Starting point is 00:00:00 It's time to go one-on-one with D.P. Coming at you live from the couple Chevrolet GMC Studios. Here is your host, Derek Pearson, presented by Beatrice Bakery, on 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticketfm.com. Happy Thursday, everybody. I appreciate you joining on a Thursday. It's actually very beautiful out of this, gorgeous edge. good stuff around town
Starting point is 00:00:36 some good news with a win last night at PBA by the lady Huskers Big volleyball weekend in store and of course oh by the way a trip to Camp Rendell for the Huskers I heard a buddy of mine described this football team as the scrappy Huskers
Starting point is 00:00:58 scrappy scrappy football team that's a scrappy football team you have out there and Lincoln. I'll ask your opinion on that in a second. You know the deal. Hit me up. Hit me with a what's up DP. Let's get the conversation going.
Starting point is 00:01:14 402, 464-5-6-85. You can call in as well, the Honda Lincoln Hotline. You can follow on the Sartar Human Live video stream. You can catch us on Facebook, YouTube, Twitch. Those chat rooms are open as well if you feel up to it. Say, hey, say what's up, and we'll get it going. Yeah, I want to start with something outside of Lincoln, just for a second. I don't know about you guys, but I got like a Twitter alert, you know,
Starting point is 00:01:46 that there's like a thing that's out there that folks probably shouldn't look at or whatever. And the story was based on former NFL running back Zach Stacey. and video of Zach Stacey putting hands on his girlfriend and mother of his child
Starting point is 00:02:07 and shame shame it's an awful thing I just I don't understand the need to put your hands on on anybody certainly mother your child
Starting point is 00:02:25 woman in general strangers. Can we get less violent? Is that possible? Can we make a, a conscientious goal to not be horrible human beings at every turn? We're better than that. We must be better than that. Let's hope. Let's hope. Adam, what's up, Adam? Man, appreciate your brother. So up, D.P. Thoughts on Husker baseball schedule this year. 55 games, bulk of them at home, which was, I'm not sure if that's the norm,
Starting point is 00:03:08 whether they run at that sort of space. Interesting folks coming in. Opening Sam Houston, February 18th, so, you know, a couple months away, three months away. I'll play seven-eighthubble hitter, head her down in Huntsville. Then they'll play kind of back-to-backs that weekend. TCU, down at Ranger Stadium.
Starting point is 00:03:34 That's going to be pretty fantastic. Great place to play a game. Got the coach down there. High school team got to play in that building. It's pretty amazing. Then they will come home in March. So they'll spend the first several weeks on the road in warmer climate down in Texas, hopefully warmer climate.
Starting point is 00:03:54 And then there will be three weeks in between that, two weeks, until they go head-to-head with San Diego State at Haymarket Park for a Friday, Saturday, Sunday three-game series. Over to Manhattan, Kansas, Kansas State. Then back to Haymarket against Long Beach State, which is always going to be interesting and good baseball. game set Friday, Saturday. That's three game set, sorry. And then following that, midweek, Tuesday, Wednesday against New Mexico State at Haymarket, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, which, you know, always good. Three games set there.
Starting point is 00:04:43 They'll stay at home against South Dakota State on the 23rd. And then Big Ten play will begin with a three-game series. at Haymarket Park against Michigan. So they'll face Creighton in March after the Michigan series and then back full dive into it. I think they'll find out pretty quickly that the depth of arms, that the people that they wanted to line up a ton of arms, and we'll get to see them.
Starting point is 00:05:16 And you'll have some midweek games where you chance to see different guys, right? Jory says, what's up, D.P.? What's up, Jory? Yeah, Husker baseball will be fun to watch. You know, the reigning defending Big Ten baseball champions. Pretty good, right? Pretty good. Pretty good.
Starting point is 00:05:36 Brian T. What's up, D.P.? What's up, big man? He says, I finally listen to my own advice, downtime coming a few weeks. Have a good rest of you today. Same to you, sir. Don't work too much. But, you know, there are events at the arena this weekend.
