It's time to go one-on-one with D.P.
Coming at you live from the Coppull Chevrolet GMC Studios,
here is your host, Derek Pearson, presented by Beatrice Bakery,
on 93-7 The Ticket and The Ticket FM.com.
Welcome to one-on-one.
I am a grown man, baby.
I just have to confess that, that there are certain movies that just make me laugh,
and cable guy is one of them.
And the basketball scene.
The basketball scene.
Where Jim Carrey, you know, he has to fill in.
He has to fill in.
Got to warm up.
He's got warm up because he doesn't want to pull a hamming.
He comes down and he's got the headband.
He's got the wristbands.
Is it the high socks?
Yeah, got the high socks.
Got the high top converts.
The short shorts.
Short shorts.
And that scene makes me laugh.
It makes me laugh a lot.
And it puts me in a good mood.
The camera angle where he's, they're at the baseline when he's running back,
it just stops and stares at it and then runs back.
It's just good stuff.
It's just good stuff across the board.
Today's the day that we think out loud that we send smiles and we make somebody's day.
We've got a really cool thank you, Newt, from last week.
It's good sitting on the front desk.
Just a reminder that this stuff matters.
So you can today go to the Ticketfm.com website.
Find the Beatrice Bakery banner.
Click on it.
And then nominate somebody to receive a care package from Beatrice's Bakery
who has had a week, who has a day.
A tough day coming up.
at a good week,
had a bad week,
need a pat on the back,
need a kick in the pants,
somebody that you want to see smile,
somebody that you want to acknowledge,
somebody that you want to say,
I care,
I was thinking about you.
We have the ability,
through Beatrice Bakery in this station,
to make, at a minimum,
250 people smile.
Like once a week,
We get to choose somebody in this community and we get to make a husker smile.
You can help with this process by going to the ticketfim.com, clicking the Beatrice Bakery banner,
and then filling out the details of who this person is, who you care about, who you want to acknowledge, who you want to celebrate or salute.
You can also text 10, 402, 999-4620.
that's 999-4620 and you can put that information in there give me the details who is this person that you care about so much
who is this person that matters so much that you need to stop them in their day and say thank you
just say you know what i think you're awesome i think you're you're amazing i love you i care you matter
whatever here's your opportunity won't cost you a penny won't cost you a time don't cost you a time
dime all you have to do is take the time to make the nomination simple biz so if you're up and open for
that and there's somebody that comes to mind again pause there's somebody that comes to mind there's
somebody that you're thinking of right now that you know what i want them to smile today i want them
to feel special today well have that have at it have at it have at it um i think it's fair to say uh that
We all deserve a pat on the back, but we get an opportunity to do it this way.
So I allow that today.
Have at it.
Get those nominations in.
Get them in.
I'm going to post this on social media as well.
So we can do that.
Here's the other thing.
So last night, I guess Friday,
at Hollywood Bowl,
I got to meet Gwen Maya's mother, Donna.
And I also got to meet Amara Smith-Bates' mom.
She was at Erica.
They were there.
So when I walked into Hollywood Bowl,
they were sitting there together.
Of course, they do the In-the-Pocket show Monday nights.
And so they had been engaging and communicating on social media, right?
like hey coach d p thank you for taking care of our girls uh thank you for giving giving exposure
to the bowling programs enough i just got a text from paul clempa uh the coach um he's going to come
in friday morning okay um it was a celebration like the big red invite it's a celebration like
that's that's a spectacular like if you guys didn't swing by there i'm sorry you missed out
because the friday and saturday crowds were just authentic and real and they were like
the bowling alley was loud and it was positive and the energy was good and, you know, all those
things.
But to meet these two moms was exceptional because when you, it's one thing to learn who the players
are off, away from competition.
And it's necessary to meet them and understand what they like, what their personalities are.
But then to meet the moms.
So the ladies behind the ladies of the national championship bowling team.
And they're amazing.
These are amazing women.
And so first of all, she delivered, she brought snacks from Hawaii.
And she had this bag and she goes, okay, these are pineapple snacks.
And they're basically gummy bears, gummies.
But pineapple, made from pineapple.
have what you. She makes them.
And as she's telling me that she has them, she's shoving one into my mouth.
And I was like, oh, okay. Oh, oh.
Wait a minute. What is going on here?
Ma'am, you're on to something.
Delicious.
