You're listening to One-on-One with DP, sponsored by Mary Ellen's Food for the Soul,
on 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticket FM.com.
Welcome back to second segment of one-on-one, again, special episodes throughout the course of the month of January, which is mentoring month.
And we want to be specific in that, in that we're asking for your help.
We're asking for your involvement.
If you don't want to be a big or don't have time or you're already big,
get somebody that you know that would make a really good big.
Or, you know what, if you're already big or you don't have time,
maybe it's making a donation.
And there's a way to do that.
So, Sean, if somebody wants to make a donation to Big Brother, Big Sister, or Lincoln,
how would they do that?
Very easy by visiting our website and the address again is BBBBF.
lincoln.org and you just go to the page and there's a little button at the top to the right donate push that a few steps and there you are
what I'd like to do for anybody that will go to the website website and register at least to send the link and be inquisitive
if you do the registration tonight before the end of this hour I'll throw in a ticket t-shirt you just have to text me and tell
tell me, hey, you know what, I registered.
Just tell us, just send, put it on the text line, or you call in and say, you know what, I
registered, and I will give you a ticket t-shirt, and they're pretty, they're in high, high request.
So to do that, and then the very first person that registers, we'll also throw in a Beatrice Bakery
cake.
Oh, is that retroactive for six or seven years?
Right.
Like, we'll do it, and we'll let you, because we've got some vanilla rum here.
We've got chocolate fruit cake and we've got chocolate rum.
So we'll give you a choice.
But if you'll register and then just tell us that you register,
and then I want to do this thing.
So when we do our remotes,
we usually have like signed Husker jerseys that we will raffle off.
But we give the jersey away.
What I'm going to do, and you can give it away the night of the 26,
but people can register through you.
So, Sean, I'm going to hand this jersey to you, and it'll be a sign Jason Peter Husker's jersey.
Oh, wow.
And you guys can raffle it off, and you can raffle it off current bigs, families, donors, people that just want to buy tickets.
You set, you know, you can do a dollar on whatever you want to do.
And then you guys will just keep the raffle money.
How fantastic is that?
You guys keep the raffle money.
So I will hand you the jersey and you guys raffle it off.
and that'll be a chance to raise some more funds for Big Brother, Big Sister.
That's awesome.
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
So to do that.
Once again, we're here.
Steve's here.
Wyatt's here.
Sean is here.
All from Big Brother, Big Sister Lincoln.
And we're talking to you.
So, Wyatt, you teased us with this thing, right?
That he asked you a question about what you wanted to do and what you liked.
And you said Destiny.
Now, I'm old.
So I don't know anything about gaming.
I don't know anything.
you would think that I'm cool enough that I could, nope, don't know anything about it.
So I'd have been like Steve.
I'd have been like, what are you talking about?
So give us, describe destiny as a game for us.
I'll prepare for an education.
Here we go.
Come on.
Give it to me.
So what's the mission of the game?
Basically, you go around the universe, or, well, technically our solar system going
through the moon, Uranus, Saturn, Pluto.
some of the moons like a Titan
and there's Vex
there's
all kinds of different alien races
you got to blow up right
so what do you use to blow them up
plasma rifles
see like he
like he said it's so casual
plasma rifle
yeah yeah yeah it's basically a newer halo
right okay so a newer version of it
and how long have you been into it
oh yeah
seven years old.
Seven years old.
So it's a thing for you.
My dad used to play it a lot,
and every time we lived over a 11th and B,
me and him went into a little game room right next to the front door.
Yeah.
We had a little bowl chair,
you know,
the one that stands on the stand,
and if you tilt back,
it moves around.
Yeah.
So I used to just lay in that,
play the game all day.
Is Steve any good?
Be honest, no.
Just for those folks at home,
he kind of went the,
eh,
I mean, he's good, but he's not as good as you are.
No.
I mean, you know, sometimes you have to say it.
What else do you, what other games do you play?
I would say Forza Horizon 5 is just an average car game.
Okay, okay.
I would Call the Duty Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops 2, and Advanced Warfare.
