Back to one-on-one with D.P.
Sponsored by the Downtown Lincoln Foundation on 93-7, The Ticket.
We are back on one-on-one here at 93-7.
The ticket.
I'm Jake Boccovin.
Fill it in for D.P.
He's out traveling.
We've got Nebraska Women's tennis coach, Hermann, Dalmago, in studio.
We've been talking about the season this far, scheduling, and kind of some of his past and what got us to this point.
But now let's focus a little bit more on the season and where we are now.
once again, Nebraska, women's tennis, 7 and 2.
A little bit of a break here before conference play opens up against Illinois next Friday.
I say a break.
Is there more of a break?
Is there you get a little more failing time this week or is it about the same?
It's about the same.
You know, we are looking to give the girls this actually started a Sunday off.
You know, we won't have another basically weekend off until the end of April.
So it's, we've been working hard and we were on the road.
So if they keep working hard
The rest of the week,
we'll give them the weekend off
and then that'll be pretty much, you know,
that'll be it, you know,
and then we play every weekend then.
So the biggest part is,
it's kind of like a little bit of rest,
but getting healthy, you know,
small little things here and there
that some players have,
so it's good to reset.
We usually almost never take two days off.
So it's one of one of those things that,
you know, it's needed.
Yeah.
And then so we're doing that and then hopefully get healthy plus recharge and kind of reset a little bit and then get ready for conference play.
You know, we basically are both Illinois and Northwestern.
Both teams are really good.
They basically have an end-sled, you know, you know, roster and Illinois made it.
You know, I think they weren't around last year too.
So they're both both really good.
So you'll be a good challenge for us.
And then we'll see if, you know,
the team has been competing, competing well, practicing well.
And I think as we get healthy,
I think we can keep pushing a little more.
And we'll see what we go.
We're looking forward to it.
Yeah, yeah, it's going to be fun.
A reminder to folks out there.
I always want to say this because I didn't know.
And now that I've,
I've been to the Sitt and Hazel Dillon Center,
a tennis center, it is free.
You can go to these matches for free.
You get a perfect view from at least the indoor.
I haven't been to outdoor yet.
Yeah, you know, next weekend we kind of look at, depending on the weather,
it looked like Friday could be indoors, but Sunday could be outside.
Okay.
We play Friday night at 5 p.m. free admission.
I think the Friday night matches will be, the concessions will be open.
I think the beer will be off for sale.
So that will be good, you know.
But yeah, free.
We always have some promotions, some giveaways, you know, pretty much every match.
So, yeah, come support.
I think you will like what you see.
know, Friday night at 5 p.m. I think Sunday's at 12. Again, free admission, hopefully Sunday
we're outside and enjoy a little bit of the nice weather. Yeah. And so just so people know, too,
because not everybody might not know exactly what to expect from a tennis match when they get there.
And I think that might scare some folks. I'm no, no tennis expert. I went. I had a great time.
I'm going to go again, certainly several times. But, you know, I think that might scare some people
away. Like, okay, free, obviously.
Everybody loves that.
So you, that's something that you got them there.
Yeah.
But they might be so, okay, well, what am I, what am I walking into here?
What is, what is a matchup against Illinois or anybody?
Look.
Yeah.
So we start off with three doubles, three course doubles, one set.
So it goes, it's a high energy, high intensity, fast points, play, you know,
that lasts about 30 minutes to 45 minutes of doubles.
The team that wins two out of those three doubles earns a point.
You know, so it starts basically singles with one, you know,
know, once you're up, and then you play six singles, two or three sets.
The same, we play no add scoring, so points go a little quicker, games go a little quicker.
Singles usually last about two hours.
And then whoever, each singles is one point, and then whoever, at the end of the match,
whoever wins four points, at least four points, wins the match.
But matches are, you know, high energy, very competitive.
Every match that you watch, it kind of has their own story behind it, pretty much, you know,
you know, the matchups, the, the personalities, all that.
So you can sometimes gravitate to more one than the other.
So matches at a little more high intensity.
Some others are, you know, a little longer points.
Some others are shorter points.
Sometimes people like tennis, you know, sometimes they gravitate towards a stallow game at times.
Or energy or how loud a person is or, you know, how they fight, how they hustle.
You know, some others are more quiet, you know.
But, yeah, so you get to see a little bit of everything.
and they're very competitive.
They're, you know, they kind of live it all in the core for each other, for the team, you know.
