It's time to go one-on-one with D.P.
Coming at you live from the Cople Chevrolet GMC Studios.
Here is your host, Derek Pearson.
Brought you by Mary Ellen's Food for the Soul on 93-7-the-ticket and the-ticketfm.com.
Happy humpday, Wednesday, Lincoln, Nebraska,
93-7 is the ticket.
BP with you, Rico, sitting in.
One-on-one.
Brought to you by the folks from Mary Ellen's Food for the Soul.
Thank you very much, Charles Phillips.
I'm going to have to stop by and see you this week.
He's also sponsored the student athletes who do shows here.
He's set up a place where they can come and get a plate.
Well done.
Rico, I'll give you the particulars on how you can go get a plate.
Oh.
It's been set up.
Well, all righty then.
It's been set up, I know.
It's like a once a week thing.
I know that was news for you, right?
Because, sir, that is.
That was news for you.
I got the text while I was in Vegas.
If you want the best spokesperson around, just give me food.
That's what it is.
So, and then as well, the folks from Canopy Street Market, Dan Swanson and the gang for looking us up,
they have set up the world's greatest domestic beer challenge.
We're going to do a taste test for domestic beer.
When are we going to do that?
When do you want to do that?
That is a great question.
I will have to talk to my co-host and you and Mark to see when we are all here, because really it's us four that need to figure this out.
Yeah, so we'll do that.
Eight different kinds of beer?
Is that?
Eight, nine.
Nine.
Because there's some two tall boys.
Nine, nine.
And then if I can tell you folks this, mark this down that every Tuesday, every Tuesday, every Tuesday.
there for lunch at Canopy Street Market.
They do street tacos for a buck 25.
Interesting.
You get hard shell soft, whatever you want.
Buck 25.
Every Tuesday.
Taco Tuesdays.
Taco.
Do it.
And then we'll get Charles Phillips to call us and tell us what the features are at Mary Ellen's
Food for the Soul.
So we can get on that.
It's been an interesting...
The features are good.
Yeah, they're so good.
That's what the features are.
they're so good.
That is the right explanation.
I'm going to get heavy before I get,
before I get light.
Because I think it's just a reminder.
Had a book release a few weeks ago.
And prior to that book release,
I had a friend from high school,
actually from junior high and high school,
known him since we were 12 years old,
who lived in Missouri.
and his friends had discovered 93-7 ticket and said,
hey, we're listening, and this guy says he's from your hometown.
Do you know him?
And he goes, yeah, I didn't know he was in Nebraska.
And he said, yeah, we play football together.
We played basketball together.
And he's like, yeah, I downloaded the app and we're following you and we're listening.
He goes, I'm really proud of you.
um was a retired retired paramedic and he had folks there in missouri you know listening to the ticket
and when the book release came out sent out a notice i sent out an invite to the event and he says
yeah i'll be at the event um congratulations and after the book release uh he sent me a message
saying bro i'm so proud of you know i can't wait to order the book
The book was about our high school coach, Del Nourwood.
And he said, okay, I want to read the book.
I said, well, I can get you a digital copy right away.
Right away, so you can read it and you'll know what it is.
So I sent him to a digital copy, and he read it, and he shared it with his wife.
And he said, he actually called and said, I'm so proud of you.
This is amazing what you've done.
He goes, this made my day.
And this was on June 4th, Saturday, June 4th.
And phone call probably happened at 2 o'clock after I'd received a message from him around 10 o'clock that morning.
And then life happens and you get busy, right?
But I got notice this weekend of a posting from his wife saying that my dear friend, Kevin, had passed away.
And, you know, the usual questions.
I didn't want to be rude or intrusive, but I'm like, wait a minute.
Like, I just talked to him like a month ago.
And she said, yes, thank you for doing that, because he talked to you and he passed away
like a couple hours late at home.
Now, saying all that's to tell you, one, we get caught up in being dismissive to
relationships and communicating with people.
Just take, listen, I posted yesterday that I'm,
my job today is to love everybody, no matter what.
And that was the impetus for it, because this is a dude I've known for more of my life
than without.
And I'm glad that I took the time.
Like he thanked me for, you know, I know you're busy today, but you answer.
the call like your friend calls you answer the phone but I didn't know what he was going
through um they expected him to still be here he expected to still be here I expected to still be here
today he's not here I'm just going to say this when somebody calls you answer the phone
and somebody texts you respond especially if they matter to you
and even if they don't.
