Boom!
Happy Wednesday.
Great hump day.
Appreciate you guys hanging out.
We got one for you.
Nicely done, put together.
We're going to do some really cool things
here in the next 30 minutes or so.
You guys know the deal.
Hit me up, but you got to hit me with a what's up DP.
You just can't yell at me from across the room.
So you got hit me with a what's up DP.
Hit me on the text line.
424-6-4-6-85.
Start a Hammond text line.
Or you can call in the high-up.
Honda Lincoln Hotline, same number.
We're live on the video stream,
Sartor Hammond video stream.
You can follow us on Facebook, YouTube, Twitch.
This is one of those days.
We have people in the room
that you might want to see and get to know.
First off, I'm going to introduce young ladies
that are with me.
They are the newest show host on 93-7 the ticket.
They are from Huskers Gymnastics.
I want to bring in Michaela Curtis
and Kenzie Robey ladies.
Say hello.
Hi.
Well, a part of this,
So you guys got your first work last night,
and it was exceptional.
Lots of folks to talk about.
We got stuff to talk about because there were some really cool stuff there.
But in those conversations,
there are good people in Lincoln who are always looking out for the good folks
in the athletic department.
And Nick from Mucachos is one of those guys.
Captain, get in here, get close, bro.
What's up, man?
Get in here, get in here.
What I love is the thing you notice about superheroes when you flash up their bat signal,
they show up.
And I say, hey, Nick, I got.
I got two young ladies for you to meet.
And I wanted you to meet them face to face.
And, of course, you brought goodies.
And the really smells just fantastic.
And then we have another project that we're going to talk about all fair.
Okay.
But, bruh, I need you and your magic.
I'm in.
I'm in.
You know, I'm in.
Right?
Like, I just, you know, I have to say it publicly as often as I can.
When you run across the good people and the good people in Lincoln,
and brother, you are at the top.
You're on the Mount Rushmore good people in this town.
Thank you.
What you're trying to do and the way you go about it, your heart just shines all the time, bro.
It's greatly appreciated. And you are loved, and I appreciate you showing up today.
Of course. I mean, and, you know, if I can come in, we can work some NIL deals, maybe.
Yeah, yeah.
See what we could do. But, no, I mean, your heart's awesome, man. And I, however I can help, I'm always in.
So this is how we want to figure out. We need to find out from the young ladies what their taste are.
And maybe we can come up with something for them. It might be.
just coffee. It might be your
yeah, your beverages.
You got good coffees. Serial milk lattes
and Captain Crunch and
what was the other one? The Captain Crunch.
Golden Graham's Lattees, yeah. What are some
what are some
gymnastic terms? Because I'm not,
I mean, I'd be the world's first
fat gymnasts, I think.
Like, what are some good
gymnastics? No, I think you should name
whatever this thing is
fat gymnast. Like,
I think that
That should be it.
Like I think that's...
Flip, stick it.
Biff.
No, let's go through.
What can he...
What names can he use to put something together for you, young ladies, going forward?
What can we do?
Oh, goodness.
So what are you drinking now?
Don't give the company.
That's a novel.
But what's in that?
And she knows that I'm going to judge her when she is.
He already has.
He already has.
He already has.
Okay.
It's vanilla sweet cream cold brew.
There's caramel in it.
There's the pumpkin.
What is it?
Cold foam.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's on top.
I have caramel in there.
There's some cinnamon on it.
I like the idea of a coffee.
I think it'd be fun.
Move enough of them.
What's your flavor?
What do you drink first thing anymore?
I just get a coffee with cream, a little bit of vanilla, and I call it a day.
Yeah, she's simple.
We knew this.
Well, you can tell by her coffee order.
Do you see what?
I told you.
Look, Nick, I had to explain to them.
They are as complicated as their coffee order.
Like, literally people can stand behind you and judge you.
I'm sitting on this one, man.
I'm not touching that.
So what do you guys have?
Because you have several different beverages.
I love the two and one.
I think that that might be one, maybe a scarlet and cream.
Oh.
That's good.
I like that idea.
Right?
We're one, whatever, whatever beverage on one side.
Well, we might have to be careful with the wording and I don't know.
Well, you could spell it different.
Yeah.
Spell it different.
For sure, but I dig that.
That's fun.
Right?
Like, that might be.
We can do a dubo cup and that we can have like one is your favorite and one is your favorite.
And you can get the.
Yeah.
It's a.
It's a.
The tumbler.
Oh, yes.
The tumbler.
That there's your, there's your gymnast term.
There you go.
Yeah.
That works.
That's, that's.
Got it.
Like, I think that might work.
