Starting point is 00:00:00 Back to one-on-one with D.P. Presented by Beatrice Bakeray on 93-7 The Ticket and the Ticketfm.com. So I was trying to find, okay, so here we are, the Tampa roster, Tampa Bandits. Right? Let's see. I know some of these folks. Actually, I know a pretty fair amount of them, truth be told. Jordan Tiamu will miss being the starting quarterback.
Starting point is 00:00:48 Ooh. Yeah. Keith Mumprey, a receiver from Michigan State. Matt Burrell from Ohio State at tackle, along with Tyler Catalina. Here's a name you might be familiar with. Vinnie Popoli, son of Vince Papal. Oh, I was like, why do I know that last name? Why receiver from Delaware, who was also on this roster.
Starting point is 00:01:19 Jaylen Booth from Indiana State, Big Thumper, Eli Rogers, Lamar Rogers from Louisville playing receiver, Derek Dillon, a receiver from LSU, Corbyn, Kofusi, who I know that entire family, 6'9, 320 pounds from BYU. I know that whole family. There's some whoppers out there.
Starting point is 00:01:44 B.J. Emmons, and Brady White from Memphis as a quarterback. So I want to go through this thing. Let me see here. I'm looking at my team. Nick, who did you choose? Who's your roster? Who's your team?
Starting point is 00:01:57 Who's your USFL team? Who are you riding with? So me and Mark were just talking about this. I am going with the New Jersey Generals just to follow Mike Riley and Robert Diaco. You're so. Okay, let me see who's on the general's roster. Who did Mark go with? He didn't go with anybody.
Starting point is 00:02:16 Mark, if you're listening, you have to pick a team. Yeah. The quarterback, D'Andre Johnson's from Texas Southern. We like him. No, do you? Do you, Nick? He shows a lot of talent in practice. He spends a good ball.
Starting point is 00:02:33 Strong arm. He can make good throws. Great knowledge. He can make good throws. He just got IQ. Nothing beats the IQ. I don't know this roster is a weird roster. It's okay, though, because they have Mike Riley and Robert Diaco. If you pick the Philadelphia stars, you get Freedom, Akken Maladun.
Starting point is 00:02:49 and Josh Banderas, I believe. Okay, there it is. They start Saturday, don't they? The USFL? Yeah, Saturday. Saturday Sunday on Fox. Alonzo Moore from Nebraska. There we go.
Starting point is 00:03:02 There you go. That's who they signed. That's right. I didn't see that. You're going to get an Alonzo Moore, New Jersey Generals, Jersey? Maybe. We'll make sure the New Jersey generals stay alive. RICO, who did you take now?
Starting point is 00:03:13 I took the Birmingham Stallions. Stalions. We're facing off on Saturday. Oh, we are. What are we putting on the game? Lunch. I don't know. Yeah, lunch, sure.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Lunch? You still, you already owe me lunch. I do. I do. How do you owe him lunch? Oh, Bulls Nix's thing. Bulls made the playoffs. Nix did not.
Starting point is 00:03:31 I just haven't yet. I will. I just haven't. I would like Chipotle. Okay. I can do that. I don't. You know that today?
Starting point is 00:03:39 Sure. Send me your order. Alex. Thanks, Rico. Is it McGoff or McGough? I'm going McGoff, and I don't care what he says. You don't care what Alex does. From Florida International.
Starting point is 00:03:51 Your name is Alex McGoff and you're going to have to deal with it. Florida is International. I'm looking for people that I might know. Not like no, like personally, but know like I've heard their name and it's very hard to. Victor Bolden Jr. I've heard that name. Oregon State. Scooby Wright.
Starting point is 00:04:06 There we go. Scooby Wright. My guy. Arizona. Yep. Scooby Wright, third. He led the nation in tackles his senior year. That's hilarious.
Starting point is 00:04:14 Nice statistic there. Love him. Pittsburgh Mallors. Pittsburgh Mallors, their quarterback, Josh Love, San Jose State. I thought about becoming a fan of the Michigan Panthers just because I also thought about that. I mean, they have Shea Patterson, so that was a name I recognized. And I'm somewhat of a current player. You know, immediately I'm feeling bad for the defensive players in this league because they're not getting much hype.