Starting point is 00:05:48 You know, you know the deal. Adnan says, what's up? What's happening? Yeah, it's fun to get your eyes forward. But the sports that are happening now, big weekend for Huskers volleyball, great performance by the Lady Huskers last night against Creighton, got out to a big lead from start to finish and just, you know, they ran out of gas a little bit towards the end and Creighton made a run. But they knocked down their free throws down the stretch. and got the win. They improved a 4-0.
Starting point is 00:06:28 It's a great job. I do want to give them credit. It held that team to 62 points. A 20-point first quarter, I'm pretty sure Amy Williams has something to say about the 42 points in the second half. That's a little above the standard that's been set by the Huskers. But a couple of things happened last night that I find very intriguing. So, Izzy Boren had come into this game,
Starting point is 00:06:51 17 points a game, a little over 17 a game. And last night she struggled. Two of 11 from the field, 0 of 2 from 3, 1 of 4 from the free throw line, and circle the free throw line because Izzyborn has struggled at the free throw line. And the Big Ten, she's going to be put at the free throw line. Let's just say that. But she did contribute with seven rebounds and three assists along the way, or seven rebounds.
Starting point is 00:07:14 5.7 rebounds. So they had to find another way to be successful. And you talk about depth and you talk about creative play. Of course, Sam Hebe finds away in important games. Three of ten from the field, oh, three from three, but she was nine of eleven from the free throw line to go with five rebounds and five assists. Three steals along the way, 15 points as your captain battles. What happens as well is that we have begun to identify that Alexis Markowski is going to be legit
Starting point is 00:07:47 and there's not much question about it. 4 of 7 from the field off the bench, three or five from the free throw line. She gave me four rebounds in her minutes. And the fact that, again, she didn't play a lot of minutes. She played 13 minutes, 11 points and four rebounds in 13 minutes. Bella Cravens, 4 of 9. For her 9 points, 3 rebounds.
Starting point is 00:08:10 The difference makers for me, like Jack Shelley does, even if her shot's not going down, she impacts the game in a positive way through other things. When you have a point guard that's pulling down, again, last night she pulled down nine rebounds. She's averaging eight for the season, I believe. That's pretty incredible. Nine rebounds, three assists, and go with her four points. She didn't particularly shoot it well, but she found a way to contribute to that too.
Starting point is 00:08:33 And Ashley Skagans has been pretty exceptional from Beyond the Art. Three or four last night, all of them big, even some range to it. She went to a greater depth for her nine points. And then some of the burden being removed. moved from the players that you would normally think about when you've got Markowski coming off the bench. Ruby Porter gave you 14 minutes, 4.14 minutes off the bench. Allison Weiner, who just impresses from night to night.
Starting point is 00:09:03 She's got moxie savvy. She plays from a high IQ place, 12 minutes. She gave you four points, but she contributed defensively as well. And then Kendall Kohle gave you 18 minutes, hit a big three, as Creighton made a made a run. Same for Kendall Moriarty, the freshman. She hit a big three in her seven minutes. Michael Caden got two minutes, and then Anika Stewart,
Starting point is 00:09:27 who they're trying to think. And here's the thing. We know Anika can shoot it. But there seems to be a movement to get Anika to work on the post game, and it'll be necessary, right? Nebraska fan says, yeah, Kendall Cole, the defense was fire last night. Yeah, her length is exceptional. She plays.
Starting point is 00:09:46 She's very tenacious. It's kind of cool to watch. her kind of attack people defensively. And then, yeah, her hitting the three from the top of the key was a big add-on. It was a big add-on. So kudos to the Lady Heskers. They, you know, not much time to rest. They will fire it up again and get it going.
Starting point is 00:10:05 It's, you know, for the games that are required for them, 4-0, then you've got North Carolina Central Saturday at noon. So if folks are looking for something to do from noon, two, you can do that. If you're going to come down a pinnacle bank arena and watch the women, give us a shout out. Then Drexel next Friday, San Diego State, San Diego and Fresno the following weekend.
Starting point is 00:10:36 So there's that, and then they head into the Big Ten ACC Challenge against Wake Forest down in Winston, Salem, North Carolina on December 1. So there's tons of stuff there. good news with that, Lady Huskers and volleyball have to get it together, right? It's that time of a year. They're currently sitting at 19 and 6th. They'll face Penn State. We know how to battle that.
