Starting point is 00:00:00 It's time to go one-on-one with D.P. Coming at you live from the Coppull Chevrolet GMC Studios, here is your host, Derek Pearson, presented by Beatrice Bakery, on 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticket FM.com. Happy Thursday, everybody, nothing but ballers today. Ballers, nothing but ballers. It's going to be a good one. Proud of what we're doing with this.
Starting point is 00:00:31 Welcome to one-on-one. I want to thank the folks from me. Biat's bakery for hooking us up. They will appear in this segment later in it, but they're the ones to make this thing go. If you have questions, comments for our guests, have at it. You know how to do it. 402, 464-5-685. Honda-Lincoln hotline, you can call in and speak your piece, or you can hit the text line
Starting point is 00:00:52 and let us know what you're thinking. You can follow the live video stream. Sartre Haman hooked us up. Facebook, YouTube, and Twitch. You can follow and see what's happening. And, you know, I'm the little dude. room and I kind of dig this. I kind of dig it.
Starting point is 00:01:07 Let's bring them in Dallas's finest. From Mustang, Oklahoma. The Fighting Broncos, let's bring in D-Buggy Damien Daniels and Deontre Thomas. Gentlemen, gentlemen, gentlemen. First of all, thank you for doing this. Making time for us on the day. How y'all feeling?
Starting point is 00:01:23 Man, can you hear me? Yeah, you good. Yeah, I feel, you know, pretty good, you know, biweek and everything. First, I just want to start out by saying, thank you for having us on the show. show 93.7 and everything. You know, it's always a good time when we get together. So all the D's. We got all the, this is, this is it, man. You bring it in.
Starting point is 00:01:43 Deiardric, where you been, man? We've been looking for you. Where you been? Man, look, man, I've been, I've been at home, man. Not doing too much. Staying low key. Staying low key. But it's my first time here. Thank you for having me, man. This is the beginning. This is one of those ones where we say. And again, he's a, he's a member of the fighting broncos from Mustang high school in Mustang Oklahoma, that's got to be quite the journey, right? Across the border, into Nebraska, you picked it early, you had options, and you made the choice. Why Nebraska? Because the coach, John Perella, you know, I've been to OU, I've been in their facilities, I've been in, I talked to their coaches, I've been around
Starting point is 00:02:23 their coaches, and when I met, when I came out here to Nebraska, I met John Perella, it was a no-brainer for me. You know, he was just a guy that had a lot of energy, and I felt like he was someone that could really push me, and so I really came here for him. And I'm glad I came here. I really am. Damien, tell us about this dude, right? Like, the stuff that, like, he's sitting there with the hat backwards. He's in the tough dude pose, right? He's immediately, like, letting you know, I got presents. But tell us, tell us the stuff that he ain't trying to tell us right now. Man, first and foremost, man, uh, man, D.T, hey, that's not, that's not, that's not no. show that's nothing that's uh that's how he is you know uh coming in 2017 summer you know
Starting point is 00:03:07 i just seen the dude pull up in the all tinted tahoe lifted and uh blue blue candy paint on the truck i was like man who is this dude got out chest all loud and everything i'm like who is this dude and then you know what hey and when the year went on and everything we're like hey man that's just how he is that's how he is that's how he is da da da da da da and uh and uh and uh and You know, when I met them and everything, we clicked right away, man, and he's been my road dog ever since. Five years strong so far.
Starting point is 00:03:38 This looks like after y'all are done playing football, whenever it is, this is like a pro wrestling tag team. Yeah, I wouldn't mess with us, man. No, I love it. No, man, I love it. I love it. So through where you are now, right, you get a bi-week, what are you trying to do with yourself?
Starting point is 00:03:57 You have some stuff to take care of. You've been healing. This is the healthiest you've been for a very long time. How do you feel? Yeah, like I said, this is the healthiest I've ever been. I feel great. You know, last year I've been battling injuries and all that. So feeling good right now, I'm not worried about anything at all.
