It's time to go one-on-one with D.P.
Coming at you live from the couple Chevrolet GMC Studios.
Here is your host, Derek Pearson, presented by Beatrice Bakery,
on 93-7 The Ticket and The Ticket FM.com.
Let's bring it in on a Wednesday.
Appreciate you guys hanging out with us,
and staying tuned.
We've got some Huskers in to talk about life.
Life as a Husker.
in today's athletic department.
It's a little bit different.
402, 464, 5668, Sartarhammed, and Tech sign, a Honda League and Hotline,
Facebook, YouTube, Twitch, and the Twitter for live streaming.
You can see what's going on in studio and be a part of what we're doing.
And thank the folks to be out of the bakery for doing what they do.
Folks from Canopy Street Market for always stepping up when we need and when we ask.
Greatly appreciate it along the way.
I wanted to bring in some Huskers today to kind of detail who they are and what they're doing in June.
Because June's different for each athlete.
And in this particular case, we have some folks who hang out with us from week to week.
I have to be careful not to call her one of my favorites, but she thinks she is anyway.
So that she thinks she is anyway.
She's a part.
She's a host of the Deep End Monday nights here on 937.
Ticket from Husker Swimming and Diving.
Let's bring in Reagan, Hensie.
Reagan, what's happening?
What is up?
What's up?
How are you?
I'm pretty good.
How are you?
I'm good.
What'd you do Memorial Weekend?
What'd you do?
The team went to Branched Oak and we just hung out.
What's Branch Oak?
Talk to me.
It's like a little.
lake area.
Okay.
It was just very windy on one day.
So we were like kind of trying to block the sand blowing in our faces.
Okay.
And no work, no training?
No, my coach was out of town, so I had the weekend off.
I want to provide people some backstory.
So Reagan is from Conroe, Texas.
And I know her school, I know her people, I know her coaches, I know her teachers.
I want folks to know your parents, though, because I find them to be interesting.
And again, they produced you, so job well done.
Let's talk about mom and dad.
Well, my dad is the associate athletic director at Sam Houston State University.
So he kind of knows the college world, or at least college athletics.
And then my mom played basketball at Sam Houston State University, and then she coached
at Conroe High School where I went to school for a little while,
and now she's at Oak Ridge High School as the head girls basketball coach.
So she knows her.
She knows her.
Did you ever kind of dive into basketball?
Do you ever consider it?
Oh, yeah.
My dad was a cross-country and track runner at Texas A&M.
So I ran and I did basketball for most of my life.
Like I want to just, right?
Like I knew Rico would get into this because,
This is why you have the conversation.
Texas A&M, Tracking Field is just different.
That is amazing.
Yeah.
I'm just like slightly jealous.
It's funny.
Right, right.
As a hurdler, you know, a college hurdler.
It's a thing, right?
I want folks to know this because the journeys to Lincoln are often as spectacular
as what happens after.
And great people make great people.
Great coaches make great people.
great people make great coaches.
So she's got the double dip and then the product comes out.
And I'll tell you folks that as one of two Nebraska diversers.
Yes.
Right.
At the moment.
Right at the moment.
She's not just limited to being a diver.
Here's why.
I just, so she invited me.
She was telling me the story that, well, she's, yeah, she's, she's in his choir.
and, you know, she had to audition for the, for, for the solo.
And I'm like, okay.
All right.
She goes, well, would you mind coming to, to see me perform?
And I went, sure.
Like, I'll, you know, you show up for us.
We'll show up for you.
And I'm sitting in the back.
And I'm going, what is going on?
Who is that?
I remember you coming in the day after and you were just like, or however many days
after.
and you're like, so Reagan can sing.
And I was like, okay?
And he goes, no, no, no, you don't understand.
S-A-N-G.
Like, like, all capital.
And I was like, oh, any, any, you know,
pulled up a video and he shot and I go, oh, oh, okay.
And you saw her, I don't know if you folks were on the video stream
and if you saw her reaction to us playing this.