So, you know, whatever you're watching, I think you'll be, you'd be happily surprised.
I think the level is high and hopefully, you know, we'll come up on top.
Yeah.
How much of this goes, of course, we're talking about the teams and the big 10 coming up.
And certainly that's a good conference.
Just kind of wondering with the college sports at large, right, there's all these transfers and stuff going on.
How much scouting do you have to do or does it take when you go into these teams?
And do you know most of their rosters or are they kind of fresh every year?
Yeah, I mean, they have a free fresh that sometimes you don't see them at all.
And then we're no one of those sports where you kind of exchange tape as much, you know,
like give me the tape for another matches you have.
I mean, it doesn't happen as much in tennis.
You might have tape from previous years if you have former players, you know,
players that played last year, if you have that.
But there's some of them we see them
original, so we see them at some tournaments
so we know some about them
and then some models we don't. So we go
on those matches blindsided, you know,
so we go
we go not knowing anything about them. And sometimes, you know,
you try to want to call some coaches that are friends,
you know, you were like, hey, you play this team, you know,
what do you think about these players? And sometimes
they give you this, some know, sometimes
they don't, you know? It's kind of
like based on that, but
even though you know those players,
so you know that and then you still have to
play your lineup based on your order of ability.
You know, we can kind of like, you don't suppose to play your lineup, you know, based on
matchups.
Okay.
That's kind of one of the rules in tennis.
You can to an extent, but most of the time, you know, even though it could be a bad matchup,
but that player's been playing at that spot and then the same, you kind of like at the
mercy of that, you know, so you have to leave them.
But at least you know that player and you know a little bit how they play, their strength
and weaknesses and some tendencies they have
and then you try to prepare your players for that.
But yeah, I mean, we scout and we try to get notes
and we try to watch film of the players that we have.
But then, and sometimes we don't have anything.
And then you go in just, you know, learning kind of as you fly.
As you play that much, you be like, oh, I noticed that this player,
you know, likes her back and more than forehand or, you know,
or steps in on, you know, little things of that
that you're like picking up as the match goes on.
and then you try to give some pointers as it goes.
And of course, too, part of it, too,
is there's multiple matches going on at the same time
for singles when you're out there.
How much coaching do you get to do during match?
I mean, how much input can you put in?
Yeah, I mean, a lot, actually.
We walk up and down coaches and matches.
We walk up and down matches,
and we're coaching between games
and sometimes between points.
We try to give them a little.
more precise, short information, you know, because while you're playing, you don't want to,
you don't want too much information. You know, you don't want to overwhelm the player with too
much, whether sometimes they have to do too much to win it or sometimes, you know, so we'll try
to keep it short and precise and then some players that need more information and some players
that need less. And then so you try to, you know, that's kind of my job as the coach to kind of get
to know all of our players to see who needs more attention, who needs less attention, who needs
more of a pep talk who needs a little more of a hard talk and who needs more you know precise
tactics and sometimes some players need more of that some players understand that a little more and
they kind of want to play you know a little more free and then you know we do that as well and so
yeah we kind of take it match by match and you know some players if they're feeling really well
and the matchup is great sometimes we tend to we tend to leave him a little more to for them to
play the match and then some others that you know in particular matches need a little more attention so
we stay on their core a little longer and things like that so that's it kind of it comes and goes between
matches and who needs that we always have one or two that need more attention and others so we always
know that but but sometimes depending who they're playing that day sometimes they need more or less
attention so yeah it is fascinating again jumping into the world of tennis here in Nebraska world
of tennis here with women's tennis coach,
Tremont Del Mager. Hopefully, again, even if
you might not know every bit about
tennis, if you're a Husker
fan out there, you want to go out there
and check it out. Your next opportunity
once again will be Friday,
March 6th next Friday
against Illinois at the Sid and Hazel
Dillon Tennis Center. And then
if you can't make it out that Friday, Sunday.
They got a match up with Northwestern
as well. And like you said,
could be differences between indoor and outdoor
as well, so that should be fun. Thanks again.
to Hermann Delmogro. Hermann, thanks for stopping in and giving us a little bit to know about
yourself and your team as we get Big Ten play rolling. Perfect. Thank you for having me. Yeah,
we'll talk to you here in the coming weeks that are wrapping up for one-on-one on 93-7. The ticket
coming up next, Adam Carrier is out, but we'll do the Adam Character Show, myself and either
Nick or Austin, maybe both. We'll jump in with it.
