Starting point is 00:00:00 It's time to go one-on-one with D.P. Coming at you live from the couple Chevrolet GMC Studios. Here is your host, Derek Pearson, presented by Beatrice Bakery, on 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticket FM.com. What's happening? Lincoln. Happy Monday. What's up?
Starting point is 00:00:34 I hear there's news. Huskers win the 2020 national championship. Is that what happened? Is that what happened? We're all good. We can print the church now. National champions. That's what you wrote on the board.
Starting point is 00:00:48 2022, 2022. I want to thank you folks for adding us to your afternoon. We appreciate it. 402, 464, 56685. Honda Lincoln Hotline, you can call in, vent, celebrate, cheer. You can go to the Sartre Hematex line and fire away. Hit me with a WhatsApp DP.
Starting point is 00:01:14 And I'll read your text. Promise. Get to it. Good stuff all the way around. You can follow us on the Starterhamming video stream. YouTube, Facebook, Twitch. Do it. Get there.
Starting point is 00:01:25 Do it. Do it. Do it. Rico. Can I borrow you for a second? Just one second. I need to borrow Rico. In the great grand spirit of,
Starting point is 00:01:37 look at Nick being. Look at him on his game. Why are you yelling? There you go. Hi. I couldn't hear. I couldn't hear. How are you? It was off. It's okay, bro. Good. How are you? I'm sorry, man. I had a bad take, apparently.
Starting point is 00:01:55 I don't care. My take. I don't care. Yeah, I read that on the text line. I don't care. My take. I believe in it. Horrible. It was terrible. That take, you didn't agree with it either. I don't even know what it was. That take was horrible. I don't care what it was. Horrendous. Horrendous. Horrendous. Horrendous. Stupendous. I wanted to say, I want to start the week. off right. I want to say thank you
Starting point is 00:02:15 to you guys. Because you guys do a heck of a job and it's appreciated and I just wanted to say that. Okay. Well, thank you. Simple deal. So the first time that we've had breaking news on our show actually. It was actually pretty wild. It was a lot of fun. How about that? I've had breaking news, I think, once before
Starting point is 00:02:32 on a show. I don't remember what it was. And the transition that we had to talk about the breaking news. The transition from what we were doing to the breaking news. Oh, it was fantastic. Okay, you heard it. Oh, we do a good job? Well, here's the thing. This is what's funny, right?
Starting point is 00:02:44 This is what's funny, because I'm sitting in the back, and I've spent an entire day planning, planning this three hours of radio. Look at this. Three hours of radio, right? And then the breaking news happens. And your radio is out the window. I'm like, oh, let's just, let's just, let's just take that, that 12 hours of prep and throw it out. I can look like Tom Tibido. I was like, what is the one?
Starting point is 00:03:09 I don't think you can look like Tom Timito. I could look like Billy Donovan. We can look like Tom Timiton. We can look like Tom, I was like, what in the wide, wide world of sports is going on? Throw this thing away. The entire idea. Throw it away.
Starting point is 00:03:20 Jokes on you. Yeah. Restructured contracts, they'll get you. You know, it's there. So I just wanted to say thank you. Well, thank you. I love it. I'm going to wear this tonight when the Knicks beat the Sixers.
Starting point is 00:03:31 Actually, what they do is when teams have all of their star players out, the Knicks also play like trash. So it's fine. Joel and B. Tobias Harris and a bunch of other people. Furcon, Corkman's is going to have. 35 points. You just, like, you just make that up just so you can say his name. Like there's literal corkman. Yeah, like that's really all that's about.
Starting point is 00:03:49 He's going to go off, watch. Okay. What's the over, what's the over under that? Give me, give me the under. For Furcon? Yeah. I would. And I'll hold you to it.
Starting point is 00:03:59 I will put it at 23. That is so high. Ricky Rubio was eight for nine from three. Okay. And 34 points last night. Are you getting tired of Knicks talk? No. No, because it's hilarious. Ricky Rubio shoots like 32%.