Starting point is 00:04:15 I feel great. Boogie, how are you feeling, man? And I'm feeling good. You know, so far this year we eight games in, first biweek. Then we got four more games left and everything with another biweek. And this is by far the best my body. has been feeling and I'm just doing my best and take care of my body and just take it to the next level. How much trust is involved in you guys sharing the same space, playing the same position,
Starting point is 00:04:41 sometimes being on the field at the same time together? How much trust is involved? Because the time shared matters. Like this team is better when you two are on the field, but there are times that can't be. How do you get through that? Is there a competitive thing that? No, no, I got a sack, man. You need to get one. I got a tackle full loss. I need to. to get one. Man, yeah, it is. It does get competitive between us and everything. But, you know, D.T.
Starting point is 00:05:08 He, you know, D.T. He leading with the sacks right now, actually on the whole D-Line. DT got two and a half sacks of the year so far. So what are you doing? D.T. What's the problem? He sets it up for me. Okay, okay.
Starting point is 00:05:21 Okay, okay. He plays off each other, man. Okay. Well, I, because I asked him, and I'll ask you. So let's say you get the strip sack. Right, balls loose, you pick it up, you take it to the house, right? You in the end zone of Memorial Stadium. He gave me an answer.
Starting point is 00:05:38 What are you going to do when you get to the end zone? What comes to mind? Well, I'm going to celebrate with him. I mean, when I get to the Lent Zone, we're going to celebrate together, man. And then maybe next time he'll get the strip sax for him. But now I run up and celebrate with him. He said, first he didn't know what he was going to do. Then he had one dance he was going to do.
Starting point is 00:05:55 Then he thought about throwing the ball in the stairs. And I said, okay. As a group, y'all need to work it out in advance. Practice it because, like, if you're going to do a dance move, everybody got to hit it. Like, you can't. I've been telling him that. I've been telling him that.
Starting point is 00:06:11 I've been telling him that. Who's the better dancer? Man. I say probably him. Probably him. Probably, it probably could be me. It probably could be me. What's your go to?
Starting point is 00:06:24 I'm from Dallas. I detail a buggy. Oh, okay. All right, D.B. Mugie, I'm with you. I'm with you. I'm with you. So we're here. And again, I want to thank you guys for doing it, DeAndre Thomas and Damien Daniels. And on a bi-week, the recovery, you get a little bit more time to yourself. But is this more physical recovery or is this mental recovery just to kind of restart, reboot, reset? Which one is? I would say for me, it's more mental recovery,
Starting point is 00:06:55 you know, just kind of step away and get away a little bit and reset your mind. And, you know, more mental for me. And yeah, same thing, but again, I want to be, stay dialed in and, like, not forget about the mission and everything, but, like, for me, yeah, it's like pretty much getting my body back and my feedback under me. And, you know, just basically being at 100%, so, like, our team, they need us and everything in, like, any situation. So that's the main thing that we try to focus on as well.
Starting point is 00:07:26 Both of you are explosive, but I'll ask you, with explosive, defensive lineman, it's a matter of are you more explosive with your hands or are you more explosive with your feet? I'll ask you, which one are you more you think is more explosive for you? To me, I think I'm more responsible with my hands. You know, I have heavy hands and for me to put my hands on you, I have control, and I can really control the blocking and whatever I need to do. So for me, I'm more explosive in my hands. I'm more exposed to my hands as well. You know, going to start from the ground on your man on,
Starting point is 00:08:00 going straight from your ground on the man on. And, you know, you can't do nothing without your hands. Your hands is an extension of your eyes. You always talk about 111. I've heard a lot of people say it. Break it down for the listeners. Break it down. What is when you guys take the feel, whether it's practice,
Starting point is 00:08:18 whether it's in workouts, whatever, in film study, and then on Game Dead. That one, one in 11 is important. Break it down for them. Man, you know, first off, you got to step out on the field with the right mindset. You know, if you ain't got the mindset that you're going to dominate the dude in front of you, man, you already lost the battle. You know, just making sure your presence is felt like for 60 minutes. 60 minutes plus on making sure your prejudice is felt.
