You're listening to One-on-One with D.P.
Brought to you by Beatrice Bakery.
On 93-7 The Ticket and The Ticket FM.com.
It's able to throw it down.
If he's one thing, he is very tough.
Revers and draws the foul.
Grasco wants to do is get out and transition.
They'll do it here again.
Look out.
McGowan's got it.
And a good job by McGowan's of maintaining verticality.
Really good job.
Defensive.
Oh, my goodness.
Trey McGowan's exploding to the rim to bring the Huskers within two.
Let's bring him in.
Let's bring in the captain.
We're going to call him.
He needs a superhero name now.
We need to call him like Captain Scooter or something because
dude rode heroic.
He posseed up on a scooter and went to get his dudes like out of battle.
Let's bring in the captain, Trey McGowan.
Captain, how are you doing today, brother?
I'm good.
How about you?
I'm good.
I'm good.
Just, you know, I appreciate you stepping up, right?
Because that doesn't always happen.
First of all, let's get to the real important stuff.
How's the wheel?
How you doing?
Doing good.
Today was my second day in water.
I went to the doctor Friday before we left.
It was Indiana.
So they said I can start putting 50% body weight.
I had a pool workout today.
That went well.
and then I'll be able to, I can put a shoe on, I think, I'll be able to put a shoe on for Atlanta,
and then next week I'll be able to put a hundred-difficit body weight, like, walking and stuff.
And I have two months left because you get ready for a hundred days.
So two weeks in basic, in base level recovery, and then the real work starts, right?
Right.
Okay.
So, so we understand.
Is there a target date in your mind where you think you can get back and help the squad?
We're looking at either January 5th or January 8.
Just all the tend to be.
Obviously, the third game I won't pay much minutes and then they'll rank it up going forward.
So the real question is, how are you doing?
Because the opportunity to play with your brother, like that was a part of the excitement and the joy.
And then having to go through this.
Nobody needs to go through this.
but how are you?
Because this was a big year for you.
This was a big time in your life.
You get to play with your brother
and you get to be in a position of leadership here at Nebraska.
How are you the human being doing?
The human being, I'm actually good in good spirit.
I mean, when it first happened,
it was just the timetable of it would either be six weeks or six months,
but that was really the most stressful part.
But once they said,
for eight weeks.
I was just, I just, my main focus is rehab just so I can come back stronger.
And, I mean, just the support system around me.
I feel like that's the biggest thing that we have, man.
Also, just, like, just realizing it's okay to be alone.
I mean, a quote I've, like, been going by and start.
I can't shine without darkness.
Right.
I mean, just staying locked in.
And then trying to get the guys at.
I would imagine from a leadership position, it's difficult because there's focus one.
There's your little brother, right?
That's a gift from God, and that's you looking out for him in whatever way, every way possible.
So what's that been like between you two to have to go through this thing with your injury
and then the playing without you and then the way the season's gone so far?
honestly I mean I think it's made me a better leader because just being able to see everything from the sideline a lot different than just seeing on the court maybe like you can see just a couple people on the court I mean if you're out of the court you can't see everyone at once you can see like probably like six people I would say max on your team and the other team so just being able to sit back and really
just watch, see everyone on the court.
And then just really just, I've just been watching a whole lot of basketball.
And I'm just trying to pick the coach's brain whenever I can.
And just trying to really learn the game.
So, I mean, I think it's helped out a lot.
We're talking to Trey McGowan.
And Trey, this big brother thing, right, that all of the light is being shown brightly on your little brother.
Right?
Like, there's no way for him to avoid this.
So as he goes on the roller coaster ride that is a Big Ten basketball season, how's he doing?
I mean, the thing about Bryce, Bryce, he has a confidence that not many, like, young kids have.
And I just feel like just me being here, just knowing how I started on my freshman year,
had a real good freshman year and then went through slumps and just not having anyone there
who had kind of been there to kind of help me through the slumps.
That was kind of tough for me.
I definitely struggled.
I mean, just being experiencing not quite to the extent that he's experiencing,
but kind of going to do success early, just having someone there who you know,
just good or bad, he's going to tell you what's right.
much wrong, what you should be better here.
Just having some of them who's just honest with you.
Just having someone who's honest with you and just really loves it.
Yeah, that genuine part.
It had to be pretty amazing to have your dad posse up and show up, right?
Your dad got to town pretty quickly.
How has that been?
How cool was that to have your dad show up and kind of take the,
be the crutches for you for a bit?
It was definitely cool.
Because I think we were looking to have surgery, I think the end of the week.
I want to say, I think it happened on Wednesday, or Tuesday.
Tuesday, Tuesday, we had the crazy.
Yeah, we think it was Tuesday.
And then Wednesday, I had the surgery.
And then, actually, I woke up that morning.
And then I just had, because I kind of put my phone on you not have to serve
as much stress as possible.
Right.
So I'm not even going to look at my phone.
And then I finally, like, picked up my phone, and then I just saw I had, like, probably, like, 10 or 12 minutes called some coaches or the training staff, and they were like, what they say?
They were, they were like, we can, they have an opening for surgery today so we can get you in a day so we can start the rehab up beginning next week because they knew I was going, after surgery, I was going to have to sit down in a couple of days.
