Starting point is 00:00:34 Facebook, YouTube, Twitch. A couple of things. There will be football this week. What? We don't know how good the football is going to be. But it should be interesting football. Do we have teams yet? Yes, we have teams.
Starting point is 00:00:59 No, I mean, do we, as a station, have we picked teams? No, we should do that. We should assign teams to people. No, we can't assign teams. We need people to just pick the teams. Should we bring people in today? Yeah, I mean, or we could just pick teams for them. Pick people's teams for them? We should. Well, maybe.
Starting point is 00:01:19 Well, maybe. The gamblers are mine. Okay, simple reason, right? Houston. Okay. Houston. Whatever. Right?
Starting point is 00:01:26 Makes sense. Who is, who was, so the generals, stallions, Panthers, stars, breakers. mallers, bandits. Eight teams. Rico, which one, you're going to be the Philadelphia star. I don't want to be the stars.
Starting point is 00:01:49 You don't want to be the stars? They have a couple of Huskers on their roster. I'm going to be the New Orleans Breakers. They have the worst uniforms. I know. That's why. They're awful. I saw their practice. Mark, get in here. I saw their practice uniforms. It was terrible. And I remember what they were back in the day
Starting point is 00:02:12 And they were terrible Really? Oh, they were terrible You think Mark can hear me I can see him get in the water right now Oh, he's ignoring you because, you know So they've got the powder blue With the dark blue
Starting point is 00:02:21 The Birmingham Stallions went white and red He's not looking Um, but they're So The stallions have a nice uniform Do they? It looks Are you going to go off the uniforms?
Starting point is 00:02:35 Well, I'm going off to history Because I'm old enough to remember Don't go off to history Because these aren't the same. Well, no, no, what I'm saying? Like, I'm old enough to remember these franchises as they were. And easily, the Houston Gamblers were the most fun of this group. Because they just, I mean, Jim Kelly and that offense where they just threw the ball around.
Starting point is 00:02:56 I might go with the Birmingham Stallions, actually. Stallions have a nice-looking logo, nice color combo. The generals, this was Herschel Walker and Crew, Doug Flutie. The generals have a black mascot. The star, they're the only ones that have a black mascot. mascot. That's hilarious. Did they, is there, is there New Jersey
Starting point is 00:03:14 General's mascot talk anywhere? Can we go on like Twitter and see what it says? Put in New Jersey General's black mascot. Okay. And see if anything interesting comes up. The Tampa Bandits who were, this was like Steve Spurrier joins
Starting point is 00:03:31 from back in the day. The Pittsburgh mallers were good, but they were, it was kind of, eh. Philadelphia stars were always interested because they had my buddy Calvin Bryant I'm playing tailback for them They want to name him General
Starting point is 00:03:48 Jolin Jolene No, I didn't know what I didn't know what like I didn't know where that was going Yeah I know no I know I don't know I know
Starting point is 00:03:58 I know Like what were they going to name The Black General No That's just what we You know what they're going to name them They're going to name him that guy. They're going to name him Jack.
Starting point is 00:04:15 New Jack. Black Jack. No, so this is the USFL rather than the XFL. The XFL is the rock in that crew. And the XFL went, you know, a little bit different because those are the WWE folks. But the USFL actually had a run and it had some substance to it. So, you know, the Sam Mills folks. from that era who put together teams.
Starting point is 00:04:43 Reggie White crossed over back in the day. There were a lot of NFL stars who went over to the original USFL. But they've come into this version of it comes in with some new folks, new rules. New rules. So the original USFL went from 83. to 86. It was canceled in 86. But here's some of the guys.
Starting point is 00:05:18 So Mike Rosier played for the Pittsburgh Mallors. Doug Flutie, Herschel. So you had those three Heisman Trophy winners. Hall of Fame members, Reggie White, played in the league, Gary Zimmerman, Jim Kelly, Steve Young, all played in the USFL.