Starting point is 00:04:18 He just got the shovel and digging himself in a bigger hole to climb out of later in the year. That's fine. They're six and four. Honestly, if you would have told me before the season, they start six and four, I'd be happy. I wouldn't have expected the four losses. Yeah. What happened. Side note about the laughing and the transition we had to do. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:34 Kudo guy wants the clip of you laughing as a ringtone at 206 p.m. It needs to happen. I couldn't continue. It needs to be in. We were crying. We were crying. Not laughing. And then Hafford looks up from his laptop and I lost it.
Starting point is 00:04:48 We were crying. We were actually crying. And then all of a sudden I see my Twitter just flood with the announcement. And then we're like, oh, snap, we got to talk. We got to do this. We got to do sports. Yeah, it's like, oh, by the way. There's news.
Starting point is 00:05:00 Scott Frost. Anyway, thank you, guys. Thank you, sir. Thank you, D.P. Have fun with what you're going to have to talk about. I'm going to have fun. I'm not talking. I'm just asking questions.
Starting point is 00:05:10 Have fun with the text line. Because they've, they've got takes. I've got, I've got, all I know is the Huskers will win the 2022 national championship. So that's it. And nothing else matters. Nobody's opinions or facts matter. Everything is fixed. Everything's good.
Starting point is 00:05:26 Everything's good. What's happening to people? There's a lot. I hope to see many of you tonight, 6 o'clock, down at the upside bar and lounge. We'll have ticket weeknights with Nicole Griffith live on location. Of course, Connor Hapner will be there with. her amongst others. Got some Huskers going to show up and say hi to folks.
Starting point is 00:05:46 Rocky Rooster from the Lincoln Stars will be there. Like, we'll have a good evening. They'll be giveaways. The prizes, they've got tacos. They've got tacos. Cheap tacos. I think it's like 50 cents a taco, you know, a dollar if you want to go deluxe or something crazy. Yeah, just amazing like that.
Starting point is 00:06:03 But we got signed Georgia's giveaway, both Steelers and Huskers. So make your way down there. Start to 6 o'clock. Go till 8. We'll probably be there for as long as they allow us. The upside barn lounge, 27th and Pine Lake Road. Free parking. See you there.
Starting point is 00:06:21 Be greatly appreciate it. It should be good stuff. I'll jump straight to the Sardhaman text line because apparently you guys need to be heard today. So we're going to let you be heard. Brian T. Say, what's up, D.P.? What's up, Brian T? Glad to hear you start this lovely week.
Starting point is 00:06:39 Yeah, living at PBA the rest of the month. I'll see you down there, brother. I'll see you down to tomorrow at noon, and then again tomorrow night at 7. Just as a heads up, tomorrow night, normally strict would go from 6 to 8th. We will go national until the end of the game, and then Strict, I, Bach, Big Sky,
Starting point is 00:07:00 there'll be a whole bunch of us here, giving you, you even get a phone call from Connor Happer. You know, we'll do a whole full post-game show for you on the Huskers Western Illinois Hoops season opener. We'll do that. Husker fan in Manhattan says, What's up, D.P.? What's up?
Starting point is 00:07:15 I'm scared to check my Twitter account with this news. I'm very happy. Don't be scared. Don't be scared. It's just Twitter. Simple deal. Kent, you forgot the magic words. My brother, we've got to get you there.
Starting point is 00:07:28 Chance, we got to get that, man. We got to do better. Doug says, what's up, DP? What's up, Doug? How do we reconcile that Frost and company were very close to upsetting four top 10 teams with the fact that they have won power five wins? this season because they're both true. See, the truth is simple. The truth is very simple.
Starting point is 00:07:50 And we're okay with saying, listen, this is a team, a coaching staff that is responsible for, almost upsetting four top 10 teams and the fact that they only have one power five wins. Both are true and they can be said. They can be said. Scott says, what's up, DP? What's up, Scott? I'm glad I don't have to listen to any more. more will they, should they fire a frost conversation, but now it gets focused in on the assistance. But we don't know what they're going to focus on because they haven't said. It hasn't been said.
