What's happening this afternoon?
What's on your mind?
I'm pretty good.
I called you last Friday, and I was worried about the mindset of the team because of leaving
everything on the field for all those big games and getting nothing out of it.
And it looks like from when I hear from the players, that's kind of what happened in the first
task.
At least that's what they said, that their minds, they weren't.
mainly prepared to play a football game.
This week and the rest of the season, I'm really worried.
I'm worried about guys that may and can and may go pro throwing in a towel
should not get hurt because I don't know what they're,
they may not think there's anything to play for.
And that's pretty much what I wanted to ask you now.
Okay.
What do you think their mindset is?
Okay.
Chance thanks.
A couple things.
It's one, nobody in this team is good enough to take games off.
They don't have the resume to take days off.
They don't.
Matter of fact, they don't have the resume to take plays off.
Everybody on this roster needs to, in fact, add resume.
They need to add tape.
Also, on the other side of this thing,
if people haven't bought in and want to fight for themselves,
so for their own brand, that's issue one.
Issue two is that you're not going to fight for your brother
who's standing next to you who you know needs you
in order to do the accomplish the accomplice of things he needs to accomplish.
And then third, you're not going to fight for Scott Frost?
You're going to fight for your coaching, your room coaching staff?
Like the dude, like we got an answer Saturday
because we expected this Husker defense to ball out for Eric Schenander
after the week he had.
fully expected for them to ball out for their coach.
Maybe they did, and it just didn't work,
but I would have expected and hoped for better.
That's just me.
I think the phrase is urgency,
and that everybody on this roster needs to play every play
from this point forward,
like their shoes are on fire.
That's what I would expect,
and that's what I'm looking for.
That's what I would hope.

Mike, how you doing today, brother? What's on your mind?
All right. How about you, D.P?
Doing well, man. What's on your head?
Well, I've called in a couple times about this.
And, you know, being an ex-lineman, I look, that's where I always look first.
And, you know, since the early 2000s, we have not had what I would call a line that was exceptional.
Not even really good.
And, you know, I think.
that a great line can make an average quarterback and an average key positions look great.
And, you know, I've watched this team this year and last year,
and I'm watching people that are supposed to be really good getting knocked off the ball
instead of knocking people off the ball on the offensive line.
I think that is probably one of our biggest keys that we need to look at.
Yeah, it's not the only one, but I think it's definitely one that we need to look at.
you know, two weeks ago or three weeks ago, Frost got after the line,
and he said he went and spent time with him, and you saw a great improvement.
And then two weeks later, we have three, should have been four fall start penalties.
We can't make any yardage on our first two possessions.
It's just like they forgot everything they learned.
I'll hang up and listen.
Yeah, Mike, great minds think alike.
Mike, we were just talking about that, that how many,
ultimately the big guys determine how games are won and lost.
And we were just talking about it.
Like, how many throws did Adrian try to make?
Has he tried to make in the past four weeks where his throwing window was dirty?
There was a big huge 300-pound paw sitting up in the throwing window.
And those are the little things.
And a lot of times, Adrian, because of his angst, will get nervous and move before he needs to,
the tendency is for him not to have that kind of time,
and he needs to look over his shoulder.
There's a comfort.
Watch a quarterback who doesn't worry about guys coming and getting him from behind.
Watch them.
That's a special thing when you find a quarterback.
Quarterbacks do really amazing stuff
when they can just go back there, plant their feet and throw.
It's when you make them uncomfortable that you find out all the answers.
Same thing for running backs.
Like watching running backs take short choppy steps,
is a statement of indecision that they don't know
and they don't trust their alignment to be where they're supposed to be,
the lane being where it's supposed to be on time and in place.
So you watch that, lengthen your stride.
That's where that comes from,
to be able to play where you can just move your feet as you want.
And that starts up front.
We know who this line is.
I am curious, though, and you guys can help me with this.
Aren't there two linemen who left last year who were in the NFL right now?
Who weren't amazing here?
Like, that's a statement of fact, right?
I'm not making that up.
There were two linemen and a tight end who were on this roster last year.
And they struggled.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
Help me out.
But Farniaks in the league, right?
Stoles in the league.
Chargers got one,
Eagles got one,
Cowboys got one.
And this was a group that struggled last year.
Now,
maybe you're asking them to do things that they haven't done
or things that they don't want to do well.
But reality is
the big boys like them.
Big boys got them
and are doing positive things with them.
So there's that.
Basil says, how does anyone think this gets better this year or even next?