And how much time, like a day or week do you put in this thing?
All together or just one game?
Yeah, like what do you do?
Like, how much time do you put into it?
so you're a gamer you're a gamer gamer like this is this is how you get down now do you is
twitch like kind of a place you don't go into that space so you don't want to go in and and like
be like super game i do not want to be money that's not that's a you know what that that
that really is a common thread i hear people say that i want to do this anonymously i don't want to
i don't want to i don't want to share your time with steve and that is a huge compliment i mean
I record clips and post them.
I just don't take credit for them.
I just get educational clips off of the games.
Well, that's pretty cool.
Now, are the other kids in your neighborhood or around you that you share this with?
Yeah.
So they know.
Okay.
They know.
Okay, here goes Wyatt.
We got one for it.
You've spent time at the Lincoln High CLC and the E-Sports Club, right?
Yeah, we played Rocket League.
Rocket League.
Car soccer.
It's basically.
Car soccer?
What is Car soccer?
soccer. You drive around a small car with a big soccer ball and you have a boost. You go around
collecting these little dots. You get more boost. See, this is what I need. I mean, I don't know what
he saw. This is why I have Harrison here because Harrison comes in from time and time and he'll break
stuff down for me. Like, if it's something old school, I can tell him. But when it comes to this stuff,
I have to rely on Harrison to go, yeah, DP, you're not. This is not your, this is not for you.
See, this is educational.
Now, when you and Steve get together, how do you, like, what's the perfect hour?
We talk, we eat.
Either we go out, hang out, walk around, mall, maybe.
If not that, we go to his house, go down in a basement, and play some games.
What would you say to friends of yours who, quite frankly, could benefit with a Steve in their life?
Like, what do you say to them?
Like, why are you doing this?
Like, there's a reason there's got to be a part.
positive thing that you get from it.
What would you tell them?
I mean, you meet a lot of great people throughout the time you're with them.
And the more you're with them, the more you'll see that you have in common, the more
you get to hang out.
Steve, when you, when you started this, it's service.
It's service.
But as you teased, you end up reaping benefit to this thing.
What has, what has Wyatt done for you?
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
You know, you can go through the whole cliche thing of this is something that you give.
It's, it's, it's, it's, it's, your, my role is to give, to provide.
But that, you know, that goes away pretty quick.
And you suddenly realize that you are getting as much as you are giving.
There are memories I have of us going to see movies or playing mini golf and me being really bad at mini golf.
Or riding, we ride the mope.
pack, right? I mean, there's all kinds of stuff that we've done.
I think the first movie we saw together was rampage.
Rampage, yes it was.
Yes, it was.
Based on a video game, go for it.
Right, right, but still.
Yeah.
And what you realize, you look up one day and you realize, I can't imagine my life
without this guy in my life.
I can't imagine my life without this little man.
And, you know, what felt like was going to be this sort of swooping in and being some
kind of savior to some kid, you realize how naive that is and you realize that, you know,
this is a two-way street. And that's what I would hope that folks out there who are maybe considering
doing this understand is that you get so much out of it. And it fills your heart up. It really does.
There have been days that, you know, when we get done, I'll say to Wyatt, you know, so what's,
what's going to be happening next week? And we'll talk a little bit about challenges coming up in the next week or some of the
expectations that we both have.
And then he started turning that back on me, man.
He started turning it back on me, like, well, what are your expectations for the week?
What are you going to be?
And I was like, good on you, brother.
You know, maybe he's hearing my voice in his head now, just like you said, right?
We're all the accumulation of the good people in our lives.
Yeah, and he, you know, he holds me accountable just as much as I do.
And that's, that's brotherhood right there.
I, I, there's a friend of mine who's a coach in Virginia, and he's a big brother.
And he says that the relationship turned pretty quickly that the little is now the big and the big.
Right?
He says because the planning, like, listen, okay, this is what we should do.
This is what I'd like to do.
This is what works for me.
It sounds familiar over here.
I have no knowledge.
Yeah.
Right?
I mean, the time that you spend together is special.