Because Kevin, and again, goodhearted dude,
strong, we didn't know,
we didn't know, as I say, you never know
what somebody's going through.
But in that, like I hadn't heard from him since that day,
and the curiosity would happen.
Like I would have, it would have come around again, right?
He would have posted something on Facebook
or on social media and I would have,
hey, buddy, you know.
how you doing but I never got it I never got that next notification and his wife posted on his account
and in his name that we have unfortunately lost Kevin who passed away in his sleep at home
but I just wanted to say it Kevin buddy and to the friends in Missouri who are listening
thank you guys for sitting with us every day.
Thank you.
Thank you for bringing Kevin back into this space for me.
And thank you, Kevin, for your friendship.
Seriously kind, dude.
So, again, when people reach out today, just reach out.
That was part of why I wasn't going to come in today,
because I need to process.
But I'm here.
And we'll get through and we'll have some fun.
we will have some fun today
because Kevin would have smacked me
on the back of the head
and said
what do you what are you
pouting about
we were we were friends
for 45 years
that's a whole lot of
laughter
a lot of years
it's a lot of laughter a lot of joking
but to his wife
love you
thank you
um
Vegas again
Vegas was exceptional
The Hall of Fame event, the induction ceremony, was spectacular.
It looked like a blast.
You were taking pictures with all kinds of people.
I can't even imagine what those conversations would have been like.
I'm a child.
What?
I'm a child.
I'm a grown man, baby.
I'm sitting in.
So when we get to the event, I get there.
And it's a red carpet, but it's inside the Timo War.
area. Right. So it's an upper level floor, but they've got the whole backdrop. They've got the
red carpet. They've got, you know, the media scrum for you to find in your place. And then
for some, for credentials, some credentialed folks, you have a spot on the red carpet where when
people come to you, they'll stop and talk to you. And I didn't really gather that. Right. Like I didn't
really pay attention to it. I'm like, oh,
there's a scrum, just getting the scrum.
And in it, we run into
Drew Dober. Drew Dober.
His mom lives in Omaha.
Dober is
man,
if the UFC got this right,
Drew Dober would be one of the most
known people in the sport.
I can say this freely.
I'm cool with who I am as a man.
That's a good looking dude.
Drew Dober is a good looking dude.
Like, he's the prototype.
Okay.
Perfect body type, perfect face, chisel, the whole shabangy bang, and bang.
And he's on the red carpet as I walk in and walk up.
And we connect and it's like, hey, man, like he knew.
And I was like, oh, okay.
Well, because there's a connect, there's a group of Nebraska fighters who are,
all doing exceptionally well.
Listen, for a state Nebraska size to have six or seven fighters from Nebraska
amongst the 500 fighter contracts that exist in the UFC,
it's impressive.
Right?
Mind you that the number one pound per pound fighter in the entire world is from Nebraska
Carney.
Pretty cool.
Pretty cool.
The pound for pound, let me say it again for.
see, make sure you hear it.
The pound, the number one pound for pound fighter in the entire world wrestled at Nebraska
Carnie.
It was a national champion for Nebraska Carning.
Why are there not parades for this guy?
They, down there, they talk about him all the time.
They have, you know, he's got his picture on the wall.
His coach is now the athletic director down there.
Amazing.
Amazing.
And of course, Dober, he's like, listen, my mom yells at me all the time.
Like, why aren't you on air?
And I'm like, well, let's fix that.
Let's fix that.
And we also have cameras now so you can show off that beautiful mug of his.
Oh, he's like, it's ridiculous.
It's not even fair how good looking is.
Not only is he good looking, but he could punch your lights out.
Well, that part too.
That part two, right?
So we're talking to Dover and he's like, I'm like, look, bro, I need you on air.
He goes, let's do it.
Dober's got, he's fighting on a big card, August 20th, August 20th, August 20th in Salt Lake City.
So of course, immediately I'm like, of course, yeah, yeah, whatever.
Yeah, got to do that.
August 20th.
So the week before the Huskers go to Ireland, I'm going to go to Salt Lake City because also on that card, also on that card.
Anthony Lionheart Smith
Oh yeah sure whatever
No big deal
Another fighter from Nebraska
I'm looking up Drew Dober right now
He's a good looking dude
You're right
Like it's not even fair
Like you go to his social media
And it's him
Like
He could be a fashion model
He's got a brown belt in Brazilian jiu jiu juts
Oh that part
Black belt in taekwondo
Oh that part
Cool
Right I mean you've got all these dudes
oh, by the way, Derek Minner
from Nebraska City.