Starting point is 00:04:41 So I'm on the, I'm on the Philadelphia Stars. Okay. They're starting quarterback, Brian Scott from Occidental College. Occidental. Occidental. Actually, it'll end up being Case Cookens. Cooks. Case Cooks from Northern Arizona.
Starting point is 00:04:59 Man. Some of these rosters, man. Bug Howard Tide-end from North Carolina. There we go. Josh, actually, yeah, Josh Bandares. Inside linebacker. Nebraska. Freedom Mak and Maladun.
Starting point is 00:05:13 Defensive end. Nebraska. Listen to this. Listen to this. So I looked up the most exciting U.S.S.F.L players. Ooh. What do we do? Number one comes in with Shea Patterson.
Starting point is 00:05:27 He was the number one overall selection. The NFL comp, Russell Wilson. Mark wants the mallers. Who's that? The Pittsburgh Mallors? He wants the Mallors. All right. I'm going to look up.
Starting point is 00:05:40 Yeah, the Pittsburgh Mallors. I'll look up the roster for you, Mark. Head coach Kirby Wilson. Oh, the generals have. Mike Weber from Ohio State. Oh, yes. Mark gets Kyle Aletta, the Richmond Spiders quarterback. He's going to take him all the way.
Starting point is 00:05:56 Oh, yeah. He might. He can spin it. He's good. Some of the other exciting players, Paxton Lynch. Oh, okay, so Michigan Panthers, how about their selections at quarterback? They have Shea Patterson and Paxton Lynch. Two guys.
Starting point is 00:06:13 Two names that I know. Yeah. Exactly. So the Pittsburgh mallors have Kyle Laletta, and that is the only name that I know. The Tampa Bay Bandits have the quarterback turned wide receiver, John Franklin, the third. Love him. He is compared to Stefan Diggs. He's great.
Starting point is 00:06:33 You got to compare to somebody. The New Orleans Breakers, head coach Larry Fedora. They have. Let me see if I can find a name. Johnny Dixon, wide receiver, Ohio State. know that name. Really? I don't, but he's from Ohio
Starting point is 00:06:49 State, so I assume people know who he is. Is that wrong? Should I not assume that? I didn't know who Johnny Dixon was. The funny thing is, I'm going to watch. Oh, 100%. So their quarterbacks are Kyle Slaughter, northern Colorado, and not slaughter like the cool slaughter.
Starting point is 00:07:11 It's SLOT-E-R. And Zach Smith from Tulsa. Zach Smith, the most basic name out there. Eric says, how does Mike Riley keep getting work? Hey, people. What is this secret? Unlimited hip hip hip hip, hip, hooray. We're going to Kendrick Lamar, boys. No.
Starting point is 00:07:31 People forget. Mike Riley was 17 and 17 at Nebraska. We have any. No, they don't forget. People never. He was perfectly 500. He was perfectly good. People will never forget.
Starting point is 00:07:44 So in that fraudulent season, he started 7 and no and Nebraska was a top 10 program. All right, D.P., we haven't even covered your team yet, the Houston gamblers. Let's go! Head coach, Kevin Sumlin. Oh, that's why I... Them's my boys. I do love Kevin Sumlin. All right. You like Kevin Summins.
Starting point is 00:07:59 I love Kevin Sumlin. Interesting. What is nothing? No, no. No, no. Hold on. I like Texas A&M. Kevin Summ. I did not like Arizona, Kevin Summ. He was set up for failure in Arizona, but... But, DP's going to love this. No one succeeded in Arizona. Exactly. That's good point.
Starting point is 00:08:14 He's going to love this. Possible starting quarterback. Give me. Clayton Thorson. Go, let's go, baby. Let's go. The Midwestern gunslinger. The Midwest Gunslinger.
Starting point is 00:08:27 Is this the league of failed Broncos quarterbacks with, with all of them? Trevor Simeon. But no, also you have Paxton Lynch in there. Oh, no. Like, I mean, I think, I think this is the league. Failed Broncos. We'll see, we'll see Drew Locke in the USFL next year. Oh, it's coming.