Starting point is 00:08:44 And, you know, you're getting down there, you're getting the call and you put yourself in the mold. And you're looking at the services and backs and everything. Well, Coach T, he's been phenomenal on teaching. us as your whole D-line. Yeah, just putting yourself in the mode and, you know, just going back, falling back on your training. And that's what us doing on 111, making sure you, where you need to be, when you need to be at the right time, you know, your plays are going to come in within the scheme of
Starting point is 00:09:13 the defense. And that's one thing, Coach T and Coach T's, they really emphasized for us. And that's what helps us be a successful team. And, you know, the record, it ain't really saying it right now. But, yeah, the record's not saying it right now. But, yeah, we're there. Yeah, Antoinette, you agree with that? Yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:09:34 Everybody has to do their job, you know. 1-11, that comes to trust, you know. If everyone does their job and not try to do someone else's job, you know, we'll be fine. We'll be great. Who's the get-right guy in the D-line room? I said we call. We all kind of hold each other accountable. We know what the standard is.
Starting point is 00:09:52 and every day we preach it, you know, we got to help, we got to hold that standard every day. For you, in this space where people around the conference are talking about you, like, whoa, this is an improved player, or this is finally the player we thought we were going to see. Do you hear that conversation? Do you hear when people say Damien Daniels has stepped up?
Starting point is 00:10:17 Man, you know, me, I don't really listen or listen, or look for that stuff. You know, my main focus is just my team and just doing my job. You know, all that outside noise, I really don't pay attention. It could be good. It could be bad. I really don't pay attention to all that outside noise. You know, I'm just blessed to be in the position I'm in and playing at the University of Nebraska.
Starting point is 00:10:40 From the text line. He said, you don't get a name. His name on the text line is Webblanket, and he's very smart, very intelligent dude. He said, but they say, I don't normally throw around compliments, but these two young men have been outstanding this season. And in my opinion, Mr. Daniels has played his way into a career playing football. Great work, gentlemen. I think that's the common thread.
Starting point is 00:11:00 And now, like, DeAnd, this is not a transition into being yours. This is now yours as well. Right? And do you have a thing that you are trying to accomplish from game to game from play to play? When you put your hand in the turf, what is going through your? your head. When I put my hand in a turf, it's going through my head is, uh, this is somebody in front of me. He's trying to attack me. If I don't attack him before it gets me, it's over with. So, you know, I got to win this down. So that's what
Starting point is 00:11:32 I'm thinking in my head. I mean, it's on, it's on the wall at the practice facility. It's on the ceiling of the practice facility. Play by play. And to understand that 1-11 that I have to do my job for my, not only for myself, for my brothers. Do you, does that come up in games? Like, When you guys come to the sideline, if it's going the way you want or not going the way you want, who's the voice that speaks loud? Is Shannander on the phone? Is it Toyota in your ear by technique? Or is it you guys telling him what you see out there?
Starting point is 00:12:06 Man, you know, Coach T, he, you know, that's our dog and everything. He sees everything, like stuff that we be on the field playing and everything. But Coach T, he sees everything. You know, he's the guy. that coach at the highest level, player at the highest level and everything. And, you know, we're not cutting that noise out. That's our coach. So we're listening to everything.
Starting point is 00:12:29 He got to say little piece of information he can give us. We always listen to that. And even though we're probably going to see something different, Coach T, his eyes are always right. And his eyes will never miss. So we always getting that extra knowledge, extra wisdom from him on the sideline and everything. And, you know, he just never sets up for failure. How do you, DeAndre, how do you, how do you, how do you, How would you describe Coach Tuiote?