Starting point is 00:08:26 In the very same statements that we got, nothing was said about assistance. Nothing. Nothing. So that's a thing. We'll wait to hear from that. I'll address that later as well. Cadoca guy says, what's up D.P.? What's up, Cadova guy?
Starting point is 00:08:43 If you can pull me the clip of Rico laughing at 206 p.m. That would be great. I need it for New Sonefeldringer. Yep. Rico and Nick will work on that. You know, see how it is. From the text line, what's up, D.P.? What's one thing, in your opinion, can Frost do next year that will improve the team's chances of winning?
Starting point is 00:09:05 That's a great, great text name. I'll go with that. that. I like that. What's one thing in your opinion can Frost do next year to improve? This may shock you, but I would say accept responsibility for winning
Starting point is 00:09:27 games. Yeah. Yeah. Accept responsibility. Holding people accountable. I think that makes a big difference. It makes a huge difference. Tater says, what's up, DP? What's up, Tater? Appreciate your brother.
Starting point is 00:09:44 What's up, DP? thanks for bringing joy. Yeah, I mean, even on tough days, right? Even on tough days. Busy days, good days. This is a Monday after a loss, right? I mean, this is, you know, Ohio State still lurks in the rearview mirror. And directly in front of you is Wisconsin.
Starting point is 00:10:12 And remember, I am consistent. If I'm not a lot of things, I'm consistent. So what I would be saying today is beat Wisconsin. That would be my focus is beat Wisconsin. Beat Wisconsin. If the focus is on contract reconfiguration and on recruiting, it's not on the very next thing that we are here to talk about, which is beat Wisconsin.
Starting point is 00:10:40 And the distraction of, hey, this is this, it's all like I've played three card money. I understand. But my focus is simple. And I tend to stay focused that way, that if I know what the next important thing is, which is beat Wisconsin, then all the rest of the stuff falls in line with it, and you can move forward.
Starting point is 00:11:07 That's true. Kent says, what's up, DP? What's up, Kent? Easier schedule next year, probably a bit less town. Is six wins next year? Is six wins next year the baseline? Let's go through it step by step because that's how I process things.
Starting point is 00:11:22 Easier schedule next year. Doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. What this team has shown us that they will play at the level and just below the teams that's on its schedule. Statement of fact. So I'm not tripping. I'm not looking at the schedule. Probably a bit less talent.
Starting point is 00:11:46 We don't know who the starting quarterback's going to be. Do we have the receiving room that you want? Do you have the offensive line room that you want? Are you going to fill in that incredible secondary that you, that's so experienced? I mean, you know, if six wins is the baseline, I'll check out. I'll emotionally check out. Because six wins is how you got the three.
Starting point is 00:12:15 Setting the baseline for six wins in the season is how you got the three wins. the two are directly tied together. Just that. Brian says, what's up, DP? What's up, Brian? Who are your two top assistants you were replaced on the staff? Not going to do it. Not going to do it.
Starting point is 00:12:39 Because the assumption is that there's only two and that it needs to be assistance. The truth of the matter is you need, everybody needs to be evaluated. exit interviews are going to be pretty interesting this year at the University of Nebraska in the football in the football room. It'll be pretty interesting. Right? It'll be pretty interesting. And the interesting thing, me, about assistance is that the fans have talked way more about the assistance than the coaching, than the head coach has.
Starting point is 00:13:22 and so it would be really interesting to find out what Scott Frost's impression of his assistance is, like his evaluation of his assistant coaches. I can't speak for Scott Frost. I can't speak for the assistant coaches, but I would love to hear from them what their assessment of one another is. And then ask them where they stand on a three-win season. Ask them. Simple.
Starting point is 00:13:48 simple chance from funk Nebraska what's doing DP what's happening restructure meaning less money to put more money into the coaching staff changes no no that's not what it means at all
Starting point is 00:14:03 it's not what it means at all right look what you do with the staff and the budget that's you know Trevin Scott sitting in a room trying to figure out what they want to do with the regents and the boosters, right?
