I'm D-P.

And the Twitter.
The Twitter.
I spent some time last night in the stat space, the analytic space, that is college softball.
And I was trying to figure out from just from a stat standpoint.
And again, the stats mean what you want them to mean, like whatever.
of it you want to take because stats will tell you some finite numbers but it won't tell you
it can't define competition it can't define injury it can't define there's several things that
it can't define but it does gives you some common threads to talk about so in a bracket where
the huskers will travel to still water and face uh they will open up against north texas and then
win or lose you then would either face fordum or
or Oklahoma State.
So you start to peek at this thing
and to see what the identities of these teams are.
Because it will dictate,
because it's a double elimination play,
sometimes game management and pitching management
is important. It's vital.
It's vital.
Making a decision over who pitches against who.
style of play.
You okay, Rika?
Yeah, our AC's broken.
I think this might be actually them for the first time in like a week.
I'll get through, bro.
So a couple of things that you start to look at matchups, right?
And then you try to figure out who throws for Nebraska against which opponent.
And then you have to get into the personalities of the opponents, who's done what,
and what you believe that they are capable of.
So I wanted to break down or at least go into some of the stats.
You're starting with North Texas and to figure out what it is,
what the mean green will bring to Stillwater and the style of play and otherwise.
And then we will compare them to Nebraska,
so to give you some case of point.
Now, again, the schedule, North Texas' schedule is different than Nebraska's.
It doesn't have the same quality of play or caliber.
play across the board. Now they have some individual matchups that you would find interesting
because it would tell you some things about who they played against and what they're capable
of. But what every coach will tell you is that it doesn't matter at all. North Texas was
35 and 14 for the year. They were 17 and 7 in conference. So it tells you they're 18 and 7.
pretty new, pretty 18 and 7 out of conference.
They played number 19 Louisiana Lafayette and lost by five down in Louisiana at the early season tournament.
They beat Colorado State.
They went through, they lost to Texas 8 to 2.
That's a pretty good measuring stick as well, but they did that down and down in Texas.
They lost to Oklahoma State.
but then they were pretty dominant against everybody else that they played.
They played number one Oklahoma and got 10 run rules of 10 nothing in six innings,
but that's not really shocking.
They beat Kansas.
They went two and one against Kansas.
Then most of the rest of their play was in conference against teams like Louisiana Tech, Charlotte, Western Kentucky,
who they were all pretty dominant against this season.
then you get into the numbers
and this is the postseason
so the numbers that matter most are pitching numbers
we understand that pitchers will dictate
and determine how a lot of this plays out
for the main green
there are a couple of things that jump out
they have
three pitchers that they use a lot
two that they will rely on
and you would expect that Nebraska will face
one of these two.
And Ashley Peters was 19 and 6.
She started 27 of 38 games of the 38 games she appeared in.
Started 27, completed seven.
Completed seven games.
So she's got Jews.
ERA of under 2.5.
She threw 159 innings, 146.
146 hits.
She struck out 147 to the 146 hits that she gave up.
So she's got something there, right?
One for one almost.
She gave up 14 home runs over course of the season,
six hit batters, and six wild pitches and 11 hit batters.
How you registered that is to comparing it to,
to what you know, compared to what you know and what Nebraska did,
that falls in line with Olivia Farrell for hits for the season.
Olivia gave up 150, struck out 155.
Okay.
Better control, Farrell.
Better control, Courtney Wallace.
But this stuff is in play, right?
Just giving you things to wrap your brain around.
Their number two pitcher, Skyler Savage, ERA of 2.84.
She started 18 games, 14 and 7 for the course of the season,
gave up 133 hits and 145 innings.
Struck out 119, it doesn't have the strike ratio.
Pitching to contact.
Ashley Peters gave up 11 home runs.
But 22 while pitches.
Pitching everywhere.
23 wild pitches and eight hit batters.
So, and then they've got a couple other pitches that they were used,
and you would imagine that.
Not very often.