Right? Like, spectacular. So I need to text her and say, thank you for that.
but she also brought some macadamacabia like caramel corn carmel corn and it is also delicious
so good and then she brought me some chocolate macadamia that you guys can't have that's fine
you got to keep something for yourself i kept those i kept those for myself um necessary necessary
but so last night as we sat and prepared for the you know waiting for their show um
I did what
the Beatrice Bakery folks would want me to do
which was put together a care package
for the moms of the bowling team
and sent them home with her back to Hawaii
just to say thank you for
like she came in and did the show last night with the girls
she's just pleasant and joyful
and it's just good to have
to know those people exist in the world right
that she's just good, right?
She's just good.
And you understand where Gwen gets it.
It's like, oh, no wonder you love yourself.
You are absolutely loved.
Like you come from love, you were surrounded by love, you were covered in love.
Same for Amar.
Like, you understand what that is.
And then you meet Coach Clemper and you understand it.
He's authentic with his team.
He's got a great group of young ladies.
And they're really exceptional about how they engage each other and deal with each other.
Like there's no malice on the team.
There's no jealousy.
They get after, they support each other, and that's what's important.
Yeah, it's good with that.
Also, interesting enough, so we had the swimming and diving, the deep end.
And so both those young ladies are exceptional.
So Reagan and Audrey are both fascinating, young women.
of course Reagan is from where I just where I was living so she's from Conroe
Texas which was actually the official title for where I lived before I lived here and
and then Audrey's Audrey's got her own personality topic she's just substance substance
substance right but last night so Reagan's basically what happened was Brent
Brent Banks and Nurey took over the text line and the chat last
night. Yeah. And it was, I have to say, they set a new standard for how ticket chats and texts
should go. If people don't realize on the, on the ticket text line, you can't see each other's
texts, but if you go to Facebook, YouTube, or Twitch, you can have entire conversations with
listeners such as yourselves. Right. And we can see those conversations and we can join in as well.
So if you ever have a take that you think somebody else might enjoy or might have something that they might want to say about that, that's not us on the radio, just go to, you know, Facebook, YouTube or Twitch and start commenting on there and maybe somebody will respond to you.
Then maybe you can make a new friend.
This was spectacular, right?
Like, this was high level.
You just sent me a screenshot of their conversation.
And I was just like, what is happening?
What is happening here?
So to give you, I'll give you a little bit of this.
I'll give you a little bit of this.
So, Nouri says, do you think diving and driving have a high correlation since they rhyme?
And then Banks goes, hey, what are your favorite colors?
Norrie goes, hey, yo, drive to dive.
Nice.
Nori.
Thought it was red.
No, it's green.
They're talking about what she has on Green Converse.
He goes, I'm smashing some Freddy's.
What about you?
Norris says he's eating some pancakes from yesterday.
Waffles suck.
Pankakes are top tier.
Pancakes are top tier.
He goes, you want to go eat some food tomorrow?
If there's an option of either eating A, dirt or B, waffles, what are you choosing?
And Norie says he'd rather eat dirt.
I'd rather eat dirt.
Would you rather eat chewies or what a bar?
burger.
Brant says it's Chewis and you know spells it the correct way I guess.
Right.
And Norris says waffles is offals.
Brit says, I think I know my restaurants.
And then it broke down further.
Why aren't you amazed that bumblebees can fly?
And then Audrey's broke into, well, they're not, they're not aerodynamic.
Their wings aren't big enough to support their body by scientific standards.
But scientists are amazed at the fact that bumblebees can fly.
There's a whole thing on it.
There's multiple YouTube videos.
Like, it's just, it's so confusing, and it shouldn't be physically possible, but somehow bumblebees make it work.
It was spectacular.
And it made my night.
I was proud of them.
The young ladies from the gymnastics team, again, they said it was a pleasure meeting your daughter.
You know, their new favorite fans.
Unfortunately, like they, so they like all.
kind of stay down there.
They don't, there isn't any way to, like, go down to them unless you go down the stairs and
down to the actual area.
And I was like, I don't think we can do that.
So we just stayed up there.
Luckily, you know, we were kind of, she was running around.
She wouldn't listen to me.
So I was, we were there for longer than I thought we were going to be.
And luckily, Michaela came up to talk to somebody else.
And we saw her.
She saw us.
And I was just like, hey, and I took her over.
And Ellie was just like, hi, Kayla.
Like she knows.
Like this is who this is.
You can text in 999-4-6-20 if you want.
You can call into the old Honda-Lincoln hotline.