Starting point is 00:14:22 The donors will figure out, again, what they want to put into it, and they will make the numbers mean whatever they need for it to mean to do whatever it is they want to do. But I would ask the question, if it was so important to restructure the deal last year, next year,
Starting point is 00:14:39 why wouldn't you do it this year? Why wouldn't you have done it this year? If this year was the year of urgency, then that probably would have worked. It probably would have worked. Cliftonia Johnson, what's up, DP? What's up? Claytonia, John, what's happening?
Starting point is 00:14:55 Go 1 and 0 versus Wisconsin, then focus on our work. That's it. That's wonderful for me. Like to beat a team, like you talk about improvement and growth and all those things and tell me what you're going to do against Wisconsin. Show me what you're going to do against Wisconsin. That's all that matters. That's all that matters.
Starting point is 00:15:20 You can get caught up in the other stuff, but the recruiting thing is sending out coaches who may or may not be a part of the program next year, which leads you to having discussions that will be awkward along the way. And if they're not here working on beating Wisconsin, what happens against Wisconsin? Does Wisconsin and or Iowa matter?
Starting point is 00:15:47 Do they matter? Because if your attention is on other stuff, then it doesn't matter. It's not the priority. But that's just me. It's just me. Big Slim says, what's up, DP? What's up, Big Slim.
Starting point is 00:16:03 Maybe Florida and Nebraska can swap coaches if neither program works out next year. Contracts and all. That is funnier than you may even think. That is hilarious. And probably has some merit to it. Nebraska ball fan says, what's up, DP? What's up? Are they restructuring Scott Frost's contract to pay Fred Hoiberg more money after the season?
Starting point is 00:16:34 Ah! That's hilarious. That is hilarious. No. Not necessary. Not necessary. Let Fred Hoiberg do what he does. I think that'll take care that.
Starting point is 00:16:48 Speaking of at 4 o'clock, Matt Aldo Massey from Nebraska will join us and get us prepped up and ready for Western Illinois. Again, you got to hit me with the What's Up DP in order to get me through this thing because it's little stuff along the way. It's little. There's a lot. You know, when I first got here, I was told about, I was told about Kool-Aid. I was told about the Kool-Aid, right?
Starting point is 00:17:23 Like, I was told about, like, hey, there are people who, like, head up to the chin in Kool-Aid and then there are those people who avoid it but it appears that everybody was telling me to stay away from the Kool-Aid are now fully engaged to the Kool-Aid. Like it's, this is crazy. Can I ask a question,
Starting point is 00:17:44 Textors? And walk me through this. What's different at 319 than was at 119? What's different for this football team? Did they get additional wins? New recruits?
Starting point is 00:18:04 Better players? Better work? It's the same program. Same program. Hey, if you got your guy, cool. If you didn't get your guy, I'm sorry. But my goodness, you are exactly what you were two hours ago. Ladder guy says, what's up, D.P.?
Starting point is 00:18:26 What's up, Latter guy? The way Nebraska matches up to Wisconsin and Iowa makes me think they're winnable games. I think we're all tired of hearing the term winnable game by now. You are correct. But that's been the issue that through 10 games this season, this team has played at or below the level of whoever they played against. Right? And they were good enough to be bad against Fordham and Buffalo and still win.
Starting point is 00:19:00 And that's fine. That's what happens. but they were at the level of eight other teams and went one and seven against them. They were at the level of everybody they played on their schedule. They were at the level. So what's different? What's simple? What's up, DP?
Starting point is 00:19:30 Shout out to you for the great play. Play-by-play recapture on Twitter. Love watching those. You make it look so simple. You're going to jump on Frost staff and fix this. They don't want me. guaranteed. Those film recaps are really to give me clarity on my opinion.
Starting point is 00:19:51 And if I look at film, right, and anybody that's been on my Twitter understands that there's a lot of time put into it, that you have to watch the game, then watch the game again, and then watch it slow down so you don't miss and back it up and go forward and, you know, try to figure out what it is. and look, I've said 100 times on my Twitter. This team and this program is the product of a million small things gone bad,
Starting point is 00:20:20 keeping them from doing the big things that they need to get done. The small details matter. And if you don't go through and you don't look at what is actually happening on the play when you criticize Adrian Martinez, when the actual thing may be that there were four other people on the play who simply didn't do their jobs, and hold them to the same. accountability that you do, Adrian Martinez.
