to one on one with D.P.
Sponsored by the downtown Lincoln Foundation on 937 the ticket.
We are back here on one on one on 937.
The ticket once again, thanks to Nebraska women's tennis coach,
Ramon Del Margo for jumping in studio with us.
We got one more segment here with him.
And then we'll turn our attention those two hours of one on one here today as Adam
Kerker.
Well, I don't know if this is the reason why, but he had a birthday yesterday.
So maybe that's the reason why celebrating his birthday either to, or yesterday or today.
Happy birthday to add him out there.
But let's pick up where we start off or pick up where we left off because I thought that was getting kind of interesting.
You mentioned a commit or not a commit, excuse me, a recruit coming in.
And of course, we don't want to get in the details of that specific.
But just in general, what does a visit look like to Nebraska tenant?
Yeah.
Well, this one will be kind of sure.
We'll bring her on Saturday about midday.
I'm going to pick her up from Omaha and then come in and then go get lunch and we go on a tour, show her the facilities and around campus and, you know, like different places.
Academic Center.
She will have a meeting with academic advisor, have a meeting with our life skills department.
And sometimes they meet with our strength coach and nutritionists and all that that they kind of cover kind of all that we offer here.
And since it is a Saturday,
it will be just maybe one or two less meetings as usual.
But yeah, maybe with them.
And they talk about kind of what they want to study,
what the covers, what it looks like,
kind of the day on the life type of deal.
And then they go over some majors that they're interesting,
see if it fits their needs as well.
And then we give them tours.
And then we sit down and talk about kind of like our developmental plan,
what we can do to help them.
And what's our vision, what's their vision,
what they're looking for?
and see if everything aligns.
You know, and then, yeah, we go eat dinner.
We usually recruiting visits involve a lot of eating, you know?
Yeah, yeah.
Like whether it's the breakfast, lunch, or dinner or snacks, you know,
or go for an ice cream, you know, like maybe.
But I think it's more than anything is a time to like get to know them.
At times they come by themselves.
At times they come with, you know, with parents.
You know, this particular one is coming by herself.
And then so it's just a good time to just get to know them.
They meet our team.
they get to hang out with our team a little bit.
So sometimes that's a good time for them to kind of ask questions to them,
kind of like how things are here.
I think it's one thing to get the answers from the coaches.
And I think it's different sometimes when the answers come from the players
because they're the ones living in it.
So, yeah, we try to spend a little time and get to know them
and get just, they get just to feel kind of what we live, you know, every day.
And hopefully this is something that they can see themselves in it,
you know, maybe a photo shoot.
and little things like that.
But, you know, it's more than anything.
It's like, we got to make sure that it's the right fee for us,
but it's also a right fee for them, you know,
because we don't want, you know,
I'm one of those that I'm pretty honest and open about that.
I don't want to get anybody here that, you know,
that you get in here for what you say, you know,
but know what you do, you know?
So there's plenty out there that sometimes they get players to their programs
just because what, they tell them what they want to hear,
you know, and they get there.
And it's like, well, this is completely.
the opposite, you know, and then they're up living, you know?
Yeah.
So we'll try to always be open and honest and tell them exactly what we have to offer
and what we don't have to offer and what we're about.
And hopefully this is a place where they see themselves, you know, competing for.
And I think sometimes that's what you get the most out of them.
So just build them, yeah, just more building relationships and show them kind of what Lincoln has to offer.
Yeah, yeah.
Then, again, going back to kind of generally think about Nebraska, a lot of times we say,
you just got to give them to Lincoln and then they might love it.
How often do you, how often do these, I guess, how, what's the success rate, I suppose,
on bringing folks in.
Yeah.
I mean, to be honest, the success rate is a little lower than I would like it to be.
You know, we strike out a lot on just to get him here.
You know, it's because, again, I have a big ambitious and big.
big goals and I and I and I and I tend to go for the best players out there. And sometimes, you know,
they have the same offers in about 50 or 60 programs, you know, that are all very good, you know.