That number has not changed.
You can call into 4-6-4-5-6-85 if you have commentary.
A lot of this was me wanting to, I was in a thankful place.
I was in a grateful place.
Watching Nicole, listening to Nicole and Nick covering the high school game last night.
Nicole doing the color.
I was proud of them.
Like they put themselves out there and they did the thing that, you know,
not everybody can do and nobody's built for.
But they did it.
So Nick invited her into his space and she invited him into hers.
And they carried a full two hours or three hours of radio.
And then we moved everything back.
And then, of course, the gymnast came in and they're getting ready for their senior night Friday at Devaney.
The master's classic.
The Masters Classic, make time.
It's Friday.
It's a big weekend.
There's lots going on.
Women's Big Ten tournament.
This weekend.
Six C.
Starts when 60.
First round by.
Which gets you into the NCAA tournament.
That's something where, you know, on the best side of this thing, they could end up as, you know, five or six within their bracket.
anywhere from five to eight is where I would expect them to land.
Just about seating.
Right.
And matchups, right?
You hire your seed, the lower seed you're going to face in that first round and saves you.
And then being at five is a whole lot more beneficial because you're going to face a four seed rather than you being an eight where you got to face a one seat.
Like go put some work in so you can protect yourselves and have to deal with it.
The play-in for their opponent is Wednesday?
Wednesday.
They play Thursday.
Yeah, I, I, they're the late game Thursday.
So let's bring up the schedule.
They would be.
Bring up their schedule.
Anywhere from 530 to 745.
Okay, so one of the two.
One of the two.
One of the two late games.
And so we will pay attention.
Of course, we will put together a postgame show for it whenever that is.
Right?
That could be extremely late.
Right.
That could be late, but we'll cover it for you.
Like, we'll cover that for you.
Also, if you're looking for something in town.
Softball's in town?
Well, tomorrow, there's women's tennis for Kansas State.
And then softball welcomes Wichita State into town.
on Thursday.
Yeah, and they moved up the Sunday game to Thursday because they think the weather will be better.
Well, it's supposed to be around 60 degrees on Thursday.
But 44 on Sunday.
Yeah, I'd rather play in 60.
And then Friday, there are 13 events on Friday involving Nebraska athletics and 16 on Saturday.
Plenty for you to do.
Yeah, so they're saying, oh, okay, so there'll be thunderstorms.
Here's the schedule.
Here's what's proposed for the weather.
that Saturday will be 62,
but there's a 60% chance of thunderstorms.
And then Sunday, it'll drop down with a low of 19 and a high of 43.
So yes, play Thursday when it's 53 and you know what you're getting.
It's not going to be the 75 that it is today.
I like the thrill of not knowing if the game is going to be canceled or not.
Look, as a coach, I hate that so much.
I hate that so much.
Just amping up and trying to figure out how to get ready for a game that may not happen.
And then what do you do with that energy when it doesn't happen?
Speaking of a game that may not happen or, you know, whatever, when I was a sophomore in high school, we had a football game.
We were playing JV against Creighton Prep on a Saturday.
Oh, on a, yeah, it was a Saturday.
And it started thundering and thunderstorm.
but it was late into the game.
We were in, I think, the third quarter,
and it kept going for so long that they ended up postponing the game.
So we all went home, and then the next morning,
we had to get up and go back out there
and play the game starting in the third quarter.
Unfortunately, we were up by two touchdowns,
had all the momentum, had the ball.
When we got back out there that next morning,
that had subsided.
Yeah, the thing about, like football, it's once a week, so the day is the day,
and every now and then you could move a game to the next day if need be, if the weather was bad.
Texas, that really was never much an issue other than thunderstorms,
because you would get some serious thunderstorms on football season.
You know, humidity and all that crashing.
But in Virginia, when it happened, and in Utah, it was snow that you could move or bitter
or cold.
Virginia, it was generally like thunderstorms that would postpone football games or at least
move them to the next day.
But when it came to baseball, we would just, so this was, I don't know how high school
baseball is here, but in Virginia, tryouts, you're battling snow.
Like you're trying to find, you're trying to find.
I think there's a lot of indoor practices early in this season.
And it's really hard for you to try to make cuts and do trials.
Well, you're practicing in a gym on a basketball, on a basketball court.
And then you'll go from that to soggy, wet feel.
The ball is definitely moving different.
Right.
It moves different.
And then the outfields different because, again, it's been snowy and muddy.