And I think so next week.
So next week at some point, let's get together again.
I'm in.
And let's bring some samples and let's figure out how to get them.
Now, what I think if we wanted to consider food,
I think tiny tacos would be fantastic.
Yeah, tacos are great.
Well, street tacos.
Right.
So what's your, what's your jam when it comes to taco?
What do you want in?
What do you want in the perfect world?
You get your own kitchen, you can make whatever taco you want.
See, I kind of like a little.
bit of spice to mine. I like a kick. We can do that. Yeah. I don't know. Um, this is the maestro. You
got them in front of you. Look, this is the time to make it work. We'll make it yours. Whatever you want.
I'm trying to think of like my Chipotle order. Like what I get on my stuff. Sorry. Sorry. That's just like
this is the last time you use that C word here in this building.
This is the last time. I don't know. I put like corn on it. I don't know if that's weird.
No, that's that weird. I don't know.
You love sour cream.
I do.
And cheese.
For me, that's a no.
It's so good.
Well, we have an avocado crema that's kind of super nice.
I don't know how to try that.
Mowing in the background.
I tell you what, why don't y'all come in for a meal?
We'll play around with some stuff and we'll come up with something fun and unique.
And I won't say the C word.
Perfect.
Ever again.
I'm sorry.
Or the S word, but I mean, we're not judging.
Right, right.
The S word is like, that's four letters.
Is there Mucacho's gear,
that would fit these young ladies.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
I'll hit up my guy,
Josh at Triple B.
We'll get some good stuff.
Yeah.
I think that needs to happen.
Right?
I'll rock it.
Right.
Yeah.
We got beanies, actually,
that are pretty awesome, too.
See, that's all there.
See, so what did you bring?
Yeah, so I've got four hatchmacks.
I've got two pork, one chicken, one brisket.
And I didn't know what the spice levels were with people.
So we left them plain.
We think they're good enough on their own.
But that meat spoke for.
like 14 to 16 hours.
I know because I slept by it in my car
the other night. But yeah, so it's all, yeah, all
slow smoke barbecue on top of Casso.
Nick, you're in the four, bro.
I love barbecue. You're in the four.
I mean, I knew he needed so. He's just looking at him
bouting back there. He's just like, wow, my mouth
is watering. Yeah, you made the four.
So true story, true story.
True story, Nick. I wanted to come in this morning
and I rolled up and then I got called and I had a meeting
an emergency meeting at 930
and I wasn't able to come in
and so I was bummed
because I wanted a breakfast burrito this morning
Oh, and he does breakfast burritos.
Even better.
We'll make it happen.
Right?
So you guys have each other's
make sure you have each other's contact information.
Yeah.
And we'll get that done.
And then tonight, I got two more for you.
Yeah.
I got Cam Chick and Bryce Matthews.
We may or may not have a deal with Cam.
Well, see, that's, you know,
that stuff.
in Flights, right? So the next thing. So you might get mentioned a few times tonight in their first show as well.
Well, we love, I mean, honestly, like, we truly love the partnership we have with Husker Athletics. So thank you guys for being willing to represent small business like us. And we love to help grow your brand however we can. So.
And you two, do you. I know, right, right, right. But your, your post-match.
Cartoos. Yeah. I love Bob. You come down, cough. Yeah.
No, if I'm being honest, like when I go home, the first place I stop, we have like a little
barbecue place.
So I'm from Georgia.
Okay.
And my mom always takes me there.
It's my favorite place.
You should go.
And when he starts smoking, you should go hang out.
Check out the, yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, you need to do that.
You need to do that.
Yeah.
Okay.
Nick, man, that's a baller move.
D.P., I appreciate you, man.
And then I'll text you later because we, like I said, we got a project.
I'm in.
It's a big hearted project, but you know what?
You got big heart, so I think you're the right person.
Well, thanks.
Having me in.
Nice to meet you all.
Appreciate you brother.
Nick, appreciate you.
Good stuff all around.
Good stuff all around.
Yeah.
I will, so ladies first, you can, what I would suggest is that you, you tell me which one you want.
Thank you, brother.
I want it all.
Well, well, I mean, the gentleman.
You only get to pick one.
No.
You can have mine, but Nick, so Nick, leave one for Nick.
How's that?
I don't know about that.
You guys, if you guys want it, you.
can have it. I won't be mad.
You will be. I saw you
drool it over there. I'm telling you, there's nothing
good. There's nothing better than
their brisket breakfast burritos.
And I,
the avocado crema,
I just, I go on. The drinks you're going to
dig. Like it's just like, they
have the, uh, the nitro cold brew.