Starting point is 00:08:40 It's coming. Somebody asks, when is Tebow good sign? That's a good question. A few minutes. So the thing is, I know absolutely nobody else. Actually, that's a lie. Isaiah Zuber, Kansas State. Is Josh Rosen destined for the U.S. NFL?
Starting point is 00:08:56 Dude, Josh Rosen. Or the, yeah, that's true. Josh Rosen is just a career backup in the NFL. He's a, I don't even know if I'd put him as a backup. I mean, he's a, he would. He flirts as a practice squad third string guy right now. No, there's some really bad backup quarterback. That's a good point.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Well. Not every team has a Josh McCown. Adam, Missouri. Yeah, they literally all do. Not every team has a Ryan Fitzpatrick. Who's the backup in L.A. right now? He's been there for, I think he's from Missouri. He's been a backup quarterback for like, yeah. He's been a backup for like 14 years. You also have Blaine Gabbart who started. He was a starter for a while, but now he's with the 40s. Would Chase Daniels start for your USFL team?
Starting point is 00:09:42 Yes, I don't know who might You haven't seen Chase actually throw football It's true But I But I know Chase Daniel Everybody knows Chase Daniel I'm comfortable with Chase Daniel He's the guy
Starting point is 00:09:53 He's the guy down the street Yeah He's like hey Chase You can see him like if you didn't see him in a jersey You wouldn't know Like Chase Daniel's just the guy that's just Mowing his lawn And you walk by and you're like hey Chase
Starting point is 00:10:04 And he's like hey how are you And he stops mowing his lawn He comes talk to you for a little bit You talk for about five minutes And you're like all right I keep going He goes all right I have a good one His lawn's just perfectly
Starting point is 00:10:12 manicured. And you forget that he's starting, he's a starting quarterback for you to do that. And then he's gone like every Sunday and you're like, oh yeah, he's on the sideline for the chargers. He's on TV. So I would not take Chase Daniel because the New Jersey Generals drafted
Starting point is 00:10:28 Ben Holmes with the fourth overall pick from Tarleton State. So you wouldn't take Chase Daniel. I would not. Not over fourth overall pick and former wide receiver at Orchard Park High School, Ben Holmes. Okay. I think we've covered everybody's teams and we know nobody.
Starting point is 00:10:48 This is going to be awesome. I love it already. We're going to do a Monday morning report, USFL report. Oh, yeah. Everybody needs to know how their team did, what happened, and all that. Yeah, USFL round table. All right. Time to get some gear.
Starting point is 00:11:03 937, the USFL. Oh, yeah, but the gambler's gear. I'm going to have gamblers gear. Yeah, I'll probably get jerr. I wish I could get like a Robert Diaco. I'm going to get the Jim Kelly. I need some Birmingham Stallions gear. We have Skip Holtz is our head coach.
Starting point is 00:11:20 Wow. Hell yeah. Hell yeah. You know about Skip Holtz, baby. We have, so we have Peyton Ramsey, but it's not that Peyton Ramsey. No, it's another one. It's a wide receiver, Peyton Ramsey, with a Z from Tuskegee. Yeah, he's definitely not the same
Starting point is 00:11:42 Paine Ramsey. He's definitely not the same one. I need a Victor Bolden Jr. Jersey. Ah, Vic Bolden. I recognize the name. Oregon State. Yeah, I know.
Starting point is 00:11:52 I recognize the name. I don't know who he is. I recognize the name, though. Actually, no, never mind. Scooby Wright. I always forget. Scooby Wright's there. The New Jersey Generals
Starting point is 00:11:59 really need to work on their their t-shirt design. Are you looking up? It just says New Jersey Generals. It really is awful. I mean, let me just go to artifacts or whatever. and make screen print one.
Starting point is 00:12:11 I could probably iron that on at home. That's why I looked at it. I went, wow, what were they thinking? Look at it. And he picked the breakers. The breakers, first of all, those are the worst helmets. I didn't. I gave up on the breakers.
Starting point is 00:12:23 I'm a stallions guy now. Yeah. Oh, of course. Since day one. Yeah. Always have been. Well, you have to learn their history, though. Do I?