Why does it bother you so much?
I hate listening to myself saying.
I absolutely hate it.
I hate it. I have to do it every week for my class, but I absolutely hate it.
That's just remarkable. And so at some point, we're going to pair you with Mark
Unweiler, who considers himself a bit of a singer. Mark can sing. Okay. And we have some projects,
the things you're going to have some fun with. So stuff we're going to have some fun with. Well,
you're with us now. You're family now. So there's stuff for us to do. So when did you know
that as a diver, you were elite?
Oh, man.
I still don't consider myself elite.
You're doing the thing.
I'm doing the thing, but I still don't consider myself an elite diver.
Like, it never, it hasn't really processed.
Because, like, my goal as a kid was, I don't know, I might be one of the few, but my goal was, like, yeah, watching the Olympics is cool, but, like, I just want to be a D1 athlete.
Like, that sounds cooler to me.
So like now that I'm actually here, it's like, I don't think it's still processed, even though I'm three years in.
I'm going to say, stop doing that to yourself.
Doing what?
Stop minimizing yourself.
It doesn't suit you.
You're a damn superhero.
Like you're sort of, you look, you're diving to Vision 1 and you sing like a siren.
That's not normal.
Neither of those is normal.
Okay.
So just there. We've also been joined. And have we made it official? Have we officially welcomed you to the 93-7-ticket family?
I think so.
Okay. Well, we need to make the announcement then because so Audrey graduated and she's getting married and moving along and we needed some additional talent in the space.
Yeah.
And you deliver it to us. There are rare people that you know right off the back.
that they have leadership skills
and they have the energy and the aura.
Let's bring in Madison.
Madison,
is it, you pronounce your last name,
Ronquilo?
Quilio.
Ronquilio.
Yes.
Okay.
And I still say,
this family,
because they pronounce it Ronquilio.
A little,
there's a little different,
yeah,
from the very same space.
Courtesy,
where's home?
California.
What part?
It's called Tracy in the Central Valley.
considered more north, but if you look at the shape of the state, it's kind of like more in the middle, I guess, directly east of San Francisco.
So that explains your chill, but it also, it also explains, right? Because Madison has a definite chill. And it, it takes a lot to do what you do and do it and do it at the level that you do it. She's also team captain, which speaks volumes to that with the chill. Why is she a captain? Why? Reagan, I'll ask you, why, Mad.
Madison is a captain. She just exudes everything you want in a captain. Which is what? How would you
describe her? Leadership. She's not, she's not afraid to like, if somebody's acting up, not necessarily
acting up, but like if somebody's kind of slacking off at practice, she's not afraid to be like, hey,
like, I know this is an individual sport at the end of the day, but we are a team. And we all need
to work together to become the best team that we can be. How did you get?
here, Madison. And I wanted to, I wanted, this is why I wanted you guys in the 10 o'clock hour,
because sometimes it's a different audience to the people who listen at night. Right.
So some people may not know your story, and this is a good opportunity for them to get to
know both of you a little bit better because you're extremely talented and very interesting.
So I want to do, so how do you get here? How do you end up in Lincoln from Tracy, California?
Well, I, it almost seems like a hard question.
Because it was just, it's just, there's a lot to it.
Yeah, it's such a complicated story.
I mean, I, if we start from the very beginning, I started swimming when I was A at this little city club, city team.
City summer rec league team.
It was called the Tracy Triens.
Everyone just took it so seriously.
And I was like, oh man, okay, let's go.
It's time to race.
And then after a while, I kind of realized like, oh, maybe I can kind of swim.
Like, it's pretty cool.
So then I went over to a club team in the same city, and then that's when we really started taking it seriously practicing year-round every day, going to like some bigger meets.
Granted, it was a smaller team.
So there were times where, like, I would travel and it would just be me and my coach hanging out on the pool deck for like eight hours straight.
So.