Starting point is 00:05:39 Let's see. Chuck Fucina. Cliff Stout were folks who also crossed over. Brian Seip from the Browns crossed over Joe Cribbs, and the Chiefs crossed over Gary Barbaro. So they had some talent in the league. Sam Mills falls in that category, folks. So you had, there was a...
Starting point is 00:06:02 They tried. In the original version, so we had, in Washington, we had the Washington Federals, which I thought was the name that they were going to bring back for the commander. Like I thought federal's over commanders. Like I thought that was how that was going to play out. They were like, no, that makes too much sense.
Starting point is 00:06:16 The Federales. That makes too much sense. But they had awful colors. They were white, green, and black. Ooh, should have gone back to it. White, green and black. Should have gone back to it. But they blended it wrong.
Starting point is 00:06:26 Like it looked. Perfect. I need a terrible jersey. Oh, oh, well, no, this league, if you pick the breakers, you're going to get a horrible jersey. I'm not. I don't think I'm pick it there. That's all. Now I, yeah, I'm stuck.
Starting point is 00:06:39 That's it. Yeah. I'm stuck between the stallions and probably the Panthers. So I understand. Craig James in the USFL. We had Reggie Collier. We had Mike Hoency at quarterback for the federal. First game was played.
Starting point is 00:07:00 George Allen coached against them. He coached Boston. Chicago. He coached Chicago in the season opener in D.C. And they ran Chicago Blitz. and they yeah like bring that back please um team name the blitz right um
Starting point is 00:07:14 and then and then and yeah like and they just mauled the federals I think the federal is like the worst team really and so they were playing at our game people just weren't going to come see a bad football team like no but they watch the Washington football team all the time Marcus Dupree the greatest it never was
Starting point is 00:07:31 Bobby A Bear I watched that 30 for 30 yeah Washington's tailback was Craig James and we thought like he was our number one picks. And we thought, okay, we got our guy. He wasn't our guy. Tragic. Anthony Carter from Michigan. Bobby Abearer. I believe they both played in Michigan as well. So this version of it, again, comes into the gate with different rules. Some new innovations for the USFL.
Starting point is 00:07:59 Some new things you're going to try. A couple things. A chip in the ball to measure first downs, which almost makes way too much sense for every football. league. Like the chip isn't going to interfere with anything and it'll help you so you don't have to
Starting point is 00:08:13 measure it. Yeah, but you're making, you're mass producing a large number of football is a greater number of football and then is that going to happen?
Starting point is 00:08:22 Like, Twistly since America doesn't make it on football. You're already making the football just put a chip in it. Okay. It'll be fine.
Starting point is 00:08:28 Good luck with that. 16 players miced up every game. That's a lot of microphones. That is. That's a lot of blue language. A lot of danger.
Starting point is 00:08:37 A lot of, A lot of making sure that the microphones are off. Danger, danger. Any particular eight on either side? It does not say. Just 16 players miced up every game. So we want the quarterback. Obviously.
Starting point is 00:08:51 Running back? Yeah. A receiver? A receiver. Center, probably. No, I want the left tackle. And I want the guy going against him. Because the center is going to come up and make play calls.
Starting point is 00:09:05 He's going to make block calls. I guess. They're going to need a. Do you want that? 57's the mic. So, okay, do you want the mic? Do you want the mic that players to be Lucille? Calling plays and like, you know, you get more of the intimate football knowledge.
Starting point is 00:09:20 Or do you want the guys to give you more content? Week one, quarterbacks are going to get it every game. They can give you content anyway. Yes. Middle linebackers, like I need the guy from the program mic'd up. Mm-hmm. They've been a lineback. Hey, you, you didn't think I was going to go fired.
Starting point is 00:09:41 You don't want to get my sister pregnant. Yeah. We need that guy. You have to find the weirdest guy on the team. Safety. Safety. One corner, one defense, like a pass rush. Edge lineback.