And so now it's uneven again.
And you have to constantly keep rolling the field to try to get balance on it.
And then it's cold.
Like I would coach the first eight games in like a parka.
I would have the baseball uniform on with Long Johns,
but I would also have the parka.
Only ask the baseball player.
And gloves.
So it made it really hard because I would have to take my gloves off to give signs.
So you take the glove off, give the signs.
Put the gloves back on.
You got that right.
Coach, I didn't get it.
Well, that sucks.
You hit the ball.
That's what it does.
Just say it out last.
Hit the ball, Johnny.
Hit the ball.
I think he's going to do this.
Just hit it, please.
Sometimes at third I would just point to second base.
Like, go.
Like, just go.
Coach, you know they can see you.
I don't care.
I don't care.
Don't get picked off and go.
Yeah, yeah.
That's how that is.
If they pitch out, don't get caught.
And then finally, in the final six games, it's warm enough to just wear the uniform.
Finally.
Fine.
And you go through it.
So I'm never sure.
And you hated it because the rain, the thunderstorms would happen.
And the rain delays were brutal.
And so the worst thing for coaching players is to have to sit there and wonder if you're going to play.
Or you get two or three innings in and then you start looking at the sky.
And then you start making baseball decisions based on what, like, okay, if I get the four and a half, I'm good.
I get the four and a third.
I'm good.
So let me play the game a little quicker.
We're going to do less nonsense.
I'm going to get the lead.
I'm going to get the lead, and then I'm going to go into my own version of speed up
to get us to get us that 13th out so we can go home.
As soon as the ball touches your glove, you throw it back to the pitcher.
You get ready to throw the pitch.
Let's go.
Let's go.
We're not throwing it around.
We're not going to meet on the field in between the innings.
Look, if you're struggling, figure it out.
Get out there and get it done.
Yeah, we had a lot of track meets ran in rainy conditions.
Yeah, like just make it.
Which is not fantastic.
Make it work.
Make it work.
One of the biggest track meets in the country was at my high school is called the Herringer Relays, the Al-Harendger Relays.
And there'd be 200 track teams.
And you had to bring you full squad because it was relays.
Oh, that sounds great.
Oh, it was amazing.
Like, people would come from Pennsylvania.
They'd come from North Carolina.
They'd come from West Virginia.
I never got to run a hurdle relay.
Oh, it was spectacular.
They looked so much fun.
It was spectacular.
I think we had a pretty good hurdle squad at the time.
You know, I mean, but you had to have four people.
Oh, yeah.
like how it worked.
So it was fun, but yeah, the weather was always the thing.
And, of course, this weekend, that'll be the case here.
Softball's here.
Gymnastics is here.
Big Ten tournament wrestling is at PBA on Saturday.
It's all Saturday.
It's all Saturday.
That is a lot of wrestling.
They're four sessions.
There are four sessions.
And it's on BTM, but, I mean, you know, I'm, how early are they starting?
10 a.m.
First session is 10 a.m.
They're going at least to 10 p.m., right?
No.
The championships are like, begin at like 4.30.
That's a lot of teams and a lot of matches to get done in that amount of time.
Yeah.
That's why I know that this is a post-up for me.
Like this one, this one's one.
Like I plan on going to see some softball if it's not thunderstorming.
Yeah, I'm definitely going to make my way out.
Like if it's not, if there's not a thunderstorm.
Take Ellie and KJ.
there. But I want to go see it. I'll be there Friday for gymnastics and their,
that master's classic. So, yeah, it'll be a busy sports weekend. We'll go through a little bit
of more. I've got the brackets up for the women's big 10 tournament. And then we'll talk about
tonight and the men and they're going to Ohio State, see what they can pull off, talk a little
baseball. Of course, we'll talk baseball later tonight down at Buzzability, 6 o'clock, Bryce Matthews,
and Cam Chick and Company.
we'll be down there.
So you'll have a chance to come meet them,
take some pictures, get some autographs, whatever.
Bring some baseballs, maybe get them signed, maybe.
A couple of footballs, maybe get them sign, maybe.
Stop it.
I'm just teasing.
Just teasing.
I'm just teasing.
So we'll do that.
We'll throw the break.
We'll come back.
We'll take more nominations for Vietje's Bakery.
Thank you guys for those are starting to show up.
But put them in.
And I'll tell you, if you get them in by the next segment,
I'll put together a care package.
for you. Just get them in. You've got until 1035. We'll be right back.