Well, in double elimination, you kind of go with what you got.
Later in the tournament is where you start getting into those other pitches.
You've got the next four pitches, five appearances, three appearances, two appearances, one appearance.
Yeah, so you're going to face those two.
Yeah.
One of the two.
And I would imagine that Ashley Peters is the starter,
depending on whether there's, you know,
I don't know if there's a left-right thing going on,
but there's that.
From the offensive side of things,
they've got some heat in the middle of their order.
They've got some folks, and I'll give you the numbers.
And again, remember, I'm not sure you're facing the level of pitching
that they would face in the Big Ten conference.
I would imagine that Nebraska pitching is a step above what they faced on a day-to-day basis.
But again, I gave you the comps and teams that they played along the way.
So they've played something.
You faced Oklahoma.
So you've seen enough.
You face Texas.
You know what top-level pitching looks like.
So you know what it is.
They didn't have much success against them.
But that's why you're a lower seat.
That's just how that works.
But they've got some talent offensively.
Kelly Gamble leads them with 16 home runs and 52 RBI.
She hit 345.
So there's some bop in the middle of this lineup.
They've got two other players in double digits in home runs.
Kaylee Christensen and Taylor Evans both have,
they had 10 and 11 home runs respectively.
And then they've got four hitters above 300 and then another four above 200,
and then another four above 200 where they're going to use them.
They don't use the bench as much as you would think.
They've got some folks down a little bit lower in the lineup as well.
They've got some pop in those four positions in the lineup.
They can produce runs.
At the top, they've got Taylor Evans who gave them 17 stolen bases and 20 attempts,
so sure run the bases.
Kaley Christensen was 9 of 10 in 10.
stealing bases, a stolen basis, and Lexi Cobb, who hits 414, was 9 of 11 in stolen bases.
414, 6 home runs, 10 doubles.
They got it in.
They got it in.
And most of their players are pretty good about the work.
They work the count a lot.
They've got Taylor Evans, 31 walks.
Yeah, a lot of pitch count going on there.
So, again, if Courtney Wallace and Olivia Farrell are on their game and handling their business
and don't put themselves in bad situations, they're going to be just fine.
What you'll look at with Farrell is at her 155 strikeouts is a pretty good number.
It's two-to-one strikeout to walk.
Three-to-one is ideal in that space.
Courtney Wallace, 92 strikeouts and 60 walks in that.
If they keep themselves out of trouble, they should be fine in the open.
Both Courtney and Olivia Farrell gave up 11 home runs, 27 for the season, which is not a big number.
It's a very low number.
That is not a very big number.
I would take that.
Well, 27 home runs, total.
Yeah, total.
I would take that from my pitching staff.
Total.
So we're good with that.
I'm trying to pull up the Huskers stats,
because I wanted to see from those numbers,
what they were doing home run-wise.
What was the home-run number for, here he is.
The Huskers hit, to their 27, the Huskers hit 75 home runs.
And they only gave up, well, those two pitchers only gave up 27, you said?
27.
Yeah, I like that.
I like that a lot, actually.
Stolen bases, 45 of 53 for the Huskers.
So at least you know that.
The green 59 of 74.
So they will get on.
They'll try to work you for a walk.
They're okay with that.
They'll try to get on.
And then they stole 59 bases throughout the course of the year.
Not bad numbers.
No.
Not bad numbers.
Then you get into the Fordoms.
And here's what?
I'll say about Ford. Ford was 30 and 20. And if this thing goes well, Nebraska does not see Ford.
Okay. Yeah. Because. Well, if this thing goes really well, you do see Fordham. No, no, no. You want to go through Oklahoma State. Well, you do. What I'm just saying. You want to go through Oklahoma State. If you could avoid Oklahoma State. You want to go through Oklahoma State.
And one of my favorite things
My players understood this
And they accepted this as gospel, as I would say,
whenever we were on the road,
we want to thank our welcoming guests,
welcoming hosts.