Starting point is 00:12:32 Yeah, to learn who the greatest stallions in history are. Who are the greatest stallions in history? Reggie Collier. From Auburn. Right. All right. These Birmingham Stallions gear looks awful. Okay, so we should figure out who the best coach is in the USF.
Starting point is 00:12:47 Skip Holtz. We have Todd Haley, Jeff Fisher, Kevin, someone like we talked about, obviously Mike Riley. Skip Holtz? Yeah, is Skip Holtz the top coach there? Heck yeah, he is. Okay. Do you know what Skip Holtz has done?
Starting point is 00:13:06 So, Gene Chiswick is the head coach? Where? Kirby Wilson Oh Skip Holtz replaced him Yeah And he's a general manager I love it here So are you ready
Starting point is 00:13:21 Skip Holtz boarded 19 March 12th 1964 The whole Wikipedia page Yeah the whole Wikipedia page His playing career He was a wide receiver for Notre Dame back in 1986 That's it just 1986 Wonder how that happened
Starting point is 00:13:35 Yeah So interesting how he got to Notre Dame I love information. Then he was a grad assistant for Florida State. Colorado State, Notre Dame, Notre Dame, UCon, South Carolina, East Carolina, South Florida, Louisiana Tech from 2013 till last year, and those are the Birmingham Stallions.
Starting point is 00:13:56 Skip Holtz, baby, head coaching record, 152 and 121. I looked up Skip Holtz-Burmingham Stallions, and the first thing that comes up is a headline that says, The Skip Holtz, higher, isn't a sexy one, but he's a decent pickup for the league. Wow, that is basically saying you're the last one at the bar. Oh, I'm sorry. Do any of your head coaches have a father who's a Hall of Famer?
Starting point is 00:14:18 No. Yes, they all do. That's how they get the job. That's right. Mike Riley's been reunited with his defense accordion. Mike Riley has been reunited with his defense accordion. Mike Riley is a Hall of Famer. That is frightening.
Starting point is 00:14:28 This is. Is Mike Riley a Hall of Fame coach? What? Rico looked at me and I just knew he wasn't going to say it. You know what I didn't look up. You know what I didn't look up. look up because I would have started laughing. I would have to start laughing. No, that was
Starting point is 00:14:42 not going to happen. These coaches for so long. All those mediocre Oregon State teams, that one really good Oregon State team. Yes. Good grief, man. This is a career 500 coach. When Nebraska hired Mike Riley, man, I just never forgot that day.
Starting point is 00:15:02 The state let out a collective. What? What? So the Birmingham Stallion's back in the day, Rika, this is for you. Oh, thank you. I need this history. Nine and nine and eighty three. Four. What you know about that, Nick?
Starting point is 00:15:15 And then 13 and five. Best team in the USFL, baby. I bet Skip Holtz wasn't their coach. Their average attendance for those years was 33,000. Hoohoo. Each, Cliff Stout, moved from the Steelers to the stallions. And then Joe Cribbs, who was a pro bowler for the Buffalo Bills, also moved to the stallions.
Starting point is 00:15:37 So I would say those are two of the best players. Joe Kribs, relation to Josh Krips. But they won the first round game against the gamblers, began beaten by the stars. Dump stars. The Philadelphia stars? In the semifinal, their finest hour. The stallion's largest crowd of the season was on hand for a 1984 game
Starting point is 00:15:55 against the Oklahoma Outlaws. That was Doug Williams and the Outlaws. Wow. Yeah. The expansion outlaws, a fair, surprising well, compiled a 6-2 mark. Oklahoma scored the game's first 10 points. Darrell Mason, they led the way.
Starting point is 00:16:11 They cruised to a 41-17 win for the biggest crowd of all time. So you had some moments. History. We had some moments. There we go. We're really out here. We'll forward to break. I don't want to talk about invest. $5,985 to each student athlete,
Starting point is 00:16:31 scholarship student athlete, who meets academic standards. Nebraska has chosen to do. do so. We will talk about that next. Watch live on Facebook, YouTube, or Twitch. You're listening to one-on-one with DP on 937 the ticket and the ticketfm.com.