So you mentioned movies and touch.
you have that kind of recall
like movies that you've seen
like how many movies do you think you've seen again
seven seven
like that sort of recall
like I had even without asking the question
I knew that you knew exactly how many movies
that you've seen and what you know what they are
why is that what happens at these movies
to make it so memorable
I'm just hanging out with the person I like the most
that's cool
there's so much power in that
like i i i just
Steve i hope you
took all of that
yeah
yeah
because because and and
and and and why it just
from me to you
direct for you to recognize how powerful
you are
that how much you care
about him just hit
and the compliment you just gave him
and the power you just gave him
there is not an amount of money
in the world that could ever replace
what you just did.
I just want to thank you
and compliment you for that
because that shows me
that in this space
that is Big Brother, Big Sister,
and here in Lincoln,
that people are loving on each other
and you're one more
really good person in this space
and that's how we're going to get
more good people.
You're not alone in this.
And Steve, what you've done
in this space is pretty remarkable
because when you look at the young man
next to you. He is the accumulation of all of your actions with him, not for him, but with him.
And that's pretty cool. That's pretty cool. I'll ask you this. What is the most powerful thing?
When you think of Wyatt, what's the thing that resonates with you the most as a positive
caricature? Who is he? He's a young man with a big heart, a big heart, who is he? He's a young man with a big heart, who is
always has never met anyone who he couldn't be friends with,
who he's taught me to be less reserved around people.
When we were first matched up, some of those first gatherings,
he'd just talk to folks, and I'd be like, oh, no, don't do that.
And then pretty soon I realized, no, he's just being friendly.
He's happy-go-lucky.
He's taught me not to hold on to silly things
when you don't need to, stressed out about something at work or at home,
or in life,
you realize some of those things
just don't matter, you know,
when you got, you know,
the love of a young man
who, you know,
is there with you
and doing the things we like to do together,
whether it's playing PlayStation,
or whether it's riding our bikes,
or whether it's walking around the mall
and just talking about the week that we had, right?
it's just it's really special and he's a special young man
it's obvious to me
and people that mentor and people that find time
it's obvious in that space that it's reciprocal
and it lands in certain places that we don't even expect
Sean I want to say this to you
when we started talking about this project
and you started to ponder
who were the bigs and littles that you could bring on
that would share themselves in this space.
Now, they're going to help you recruit because anybody with a heart that hears this conversation
is going to feel a tug and a pull into this space, right?
Why did you choose Wyatt and Steve?
Well, I'm just familiar with their relationship.
And I, you know, I said this earlier.
I happened to know Steve from past life.
So I knew a little bit about their relationship.
and it just sounds like they got a cool thing going on.
And I just thought, hey, you asked for an elevator speech for me earlier.
And I was like, you know, this is it.
It's hard to just do the 30-second spiel.
It's these experiences, these stories that are shared that do the thing.
Like, I mean, this is what, this is, to your point, Derek, this should be tugged on the heartstrings.
This should get us to be thinking about how can I become a mentor?
How can I give back?
How can I make a difference with a young person?
And that young person will make a huge different in our life, too.
But, but yeah, I just knew a little bit about their relationship.
I thought it was really special.
this is the possibility.
There's many other matches
that have these really wonderful
relationships.
And I'm just trying to do
my best to create a space here for them
to share their experiences.
This is why I do what I do.
I get to hear these stories and I get to be a part
of what they're up to.
Pretty exceptional across the board, also from the text line.
Austin had Big Brothers, Big Sisters
on relationships matter.
And it's always bigger.
than the final score and it shows up.
Sean is a rock star and Wyatt,
you are all that and some.
He goes,
but he said he's,
this is Peter Ferguson with Lincoln Public Schools.
He's a cowboy fan.
He said he'll get you a sweatshirt.
Look,
he's tried that with me too.
And then just,
you know,
and if Peter Ferguson is out there
talking about the good and you,
go Philadelphia Eagles.
Yeah, get him.
Get him. Get him.
Get him.
We'll throw it the break.
We'll come back.
We'll close out this hour.
with Wyatt, Steve, and Sean here on 937.2.