Starting point is 00:20:46 Right? To say, on the same token, it's to say, I can't point the finger at Scott Frost if it's a particular group or groups who have failed him. I can simply ask him, why is this not fixed?
Starting point is 00:21:01 And he may or may not have an answer, and he may not want to answer me anyway. But the film doesn't lie. The film doesn't lie, and it's in the details. How can a team make 65 plays close to high level and then mess up, mess up on the 14 plays that matter the most. Because that's how big time football works.
Starting point is 00:21:25 And the great programs don't mess up on those 14 plays at the level that Nebraska does. At the moments that Nebraska does. So, okay, I do that so that when somebody asks me, well, why do you feel the way you do? well, I've got checks and balances and receipts. I've got receipts to tell me, listen, you can talk about whatever room you want. What has been seen are small things in abundance. And those small things add up. Jay Foreman likes to say it's a million paper cuts.
Starting point is 00:22:00 Well, that's what's happened to this season. And it doesn't mean that they're awful players. It just means that, you know what, they are the victims of a lot of their own stub toes. They can have a really good day all the way around the rest of the day, but at the most critical moment with the most eyes on it, they stub their toe and it's loud and it's painful, and then it costs them the work that they do. So I watch film for that very reason,
Starting point is 00:22:27 because it explains to me. Look, I'm not surprised. Look, if you don't know what Ohio State was going to run going into the day, it's kind of hard to assess the job that Nebraska did against it. If you don't know what kind of stunts Ohio State runs, and it's really difficult to evaluate the offensive line. Look at the coverages that Ohio State put out there. Those coverages were set up.
Starting point is 00:22:48 They were foundational and fundamental, and it put them in a position where Nebraska could have exploited it if they were on their game. So I do that for my own sanity, and so that when I get in with fans, when we start having these conversations, I can say, here's why I believe what I do.
Starting point is 00:23:14 Husker fan of Manhattan says, what's up, D.P. What's up, brother? Let's see, what up's D.P. Do you think they will attack the transfer portal more? Also, as the coaches head out to recruit, don't you believe we might see some possible changes ahead? Here's the thing about the transfer portal. Who's transferring here?
Starting point is 00:23:33 Who wants to transfer into this system, fit the system, and be able to hit the door running to do the things that this team needs for them to do and this fan base expects. How many dues are there in the transfer portal that fit, though, that check all those boxes? How many of those guys run the same system that Scott Frost runs?
Starting point is 00:23:53 How many of them understand the lingo? They understand the language. They understand the verbiage. How many of them have the right work ethic and understand the Nebraska culture? Right? There's a whole lot of boxes and people act like, hey, this is just eBay shopping.
Starting point is 00:24:07 No, bro. That's not how that works. You need dudes, you need human beings who fit with other human beings. And question, look, if you tell me you need receivers, any receiver worth two plug dickens are going to ask you, who's throwing me the ball? I'm not coming there to just have, like, Joe the Plummer, throw passes to me.
Starting point is 00:24:28 That's an insult to Joe the Plummer. Sorry, Joe. Sorry, Joe. Right? I mean, look, what quarterback is, already in Scott Frost system. What are you telling me? You can bring in another quarterback that has to learn the system and then run it and wait, no.
Starting point is 00:24:48 No. Not that. It's just not simple. That's not how this works. So, yeah, you're going in the portal. You got a runner. You don't use them. Got a receiver. For four games you targeted them and you did well and then the other six games, you,
Starting point is 00:25:06 you kind of. You got to fix what's wrong. You've got to fix what's wrong. And quite frankly, teaching and coaching needs to be elevated as well. Management needs to be elevated as well. So, Rico, you're here to talk or you're just here to get me out of the day. I mean, if you had a question, I would answer it, but I'm here to get you out of the, get you into the break. We will get you in the break.
Starting point is 00:25:32 Listen, y'all, y'all stay tuned. Hit, hit the text line. Y'all know the deal. Hit me with a what's up, DP. I'll get to you more after the break.