We appreciate them inviting us to their party,
and they bought all this food
and invited all their favorite people.
And we're just going to show up there as the guests
and eat all their food.
Yeah.
We're taking everything.
Yeah.
It's a big opportunity.
If I had not witnessed Oklahoma State beating Oklahoma this weekend,
I'd feel much better about it.
Like I'd feel like, oh, just from a number standpoint,
I get where Nebraska,
wins this bracket, wins this entire, this, this regional.
Now, to aid in Nebraska's quest in beating Oklahoma State,
Oklahoma State had faced Oklahoma three, four other times before,
so they knew what they were getting.
Well, but Oklahoma State, here's the thing.
Oklahoma State is 18 and 1 at home.
Reminds we have another team.
Yeah, 18 and 1 at home.
They were 14 and 4 in conference, 41 and 12.
overall, a couple of games of notes,
and we'll go up and down the list,
that they,
uh,
they beat Arizona State,
who was the top 20.
They,
uh,
they did lose to Duke.
Mm-hmm.
Um, who,
that's not really a surprise,
I guess.
Uh,
they beat Utah.
Uh,
they beat Michigan 4-0,
so that gives you some point of reference.
They lost to LSU.
Um,
then you,
you got Washington.
They lost to Washington.
Uh,
they beat North,
Western 4-3, beat A&M twice.
They swept Minnesota.
It gives again, point of reference.
Point of reference.
They beat, oh, they beat North Texas 4-2 earlier this season.
They face each other.
They face each other.
Okay.
And, you know, North Texas, 4-2.
Four-two.
Okay, mean green.
Okay.
Battle Texas
Tech
Baylor,
they swept Baylor,
which is pretty impressive.
They beat Texas
three times in a row.
Oklahoma couldn't do that.
Oh, boy.
Oh, boy.
All in Stillwater.
But they got swept
by Florida State, number four, Florida State.
Well, that is a great team.
Right?
They're loaded.
but they also
but they got swept by Oklahoma
7-1-6-0-0-5-3
at the end at the first
week of Matt
they got this was in Norman
closer as the games went on
kind of
and then
and then they beat Kansas 2-0
they beat Texas 6-1
and then they beat Oklahoma
4-3 in
eight innings
so
Big 12 championship right
so
they're playing the night game
the numbers
this is a pitch
first team
pitching a defense
a ton of pitching
a ton of pitching
I kind of felt like
in looking at them offensively
that they were they're scrappy
on offense
they're scrappy like they will work
counts and get into that space.
Power,
their leading home run hitter.
They have three people who hit 10 home runs.
Three players who hit 10 home runs.
That's a lot of power.
A lot of pop in those bats.
Well, I mean, but relative to Nebraska, that's not scary, right?
No.
They hit 62 home runs to Nebraska's, what we say?
75.
They've got good hitters at the top.
So they've got five hitters over 300.
Um, they all, they have three base runners with over, with double digits and stolen bases.
So scrappy, they get ball, they put it in play.
They're really good.
They're really good with pitch count and, and, and, and I can find.
They do strike out a lot.
They strike out a lot.
183 walks to 239 strikeouts.
So.
And if we compare that, because I was just looking at Nebraska's, which is,
eerily similar, I believe, 171 walks to 225 strikeouts.
Right.
So if I said this, the two are, so they've got, and oddly enough, the young lady that carried them through their tournament, probably, I don't know that she's, she's not their ace.
But, but, but so Morgan Day got them through the tournament.
Okay.
but Kelly Maxwell is there is there is their is their starter start so Kelly
Kelly Maxwell was 16 to 4 Miranda Elish is 13 and 4 Morgan Day was 11 and 4
22 starts for for Maxwell 16 for Elish and 14 for Morgan Day from
from innings 148 from Maxwell 104 for Elish
86 for day.
I was surprised at this.
Actually, because if I didn't know better,
and just from watching them this weekend,
I'd have thought that Morgan Day was their ace.