Starting point is 00:12:53 I would say he's a very, very mellow guy, you know. But he's on you. He's on you. He's going to coach you hard. But he's going to make sure you're right. You know, he wants us to leave. He tells us all the time, like he wants us to leave the DeLon Room as better men, and that's his goal.
Starting point is 00:13:07 And I really, I really truly believe that because he's made me a better person. What is he asking for when he says, I want you to be better men? Because it will resonate differently to the people in the world. him. What does it mean to you, Di Andre? Do you? I'll tell you this. Oh, man, like pretty much, Coach, like I said before, Coach T, he's about family, always about family.
Starting point is 00:13:31 And that's one thing he always stressed on us pretty much, like, he's there whenever we need him, no matter if it's good or bad, he's there for us. And his phone is open 24 hours for us, call him in the middle of the night. Yeah, Coach Tiz has been like not just a coach, but a father figure is well, like my father back in Dallas and everything, you know, he, he prays for me every day, but Coach T, he's up here and, like, Coach T's a phone call away if I need him. If Dianre needs some Tilly, Casey, if one of us need him, he's there for us and everything, you know, and we appreciate Coach T.
Starting point is 00:14:09 It's going to be, since it's a by-week, we can do this. So our show sponsor is Beatrice's Bakery. And in choosing what to present to you guys. And this is a subtle thanks from the folks at Beatrice's Bakery and you guys representing the state and doing your thing and carrying yourselves in a way that is beneficial and positive and forward. This cake is no joke. Hey, let's find out.
Starting point is 00:14:46 Let's find out. I'm looking at it right now. Yeah, man. So this is like, yeah, they focus, their specialty is grandma's fruit cake. But this is, this is not grandma's fruit cake right here. I'm going to pass the plates and the knives. I have a rule by dudes bigger than me. I'm not cutting your food.
Starting point is 00:15:09 I'm not cutting your food. This is the chocolate rum cake. Rum's been burnt off, so you don't have to worry about that affecting you. D.T. is going to get his cut first. And I'm paying attention to what size. And then whatever's left, whatever's left, you can give the teammates, or some of you all got date nights coming up. You got date nights coming up.
Starting point is 00:15:35 You might need to take care of, might need to take care of that along the way. We are here with David Adios and Deidreth Thomas. And on a by week, yeah, man, this is, this is, he need that knife. So he, look, because if you don't give him a knife, He'll just cut it. Yeah, he'll tear a finger into it, and it'll be a wrap. There we go. See, that's defensive line cut right there.
Starting point is 00:16:02 That's a defensive line cut right there. All right, here we go. DT's got the first. Just to let you, yeah, he went back in. I was just telling you, this is, this is pretty incredible. Like, this is, yeah, man. Have that? Yes, brother. Yes, sir. Go ahead. Just to let you know, yeah, DT's already into his second cut. Like he went, he went all the way in. These are the folks, again, they're trying to take care of y'all. It's a subtle, small way of the people in the community saying, thank you, thank you for representing them. Thank you for being good dudes about how you go about this thing. It hasn't been the easiest year. And sometimes we get caught up in the minutia. But the reality is, there's a community of folks.
Starting point is 00:16:58 Yeah. Right? Okay, D.T. How would you, how would you describe what you just been into? Just right. Chocolate and some moist.
Starting point is 00:17:13 Yeah, this is. So they're going to take care of you guys going forward in the future. We're going to do some stuff with them. And they've got a whole menu of stuff. We'll let you look at it and take it to you.
Starting point is 00:17:25 You can say, hey, I want to try some some of this other stuff. I definitely would. Show me to men you. Yeah, it is pretty phenomenal. So as we do this, you talked about Tuyote and family. And within that, that defensive line room seems to be one of the most tight-knit groups on the team. Is that a statement of truth?
