Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome back. We're trying. We're trying to get answers. Trying to fix things. Block, did you get a chance to look at any of that film? I've been watching a little bit. I pointed out of the thing, did not? Did not?
Starting point is 00:00:17 Like the film study, there should be the aha moment that lets you know, oh, my goodness, this is where we went. But there's also the other moment where you exhale and go, This is worse than we thought. This is not. I'm just, it's never good to see defensive linemen under the pile. And it's worse when it's a pile of one offensive line. When it's one offensive lineman, like pancakes are a thing.
Starting point is 00:00:50 You never want to be the receiver of pancakes. You never want to be on the receiving it. And I can't, I look forward today where you, you asked Adam Carrecker, how he would do against this officer. Oh. Yeah. Yeah. Like, and you can ask, like, Cariker at today's age. Whether he could, you know, he would, he would just be throwing people out the club.
Starting point is 00:01:22 He would be throwing people out of the club. That's Anthony Smith this past week. Got two, two and a half sacks against Nebraska. He had like six last year. I mean, you get a play Nebraska. That's a chance to move up draft like Browns. That is your, that is your, that is your, that is your combine tape. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:39 That is the stuff that with, with, when Mortensen's talking about, where they're literally going through it, they go, yeah, here's, here's, here's, here's a guy against Nebraska. You know, and it's the thing. I, so again, I, I was having the conversation with. with Jeff Bossack of the Hogs fame. And he would talk about that in the old NFC East, again, he's facing Reggie White, Randy White, Jim Bert.
Starting point is 00:02:12 So six of his, six of his starts against three, two, three monsters. And he said, but he simplified it. Yes, next to him on one side is Mark May. who on any other line would be the best offensive lineman on, but on that team, right? Or maybe Riley McKenzie, who on any other team, or maybe Ray Brown, who then went on to play, you know, 13 years. On the other side, one of the greatest offensive linemen to ever do it, Rush Grant.
Starting point is 00:02:42 And next to him, another one of the greatest offensive line ever do in Joe Jacob. But what he said was he figured out as the perennial undersized center in the national football league, He played at 250, 255 pounds. His job, he figured out that I need to beat playside arm. That's it. He goes, I didn't have to get into the numbers. I didn't have to get to the knees. I needed to win whatever side of the ball, point of attack we were going to go to.
Starting point is 00:03:16 If I beat that inside arm, it was virtually impossible for that defensive lineman to one hand, grab and tackle John Riggins. He goes, and if that hand got consistently free, the other hand, then he would simply tell Russ Grimm, hey, Russ, a needle will help with that, with that hand. And Russ Grimmer go, okay, well, in most cases, there's nobody over Russ's head. Right? Because there's Lawrence Taylor or Ed Too Tall Jones or Harvey Martin outside that Jacoby's
Starting point is 00:03:49 dealing with, right? Russ Grimm's like, sure, pal, I got you. give me an arm. Give me an arm. And then sometimes Ricko would just go, hey, nah, bro, don't worry about that arm. Go get a linebacker. That arm ain't getting me.
Starting point is 00:04:07 That a one-handed man is not tackling, tackling me. So there are ways in the conversations of how this is done. Dave Butts would always talk about, and he was a massive human being, 335 pounds, right? he would say I never wanted my sideline to see the name on the back of my jersey.
Starting point is 00:04:32 He never wanted to turn towards the sideline. He says if I'm massive and I take up the space in the middle of the field, you have to choose a lane. You have to choose a lane. And in most cases,
Starting point is 00:04:49 I'm one step away from being in that lane. The simplicity of playing solid offensive and defensive line gets overcomplicated by talent and all the other things, schemes and all those other things. But leverage, balance, smart eyes, seeing, actually seeing where the ball is, actually seeing traffic. And in some cases, you're just looking for the opposing team's hat, right? Don't go looking for work.
Starting point is 00:05:25 Work is coming. So if I've established the line of scrimmage as a defensive lineman with the ability to get from gap A to gap B with a step and have leverage, I've done my job. And then if I'm looking for an opposing hat, well, Bach, if a Northwestern hat steps into an open hole, I have business.
Starting point is 00:05:48 I have business. And if no hats from the opposing team are coming my way, I've done my job. I've done my job. And at no point is his job being on the receiving end of the pancake. Because it means you did a whole bunch of things wrong. A whole bunch of things wrong. Not a thing wrong.