Okay. I've heard. And that stuff is so
good. And it's so smooth. It doesn't have that
bitter taste and it's just.
See, now you got another, you got another friend in the
community. So you have to worry.
about that so you guys premiered talking tens and now that the rush has gone away right the fear and
the rush have gone away what are your thoughts you guys feel comfortable with you're good you like
what we're doing yeah i think go ahead go for it i was going to say i think it's fun because like
my mom sent me the link as you did so i was able to hear it and it was just kind of cool because
it's like um our teammates kind of we kind of kept it not a secret but like we didn't really
they say anything about it just because we were trying to figure it out.
What it was.
You didn't know what it was.
And I think just to hear people, like, be excited for us was super cool.
And my mom is like, oh, yeah, you sound so comfortable.
But, like, I honestly think this is something that I've been wanting to do for a long time.
Yeah, same thing.
I mean, my family texted me after because they were listening in live.
And they thought that we sounded good.
And I don't know.
I'm excited.
From the immediate reaction for people who didn't know you,
I can tell you what people are like, wait a minute.
I've never heard anybody explain scoring in gymnastics.
And I said, even after they explained it, I still, like, I'm like, I don't know enough about this.
So I think a part of the journey in this thing is you guys explaining, one, how complicated this is, right?
How difficult this is.
This is not, you know, for the people who say, well, I do cart rolls and backflips and think that this is similar to what you do, and it's not.
And then you've got to explain the gap between club, high school, and not only just gymnastics,
collegiate gymnastics, but Division I, Big Ten gymnastics, where it's a whole different thing.
So what's the biggest misconception about gymnasts or about gymnastics is the thing that you hear the most?
What do you hear the thing you want to correct the most?
Honestly, I think everybody, like I know she mentioned it on Monday in our show.
people always just assume that you're going to go to the Olympics no matter what like you're one of
eight gymnasts in the entire world that can represent the United States so I think that's probably
and people like kind of don't understand that after college it's very very rare for somebody
to go back to the elite route which is the Olympic route and I think that's probably I mean that's
that's a big one yeah I didn't even think of that one but for sure yeah for you I mean
this thing that you've done since you were, you know,
you first learned to walk and then you immediately did a backflip like that.
Yeah.
That's how it feels.
You know, so we talked a little about the dismount after graduation,
about what you want to do.
What do you want to do?
Like if you, in a perfect world, you see yourself two years from now.
What do you see yourself doing?
Well, I see myself in physical therapy school,
which I know is like a completely different route than one would assume because kind of like you said
like I've done gymnastics my entire life but to me it's not just like walking away from that I mean
I think long term I see myself like working with a sports team one day so that's kind of a way to like
stay engaged and like stay a part of the sports still what are you going to be doing ruling the world
from on on top of a throne that nobody else can get to maybe that's nice I don't know I don't
No, I was thinking about this the other day.
I just remember when I was younger, I would, I remember here, I'm setting the scene.
I'm like swinging on a swing.
And I was like talking to myself as if I was like a motivational speaker.
Which here I am now talking to people.
This is the thing, right?
I don't know.
I think I want to stay around gymnastics.
I think that I can't see my life without it.
So I would like to coach college would be the end goal, I think.
but I am majoring in sports meeting communication and public relations so I don't really
know what I want to do with that I mean it's kind of why not do this well I wouldn't mind
but I have like a background like journalism college so I have writing you know this is not
broadcasting I don't know yeah it may be and because you have a responsibility now and you
have power that you can reach
the next you.
Right?
So the next person who is going through the stuff you're going through, you'll be able to talk
them through it.
They will have a place to do that.
We're talking from Huskers Gymnastics, Kenzie Robey, Michaela Curtis, and I think the first
reaction that my brother, my brother listened to it, and he said, okay, so why don't
you call them the odd couple?
And I said, we can't because it's already been done.
I said, but I said, why did you say that?
And he goes, because their contrast is perfect,
that you guys have a perfect contrast in your personalities.
Well, you've got the cerebral introvert,
and you've got the genius.
I forget how to put her in her right place
because she's staring at me with those evil eyes.
But you have the ability to communicate.
So what would you say to a Husker fan
who has not yet attended a gymnastics meet since you've been here?
I would say, I mean, like, you're missing out.
Honestly, like, I think that meets are a lot of fun.
And there's, even if, like, you don't know much about gymnastics, like, still just going and watching.
It's a super fun time.
I feel like college gymnastics, like, you don't necessarily need to know every single thing about it to go and have a good time and watch.