Starting point is 00:17:50 It is, yeah. We all have different things that we like to do. But, you know, we all, we try to do. different things. You know, we have a guy like Chris, Chris and Nash. They like to hunt. So they've taken us out hunting. You know, we got guys in the room like Casey. They like to shoot. And so we've been to the range. We went shooting. Me personally, I like to go fishing. You know, we didn't have some fishing trips. So this, this DeLong group definitely have a lot of chemistry. And so I'll say we are really tight, you know. And you guys do a lot of stuff.
Starting point is 00:18:23 You go to dinner together. You can do events together. Where does that come from? What Tell the about. Man, you know, just giving back to the community, you know, the support system that gives to us, you know, support us, you know, through the ups and downs and memorial and us being able to have the opportunity to get back to them. It's huge not just for us, but for them as well. Well, other way around, it's big for us, you know, just want to show them the love and support that they give us. You know, we love them as much as they love us. So through eight games and now a break, right? It's an opportunity to redirect, change direction, fix things that you need to fix,
Starting point is 00:19:03 get people healthy because that's a big part of it. And I don't think it's talked about enough that it's very rare past game one that you guys are 100% healthy. Yeah. Is that a statement of truth that it's really hard to stay 100% healthy? Yeah, especially being defensive line. but, you know, every day after practice, you know, we go and we get right. We do something in recovery every day, you know, whether that's being in the tub or or stretching out, you know, getting your body right.
Starting point is 00:19:35 We try to find something to do every day to, you know, keep us right because, you know, we got to count on each other. From the text line, and I told you, we talked about before the show. So listeners don't even trip. Like, this is not a surprise. I'm from D.C. it's a part of my DNA coding that I am not supposed to like
Starting point is 00:19:54 and socialize with cowboy fans that's just how it is like that's just how it is look you're from Dallas you're forgiven I understand I understand like you can't help where you born right but DT that's across the border
Starting point is 00:20:12 it's across the border in Oklahoma we don't have an NFL football team you know Dallas is really the closest one so long adopt better what he's a cowboy's fan so he knows that like i like every night and i'll allow him to call in and say something positive about about the cowboys i'll go ahead and be honest i'll be the better man this is a great year for the cowboys you guys look good look great but still why why like just all the you got 32 teams you got choices you ain't take houston Like, you ain't...
Starting point is 00:20:52 Nothing? Man, uh... That was how it's tradition. Yeah. You know. It's the America's team right there. It is not.
Starting point is 00:21:01 They said, they made it up. It's America's team. The reason why is because when we winning, everything good, even when we lose and we still are taught. So we're America's team, and it's known by far.
Starting point is 00:21:14 You'll make me take the cake back. You take the cake back, man. It's there. Do you guys, do you pay much attention to the NFL? I mean, now you've got reason to have eyes into. But how much time do you guys paying attention to the NFL? You know, we got family and everything in the league. You know, we got my brother, Carlos Khalil Davis, they in the league,
Starting point is 00:21:38 Lou Geppery, you know, guys that we know and everything that we play with and against, you know, it's just good watching them and just looking at them live their dream, you know, because we was, I ain't going to say, yeah, we pretty much, like, we was able to be a part of their journey and, you know, being able to play with them and their football life and everything, just watching them live out there, live out their dreams that they grew up wanting and everything. It's big.
Starting point is 00:22:04 Do you guys, as teammates, do you guys talk about that NFL thing? Do you talk about aspirations, whether I fit? What do I have to do to do to get there? Do you guys talk about it? Yeah, absolutely, yeah, absolutely, yeah. Does that a dream for you, D.T.? Oh, yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:22:20 And when you see yourself in the NFL, you see yourself as an end? Do you see yourself as a tackle? How do you see yourself? I say more of an end. You know, I'm not bigger. I'm not one of the bigger guys, you know, 300, you know, interior guys. So I say in the future I see myself playing defensive end on the outside, rushing, just because of the speed I have.
Starting point is 00:22:41 Bill, you want to play in the three or a forefront? Man, I can play in neither. I can play in the four-man front. I could play the shade all the way to the three, and I could play zero, you know, in three-man front. You know, Coach T. He's been putting, like, giving me pretty much the blueprint of how things are ran. And I think I came a long way, and it's still work to be done.
