There's a thing that
Barry Thompson, dear friend,
I was spend some time with him and his brother,
Edwin Thompson, the head coach, Georgetown.
Bach, it was a great
weekend of, so imagine that
eight big-time college coaches,
baseball coaches got together and had a
combine weekend in D.C.
And a lot of conversations took place in that.
There's a lot of shared information.
Okay.
But before we get back into this, I know we have another,
we have another bill to pay.
So,
you please pay the bills? Yes, this hour is sponsored by Shwezo Construction, where safety isn't
just a policy, it's a promise. Shwezo is hiring skilled craftsmen, laborers, concrete workers,
and steel erectors who value quality work and a team that has your back on and off the job site.
Appled today at Shwezo.com, 40 years strong in business, Shwezo Construction.
Thank you, kind, sir. Thank you to Shwezo.
Wet Blanket. Good to see on a Wednesday. Appreciate it.
here's the thing, right?
So as coaches' salaries are what created the situation that we have in college sports.
College sports separated from the educational system, and in their quotes,
when coaches went from being paid like educators to being paid like entertainers,
the coach's salary cap is a central going forward.
Now, I think this is, right, that it's not that coaches' salaries are necessarily the evil.
it's the fact that it doesn't hold people accountable in full to the decision-making process and the recruiting process.
There's no integrity if a coach's contract is only as valuable as your ability to break the contract.
If contracts are just in place to set the getaway problem, well, listen, if Penn State decided to fire its coach,
it could only, it should only set up a place where you're not,
breaking somebody else's contract.
And it makes Penn State beholden to.
You know what?
Maybe, maybe firing James Franklin midseason
isn't the best plan.
Maybe we should wait until we have more data.
Maybe we should wait until the season ends.
Let the season play out.
Let the story be told.
Because what if Penn State goes on a run?
Think about that.
Notre Dame.
They lose the,
was it northern Illinois?
Right.
People calling for the firing of Freeman.
They correct the ship.
They go through.
They play in a championship game.
Who was right?
Sometimes.
And the same people who will tell you to trust the process
want you to break the process in order when it's convenient.
Trust the process.
You're committed to this.
We always talk about commitment.
Be loyal.
Be loyal to the program.
The name on the front of the Jersey, not the name of the back.
The name on the building and not the name
on the coaching office.
The name of the building,
not the name on the bank account.
Convenience, Bach.
If we said that
if you have salary caps
for players,
why would you not have,
you found it,
the powers that be decided
that you needed to cap
what the people playing the game.
And hey man,
every coach would tell you
he's only as good as his players.
Don't be hypocrites.
If you're as good as the players,
are the field. Why are they, captain, you aren't? Why? And it allows the freedom for the chaos to
happen. The reason you have boundary is to limit chaos. It eliminates side deals. It limits bad
deals. It makes you beholden to your word, to your agreements, to the greater picture. And Penn State
making a decision like that, that's a Penn State thing. It should stay in the house.
That's a Penn State thing.
I don't need the leaky plumbing from Penn State to show up in Lincoln, Nebraska.
I don't, Lincoln didn't deserve that.
Nebraska doesn't deserve that deal with this.
But I understand, right?
Right.
Webblank is this.
Notre Dame started 0 and 2 this year.
They will likely finish 10 and 2 and likely be hosting a college football playoff game.
All possible.
That when you allow things to happen, right?
Bob says this, there should be more of a penalty.
a financial penalty when a coach leaves.
Listen, the payback and the buyouts and all that stuff,
that is corrective.
That means that you simply had a check and balance
for when we just don't care and screw it up.
That's what that's for.
When you should put it in advance and get it right,
that's why you do diligence.
That's why you meet compliance.
That's why they ask you, listen,
they have all these deals in place for NIL.
Right, boundaries, limits, you know, duration time, something actually has to be done for the money.
Tell me what those are for coaches.
Tell me, I'll wait.
And I'm not mad at coaches.
I'm a coach at heart.
But I also know that if you're trying to fix the problem that this situation shouldn't happen,
and if it does, at least have something in place to hold it down.
And it makes perfect sense.
Again, we don't have all the answers.
We're trying to get to the right question.
texture says the captains you were referring to would cause unionizing it would be logical but completely ruin the game but what's happening now will ruin the game that bad business at one member institute will bleed into the plumbing of the institutions that are trying to do right and are having success leeches exist for a very reason in nature that they attach themselves to a better thing a bigger thing to enhance themselves but the reality should be hey man
honor your word.
You're under contract.
You know, maybe it's a terrible analogy,
but don't hit on the married lady, bro.
She's under contract.
Don't hit on the married man.
He's under contract.
Right?
Like, there's simplicity,
especially in the neighborhood.
Especially in the neighborhood.
But as we also say,
we covered what we see.
We always want what we see.
What?
The thing we see,
The successful thing we see the most is the thing we covet.
Oh, human nature.
Human nature.
We're just trying to figure out how to fix it.
Again, I say shame on Penn State,
but Penn State didn't necessarily put this in the water
to deal with Matt Rule and Nebraska.
