Starting point is 00:00:00 with D.P. Sponsored by the downtown Lincoln Foundation on 937 the ticket. We're back here on one-on-one with D.P. on 93-7, the ticket with Nebraska men's tennis coach, Peter Cobalt in studio. I am Jake Boccovin. And we do have a comment here that I wanted to read off from Dave Braska off the text line says I've been playing tennis for 56 years since I've gotten to know the Nebraska men's and women's coaches on the ticket. I've chosen to donate some money to both programs. So thanks to Dave Braska, long time tennis player. Thank you very much. That's very kind of you. We appreciate it. Yeah, yeah, very cool stuff. And again, if you haven't had the chance and now the opportunities might have passed you by for now,
Starting point is 00:00:45 when would be the next time to go see Nebraska, like the individual season? When would that start off? I know the Challenger is coming up this, this summer. But the next chance to actually watch really good tennis in Nebraska is the Challenger, July 12th or the 19th. You can go to Lincoln Challenger. any of the social media, you know, whatever you use social media-wise, and you can find it there, too. But for our specific season in the fall, we'll have a few tournaments that we're hosting here in Lincoln, one of them being regionals, which is one of the tournaments that you need to do well and to qualify for the individual NCAA championships that happened in November, which is a really cool event to be hosting here. So that's also free. Everything that we do outside of the ATP event is free of
Starting point is 00:01:31 charge to show up the ATP events an outside event that's ran by an outside entity so there that that's a little bit different than a Nebraska sponsored event or tournament that we have here but yeah I would say sometime in the fall that regional is in October October 7th early 11th it just crosses over with the Indiana football game so okay um obviously that's Saturday it might be tough to get people to come out and watch but that Thursday Friday and Sunday are you're going to see some of the best talent in in our Missouri Valley Central United States region, which is, which is cool. Yeah, yeah, that is going to be very cool. So I know a lot of people are gaining interest and learning so much about the program from
Starting point is 00:02:14 when you and Herman come in weekly. And so hopefully the crowd base, the fan base is growing and we get more people out there. And now we know a few of the names that they might see next year if they do decide to go. That doesn't mean I can pronounce them. I'm going to try this one. Let's go for it. Inzo Champignuli. No. No, not even close.
Starting point is 00:02:36 I got Inzo right, didn't I? Enzo, you got right. Champagne. Okay. Champagne. You don't, the double L is like the, you say it. With French, it's a tough language because how we would read it, you would say it like totally different. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:51 So reading, writing in French is a little bit easier, reading is probably the hardest part from my experience at least. Yeah. How much how much do you have to? I mean, you obviously recruit all these different, you know, from all these different countries. You're not fluent in all these languages, but how much do you kind of know get and pick up? We're lucky because English is, you know, the centerfold language across the world. So most people have to learn, even if they're not from the United States or their country doesn't speak English, like they're, they have to learn English in school, at least a little bit. So most of the recruits that we talk to, you can at least hold a conversation with.
Starting point is 00:03:28 There's been times where I don't know what they're saying and they don't know what I'm saying, and we kind of just have a stalemate kind of. Yeah. But usually if that's the case, they're not going to have a good enough English to get into the school. So that's, you know, that's tough. But we bet a lot of that on the front end. We have one call or one conversation and we can kind of know from just a English standpoint if they're going to be able to make it into the academic programs here.
Starting point is 00:03:59 But yeah, Enzo is a great kid. Very hard worker, very professional. All the kids that we're recruiting, all the recruits that we look at, where they have a couple things in common. They love tennis. They want to practice and get better every single day, and they all want to be pro tennis players. So it's really hard in today's world to coach guys
Starting point is 00:04:23 is super, super hard. And if they don't want to practice that day and they don't have some of these characteristics, it's hard to get the most out of them. So knowing me and how I coach and how I see the program growing and the expectations that are on the program, recruiting the right kids is very important. So all the guys that we've signed so far this year,
Starting point is 00:04:44 they all have those, they're all different, very different personalities, but they have those three pillars basically in line. with everyone else. So the goal for me is to have 10 guys in the team that are like that. And then to help them with their tennis and with their growth while they're here at Nebraska use all the resources that we have here to do that. And, yeah, Enzo's just the latest, the latest one out of the five that we have already
Starting point is 00:05:09 signed. And yeah, we're dabbling in the transfer portal right now too, which is tough. Yeah, but at least exciting stuff as you're building a roster. Enzo's the latest ones. That's the name I saw. I'll give you a chance to shout out the other newcomers you got coming. Yeah, so we have one regional recruit from Kansas. His name is Michael Ward.
Starting point is 00:05:30 His grandfather is an alumni here, which is really cool to have some Nebraska blood. Yeah. To be a part of the program, that'll be the first time since Will Gleason, Southwest graduate from here in Lincoln. Okay. He was here my first year here when I was the assistant.
Starting point is 00:05:48 So the first time in four years, for five years, we'll have someone with some legit, Nebraska ties to the program, which is great. He's going to be an up-and-coming star, in my opinion, kind of an under-the-radar type of recruit from Kansas. And then, okay, we'll start with, we'll go through the traditional recruits first.
Starting point is 00:06:07 Next is Vincent Dullinger, very, very good player from Germany. He's going to be coming in January. He's going to be focusing on playing professional events throughout the fall. He's projected to be one of our better players, very serious, very intense, wants to be the very best player he can be. very excited to have him and his family a part of our program. And so was the other traditional recruit. And then we have two transfers, Anise Rafique and Kelly,
Starting point is 00:06:34 Kelly Geese from both of them are Division II transfers. One, Anise is from Flagler and Kelly's from Lubbock Christian University. Both of those teams are still in their elite eight for Division II. So getting two of the better players to come up from the Division II level, both are very good but again they love tennis they want to practice hard every day and they want to be pros so yeah as a coach um the best the most fun time of the day is practice and uh it's really hard to enjoy the most fun time of the day when when you don't have guys that are are thinking the same way as you so for me next year's team we're going to have nine or ten guys in our team that all love tennis
Starting point is 00:07:20 that all want to be there every day. And I think that's how you're going to maximize the group of guys that you have and really make a program special. I always think that's a part of the, maybe one of the most fun parts of the job would be the new team and the new dynamic and all that kind of plays into that. Yeah, it's going to be, it'll be a lot of work trying to integrate six or seven new guys to the program, which is something that hopefully,
Starting point is 00:07:43 that's something we won't have to do too often anymore. But yeah, we're really excited about the guys and looking forward to getting to work for them soon. He's coach Peter Cobel, Nebraska men's tennis. Thanks again, coach, for jumping in studio with us. Hopefully next time we talk to you, we'll know the champion. We'll have more to talk about in the tennis world. Let's go.
Starting point is 00:08:00 Yeah, very, very cool stuff. All right, Adam Carrier coming next year on 93-7 the tickets.