And I think that's where I kind of learned to be able to like ask the questions, like the really detailed questions about like stroke and like race strategy and just things that you wouldn't normally get exposed to until you get.
get to college because a lot of times club teams are so big you don't really get that one-on-one
coaching with a coach so yeah and then from there that's when the recruiting process started
happening and just getting exposed to different programs around the country when did when did the first
big name school reach out to you yeah so the official recruiting date that at the time was
your the summer, but going into your senior year on July 1st.
And funny story, I remember it was July 1st and everyone kept telling you,
all right, keep your phone on, stay awake, like sit next to your phone, make sure your ringer's
up.
And I fell asleep and I missed the first phone call.
So I woke up to a voicemail from the coach at the University of Pacific.
And I was like, oh my gosh, I can't believe I just missed my first call.
But yeah.
So anyway, after that, it just got it.
accelerated so quickly because from there you go to talking to coaches and trying to build a
relationship with them as much as you can over the phone and then also figuring out your short list
of what schools you want to visit because you only get five official visits and then of course you
could have as many unofficial visits as you want to take but those aren't as fun yeah there's a
difference there's a difference right yes that you're able to bring your family and
on their dime, on the school's dime,
rather than you guys doing it yourself.
Now, so how quickly and how deep did this go?
How many schools would you say Division I schools?
I probably had like 10 on my list,
and then I actually took all five trips.
So where'd you go?
I went to, okay, so I went to Akron,
okay.
University of Idaho, Boise State.
oh gosh
that seems like such a long time ago
oh I had one to
University of Miami in Ohio
but then I canceled it because it was homecoming
week and I was like I want to go to homecoming
it's just fantastic to me right
that you guys go through
these are the moments that you
this is the path
and then when it happens you go
eh
Well, because also at that point, too, I'd already taken my trip to Boise State.
And after that trip, I was like, this is where I want to go.
Like, this is such a cool place.
This is it.
And so then, yeah.
And then your commitment to Nebraska, you hadn't been here.
No, I had never seen a campus.
I honestly couldn't even tell you what city I was going to.
My dad booked the flight and I was like, all right, time to get on a plane.
Go to Nebraska.
I don't know where in Nebraska, but I'm going there.
That's fantastic.
So Reagan, I mean, you're recruiting, how did that go?
When did it start for you?
Was it similar story?
Yeah, my year was the last year before they changed it, because now it's junior year, right?
The summer before your junior year.
But mine was the summer before my senior year.
And my first call was actually from the University of Cincinnati.
And I was actually on a cruise.
Like, I was sitting in the buffet, like shoving my face and chocolate cake.
And I was getting a phone call and I was like, hello?
But yeah, like she said, it escalates very quickly.
And I had all five of my visits.
And my dad, like I said, is in college athletics.
And he was like, don't fall in love with your first visit.
And then I get off the plane from Nebraska.
And my dad came with me.
And he was like, so I have a confession.
And I was like, what's up?
And he was like, so I told you not to fall in love with your first visit,
but I think I fell in love with your first visit.
And I was like, okay.
Way to go, dad.
Job all done.
Job all done.
So through this, Reagan, Henzy and Madison Run Kiliio, and we'll keep trying to get it right over the course because we have you now.
So I have time to get it together.
From Nebraska Swim and Dive, and I think the big part for me is that you as teammates, you do different events, but somehow stay connected.
And it's by choice, it seems purposeful that you guys actually like each other.
And in fact, you're roommates.
certainly helps, but talk about the academic sides of it because you're both doing
exceptional things away from your athletic endeavor. Madison, let's start with you.
You're doing a lot. Yeah. I actually just came from a test because now it felt like I feel
bad. I'm like, we didn't mean to take her away from her first thing first. Sorry about that.
Oh, no, no, no words. It's just an adams.
It's fine.
It's just anatomy.
Okay, so Rico doesn't know the story about your friend that lives in the basement with you.
Oh.
Bill.
Yes.
First off, hold on.
Wait a minute.
I was even confused.
Wait a minute.
As a Hispanic, I am extremely just, just, what's the word I'm looking for?
