Sponsored by the Downtown Lincoln Foundation on 93-7 the ticket.
One-on-one with D.P.
Just added the Adam's character show, which will be coming up next.
We have a good show so far.
Lots of good discussion between myself and Austin Orman, who's in studio with me.
My next question to you, Austin, here is, how much did you get into the U.F.
in its first couple seasons here?
Zero seconds.
Not too much into it.
All right.
Fair enough.
My next question after that, I think you're not alone.
Would more teams help?
They are now adding an Oklahoma City franchise, which is set to begin in 2028.
It's part of their expansion.
They're going to have one more team.
They've been playing with eight teams.
This one now lead to 10.
I understand the difficulty in starting a league and having 30 teams out there or anything
that looks like the NFL.
But if you're going to compete with the NFL again, and of course, they're in a spring
league a little bit different, but still, obviously,
a national football league in itself.
Would that be part of what's holding you back?
Not necessarily.
No.
Part of it for me is I enjoy, appreciate respect,
have so many incredible memories and terrible.
We focus on the incredible memories from Husker football.
That is my main allegiance in the game of football.
I am a Colts fan.
They are not on my TV as much as I.
I would like them to be. I would like to sit down every Sunday and watch the Colts.
But out of market, don't get the game, not paying out where the sun don't shine for red zone,
just to watch the Colts. I like football. I appreciate football. I respect football.
It's not my favorite game to just sit down and plop on anymore. I can't say on the demographic for more football,
for minor league football or, you know, semi-pro, whatever, you know, in between college and NFL football.
Right. I'm not sure on the demographic for that.
if there were a team in Lincoln,
if there are a team in Omaha,
maybe I'd say, yeah,
I mean, I'm going to pull for him.
I root for him to win.
Maybe I'll get a T-shirt here or there.
But I'm never going to be as invested in that pop-up team,
even if the league sticks around for 50 years,
as I ever will be for Husker football,
as ever will be for,
probably even the Colts, right?
If I was ever going to abandon a fandom,
it would be the Colts.
Probably they're probably the first ones on the chopping block,
but that's not the kind of person I would.
want to be or think I am. So I don't think I'm ever necessarily going to do that. So I think I would
be more likely to watch at least some version or some portion of a UFL game. If there was a team
in Omaha, maybe if it had local players that were good, maybe, maybe not. But it would be kind of
one of those things that like, do I consider myself a Lincoln Salt Dogs fan? No, I'm not a diehard.
I don't go to every game. Hey, it's cool if they're winning. Hey, I like to go to games. I appreciate it.
rooting for you. I hope you do well, but I'm not necessarily like always invested in how they do,
you know, like, or even some of like Team USA's Olympic teams, right? Like, I'm a fan of Team USA.
I want to see America win things because America winning things is cool to me and sorry if
you have a problem with that, but I'm not like hanging on every single result for every single
team because America needs to win or else. You know, does that make sense? No, no, no. I'm absolutely
in the same same kind of boat as you. And trust me, I've thought about dropping the Cardinals as my
fan before as well.
It's just harder. I mean, if you,
if you try to do it and walk away,
I mean, you can't, it's tough to pick another team
because you've already, you know, you've already had all these years
with your NFL team. So it, uh, it is tough to abandon.
I know you have hopes. Maybe it's someday he can abandon the goals,
but, uh, probably not going to have. I know you said, that's not who you want to be.
So that's probably fair. Um, but yeah, I mean, it's, it's going to be,
it always was going to be an uphill battle for the UFL. Um,
obviously playing in the spring is going to give him an opportunity to get some
TV time. But, you know, new league, like you said, kind of just never going to be the standard
of the NFL. You don't have any of the history there. And you can't have new old traditions.
You got to make them in. You got to build it. Well, and that's it. And that's it. You know,
maybe they're building it. I do think that more teams can help because it looks, the more it can
kind of look like the NFL instead of the big eight, right? Or like just like a conference.
you know, the more outstanding it is for somebody to overcome the odds and win the championship.
When there's eight teams and one team wins a championship, it's like, yes, notable, cool,
but it's not like you're battling like you are in the NFL, NBA, and all these leagues with
so many different teams to it.
So, yeah, we'll see.
Maybe, maybe like you said, if a team comes to Omaha or Lincoln at some point, be a little bit more invested in it.
I like the stories, like the opportunity for more football to be played.
but you know I like that in Canada as well
I mean there are those options are there so
that are wrapping up for one-on-one with the P
