody knows you. And there's a target and there's, you know, so what's the thing?
You just need to include everybody. Make sure that everybody feels like they're a part of the bigger picture,
basically. Dad, you got one here. Dad, you got one. He's special. Man, he really is. That,
that's, look, I've been around a ton of athletes and not everybody gets it. And not a lot of them,
a lot of them can't deliver it. Um, I, we're going to
have this conversation again on a on a wider level because and i know you guys have you got to meet
you got to get to so let the let the folks know you there's a there's a dual meet tonight right
yeah against two doing what uh lincoln pious okay in east it'll be at lincoln pious uh believe it kicks
off at 7 p.m brandon you're wrestling what one third what do you wrestle that 126 this year is that
is that a better is that a natural thing for you is that your walker
around? Yeah, I would say I walk around less than my weight class, so I'm not having me.
Come on. That's not even fair. Really? Walking around under it. So the discipline is good.
The diet's good. Yeah. The training's good. So you don't have to adjust.
Man, look, look. This is why I want to have these conversations because people begin to identify
the folks who are doing good things for good reasons. And,
the exposure behind it is necessary.
It's absolutely necessary.
Yeah, wrestling is such a special sport.
I mean, the relationships that are formed,
it's a lifelong thing, man.
It's special.
It's a very intimate sport.
So the culture behind it,
all the little things that come out of it are pretty special.
I mean, you learn how to do a lot of really interesting things
that play into life, you know,
working hard, having your mental and physical game where it needs to be to be successful.
There's a lot of things that correlate with life in general.
Man, you guys have one heck of a building going on over there.
I've met several of the folks from Lincoln East.
Bravo.
If you guys are handling business like this, he's a Lincoln Pryce guy.
So just you understand that, yeah, you got to get it tonight.
Like he gave you, you got to get it tonight.
Listen, gentlemen, good luck tonight, but we will talk very, very, very soon.
Okay.
And me and my listeners, we will be tracking you, young sir.
We will be celebrating you.
We would cheering you along.
You are easy to cheer for.
All right.
Yeah, I dig all of that.
So we'll throw the break again.
Man, this was amazing.
And thank you guys for stopping by,
I appreciate you.
Letting me feel connected to it.
There's a lot of work to happen here in the near future.
Thank you for having us.
