Starting point is 00:00:00 You're listening to one-on-one with D.P. Presented by Beatrice Bakery on 937 The Ticket and the Ticketfm.com. Welcome back. The final segment of 101 before we handed over to Rasson Jackson and the Captain's Show. I went and found the clip if you get a chance. In the final portion of episode nine, the final, it's like 55 minutes or 54 minutes or so. You can go to the end of it,
Starting point is 00:00:43 and it's just a scene of magic preparing for the Sixers in a gym, and Kareem sees him working on the hook shot. And Kareem says, I hope that's not what I think it is. he's you're working on you're working on the hook so he's like I hope you're not and then he goes in
Starting point is 00:01:10 to a full explanation Rico would would you decipher from I deciphered that I wish that I would have been in that gym right because as we said before like it's bit this the show is based in reality and
Starting point is 00:01:25 I'm that fairly certain that happened but just the time and the dedication that Kareem put into his skyhook you can kind of tell in that little video that little snippet through what he was saying how the actor was saying it at least like it's great just imagine being in that gym watching Kareem teach magic how to shoot the skyhook and Kareem's breakdown of it
Starting point is 00:02:00 you know it's perfect it is and it makes perfect sense like you don't even I didn't even think about the skyhook that way but listening to that explanation it's like yeah no that makes sense
Starting point is 00:02:14 and he's you know guy called the most beautiful shot in all of sports I'm like it is a gorgeous shot it really is so I looked up who blocked Kareem's skyhook um
Starting point is 00:02:25 they say blocked it twice in the same play once Manute Bull blocked it from behind once, threw it off the backboard. Bill Russell caught him a few times. And then they said this guy, Bill Willoughby. Oh, young Bill.
Starting point is 00:02:42 Bill, so as we were talking about Spencer Haywood, Bill Willoughby was one of the very first players to not go to college and play in the NBA. Big, big set, big, I think he was like 6, 611. So we've got artist, Gilmore, Bill Willoughby, Ralph Samson, Will, and Bill Russell, and Manupol. So just, you know, massive human beings and extremely talented people have blocked the Skyhook. Bill Willoughby played for your New York Knickerbockers.
Starting point is 00:03:16 I have never heard of him. Six-eight from Englewood, New Jersey. He said he had like a four-something. No, he played for the Hawks, the Braves. Cavs, Rockets, Spurs, Nets. He played for the Nets, not the Nix. Said six, eight journeymen with a 47-inch vertical. Crazy.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Crazy good. So understandably, I can see him getting up and blocking the shot. It says that as the way it is, let's see here, after graduating Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, he was selected by Atlanta Hawks in 1975, first pick in the second round by Pat Passing College. he was the second youngest at the time behind Stan Brown
Starting point is 00:04:02 So there's a video of Cream Sky Hook getting blocked And it has the names Willett Chamberlain artist Gilmore Ralph Samson Robert Parrish Bill Willoughby Bill Walton Hakeem Nate Thurmond And Manute Bull
Starting point is 00:04:16 Yeah one of the few players who blocked the Skyhook at its apex So Debar's whole thing was that with his height length that if he got to the apex of his of his space. You're not touching. And that he slightly elevated. So he jumped up high. Got to the apex, then flick the wrist,
Starting point is 00:04:39 and then extended the ball forward and up, that it was very difficult to block. And it was the most dominant move in all of the NBA history. It still is to this. It's the most dominant shot in all of the NBA history. Like these names, it's a bunch of Hall of Famers, a freak athlete in Bill Willoughby. Who was a freak athlete? Yeah, a freak athlete and a bunch of Hall of Famers.
Starting point is 00:05:05 Yeah. Are the only ones to have blocked Karim shot. Yeah. Freak. I mean, you know, he's, he's the leader. He's the leader. There's a reason. He's cap.
Starting point is 00:05:14 And that's how that works. Speaking of cap, we'll throw it to break and we'll come back. We'll hand it over to Rishon Jackson, the cap. do you ever have a skyhook did you ever try it oh try it as a kid yeah I was a kid
Starting point is 00:05:29 but I had to only I could only do it against my little brother because I was taller than he was otherwise I was a short dude I was playing
Starting point is 00:05:36 I couldn't skyhook I hooked from like back here from like my hip and I would just like throw it up I'm like you're not gonna block this because you can't see it
Starting point is 00:05:44 they told it he was talking about his space or haywood that he actually had an additional bone in all of his fingers so his hands were bigger
Starting point is 00:05:52 than everybody else's. That's why he was the first player to kind of play with one hand. Yeah, he actually had extra bones in his fingers. Weird. Gifted. Blessed. Blessed.
Starting point is 00:06:04 Blessed. Blessed. It's still weird. Blessed. All right. Breshawn Jackson up next here on a 937 ticket.