Starting point is 00:11:01 That's going to be. There's no secret there. Be at the Vanity Center Friday at 8 p.m. And then Saturday at Devaney Rutgers for senior night, tribute time for the seniors and within the Huskers volleyball program. It would be a good night to kind of show out. It'll be after the football game so you can find your way to Devaney
Starting point is 00:11:23 and show your appreciation for the seniors in this program. And those seniors have had quite a bit to talk about. Men's basketball, again, with the great news that Trey McGowan's surgery went well. He's got his feet up, His dad's in town looking out for him, so hopefully he's settling in and comfortable. Takes a big burden to worry about that kind of surgery, but it's on your foot, and I think he'll be fine.
Starting point is 00:11:59 The news of the day, as far as men's basketball, is that Keon Edwards. Keon Edwards is going to step into the starting lineup for the Huskers at Trey's position. And it speaks to a couple of things. If you're trying to amend things that haven't worked, and then you're trying to continue to do things that have. With that, I say, Kendall's ability to shoot his freakish athletic ability. Trey's pretty explosive. Kian can jump out of the gym as well, and he is a sniper when he's on.
Starting point is 00:12:36 He can get it going. A little surprise that they put him up, but not because Kian isn't talented. Keon's look I think he's going to challenge the nine points that Trey put up. I don't think that's going to be much of a problem. Runs the floor, rebounds
Starting point is 00:12:56 at a high level. But I think what it also allows Fred Hoiburg and the staff to do is to include that second five that as a unit that plays and practices together, together.
Starting point is 00:13:14 If you can put out a shooters group, which they did against Creighton the other night, of Kobe Webster, Kesey Tominaga, C.J. Wilcher, Brian Bach. If you wanted to go small, you can go with Trevor Lakes. If you wanted to go with size, you can go with Eduardo Andre in that space. You've got the ability to keep guys who practice together playing together. A lot of people talk. about Creighton's chemistry. Well, if you watch that second group and a group of shooters, a group that shoots it pretty well from three, keeping them together because they're familiar with how things will break down for them. They know where to get each other shots and,
Starting point is 00:14:01 et cetera. I kind of like the idea of keeping that separate. And you could run them. You can single piece that thing, which is fine. I mean, there'll be times when Kobe's playing in Keon's on the bench, and Keon goes to second group. It'll be. times when it's Tominaga and the other guys and there'll be times when C.J. Wilters and with that first four. They're going to face the team in Idaho State tomorrow night that return all five starters from a 19 and 19 a year ago. And there would be no excuses except it. A win is necessary. It's mandatory. Some urgency is required. Because it's an opportunity to move this season into a different direction
Starting point is 00:14:57 than where it's currently headed. So let's make that move. Again, not to belabor the point, but five returning starters and a winning team. No bigger player above 6-9. I think they've got two kids at 6-9 and a couple of 6-8. But they've guys, it's weird when you watch film of Idaho State because they, man, they shoot it from anywhere all the time. Pretty good rebound team, but man, they will shoot it long rebounds. They'll catch it and follow and try to get to the glass on the second shot.
Starting point is 00:15:37 If you take the glass away, they'll jumpstop pivot and kick out to a shooter who will shoot the three from anywhere, anytime, any place. I try to stay away from those. well, this is one that Nebraska should be able to win. But the urgency needs to be put on this. There needs to be urgency on this thing, especially on a Friday night in Haymarket. It's prime time. You're the only, you're the game in town.
Starting point is 00:16:11 Go have at it, right? I mean, you're going to be without Trey. You're going to be without your captain. You're going to be without the guy who verbally, he and Derek Walker get them into the right things as often as possible. That needs to be filled. And I'm not sure that Keon Edwards is that voice.
Starting point is 00:16:38 He's going to have to be, whether he's comfortable in it or not, but he's going to have to be that voice. And it's the opportunity to get ahead of this. Jeff says, what's up? What's up, Jeff? I was really how in this team coming in, but their first couple of games has worried me. Team doesn't seem to have an edge,
Starting point is 00:16:58 and I think it's apparent verge of it. doesn't fit the Hoyberg offense. Okay, so first of all, it's a misnomer to call it the Hoyberg offense. It's how basketball at high levels is being played. Spread the offense. This is not new or unique to Nebraska. Right? If you look at the NBA game, it is a spread the offense.