I'm scared of ghosts.
So, basement friend, what?
Baseman friend, yes.
He actually lives in the little room.
that also has the furnace and the air filters.
This is perfect. Yeah, okay.
Yeah, he has his own little stand.
His name is Bill.
Okay.
Bill is a skeleton.
Bill's the skeleton.
Okay, we're fine then.
All right, I just heard basement friend,
and I immediately just thought that wherever you live is haunted,
and I was like, cool.
That's, okay, whatever.
Well, I mean, Bill brought friends, I'm sure.
Like, Bill's got a story.
So how did you get Bill?
Bill.
Okay, so this past semester I took anatomy and I told my parents, I was like, hey, yo, I'm taking anatomy.
And then my dad proceeds to go look for a skeleton to buy just so like I could practice with.
And first of all, I didn't realize how much skeletons cost.
Like, they are an investment.
Secondly, secondly, I didn't know you could just buy a skeleton.
What?
Well, right?
How do you search?
How do you search for that on Google without somebody coming to your door and being like, so, why do you want a skeleton?
Exactly.
But what's even better is that when they brought the skeleton, they flew over.
So they had to package him up and put him through TSA.
And they were worried that TSA was going to rip open the box, thinking like, what the heck is in here?
Why do I see a bunch of skeleton bones all disconfigured because it wasn't put together yet?
Like we had to build him once we got to link it.
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
And that's also how you practice an end.
Yes, exactly.
So did you sing the song in your head?
The leg bone, connect it to the hip bones.
Is that a thing?
Like, so just, again, they're, they're, our listeners, we know our listeners.
They're Googling.
All of them.
How much is the skeleton?
And then there are people going, oh, cool, we now know.
You're welcome.
This is the thing.
You also name your call.
Cars.
Yes.
Oh, you have to.
Okay.
What is the name of your car?
My car, the one outside, my little Pontiac, that's Thumper.
Thumper.
Thumper. Forest.
Chuck.
The Texas girl with Chuck.
I like that.
Yeah, yeah.
That's not really a reach.
That's kind of like pets with human names.
It's just the best.
Like if you're at a dog park and you just are somebody that's just like, Sam,
Sam, get over here.
And then you just see this, like, little puppy.
And you're just like, that's a same.
I think the cars are the,
The only time you need the name for the car is when the car isn't behaving.
Oh, we named Ars Thumper because, unbeknownst to us, the bass is really good.
And I was just messing around one day.
And I was like, you know what?
And I had a song that was like real bass boosted and I turned it up and messed with the bass turned it up.
And I go, oh, wait a minute.
All the mirrors are shaking.
I like this.
I just, yeah.
So Thumber.
The text says, you know, like a real skeleton that had skin on it, not like a Halloween
skeleton. Like, no, this is like a human...
Like a, like one that you would imagine, like in your science class, standing there in the
corner. Just looking at you all the time. Yeah. Knowing your secrets.
Yep. Nope. Still creepy.
Nope. I just want to point that. That skeleton's soul might still be there and I'm not,
no. That's the part. Has your furnace ever just like gone out? You hear like some tapping.
Oh, it definitely makes noises. Yep. Nope. Because the walls are really thin. Nope. Hard pass.
Hard pass. Like, I just,
You might have brought the soul with you.
I'm going to need you to.
It will sage this thing out.
A little stitious.
I think, yeah, that's super, just a little.
I think that a part of the direction of your program is exposing you what your specialties are to a fan base that is curious, but they don't have access.
And now you guys are the vehicle for providing information for Nebraska Swimming Dive.
And I think you're the right folks for it.
And the other thing is the fact that you guys like each other and that you know each other's secrets will certainly.
Yeah.
There are days.
There are days.
Makes her great radio.
Yeah.
It really does.
It really does.
And I think that's a big part of it.
And I wanted to introduce you to this hour of radio to the listeners because the more they know you, the more support they're going to provide for you.
and the easier this is going to be.