Starting point is 00:06:14 You did a bunch of things wrong. So friends and family for grins and giggles. Go and pull up the highlight, the full highlight real of, and there's one that's like 20 minutes. And just look at the first 10 place, 10 place all the time. And don't look at, don't look at the skill position, guys. Don't do that. Don't do that.
Starting point is 00:06:37 Smarting your eyes up. Do not look at the distraction. Don't do it. It's the Penn and Teller magic trick. Look over here, Bach. All the while, you're getting robbed over here. No, forget about the bells and whistles. Don't pay attention to the divas.
Starting point is 00:06:58 pay attention to the monsters. Don't pay attention to Takerbell. Pay attention to the lockness monster sitting in the middle lurking. Pay attention to with his big foot. You can pay, hey, Bach, you're in the forest.
Starting point is 00:07:21 The birds are pretty. They're chirping. Aww. But here comes Bigfoot. Here comes a rhino. Here comes to a hippopotamus. Here comes a bear. who should you be paying attention to?
Starting point is 00:07:33 Who's going to tell you the state of the, of the forest, Bach? The large animal. You can look, Nebraska is a big boy state. It's a big boy football program. It's wonderful to have playmakers and, and I get it. But every playmaker here will tell you that their, their success was directly affected by the quality of the line play. in front of them or inside of it.
Starting point is 00:08:04 Every single one. Every single one. From the text line, we'll get to. See, Munger says, we don't have the offensive line to be the offense we want to be, and we don't have the defensive line to be the defense we want to be. So I feel like we're trying to play as a team. That being said, Dana can't pick the plays he want and Butler can't pick the plays he wants. That is, if we're, if, if, if, if that's my class and that's the report,
Starting point is 00:08:32 that I can't teach Johnny what I want to teach him because he either refuses to learn or can't learn. I'm passing out a lot of Fs. Are da Bach? There's going to be some repeat performers. And that would be developing their mind, development, maybe? We're going to, hey, man.
Starting point is 00:08:58 Mr. Pearson's not really, not really reaching the kids. not really reaching them. But hey, but coach, you've been giving them Bs. Like before last week, you had 1A, 3Bs, a C plus. Maybe you had 2 A's and 2. 2 A's, 3Bs, is that, right? 2 A's 3Bs? That first D?
Starting point is 00:09:29 because you think it was a tough test. Michigan was a tough test, right? Yeah. Right, tough test. Not that it shouldn't be because you teach what you teach. Right? Show your work. Show you work.
Starting point is 00:09:43 If you showed your work and you just missed because you miscalculated in your work, I'm not going to fail you if you had the right principle. If you had, you were using the right skills and the right solutions. But if you were drawn and you just, oh, you missed something here. Okay. But if you don't show the word, and we asked you the capital of Nebraska, and you said, Washington, D.C. Oh, boy.
Starting point is 00:10:16 We got, we got to do some, we got to do some things, Bach. We got to do some things. Heselberg says this off of O-Line's identity is a brown paper bag that carries the other team sack lunch. say what you say. Listen. And here's the thing. As athletes and coaches,
Starting point is 00:10:36 you can listen or not listen to what fans say. But you control the narrative. If the result is what you as an offensive line coach or player desire, then what people say about it doesn't matter. But if you're not getting the desired result, then you open yourself to the conversation. Like you open yourself to what people say. Isaac says this misdirection and hope the defender has two left feet, falls down, there's two.
Starting point is 00:11:09 There's always hope. Go be great. But this is, like, I'm not mad at a fan for being frustrated. The rule that I was taught in college is, it's my job to ask the question, it's not my fault if you don't like your answer to it. So if you ask the question about the identity of this Nebraska offensive line, defensive line, front seven, run game, passing game, pass pro, whatever it is, if the answer that comes back doesn't suit you,
Starting point is 00:11:47 then get to work and change the answer. But you can't just say, wrong, and keep it moving. That's not what we're here to do. Nebraska's biggest issue is Nebraska. Whether it be in concept, idea, development, skill, execution, simplicity. So if you tell me which one of those things you need to fix first and what the priority is, right? Because at this point in week eight, you can't fix town.
Starting point is 00:12:21 Right? You can't. You got what you got. These are the groceries you bought. Now you can say, hey, for the record, next year, buy groceries at Whole Foods. Not at the dollar store. Just, I know you need some food, but you can't play big time football and ramen noodles. Chop better.
Starting point is 00:12:49 Even the greatest cuisine chef has difficulty making a high-quality meal out of ramen noodles in the bag. We'll close it out, set up Adam Cariker, blocking the black shirt, and then old school in a long day here at the ticket. Watch live on Facebook, YouTube, or Twitch.