Well, and it's also one of those things, too, that I think that when I would go to,
college meets or like if they had like an open practice or something it was very motivational for me
because it was like I didn't know what I was going to do yet I was kind of not I was still like in high
school trying to figure out where I was going to go and if I wanted to go to college and X, Y and Z and
all of that and I would go and watch these meets or practices or whatever and it would be okay I have to
get my butt in the gym and do what I know like do these things because that's where I want to be.
So I think it's one of those things that even if you have a younger girl come,
they're wanting to come into this atmosphere where they plan on being one day.
How would you describe the typical gymnast day at the University of Nebraska?
During season or not during season?
Give me both.
Give me one first.
Give me during in season first.
You want to do out of season?
Oh, in season.
In season first.
Okay.
Well, last year we had really early flights.
So we would meet, what, 4 a.m.
Yeah.
At the soccer stadium because we parked our cars there.
And we would split into two vans, drive to Omaha.
We would take out of Omaha, depending on where we were going.
We would get there.
Well, we would stretch and stuff.
Yeah, in the hotel.
Yeah, so we wouldn't be like tight.
Like in the ballroom or like a conference room or something?
Yeah.
Okay.
wherever we could kind of like run around spread out.
Okay.
Obviously last year looked a little different because of COVID.
In the past, we were able to, the night before,
sometimes we were able to go see the arena where we would be competing.
So there's that factor sometimes.
We would get dinner and then we would kind of just split into our rooms.
But a lot of the times we'll hang out with each other, which is like so fun.
I always say the best part about college for being an athlete is,
season not just because of the meets but because of the time you guys we spend with each other
on the outside of the competition floor it's like bus rides are fun because we're just
chatting away doing whatever it's just the time together is super fun um then let's say we have a what
what's a normal time six o'clock meet yeah we'll get up maybe around 10ish 10 11 like we have a
specific time when we have to go to breakfast and stuff like that and then you can kind of have time to
chill, then we get our hair done.
So we'll braid each other's hair.
Well, we have people who braid each other's hair.
You guys, okay, so that is a great pen because you guys spend, like, you are a glam sport.
Like, you are the glam sport of all glam sports.
How much of game day is strictly about the look?
It takes me like two hours to get me.
Well, it just depends because you have some people like me.
Like, I don't wear a lot of makeup on my face.
I just don't like it.
But then you have other people, like she's really good at doing her.
makeup.
Yeah, my makeup takes me probably like an hour.
Yeah, but then it's just like, 45 minutes to an hour.
Then it takes a bit to do your hair.
Like, I would say by 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how long it takes,
um, and how many braids you want.
I mean, it could be, it could vary, you know, there could be just one in the
who is, so I've noticed you have a couple of, who does the braids on the team?
Who is the team's braiding?
I can't braid.
I mean, I can braid, but not like that.
Okay.
Um, we have our senior, Onica, um, our volunteer coach.
So you have people who actually will go that route for you.
Yeah.
I remember back during our freshman year, like, we ended up making like a Google sheet
and you had to like sign up for specific times.
That way, like the person who was braiding the hair could have time to get ready themselves.
Yes.
Well, and it's hard because you're braiding 18 people's hair.
Yeah.
And a lot of times grading hair that's not easily braided.
Yeah.
I mean when you have this much.
Yeah.
So they'll do it like sometimes the night before.
If people are okay, like sleeping in it.
other than that.
And then like we get to the arena.
We warm up.
Go in the back, you change and then you compete.
Does it matter what venue, what the venue, the setup of the venue?
Like, do you ever walk into a place that gets you more hype than another one?
Yeah.
I think so.
I think a big thing too is like the equipment sometimes, just depending on the arena as well.
Are there programs that always have better equipment or worse equipment?
I think it just depends.
Like we are known for like our floor exercise.
It's, I would say our floor.
Somebody told us, yeah, somebody told us that we have one of the best floors in NCAA.
And is that best defined as bouncy?
Yes.
Or some people would like firm so that when they stick, they stick.
I don't know if anybody wants a firm floor.
Nobody wants it firm.
I mean, it's an ankle stinger sometimes.
Yeah.
So it kind of depends.
Because like if you have a really bouncy floor, you kind of have to, okay.
So if you have a bouncy floor that's like on the floor.
it's easier to figure out.
But if you're on podium,
so if it's lifted up,
you have to kind of figure out your steps
because when it's lifted,
it like...
It just gives you extra, I guess.
Is there anybody who reaches this level?
Are they ever healthy?
100% healthy.
So you've actually...
Don't, I see, you shouldn't just ignored me.
I'm sorry.
Knock on wood somewhere.
Like, we've got to find,
because I don't want that.
Literally.
don't want that on you.
I mean,
why do you think I don't touch the crutches?