Starting point is 00:17:20 Offense creates space, pick and roll at the top, right, ball screens at the top, get downhill, finish if you can. draw an extra defender if possible, jump stop kick if that's taken away from it. Reset, pass the ball, move, make defenders move. Probe and re-probe. That's basketball at its bare essence right now. So when people say it's the Hoyberg offense,
Starting point is 00:17:51 no, this is the way the game is being played at most levels at a high efficiency. Now, the difference being is how effective your point and your pick setters are. How effective are your shooters? And if Nebraska's not shooting up to percentages that we thought they were going to shoot at, then that puts more priority and focus on that point guard or that drive guard making a play once he gets into the paint. You need to be able to finish.
Starting point is 00:18:20 And all that to be said, I mean, Verge has to finish better. In this offense, it's mandatory that he finishes. but also that he has to have trust in the shooters. Once he gets into the paint and gets to the decision line, he's got to be able to jumpstop, and know where that extra defender came from. If that defender comes from the baseline and comes from the wing, he should kick to the corner.
Starting point is 00:18:44 Tomorrow night, on one corner, you'll have Keon Edwards, the other corner, you'll have Latmanian. You'll have shooters at both corners. But there has to be a trust that if Verge gets by his defender and occupies another defender, He has to kick it to a shooter that not only is prepared for the ball, but to be prepared and ready to knock it down. And the shooters have to execute.
Starting point is 00:19:10 They got to knock it down. I can tell you, most point cards, they're going to give up the ball when they are already in the paint. They better have confidence that the shooter is going to knock down the three. Like, that's required. It's very required. and the chemistry between the ball and the pick screen that's coming is they trust that they're going to be where they need to be.
Starting point is 00:19:38 They're going to have to be of the same mind. So point guard and big have to be on the same mind, same brain. All right, to go through this thing, create space, create friction, and then get to space. He needs a contracted defender. If there's no resistance there after the pick and roll, go ahead and finish. But he's got to be able to finish. Remember, there's several parts of this. And the base premise of it is that this is an execution game.
Starting point is 00:20:09 Everybody in basketball knows the rules of basketball. Like every team that they face are going to know where the head should come from, how deep it should go, how long you should hold it, what the role is off the pick and roll, or is there a dive? Is he going to jump back out of the free throw line for a free throw jumper? All of those things are in play. If a defender helps, go to wear pressure if you feel pressure. go to pressure. So somebody leaves a corner three shooter to defend your drive going to the
Starting point is 00:20:39 paint. One, you have to maintain an angle fair enough so that you can get that ball to the shooter and get it to them with something on it. And the corner shooters have to be ready to prepare. And with Latt, man, you can look at it. When Latt catches above the waist, right at the numbers and move straight to a shot, he's a knockdown shooter. Same for Keon Edwards. When you have six, seven, and six, nine shooters, there's a lot of body parts to do. move. So if they do less better and they are prepared, the feet are separated, the feet are apart, they keep their spacing.
Starting point is 00:21:14 They've got the footwork set so they don't catch a step out of bounds. It's what you see a ton of times when you kick it to a corner three shoot. That defender then has to close out again. And if you're really good on the corner and a defender closes out to you, he should take it as a disrespect. He could pump fake that. because remember he's caught it, he hasn't put it on the floor. He can pump fake that and then go baseline or go towards the middle.
Starting point is 00:21:41 I don't want him to go. Look, there's a lot of these guys like going baseline because it makes the big man turn and have to face him. And if you can drive directly at the big man and make him commit to it, then you've got a big man that's open that can catch and finish. But there has to be trust at every part of this thing, from the point guard to the big that comes out to sets the pick, right? Are they an agreement on which side he wants his pick to go?