Starting point is 00:23:06 But I feel like I can succeed in both four or three-man fronts. DeAndre Thomas, Damien Daniels, it appears to me that you guys are students in the game. Now, do you find yourself away from the rest of the team watching film study together? Is that a thing y'all do? Yes, sir, we do a little bit of time, you know. You know, we sit in the living room, you know, cut on the tape, watch some tape, you know, do like film study inside the room, you know, extra stuff, you know, stuff that we pick up on, you know, communicating to, you know, Carl's Khalil, Darian.
Starting point is 00:23:43 They say to some stuff, you know, some tips, and then we just, pretty much the turn on the family. We try to see what they see and everything. D.T., what does he do best? What does Damien do best? I say he comes off the ball hard. Best in a run game, no one can block him. If you try to block him one-on-one, it's over with it.
Starting point is 00:24:02 So I would never try even do that. So I said the best thing about Damien is coming off the ball in the wrong game, you know, attacking that, taking double team, spilling double team, making a play. D.T. What's the D.T. do best? It's a lot of things DT do. His get off, the way he's just shifting, you know. Like D.T. said, he's not the biggest, but, you know, he will beat you.
Starting point is 00:24:29 Like, when I say somebody who strike D.T., he probably one of the best strikers we have. You know, I always talk about establishing a line of scrimmage, and that's what the D.T. does. He establishes the line of scrimmage. You know, some people probably line up over. over him and be like they feel like they feel like they're going to have it easier something but we cut on the tape man d t giving them bobbleheads and everything by establishing the line of scrimmage and you know uh one thing i also would say d t does uh good is uh you know block releasing uh that's something that i really i really need to uh put more emphasis on is violent block releases
Starting point is 00:25:07 uh you know d t he uses his size to his advantage and uh that's something that people can see people can see when they turn on the tape, when they see that, is DT does use his size to his advantage, you know, his leverage and everything, and he's a fun dude to play with. You talked about not being the biggest guy. Mike, coming in, playing nose tackle, even undersized, and now, where are you at weight-wise now,
Starting point is 00:25:33 and what's ideal for you? Yeah, too, I'm at right now, I'm weighing 275, but ideal for me is 280, you know. I feel the strongest, the fastest, you know, that's 280, the ideal. for me. That's almost frightening that you're playing, I mean, in this scheme, there's a lot of mobility and diversity.
Starting point is 00:25:54 You've got to do different things at different times. For you, when you line up at end or tackle, which one makes you feel like you can make plays? Well, I say at the end, you know, because at end, typically you have the one-on-one. You know, when you're playing three-tech, a lot of times you're going to get the double team. So I'll say I make more plays outside of end. But the way we're a coached, everything is like playing, whether it's inside or outside, it's all pretty much the same, you know, two eyes, the same as four-out for us. You know, you get the same blocks. So it's all really the same
Starting point is 00:26:33 for us. Your gap approach is all pretty good. Like, that's a thing I can say freely. You guys on the defensive line, no matter where you're lined up, your gap control is pretty good. But there's a praise that's used. And PJ Fleck was kind of a jerk about it, but he talks about their ability to turn defensive linemen. How do you fight that to get your side? They want to turn you sideways so you're not flat down on. How do you fight that? You know, first, you got it. Oh, we just fight it with pressure or pressure. You know, if he's trying to reach us this way, when we have to come back and get that gap. So it's really just pressure or pressure. You know, the running battery, they're going to always try to run behind the offensive line.
Starting point is 00:27:16 And so it's really just fight pressure or pressure. That's the easiest way for me to say that. You got frustrated Saturday, about not being able to get off the field for a drive. Man, yeah, I let that with marinating the air a little bit. Because I saw the quote, and I immediately thought, man, I would have paid money to be on the sideline when Bougie walked off and said, nope, this is not good enough. We got to fix it.