Starting point is 00:09:54 If it's a bad team, I want to. Because it can't be the nose tackle, because then you're just going to get the center and the nose tackle talking to each other the whole time. If it's a bad team, I want the punter. I want the kick returner. Well, that might be one of the receipts. receiver's the running back.
Starting point is 00:10:09 I want the kick turn because he's back here going, oh, my goodness. Oh, block, block, what's happening? And you'll hear all the sounds of him running. Yeah. Got you. And then the thud. Whap? Didn't get you.
Starting point is 00:10:24 I am the bat man. You'll get all the concussion calls. So, yeah. Do you want, like, coordinators? No. You don't want play callers? No. No.
Starting point is 00:10:38 You don't want to know? No. Give me Roger Blue, Jet Ram. Don't care. Slam banana. Don't care. Too much. I don't know what that is.
Starting point is 00:10:47 I don't care. Nope. Don't want it. I don't watch play calls. I want the players. I want the left tackle and the guy who's rushing the quarterback miced up. Give me a double weezer, jet slide, rhumbo. Don't need it.
Starting point is 00:11:03 You don't want anything. Don't need it. Quarterback will be calling it anyways. You don't want that. No. I need a coordinator. What's the coordinator going to do? You get angry.
Starting point is 00:11:10 Stop playing the leg called. That's not the play of call. That's okay. That's what you want is when you hear him call to play and then the quarterback goes in the huddle goes, ah, screw it. Yeah, we're not getting that one. We're not getting that one. You're going to run something different.
Starting point is 00:11:22 A couple other things. Two sky cams and drones. Drones. Where would said drones be? Not a, not a clue. Because you can't put it like 30 yards above because the quarterback will hit it. It'll end. It'll be.
Starting point is 00:11:40 You can have it behind the play, and then when the quarterback throws it, the drone follows it. So you get like a right over the head. Yeah, but then you have a batted ball and the drone hits it. Look, you got to have good drone control operators. Oh, good luck with that. Look, if you're a good, we had them in Texas for our practices. Yeah. Which, again, hoity toy, right?
Starting point is 00:12:02 High schools, yeah, high schools that have drones for practice. It's funny, too. I would send my friend's pictures of the videos from the Georgia. They're like, you really have, you really, really? You're filming? Yes, we are. So drones, behind the scenes. Okay, what else you got?
Starting point is 00:12:19 Two players with helmet cams every game. Ooh, USFO GoPro. Who gets the GoPro? Middle linebackers? Because I saw that, so they were doing their, their scrimmages. One of them was a wide receiver. It was a tight end. It was a wide receiver.
Starting point is 00:12:35 They were great. They were very bad. I was a wide receiver of tight end. And, you know, they were like, this is what it looks like to catch a pass from whoever the quarterback was. And I was like, I don't know who that is. So I don't care. But, you know, it was just, he ran.
Starting point is 00:12:46 It was like a three-yard, like, in curl. And it just, you know, hits him in the chest and he falls and you just see, like, bodies. I want the quarterback because I want to see what the quarterback seen. Ooh. See, I want to see what he's the running back. Because I want to see what he, like, when he gets the handoff, like, where, what hole. That's a, right, quarterback will get you some of that, because he's going to, he's going to handoff. Like, you'll see pre-snap.
Starting point is 00:13:09 You'll see all that stuff. And then you'll see him handing off and then following his play fake, like where his eyes going. And then watching the whole open up or dot open up. Do you want the safety or a linebacker? Middle linebacker. Middle linebacker? Middle lineback.
Starting point is 00:13:24 I want the middle lineback. If you get like a free safety, you can see everything. I don't. Yeah. You can see how everything plays out. Yeah. Well, Sanderson says this is going to be more about the production. the football now.
Starting point is 00:13:41 Here's the thing about football. It's not going to change in how you play the game. The football is still football. The players aren't going to be worried about all of this. It's just going to be something that they're like, hey, you're miced up today. It's like, all right, cool, whatever.
