You're listening to one-on-one with D.P.
Brought to you by Beatrice Bakery.
On 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticketfm.com.
We can do that.
Let's bring him in.
Oh, Husker's wrestling coach.
Let's bring him in, Mark Manning.
Coach!
Coach, look with you.
You come bearing gifts.
I will show it to the video stream so they can see it.
Don't hate, celebrate.
This is from the Rasker Wrestling Training Center.
He hooked me and Nick up.
Very nicely done.
Very nicely done.
And we will hook him up as well.
Again, the folks from Beatrice's bakery.
We want to start this on a good note.
And I'm just telling you, when you take this back to the squire,
we'll do it early enough where you guys can lose the sugar.
Where we won't feel bad about doing it in season and worrying about going,
Maining going, he missed weight because you and your stupid cake.
So we'll just have it.
a taste. You can tell us, just be honest, tell us what you think. These are life-changing, man.
I'm sure it's great. I'm sure it's great, D.P. You know, but it's a chance to do it. First
of all, thank you for doing it. Bite number one, just, you know, give me an idea. Give me an idea.
Give me an... Oh, that's a 9.9. That's good stuff. You know?
Heather on. Yeah, man, that's a good. That's, right? Like, I just went, wow, that's dangerous.
That is good.
But good for the soul.
That's delicious.
That's good for the soul.
And I met the boss, the owner here.
Yeah, man.
You got Rick Meyer.
He was out here.
Awesome, man.
You know, delivering it.
We'll hook up the team.
And you'll have something to take back.
Take care of them as well.
Just to let them know folks care about you here in this area, man.
It's tremendous.
Thank you.
So where are you guys in your preseason?
Where are you?
I just noticed, I mean, the ticket sale push has begun.
Where do you feel like you guys are?
We're really close to, you know, we're just a couple weeks away from competition, really.
We have our first meet November 11th.
We have a Coaches Clinic all that day for Nebraska Coaches Clinic and the coaches around the area.
Different states are coming in.
And then that night we wrestle in Nebraska Carney and Shadron State and the Nebraska Dules
that we started about five years ago.
Really just to help the state because the coaches clinic,
is, you know, 90% of that is about the Nebraska high school wrestling coaches and youth coaches.
And then that day is really a celebration of wrestlers from across our state.
And that wrestle collegiately.
How many programs show up at this thing?
Well, we usually have between 120 and 140 high school coaches there.
That's pretty good work, coach.
Yeah.
That's pretty good. When is that?
It's on that Thursday, November 11th.
And then we're wrestling that night. We wrestle Nebraska Carney and Shattering State.
So if it's, is that a Saturday? Is that a Thursday?
It's a Thursday. And then I'm assuming the coaching will be earlier in the day.
Yeah.
So that's something I can poke my nose in on.
Absolutely. Yeah, all day. All day, teaching and just sharing with coaches to help
them, you know, in their development as a coach and just different things that we try to add,
you know, whether it's on the nutritional side of things as we eat cake.
Yeah, as we eat cake.
Yeah, but in the middle thing and just from the nutritional standpoint, Noani, who works with
our team and volleyball, she's tremendous.
She's there.
Our trainers there offers a lot of prehab rather than just rehab.
It's about prehab, about preparing your body for competition, then just preventive stuff.
You know, he's tremendous.
Tyler Wheat is our trainer and our strength coach, John Pfeiffer.
He'll give his two bits about in-season and out-season weight training and weight training specifically for wrestling.
And then we do a couple sessions with our wrestling coaches.
Robert Kokesh is going to show and Treveld DeLogden.
Do you need wrestling dummies?
Do you need a couple of wrestling dummies?
Yeah, I think I see a guy right across here.
Come on, Nick.
Come on, Nick.
We might have to put Nick to the test, get that third grade experience back coming out in November 11th.
No, I wouldn't do that to it.
Nick's a good man.
Oh, that would be the best.
That would be the best.
Let's go up and down this roster and get folks excited.
about what's returning and what's coming.
Let's talk about the roster.
Yeah, you know, 125 through heavyweight.
We have five six-year seniors coming back.
Liam Cronin, who had a tremendous year last year,
and didn't have a great finish as far as the NCAA tournament,
but he had a tremendous season.
I think a couple of guys.
There's another young man.
and kind of had that similar, similar story, but really Liam's going to be our guy at 125.
And then 133, we probably have three guys, some very competitive there.