So yeah, it's like the goal is, is to try to get him here. And I think once we get him here,
you know, I think the chances go up for sure, you know. So the goal is, is to commit them to a visit,
you know, and then kind of will, we'll kind of take it from there, you know. But it's a, yeah,
I think it's tough from both sides, you know. I don't, I don't put it just all on them or just on
asked, you know, at times, you know, they have, you know, we got, we got a record here last year
that she told me she had 40 calls, you know, with 40 power four teams, you know, and a couple
of mid-majors within three days, you know, 40 calls, you know, and then she came here and
committed here, you know, and then some others do that, and then sometimes they're exhausted
when they go to your visit and, you know, they go to four or five visits in a row, and then
sometimes depending on when you get him, you might be, you know, I don't know, it's just one
those things that sometimes it's just like at times you know you you make it all about you know the
few conversations you have on the phone and then maybe a couple visits and then one visit on campus
and you know they make a decision just based on that which is it's hard sometimes you know for them
i think for us too you know it's that we we got to we got to really do our homework um because we don't
spend a lot of time with them and so and then they're going to spend a lot of time with you so you
You got to make sure that is the right fit, you know.
So it's challenging sometimes, yeah.
And it's interesting, too, of course.
It's also in recruiting around Nebraska, your stories of maybe avoiding certain weather days.
Is there, you know, tennis being such a weather-driven sport at times?
Yeah.
I could see that being a challenge.
It is, you know.
I usually like, hey, like, let me bring in a visit in January.
You know, like you don't.
But we actually had a visit for a very good player.
That's just for next year's class.
She came in in February, you know, and it was, likely it was, you know, only in the 40s, you know.
It wasn't snow in 10 degrees, you know, so it was good.
But, yeah, you try to, you know, but you also want to let them know that, hey, this is what we have, you know.
If you only bring them on a sunny day, you know, it always helps, you know, like this recruiter is going to come in and it's going to be high 70s, it's going to be nice weather, you know, it always helps, you know.
But, yeah, it's a challenge, you know, because they, you know, all these players, you know, I mean, the one that we're bringing,
and she was born in San Diego, California.
You know, so it's kind of one of those that most players,
they travel and they base in training bases, you know, at times, you know,
they move, you know, to be at a warm weather, you know, good location type of deal.
So, you know, we, I always say, you know, like we have all four seasons,
very well defined, you know, we have a winter, we have a fall, we have a good summer,
you know, and I spring and all that.
So it's like, and I say, hey, you got to be adapted.
ball to all conditions because you're going to play tournaments, you know, at times in all different
conditions. So I think this is, this will only help you grow. Yeah. Yeah. Now, another question I have
about recruiting, just because this year's cycle is kind of interesting and that you don't have a
whole lot of spots open. So, you know, going through the portal and all that, does that give you
a pretty good opportunity? Maybe like you're saying, to jump to the, the next class of your head.
Yeah. How early do you kind of start looking at it? Yeah, no, we're already have this is ready for
a class of 2027 so we're ready
offer players and we're already out there.
So I think now
with these rules changing the possibility
of players getting extra years
and kind of want to know, I think it changes
a few things. But
until we know that, we're kind of
recruiting for this year, for next year
and kind of, you know, here come
June 15, you know, we start for 2028.
Yeah. Which is kind of scary.
But yeah, it kind of never stops, you know, like yeah,
you recruit from different years, different classes
and different positions.
Yeah, it's almost like a never-stopping cycle, you know.
It's kind of year-round.
It's pretty much year-round.
You know, our sport, we actually, we don't have a recruiting calendar.
You know, the only time we cannot recruit is on signing week, which is the dead week, the same, you know.
So we only have about, you know, four to six days a year that we cannot recruit.
The other 300 or 3508 days, you know, we can recruit.
So it's busy.
And we always say there's
there's always somebody out there recruiting.
So we've got to be
we got to be busy just as much.
Absolutely.
Anything else?
What are going to go?
As we're about to let you go.
Thanks again for joining us.
What's in the next couple of weeks for Nebraska?
Yeah, I think it's just recruiting.
You know, recruiting, yeah, recruiting VC right now.
And then this is.
And then also all the players that just finished finals for us
and they're heading home and we're working, you know,
with them.
ready individually. So that time to develop and keep getting better and because they're going to go on and play some tournaments in the summer and go home and spend a few times with, you know, a few weeks with their families. So now is just working with them and then recruiting. Yeah. Well, hopefully we see you in here next week and Thursday. Thanks again for joining us this week. Yeah, I know. Thanks for having me. And yeah, go big red. Yeah, that's right. Go big red. We will check in on the big red coming to next year out in softball call to DP.
Maryland for the softball tournament.
We'll do that coming next year on one-on-one with 93-7 the ticket.