Are we going to stick with the deep end?
Are we going to keep that as the working title of it?
I think so.
I like the name.
Well, I got to send the big voice,
big voice Bob,
so we put Madison's name into it.
And then he's going to need her pronunciation because...
I kind of don't want to send it to him
because I want to see how he says it first.
So, yeah, so sometimes with difficult names,
it'll take him three or four tries.
Like he'll send him and go, Nailed it.
And he'll send it over and go,
no, you didn't.
Like he's still to get Reagan's name right,
but we went with it anyway.
So we have to do that.
So one final.
So say we're actually going to send this.
We'll send this to him.
Yeah.
So Reagan, your full name.
Reagan, Hensie.
Madison.
Madison, Ronquilio.
Ronquilio.
There we go.
We'll send that to him.
Send that to Big Voice, Bob.
We'll get that in.
Next Monday, you guys together.
Yep.
Yep.
We might have it.
By then?
I don't know what Bob is up to.
And then we need some Madison music.
Ooh, like my own music.
Music that when we come back from break, that's what plays.
Like the Pena Collada song.
Oh, okay, okay.
Yeah, so you can pick, give us, you know, you guys together.
Yeah.
Give us your own.
Okay.
You know, and I think it's there.
Again, it's weird to know that in June you're that busy.
You're as busy as you are.
You're training.
What's your workout schedule, right?
When do you work out with?
with teammates um it is well we started woods this week so woods is our outdoor pool so we have
that monday tuesday thursday mornings from 730 to 1030 and then we have weights Monday Wednesday
Friday at 7 and then if month Wednesday Friday mornings just at divany until whenever and then
Monday Wednesday Friday afternoons not much going on
All I heard was dates and that was just too much.
Mornings, every day, afternoons, Wednesday.
How different is, Madison, is your schedule from Reagan?
Ours is pretty, there's some overlap.
Like, so we go Monday, Wednesday, Friday doubles.
So then 7 a.m. swim, 8 a.m. lift, 2.30 to 4.30 swim.
And then we just started doing Tuesday, Thursday afternoons at Woods, 4 to 6 p.m.
And then we'll do Saturday morning.
And then how many courses you take in over the summer?
Over the summer, I'm just taking one.
What do you take?
Communications 101.
How about that?
Perfect.
Ray, what do you take it?
What are you taking?
I'm taking music theory and oral skills too.
See?
So it's there.
It makes sense.
Do you think you could, so you'll get Rico up on the platform?
You want to go up to 10 meter?
We're working on it.
I got to convince my co-host.
Because he needs to go with him to record it.
Okay.
Because he's a little sissy.
It's a little windy up there.
I'm not going to lie.
I'll be fine.
If I fall off, I fall off.
I just got to make sure I throw the headphones away from the pool.
It'll be fine.
Can you teach the backstroke to a...
Oh, I can backstroke.
I was...
Look, man, I was on the swim team in middle school, all right?
Oh, snap.
You better watch out.
See?
Oh, see, this is what happens.
Eighth grade.
Eighth grade, I did the individual medley.
Okay, okay.
Breaststroke was the hardest.
I actually like doing the butterfly.
Okay.
It's actually fun.
Yeah.
Could not do breaststroke.
Don't know why.
the the video behind this is going to be exceptional that's all I'm going to say is that I'm looking forward to
for one year so yeah I think I got third in cities
that's a big deal forever ago you're so you're so ridiculous you really are ridiculously handsome thank you this is why I brought him in just pure comedy thank you
you for making time and your crazy busy schedules to come hang out.
Of course.
And introduce yourselves to the pack.
And I think you'll gain some more listeners by having folks know you a little bit better.
So looking forward to what you guys do going forward.
And we'll see you next Monday.
I think we're doing 8 o'clock next week.
Yeah.
Ooh.
Eight o'clock next morning.
Give you the extra hour.
We're going to flip gymnastics for that week.
So we can do that.
ladies, thank you very much. Thank you.