You already know they were making enough mistakes to lose almost every bleeping game.
Okay.
Maturity is a really weird thing.
That the timetable for a person's maturity, individual maturity,
group maturity, so the line and the group of five that are playing together.
or the group of three or four or five that run routes together,
or the running back quarterback,
because those are actually runners in this offense,
and the five in front of them.
And then you've got to consider who they're playing against.
So are those five going to win against the five that they have to block
or the six that are going to defend them?
And a lot of that maturity happens over time,
and it happens differently for different folks.
Now, do I feel all warm and fuzzy about it getting fixed next year?
No.
Because you have to believe something is wrong and you have to say something's wrong.
When you're around flawed people, the toughest thing to get them to do is to get them to recognize there's a problem.
People who grow except, hey, look, I'm really bad at this.
so I need to either work to get better
or I'm going to force everybody to accept that I'm bad at it.
And that's it.
Like that's the line.
So I'm not sure what we've seen that would say that it makes it better.
Look, being able to fix false starts should be the easiest thing you do.
Like I think that's a part of coaching.
You should be able to fix that.
Getting guys to line up the right way.
Formation.
We get formations.
Formations are done an install in May.
You should not be having.
fall start and formation issues in October.
Again, that's what it is.
Man, this is where we are.
Why do we have to change, from the text line,
why do we have to change personnel every play?
You don't have 11 guys that can go out there and run 6, 7 plays.
This is where I line up.
Do less better.
Do less better.
I mean, there's another text.
The guy who got pushing the show into a snowback by T.O.
Tom Osborne ran the same play, four plays for 25 years.
We need to find four plays that we won really well and run them.
At least having those four plays then allow you to get cute.
But you need four plays to get right.
Q to get you beat.
Right will get you, we'll get you where you're pointing to.
And having four plays that you want run exceptionally well.
Or having four formations that you do.
defend extraordinarily well.
At least
increases your opportunity, and
it widens your
your
risk award.
All right.
Gabe,
sometimes I wonder if these coaches are smart as you,
that Illinois game, their first offensive
play of the game, I heard you say in their spring game
that when they're running back lines up deep,
it's play action. They break the huddle, the running
back's nine yards behind the quarterbacks. I'm screaming
at the TV.
It's play action.
Sure as heck, play action to the tight end.
About a 22-yard gain right up the middle.
Why?
Okay.
If we could get the answer to that question,
they would be,
they would have seven wins already.
I don't understand it.
I don't understand it.
There are coaches who have the very job
is to watch and gather data for tendencies.
Now, some people do it mechanically.
some people do it through digital.
I do it with my eyes.
That's just me.
And there are people on the staff that know what it is that they're seeing.
Then the question becomes, are they relaying that information?
And are players accepting that information?
And then are players executing that information?
A lot of boxes to check.
But there are teams who do that.
Really good teams who do that.
There are teams that punish you for your tendencies.
Nebraska for three weeks defensively punished people for their tendencies.
Really good running offenses.
They doubled down and said,
we're going to make you beat us in ways that you're not comfortable.
And it worked.
Now, they had some problems against Minnesota because Minnesota said,
hey, man, guess what?
We're going to beat you at stuff we're not good at,
which is a whole other treasure trove of,
of questions in WTF, but all true.
Husker 52 says the issue with Adrian is that he's not clutch at all makes place throughout the game,
but not when the game is on the line.
He has no two-minute drill.
But that should be fixable.
Why haven't you fixed that?
That's why I said, see, two-minute drill is about the voice in the quarterback's head
and repetitive muscle memory.
that he's doing things when the game is on the line that he does all the time.
With that voice in mind, okay, here's the read, here's my priority, here's where my eyes are,
but most importantly, I need to protect the ball.
So no matter what else happens, I need to protect the ball.
And there are three games that we can speak of where that thing wasn't there, maybe four.
And that should be fixable.
But then I always ask the question, what's the voice in his head when this?
stuff is going on.
Whose voice is it?
Is somebody telling him make the play?
Is that himself?
Is that Verducco?
Is that Lubick?
Is that Scott Frost?
One of the four needs an adjustment.
It might be more than that.
But somewhere in there, how you fix the two-minute drill, how you fix clutch moments,
the rule in coaching and one of the very first things I teach is this.
You all ready?
It cures everything.
Ready? When chaos exists, slow down, and chaos no longer exists. Do the first thing first. When chaos happens, slow down and do your job. That fixes all of that clutch stuff. Free throw line, suicide bunt, making free throws, all of it. That's just me.