Whatever.
Right?
I mean, that's our dude.
That's our guy.
Now, Uzman, again,
Usman's the number one pound-for-pound fighter
in the entire world.
Every UFC fighter is aspiring to be
like the kid who wrestled at Nebraska cart.
Throw your lips.
Right?
I think they had him back for they had like a wrestling event,
not a tournament, like a, it might have been a tournament,
but it was an event to like teach people wrestling and bring people.
I think they had him back or they tried to have him back.
One of those is true.
So, and there's more, more guys from Carney that wrestled there that are going into mixed martial arts
that are just, you know, waiting for their turn to make it big.
It's just wrap your brain around that,
that there are 500 UFC contracts for male fighters currently,
active contracts, 500.
Six of them are from Nebraska, right?
Well, Faisal says this and it's true.
Nebraska currently has, you ready for this?
Nebraska has the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.
That's also true.
and the best pound-for-pound fighter in mixed martial arts.
We stood in a line of fighters in media.
John Ankin, who does the play-by-play.
And I asked him, I said, what's going on in Nebraska?
And he goes, we're dying to figure that out.
because one, it's a wrestler state, it's a combat sports state.
But to be able to produce that level of talent in a short space in a short amount of time is beyond,
there's no analytic for it.
But what's happening in Nebraska when it comes to MMA is off the charts.
As a matter of fact,
Uzman's older brother is fighting next week for the ultimate fighter everywhere.
wait.
No big deal.
Contract.
Jeez.
Right.
I mean, across the board,
for everything that's happening in this
space and to be at the
biggest UFC event of the
year and have
Anthony Smith
on the host panel
in the pre-post-fight free SPN.
That's a Nebraska kid.
There's a Nebraska kid
who's,
at the top of the media
when it comes to the UFC
sitting on ESPN
every week providing commentary
and insight.
Nebraska, the fighting state.
Look.
We're no longer the Cornhusker state.
We're the fighting state.
To be in the space, right?
And have James Krause,
who is the manager of the year,
the trainer of the year,
right?
Who has four fighters himself
just from Nebraska to he trains.
And Kraus,
is doing it better than anybody who's doing it.
Talking about Nebraska and going, listen,
I'm always looking for dues from there.
Because there's a certain grittiness that's going to be applied to it.
Right?
There's a certain willingness.
And they're willing to fight in spaces to get to the greater achievement.
Right?
These local undercards, right?
When you get the card at PBA, march yourself over there.
When you get the local card up in Omaha,
Down in Omaha, go!
What Nebraska is producing in huge volume are excellent mixed martial artists.
And I'm just telling you the rest of the country and the rest of the world is watching Nebraska when it comes to this sport.
Like I said, Drew Dober, Dober's like, he's like, look, man, I'm going to get through this training camp.
and then I'm coming.
Derek Minter was like, listen,
he was,
Derek Minner was supposed to be on the same card with Kyle Nelson,
but he got concussed in training, right,
and had to push back.
But Miner's been in studio four times,
and it's the push.
Yep.
Right, it's the push, right?
It's going to happen.
So imagine with Miner and Smith and now Dober
and we'll keep adding to Usman's on,
the list of guys
like we need to get.
Hammond beats corrected me. He was back for a banquet
for his teammate from you and K
who was in the UFC
Ellenberger. Ellenberger.
Right. Right.
Was almost never able to fight because of a rare
blood disorder. I mean, we talk about that, right?
Number one boxer.
Number one of MMMA guy
and then one of the great analysts
in the entire world.
Pretty good state for fighters.
It was very
cool. It was very cool.
to be in that space over
three or four days. We,
Beck and I went to,
in the arena, they had
a space for VIP
and a VIP experience. And if you
have never done it, UFC, you need to go
do it. Because
so,
and I have to tell, it's two sides
to the story. One, that you,
a media there.
So they gave full credentials
for that. And because
of the engagement and people
speaking so kindly of Nebraska.
They said, listen, you're invited
to every event we hold.
Okay.
And I'm like, uh, okay, victory dance.
I went out, ran outside, did the Willie Mays Hayes.
Hey, I made the team dance.
As you should.
Right.
And then people are looking at you in the street and they're throwing your coins
because they're not to her a performer.
Right.
Like they want to know what it was.
And then and then there was Forrest Griffin.
Hall of Fame.
Rico, I'm going to tell the story of Forrest Griffin.