You've had a few things here and there.
Yeah.
Nothing like,
no,
um,
I have like shin splints.
You know,
it's about it.
But you're the solid one.
What do you mean?
You're the solid performer.
Like you're the rock solid.
Hey,
I,
I crushed this stuff.
I know,
but I just need to be wrapped in bubble wrap
the entire time.
Like,
I mean,
sometimes it's hard for me to even make it
through the entire season,
just because,
of how many issues I end up having.
Have you made it through an entire season here at Nebraska?
I did last year, but I also had a knee thing going on throughout, like, the end of season.
So do you ever step down from a meat because of an injury?
Yeah.
I know that some people are really possessive about it.
Like, no, these are the only meats I get, so I need to be in all of them.
I just know, like, I'd rather be smart about it.
I mean, if it's a meat that I definitely need to step in and, like,
get my job done, then I will. But if it's kind of a point during season where it's smarter to
take a step back, then I'll definitely do that. So you guys are how far away are you from meet one?
January 7th, Iowa State is our first meet. We're at Iowa State, yeah. Okay. And the-
about a month almost. Are you fully in like regular practice mode now? Are your schedule is pretty
much now what you're going to do for the next several months? Yeah. Pretty much. Like we're in routine
shape, just getting ready for, yeah, the next inner squad and then the first meet.
When's the inner squad? December 20th. Is that, is that the seating for, for the meets?
When does that happen for you guys? When do you know who's going to be in the night before?
Really? You see. Oh, yeah. I mean, you kind of have an idea because we have like a whiteboard and we have
magnets. It has our names on it. And you have number one through, how many people? 17, 18 we have
on our team. And so you have a gist. You have an idea, but they don't confirm it. Hey, Roby, you're
going to be, sorry, I call her Roby. We have two, we have two Kinsey's on the team. So we go last
name basis. So it, like, I don't know, we'll be on vault. And it'll be like person one, person two,
Roby, you're three, person four, person five, Michaela, you're six. And then you have a seventh person
which is like um do alternatives travel yes whole team travels oh so the whole team travels
no matter what yeah i think so from from what i understand yeah wow okay i'm not sure every sport
does that no but we don't we don't really have that large of a team yeah yeah in that sense okay so
give me the give me the game day diet give me the nutrition the game day nutrition do you want
the home version or you want to i want whatever version
version you want to share.
Well, it just depends because if we're away, we get food.
Like, I mean, we get to choose, but if we're here, it's kind of like...
You just go away.
I would say, like, when we're traveling, I mean, breakfast is normally at the hotel.
There's, like, whatever, a normal hotel breakfast, eggs, toast.
We get coffee.
I know that's the thing that makes all of this work is coffee.
I'm figuring this out pretty early.
And then for lunch, I feel like they normally just do, like, sandwiches.
Yeah, we'll do fruit, yogurt, stuff like that.
And then while we're warming up at the meat,
so back in our locker room, we'll always have, like, different snacks.
We always have, like, peanut butter and jelly and stuff like that.
Yeah, and our nutritionists, like, they send us with snack bags.
Okay, so I have to tell you this thing about Nick.
Nick likes to put his peanut butter and jelly on hamburger buns.
Is that weird or not?
That's right.
We have to clarify.
I got to explain.
Is that weird or not?
No, no, let them tell.
Okay.
Go ahead and decide and then I can explain and you guys might be able to wait with me.
But see, I don't know if I'm going to accept your explanation because that's a little weird.
Yeah.
No, okay, so can I explain?
It's called a hamburger bun for a reason.
So I make hamburgers.
I grill hamburgers and then I have leftover buns because I obviously I don't eat eight hamburgers.
So as a college student like y'all selves, I do not just want the buns to go to waste.
So I just eat a couple of hamburger p.B and Js on hamburger buns.
That's not questionable.
Like, like it's not even a thing where it's like,
Like, I want to make it very clear.
I've noticed that it makes it sound like I live paycheck to paycheck, which I do not.
I want to make that very clear.
I want to make that very clear.
Yeah, Rico's just good.
Yeah, but I just don't want my hamburger buns to go to waste.
Oh, here we go.
Yep.
Yeah.
This is how we get out.
You good, bro?
Yeah.
We're fine.
You sure?
We all fine.
You sure?
You sound like you're struggling.
Yeah, well, I got a little struggle meal.
Yeah, okay.
I just need this.
Peanut butter and jelly on hamburger buns.
It's not struggle me.
I just need it to know.
He just sits there and he's like,
I don't want to waste the bread.
I'm like, brother, hamburger buns.
I'll do that.
Just throw the bread.