Starting point is 00:22:08 Right? Because there's an offense that has to happen after the pick. So do you want to go right side, left side? Now, in a perfect world, you've got, his spacing is just that. Like he's going to dive and if done properly, the center can hold a defender. If done really well, he can hold two. He'll occupy one and hold the other. But if not, if he gets through and it's just a fade,
Starting point is 00:22:34 then you've got to restart and reload. This is where Nebraska is having problems. They're not trusting the pick and roll. They're not trusting getting to the decision on and making that decision. They're not doing the basketball fluid thing, which is a jump stop, which allows you to pivot to any shooter on the floor
Starting point is 00:22:52 instead of just one where you jump off one foot and you've got only one guy you can give the ball to. And then that point guard, once he gets past his defender, even with his defender, he's got to trust that the shooters on the floor are prepared, ready, and able to knock down the jumper. Think of yourself as a point guard, and if you give somebody the ball three times and nothing good happens from it, how often will you continue to give that person the ball?
Starting point is 00:23:24 Now, if they're fluid in this thing, close out means pass and go. Simple. Shot's not there. If it's defended, you can go by or you can move it again. There are many parts to it. It's not one thing. It's a lot of things. It's a lot of things.
Starting point is 00:23:46 From the Texan, they need more capable big man who can rebound and stretch the floor. Verge needs to distribute a bit better. To be fair, shooters haven't knocked down shots when Verge found them. Yeah, all of those things are in play, right? All of those things are in play. Big man rebounding and defending. And look, for the Biggs in Nebraska, their bigger, their greater issue is defensive rebounding so that there aren't additional shots going up.
Starting point is 00:24:10 but teams are learning to pull Nebraska's Biggs out of paint and into deep water. It takes the best rebounder out of the space. Verge does need to distribute better, but the shooters have to knock down shots. If I've got a point guard and he continually gives the guy the ball who's 0 for 5, me and the point guard are going to have a talk. Like, what are you doing? And point guard will have an answer.
Starting point is 00:24:38 We'll get me a shooter. give me some of that it's not going to go over five. And all of that's in play. What up, DP? It's so painful anymore that I have to remind myself, no game is simple for any Nebraska athletics team. In relation to football and basketball, I think the win this year versus Northwestern
Starting point is 00:24:53 is the only time the opponent didn't actually show up and we make them look like ballers in the last eight years. When does that change? That change, that happens in a lot of programs. And the change happens when the players, coaches, decide that they're tired to get beat up. They're tired of getting outplayed, the tired of being out prepared, the tired of not executed.
Starting point is 00:25:15 See, at this point in your career, you should know what you do well, and you should be able to repeat that. Playing at the higher level, everybody in the game can shoot. It's the people who shoot consistently at a high level that play at the higher levels. If your numbers go down, guess what?
Starting point is 00:25:31 You can go down to D2 and take all those bad shots you want. They'll take you for the good night and forgive you for the bat. but in the Big Ten conference, that's not the case. And the players will tell you, we've got to knock down shots. We got to play better. They know what needs to happen. There is a time that comes when players decide simply that enough is enough,
Starting point is 00:25:52 and you're going to get that done. It is a mental toughness. It's a physical toughness. It's a preparedness. It's being knowledgeable about what it is that you do, what your teammates do, being honest to yourself and your teammates about what's going on, communicating with your coaches and making sure this stuff is in play.
Starting point is 00:26:12 And there is a line that happens in every sport for every athlete and every coach. And it's the line where you reach it and you say, enough is enough. This is not good enough. I have to get better. We have to get better. And until you do, and it sounds easy and it sounds convenient and it sounds cliche. But players, look, at some point the players have to step up and say, I'm done. I'm done.
Starting point is 00:26:39 Like, this dude's not better than me. I'm not working hard enough. I'm not taking care of myself. I'm not taking care of my teammates. I'm not holding my teammates accountable. I'm not representing the program the right way. All of those things are in play. And there's a line that happens when teams just go,
Starting point is 00:26:58 enough. We're done. Michigan State said we're done. Cincinnati, getting pushed around. We're done. Wake Forest. Pushed around for decades. We're done. There is a way and a means to it.
Starting point is 00:27:20 We'll know when the line has been crossed because the actions will show it. The results will tell us. To break more, again, hit me with the what's up. We'll get you through. Thank the folks from Beatrice's Bakery. We're going to make somebody smile here in the next segment because we can't.