I'd have thought she was the ace.
But that's not the case.
That's a way to save your ace for regional.
That is not the case.
Morgan Day gave up the most home runs.
She gave up 12 home runs.
Kelly Maxwell gave up seven.
So just to wrap your brain around it,
They have three pitchers.
Nebraska's got three pitchers.
Yeah.
So that's not really that much difference from a power standpoint.
Strength of schedule may give you some advantage if you're Oklahoma State.
Yeah, it will.
Playing at home gives you an advantage.
But I'll say this.
After looking at tape and then watching this weekend, again, if they had not beaten Oklahoma,
I would say Nebraska wins the bracket easily.
Not easily, but I think they win the bracket.
You think they come out of that.
I think they win the bracket.
They go to the super regional.
Right.
So, yeah.
It's kind of like.
So it's just a one one game, you know, they could be riding high.
Well, they are riding high.
They're riding high and they're playing at home.
But I didn't want.
I didn't want to give them credit for things they haven't done.
I will say this,
depending on who Oklahoma State throws against Fordham
will dictate who Nebraska faces.
Okay.
I'm okay.
I mean, they've got three potential stars.
Yeah.
And they're pitching a home.
Where they only have one loss.
I'd like to hope that Fordham gave them a scare, at least.
That's kind of what I was getting at is you want Fordham to at least, you know,
keep Oklahoma State honest.
Well, make them use two pitchers is what I want.
I want them to use.
Don't get run-ruled.
Make them work.
Go the whole game.
They battled, right?
Yeah.
Don't end this in five or six.
Go seven.
They battle.
And make Oklahoma State sweat a little bit.
They're familiar with each other.
Let me look up that box score.
So in the previous meeting, at the time Oklahoma State was 17 and 5, North Texas was 14 and 5.
Kelly Maxwell was undefeated, started that game.
North Texas got four hits total to 11 for Oklahoma State.
Scores actually tied until the sixth inning.
And then they put up two runs.
It was 2-2.
Oklahoma State went up 2-0.
and the first and second, and then,
uh,
Cobb for North Texas Homer,
two run Homer tied at two.
And then Oklahoma State scored two in the,
bottom of the six,
uh,
to help win it for two.
So North Texas put a scare into him.
Right.
Like there's a, like there's, like there's, yeah.
I mean, you're six inning.
It's in the six,
Scalor Savage through for North Texas,
which might tell us some things.
That's who's going to pitch against Nebraska.
Nebraska is going to see Skylar Savage.
Right.
Let me see.
Like if you're headed to Stillwater to face Oklahoma State
and you start Skylar Savage,
that's going to be your ace when you're playing a regional in Stillwater.
That would be my thought process at least.
I'm going to go through, so let me go through it.
So the best way to tell.
Okay, so here's it.
So to clinch their conference title against Western Kentucky,
Ashley Peters started.
Ashley Peters.
Who are you going to start?
I would imagine in the most important of games, right?
Yeah.
That conference championship.
You start your ace.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Scholars.
Well, she's 19 and she's 19.
and she's 19 and 6.
Yeah.
Well,
did,
who was,
so Skylar Savage
and who was the other one?
I'm going to go back.
Sorry.
To,
we'll make me go back to the other page.
I'm trying to look at the Louisiana Tech and see.
Yeah.
So Scalaj Savage through both the first two games?
The last two games.
All three games.
Okay.
She pits the entire weekend.
So I guess it's Ashley Peters.
There you go.
All right.
Ha!
Well, no, that's weird.
I'm going to...
We're going to have to look more into this.
Yeah, that's Ashley Peters and then Skyless Savage and then Ashley Peters.
Because you would, I mean, maybe you would think you have, you know, your ace.
19 wins is a nice benchmark.
That's your start.
Yeah.
That's your start.
So the Huskers have their work cut out for them.
But the path is there.
The path is there for the Huskers to advance.
So we'll throw the break.
We'll talk a little bit more when we'll come back.