Starting point is 00:13:55 I'm going to play football. Whatever, I don't care. And the helmet cams aren't like, they're not massive cameras. I think they're kind of small. They're like to sit right on the bridge. Like, it's not going to get in the way or anything. Yeah, they sit right on the bridge.
Starting point is 00:14:07 So the production element is going to be handled by all them. The coaches, the players, they're not going to care. It's not going to get in the way. It's not going to bother them unless, you know, what you say, a drone gets hit by a football. Well, we're going to be one of those. Ruins a play.
Starting point is 00:14:20 But other than that, the football is still going to be football. Will it be high-quality football? I don't know. But it will be football. Well, I mean, it's going to be high-quality football. These are all people who were college players and who have evolved into play professionally. Who may have made it in the NFL
Starting point is 00:14:38 for some length of time. Right. So, you know, there's nothing wrong with it. They're all supreme athletes. That's what it is. Oh, I'm going to be watching. Oh, so am I. I wanted to jump.
Starting point is 00:14:52 I got to roof my Birmingham stallions. Yeah, ask Nick who he wants to. So the way this works, pay structure will be $45,000 for active roster players, $15,000 for practice players, and $600 a weekly. during training camp. So they're getting $600 this week
Starting point is 00:15:11 and then they'll get paid. Players will also receive win bonuses of $850 per win and $10,000 bonus for winning the championship. Oh, incentives. I love incentives. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:27 So $4,500 and how long is the season? $45,000. I think each team plays each other twice. There's eight teams, so 14 games. there are 10 weeks. 10 weeks, so I was wrong. So they're getting 4,500 a week. Wait, 10 weeks.
Starting point is 00:15:47 10 weeks? 8 teams, 7 teams if you don't count your own team. So within your conference, you're playing those people. Eight, and then you play. So you play in your conference. Twice. You play everybody in a conference. Twice, eight, nine, 10.
Starting point is 00:16:02 Yeah, and then you play the other once. Okay. Okay, now that makes sense. So, and then I love the fact that, again, through a lot of this. So Saturday at 6.30 on Fox, and then Sunday, NBC, USA, Fox Sports, and then USA Fox Sports FS1. So it's going to be available everywhere.
Starting point is 00:16:26 They're only playing in Birmingham, I believe. Yeah, it's one. Everybody goes there. Everybody's there, no travel, none of that stuff. You don't have to worry about it. Which, I get it. because you save money that way, but it's just the teams in the cities, it's like...
Starting point is 00:16:44 Well, you don't get the fans for it. Yeah, you're not really... You're the New Orleans Breakers, but you're never in New Orleans. Yeah, that's kind of... That would suck. It's weird. That would suck a lot.
Starting point is 00:16:57 Because you're a team, you know, you're like, yeah, I'm going to root for this team, but they're never in your city. You have to go to Birmingham. They're not really good. Like, you're a New Jersey Generals fan. You have to go to Burmings. Ham to watch them play.
Starting point is 00:17:12 I like I like the idea of it all being in one place for a league just starting off. You know, you're not trying to spend so much money on travel. So you're saving money that way. But the fan support is going to be hard to come by because they're never going to see the players. Well, I mean, it's going to be fine if you're winning. People are going to attach to it. Yeah. USF all players and staff will also be able to receive college degree tuition free and debt free.
Starting point is 00:17:38 through a partnership with for-profit universities they will be able to take classes online or in person to get degrees and such. Fox Sports owns the league and is reportedly committed $200 million over three years to its operations. So if you burn through that kind of money and you're not traveling and you have one stadium
Starting point is 00:18:02 and no overpayee, you really have a shot to succeed. with plans to attract an additional $250 million from investors. For the 2022 season, tickets will be sold at $10 a person with children aged 15 and under free. Wow. Right? That's how you build a fan base.