Tucker Shalming, who wrestled for us at the Big Ten championships last year,
and Alex Thompson, both those guys are going head to head there.
And then at 141, C.J. Reds, fifth year senior, six-year senior, I mean.
He's got to be on a mission.
Yeah, and he's fired up. He's doing great. It looks great. It's been training well, and he's really focused. And then 149, man, fans are going to be excited about. Not only Ridge Lovett, we have Javon Parrish there. And those guys are tight right now. So they're kind of going back and forth. Ridge probably has the upper hand right now, but that's, it's great. We have great depth there.
Wrestling works itself out.
Yeah, it does. It does. But those guys are both, they're both tough, and they both made big improvements. They had to.
Just sheer competition of the room. And then 157, Peyton Rob will be going 157 this year.
Okay. Pretty much more of his natural weight. He went 65 last year.
He had a great year for us. But Peyton Rob and Mikey Leverola, the next guy, I'm getting ready to talk about here in a little bit.
But those guys are leaving this next Monday for the University World Championships over in Serbia.
Wow.
So they're wrestling Team USA.
They're representing Team USA over in a world event here real soon.
So they're peaking and Peyton is looking great.
And him and Mikey will be going over U-23 World Championships.
Mikey and CJ were my two favorites watching last.
year.
Yeah.
It's just different energy about the young man.
Yes, for sure.
And then 165, Bubba Wilson will probably be the guy right now.
Okay.
He's a redshirt freshman.
Really like him from Manhattan, Kansas.
He's just a worker.
He's a goer.
Fans are going to love him.
He brings a lot of juice and he brings a lot of just never say die attitude.
He's a killer.
It's going to be really good.
Lab at 17.
Taylor Vins is probably having his best fall he's ever had another six-year guy.
A couple-time All-American Force, and he wants to go out with a bang.
And then Eric Schultz at 197 and Christian Lance at heavyweight right now.
So we have some guys.
You have some vets.
And my job is to elevate these guys.
You know, we know who's in front of us, Penn State and I.
Iowa. And so those, we, we know where the target is. We just got to hit it. And so,
but this year, you're going to have a crowd behind you. Yeah. Yeah, we are. Like, that's got to,
look, that's got to be a difference maker to know that that building is going to be filled. Husker fans
will be loud for you. You won't be doing it by yourself. Yeah, that's right. That's right.
Bringing the juice each and every time. I think that's going to be, that's a difference maker. You know,
it's kind of like Texas A&M with the 12th man.
We want the 11th man.
There we go.
There's 10 weight class.
We need the 11th man to step up because these guys are.
Put that on a shirt.
Put that on a shirt, coach.
That needs to be on a shirt here.
We can get that done.
Let them know.
I mean, season's right around the corner.
Tickets.
How do they get them?
Contact the ticket office there.
We've sold over 180, I believe, season ticket, front row.
So, you know, top of the line seats.
And then we've sold out on those and then just contact the ticket office.
So we've had a really good priority seat, whatever you want to say, a little kickoff.
And that's been sold out for about a month.
And so I think the reception is really good as far as, you know, they know our team.
I think people out there realize our team, but the novice fan,
that Husker fan that's saying,
you know what?
I'm going to that volleyball game.
Hey, that volleyball season ends about when we pick up full strength.
And so I think a good time to piggyback on top of that season
and watch a team that's, you know, vying for a championship.
One of the best in the country.
Yeah.
Like that's that national level.
Coach, look, man, if they haven't been moved,
to go get tickets and to want to be curious about what's going on here.
You're a legendary coach.
I giggle every time you're around because I couldn't follow everybody.
There are only certain coaches that I could follow.
You're one of them.
It means the world to see how you engage your people,
watching you with former wrestlers,
watching you with your young men.
Sir, I applaud you.
I really do.
You do a great job of being authentic.
And then you show up when called, which is pretty impressive in this day and age.
Thank you.
It's great.
It's great.
It's great to be a Oscar fan right now, you know?
Let's get a win Saturday, though.
Yeah, that's right.
Let's get a win Saturday.
You know, you sure you don't want to get on the sidelines and coach a little football?
Let's break that boilermaker, huh?
How about that?
Let's get that done.
Let's blow it up.
That's Mark Manning.
It's been a great show.
We'll thank Heather Brink for coming in as well.
Stay tuned, the Husker Hall of Famer, Jay Foreman.
That's three Husker Hall of Favorists.
And back to back to back, what do you want?
Show up.
Stay tuned, top of the hour, old school.