They simply made a decision.
I think it's a terrible decision for prior James Franklin in season
after three and three starts.
It's not like he's on six or one and five.
It's not like he's getting beaten.
by 40 points.
Oh, he lost a one-point game,
a field goal, a double overtime,
and a five-point game.
Two of those to top five teams in the country
at the time.
Or top 10 teams in the country.
So, I don't know.
Seems a little much to me.
But okay, it's your house to do what you do.
But then the people involved.
My whole thing was that I thought it was silly
to put Matt Ruhl's name in this.
That's why Will Smith went up on stage
and smacked somebody, Chris Rock in the mouth.
Keep my wife's name out your mouth.
Keep my coach's name out your mouth.
Media.
It wasn't Nebraska media who said first, Matt Rule.
And if they did, they should have got Chris Rock.
Whoever said it, deserve the Will Smith Street.
Because Nebraska didn't deserve it.
Matt Rule didn't deserve.
That's funny.
He says, Chris Brown,
Target, a little Wayne one said,
these coaches ain't loyal.
Neither of these programs.
How about that?
The fans are loyal, or they try to be in thirds.
The third, totally loyal.
Don't care, we love y'all.
Third, I don't trust y'all like that.
The middle third, that's where most of us live.
Derek Method, it's a simple thing,
and you're absolutely right in asking the question.
He said, playing devil's advocate,
what about the Danny Busbun Kelly?
We went out and got her.
although it was in her contract.
If Nebraska came a knock and she should go.
If it was in the contract.
If it was in the contract,
oh, so you knew this could be a possibility and a thing.
So walking in the door, go, listen,
is it in the contract permit rule that if Penn State comes calling,
and he can leave?
And if it is, why?
And if it isn't, we can stop.
Bach, is that fair?
again in the world that you're trying to set up and in college footballs needed a commissioner 10 years ago much less now maybe but again you know again looking at Penn State and things that are going on they're playing in the current rules and the current allowances and so it's tough to say if it's fair or not oh man well we're trying to get like I think yeah what a horrible concept trying to get the fair the nerve the nerve to get this to be non-canes.
chaotic and fair, like that it speaks to a man's word.
Right?
Dadybuster because I said, listen, Louisville, I love y'all.
I love you like I love Nebraska.
But, hey, for the immediate time, I'm all in unless they call.
And if they call, we got to have another conversation.
I'm fine with that.
You know, Becky, hey, listen, DP, I love you, man.
You know, we forever, forever.
but if Denzel called, we got to have another talk.
Okay, if you said it to me in advance, guess what?
I'm going to applaud you as you go.
I'm going to be like Louisville.
I'm going to be, hey, bye, I'm going to help you pack.
DeZelle!
Isn't the alumni thing a little bit odd, though, too?
Because I always think about it through those eyes.
And I get it, you know, help mold you into me and be that guy, all that sort of stuff.
You know, it's a special time in your life.
But isn't being the head coach it in a,
Nebraska also a special time in your life?
Couldn't that be, couldn't that trounce what you did in college 30 years ago, 20 years ago?
Hey, but there you go.
There you go.
Hey, is there anybody in recent history that we could draw that to?
Is there a point of reference that we could actually go to and ask those questions?
And how'd that go?
How did that go?
I appreciate Danny Busman-Kellie for changing the spectrum
for changing the vacuum.
Thank you, ma'am, greatly appreciate it.
We'll both.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I'm pretty sure Iowa State has spread over
or a number, right?
Appreciate you not reaching over the fence, man.
Appreciate that.
We appreciate it.
Eric, thank you, kind, sir.
I appreciate that you because DP are trying to speak rationalizing.
to a fan base who was anything but and you can send those cards and letters to Eric.
I was just reading the text.
Texas says,
I bet Signetti from Indiana is chomping at the pit to go to Penn State.
I don't know.
I don't know.
He builds winners and he's won.
I don't know.
I'll say this.
After Nebraska fired nine-win coaches,
they had a long time finding Bill Callahan.
And then the other time they did,
I mean, they arrived on Mike Riley.
So hasn't always been, at least for Nebraska's cycle,
those were not successful buyers.
I'll put it that way.
Hey, Bach, maybe it's the hiring process at Nebraska.
You got this one right.
You got that rule right.
You got it right.
For now, right?
You got it right.
So you should be able to celebrate that and live in that.
Because you reached an agreement.
You did your diligence.
You went through the process.
You reached hands across the table.
You met in the bridge.
You shook hands.
the bridge became one, became connected,
until Penn State Media Storm showed up
and tried to knock the bridge down.
And that's what I have issued with.
I have issue with it.
But I also want to say,
there's a way to set this so that never happens again.
I think we should try to get to that.
That's just my hope,
is that players can be offered an agreement
and have it be honored
and have it be a good agreement for both sides
that coaches should enter into agreements with programs
and have it be good for both sides
and that programs entering into an agreement
understand that quite frankly
you've committed to me for the duration of this contract
unless we mutually agree to separate.
All those things can happen.
I'm just a dreamer.
Trying to find a way.