Starting point is 00:18:24 Right? How about that? Here's some more, right? Ready for this? There will be no chain crew. So the microchip... That's what the chip is for. The microchip will just track everything.
Starting point is 00:18:34 It'll transfer straight. similar to NFL's next-gen stats to pinpoint location. You see, the technology may not be more accurate than the traditional train crew, but we'll see how that advances. The clock will stop for first downs after the two-minute warning in the second and fourth quarters. On punts, gunners may not line up outside the numbers.
Starting point is 00:18:59 They cannot be double-teens until the ball's kick. So you can get down in cover. A trailing team can choose. to either execute an onside kick under standard rules in Louisville kickoff or attempt to gain 12 yards on a scrimmage play on the offense's 33-yard line. I like it. Yeah, yeah. All kickoffs from the 25, no kicking team member may line up any farther back than one yard,
Starting point is 00:19:29 while the receiving team must have eight players in the setup zone at 10 yards from kickoff. Safety. Yep, no, no real. wedge work. Coach will be allowed one replay per game. He'll lose his time if he fails. But successful, he'll keep adding more challenges. I like that, and that should be a rule everywhere.
Starting point is 00:19:50 If you win your challenge, you should keep it. Defensive pass interference will be penalized on a forward pass play. No, no, no, here, a 15-yard penalty or spot foul within 15 yards of line of scrimmage. Yeah, I think it's theirs where if you tackle them, It's a spot foul, but if you just, you know, interfere, it's 15 yards. Yeah, pass interference rather than hold on. Yeah. Overtime will consist of teams attempting three alternating two-point tries.
Starting point is 00:20:22 Whoever has the most points after the three trials will be, tries will be the winner. If still tied after three attempts, overtime becomes sudden death, and the next successful attempt wins. Coin toss will be called by the visiting team. Whoever wins the toss can choose to go on defense. offense or offensive one time out per try. I like it.
Starting point is 00:20:43 Teams will have three options to attempt points after touchdown. PAT kick from the 15-yard line, two-point conversion from the two-yard line, or a three-point conversion from the 10-yard line. It's going to make these games a lot more interesting. But you're just going to hang on. The strategy just ramps up because you could be up by eight and they can still somehow win the game. I love it. Wow.
Starting point is 00:21:13 And they're also saying that the league has bought back the rights to the Jacksonville Bulls, Portland. So they may add some other teams. They also, the Los Angeles Express, Chicago Blitz, Bandits, they're trying to get rights through all these. Brev on the text line asks, is there a chance of Nebraska getting a team? There's always a chance. There's always a chance. But, I mean, who's going to pay for it? and then where?
Starting point is 00:21:44 Well, they play in Birmingham. They really do, don't they? Yeah. Well, I think if that's the case, then you're going to have to fight Chicago, the original teams from the USFL. Yeah. Well, they get first dibs, obviously.
Starting point is 00:21:56 Like Washington, Chicago, Jacksonville, they're going to get their opportunities first. But, you know, maybe the XFL for Nebraska. I don't see why not. Again, where? It's Omaha and Lincoln. it would be Omaha.
Starting point is 00:22:15 You don't want people in Lincoln. No, it's not that. It would just be Omaha because they would probably play at either Werner or TD Ameritrade. Because UNL's not going to allow them to play in Memorial Stadium. That makes sense. I understand that. And they're not going to play in a high school stadium, so they've got to find a baseball arena with large enough seating. I do understand that.
Starting point is 00:22:39 I do. All right. Well, toward the break, we'll come back. You know, NBA playoffs. So I'm going to get Rico's picks for the night, four games over the next couple of nights. You know one of them already. Well, but I'm going to have you make the picks. Okay.
Starting point is 00:22:51 Be official. So Rico's picks up next. Download our app by searching 93.7, the ticket in your app store. You're listening to one-on-one with DP on 937 the ticket and the ticketfm.com.