So we found that out.
I called my dad.
I asked him, I was like, would you want me to do the surgery today or just wait until you get down here?
And he was like, I'll call you right back.
He started looking at flights.
He was like, just go ahead and have a surgery.
I found a flight.
I'll be there when we get out.
And then as soon as I got out, he was here.
So, you know, it was definitely good.
Especially just to spend that quality time because I need to stay with me.
I mean, he stayed with me.
He's staying in the hotel when he's down here.
I don't quite good to spend the time.
much time together.
Unless we'll go get some
some food or something like that.
So just him being here,
we watch the bell a coffee fight
and I was before he left.
So just really
spending time with him
and just to go for my spirit.
Trey, okay, so let's, we have to,
just for grins and giggles, we got to
go through the event in
Raleigh. We got to go through that.
Okay, so you're chilling
at the end of the bench.
And Latte engages, and then the crowd gathers.
Now, here, first of all, did you, you know you're on a scooter, right?
Like, you don't belong in the middle of that.
Like, what were you thinking?
Was this to round your guys up?
Was that the whole purpose was just you were going to be the guard dog and get everybody back to the bench?
Honestly, I don't know what was going to my...
He was a moment.
I actually forgot my foot, but I just saw that.
I saw that, and then I just didn't see him anymore.
And then I looked on the bench and see what Bryce was,
and then I couldn't find him either.
I just wheeled on out there.
I forgot that, like, that night, I was like,
what is he thinking?
Then I thought, oh, his little brother's in there.
He's got to go.
He's got to go, right?
Like, you wouldn't be able to call dad.
If you called Bobby and say, look, man, your brother was in a scuffle.
Where were you?
Yeah, you had to show up.
They were actually behind the bench.
And people ended up making it down to the game for that one.
Oh, my goodness grace.
That's right.
You were in Raleigh, and they drove up in South Carolina.
Okay, so that makes sense.
Oh, that must have been a great conversation after the game.
What were you doing?
What were you doing?
and Trey. Last
night was difficult.
It was difficult.
For fans, it was difficult for
the people in the building.
And
I think people forget
that that was really difficult for the players.
That was difficult for the team.
Right? How do you,
how does this squad
bounce back for the night? You're five and five,
and you don't really get a break because you go from
a double overtime game to an early
game in indie.
Here come the monsters in blue.
and then you've got to go down to Atlanta
and face an Auburn team
that's playing this super athletic, big, long, and to play.
But it's all the peripheral stuff that I'm talking about
that I'm worried about.
Because the team hears what people say.
So what's the mindset?
Will there be a conversation before Thursday's practice?
Will there be kind of a players get together?
Will the captains redirect?
How are you guys going to move them from whatever happened last night
to whatever you want to happen Saturday?
Most definitely.
Last night after the game, it was like 2 o'clock in the morning.
I couldn't really sleep.
And I just sent a text in the beach that.
I was like, figure out of time.
We can get together to have a sit down.
I was like, we got to figure this up.
And then all the guys on my side.
We're looking at.
We'll probably have a meeting.
some time of day, watch some basketball.
I know it's probably some games on and really just,
really just talk to each other about what happens.
Obviously, no one can point a finger.
I mean, maybe you could try to point a finger
if it's like a close game, you know, so-and-so missed the rebound,
so-and-so didn't play defense here,
but, I mean, it's a 40-point game.
That's on everyone.
and I know it was even tougher on coaches
because, I mean, they did everything
that they could possibly do the game clean.
I had put the game plan down that we studied
and everything really happened.
So, I mean, it's really a time
when you've got to look yourself in the mirror.
I mean, we play a tough Auburn team
who just picks up full court 40 minutes.
So I feel like that will be the true chance, whether good or bad happens,
to see who's really rocking with us as a team and not really individually,
because it's going to take all of it or it's going to be ugly.
That was something my college coach used to say.
It's either going to be on all of us or it's going to be about all of us.
And I think for this group of guys, and it's the conversation we had before the season,
when the distractions happens, do you have a redirection?
Like, this is the recalculate we were talking about, right?
That this appears that we're not headed working from the things that you guys said you were working to.
I'll ask you this.
Is it possible for you guys to find an answer and turn this thing around?
No, definitely.
That was kind of the bright spot I kind of had
kind of once I went down and got hurt,
especially after the SEP State game,
just how together we were.
Yeah, that was just how together we were the whole LEP state game.
I just thought that was just going to bring us even closer together.
And then just to watch the game yesterday,
and see how separated, how separately we were.
And that was definitely frustrated.
Okay.
Then I'll ask this.
What message do you have for the Husker fans who are listening?
I can't wait to get back with this team,
but, I mean, we do going to get it figured out.
I mean, we're going to have the talk with the guys.
I mean, we're going to get to pick it out,
but I can't wait to get back out.
there.
Captain, you are appreciated.
You're respected, sir.
Thank you for standing up when it would have been easy just to pull the covers over your head
and wait for the day to pass.
But you stood up, you showed up, you got in the light, and you're leading.
Thank you for what you do on the floor and off, because I know that that stuff matters
even more.
So you are appreciated, young captain.
Appreciate you.
Appreciate you.
All right, man.
Trey McGowan, Husker basketball.
