Welcome back one-on-one on Victory Friday.
We always talk about getting on a bus, and we would send out the notes to the family and team, you know, schedule and whatnot.
and we always made a point that the return trip was listed and detailed as the victory bus.
It had to be said.
We'll get on the victory bus and head home.
We should ride back on the victory bus and X number.
Because that was always the priority.
Always.
Always.
But welcome to the show, bro.
What's happening?
I just took a little victory bus myself on the way back from Kansas City.
It was a fun trip. Obviously, the Huskers won.
And it was, it's been great.
I mean, it was kind of funny.
I was just telling Austin from the excitement in the stadium,
Go Big Red and taking over Kansas City.
We finally got the win.
We punched through.
Everybody's so elated.
I get to the car.
I turn on the post game.
I look at Twitter.
Everybody's so mad about everything.
And I'm just going, what happened?
You just like the ultimate buzzkill was the Husker fans' reaction compared to the stadium.
Hussar fans reaction.
It was so polar opposite.
It was completely different.
It was, it's mind-boggling to me.
One, because, again, ultimately, the ultimate mission, the ultimate goal.
Like, we get caught up in the distractions of all the things, all the numbers and, you know, fantasy, sports, details and data.
But at the top of everything is the record.
The record, like the scoreboard matters.
Like, the scoreboard matters.
You can talk about all the data.
of all the plays made within it.
But ultimately, the scoreboard will tell you how you did.
It'll tell you how you did.
And at the end of it, if you have more points to the end,
it's not how many yards you have.
It's not how many mistacklers you have or miss blocks or penalties.
No, on the board, you know what to keep track of?
Points.
Points.
And your ability to outscore your opponent is simply how things are measured and
depth of it, how consistently you do it.
Nobody cares what the point differential was.
or you shouldn't.
That's not a priority to the team.
The team is there to win the game.
The team's there to win the game.
The team is there to win the game.
And the fans feel how you feel.
But the expectation is what will ruin the celebration.
Your expectation will ruin the moment.
It means you're not present.
It means you're not present.
Like, I can say that all of my decisions on a day,
daily bases are about money. The reality is it's about the people. Are you happy, right? Are you
happy? Did you get through it? You healthy? Happy? Okay, cool. Now we can talk about the other thing.
Like, we can talk about the other thing. And so it's just, you're right. My, my friends, my football
friends around. So there's some guys in the NFL and summer coaches, summer scouts, that sort of deal.
And they all went, man.
gutsy, gritty,
tough,
smart.
Those are the things that were said about Nebraska football
by people who know football last night.
From the outside end,
the people who were just looking in going,
as football,
as football professionals,
gritty,
gutsy, right?
Talking about Hartzog, man, that's a tough kid.
That's a tough little dude.
I can go to battle with that dude
because he fought, he battled, he competed.
And that's what you want.
And they go, yeah, they're not the biggest team.
They're not the strongest team.
But they found a way.
And that is like the ultimate compliment you can give somebody, right?
Like, oh, man, you found a way.
So I'm with you in the sense that, man, leave the building happy.
Because that's what do you?
I mean, and there's, if you want to be a stats guy, like, you can pick point stats that you don't like.
There's some pretty good stats in here for Nebraska.
I mean, no turnovers, only three penalties.
for the first game, were the plays where there was close to tournaments? Yeah, that's going to happen
every game for every team. So, you know, I mean, I get it. There's, there's some things that need to be
short up. But again, it always goes back to me, like you said, what's your expectation? If you bought it,
if you drank the, the Kool-Aid, which you're a good fan, you might be allowed to do, but if you just
chug that Kool-Aid and thought, we're a playoff team, we're a championship contender, then you might
be upset about beating Cincinnati by three points. But if you understood,
this is a program that's looking to get to it hasn't had back-to-back bowl season.
I mean, you're looking to do that.
So, you know, and getting a win in a way that they otherwise, you know,
have the program for the last several years, several coaches,
has struggled to do the one possession down to the final minute.
And they pull it through and they get the win.
And they go back on it, be like, yeah, this doesn't look like a playoff team.
Well, it might not now.
And if that's, and that's going to be their goal.
they're going to keep trying to get there,
but everybody wants to be a playoff team.
There's only going to be a few playoff teams by the end of the year.
I look at it from this perspective as a coach and as an educator,
that not all students are 4.0 students.
And I can't have the expectation that they're 4.0 students
until they show me they're 4.0 students.
Most people, there's a large vacuum of people
who will go into an educational situation as a 2.0 student.
That's kind of the baseline.
I'm below that.
There are people that are below that.
There are people that are right around that,
and then they're people that excel.
And then it's the mission,
it's my mission to get them from 2.0 to 4.0.
If they get to 2.7, like if they,
you go from being a C student and you take an exam
and you get a B or C plus,
there's progress.
Like, I have to celebrate that.
It doesn't mean you're a 4.0 and I have to say,
you're not a 4% student. You're not good.
Yeah.
You're not good.
You're not.
Hey, you ran, you threw for $200.
42 yards. It wasn't 300 yards, bro. What are you doing? What are you even doing? Are you even trying? You held them to 69 yards. Why wasn't it 39 yards? You had one interception. Why not have three? You can get into that, into that space. And it's just weird to me that I'm as an outsider and I still consider myself an outside. Like looking at now I'm not really an outsider, but for the sake of the conversation of the people, I wasn't born here. That doesn't mean I have. I have.
and follow Nebraska football longer than people have been alive.
And followed it with some depth, like putting players into the program,
literally.
So, hey.
But what I will say is that at the top, the top mission last night was to leave Kansas
City with a win.
And it was just like I thought, here's what I know, walking down on O Street,
the people that walked in front of this studio last night,
celebrate.
Celebrate.
And it was interesting.
A couple of numbers,
Bach, just to say it.
They held Cincinnati to 16 first down.
16 first downs.
Nebraska had 23.
Advantage Nebraska.
Well done.
The rushing yardage was impressive.
But you gave up 200 rushing yards.
An average of 6.7.
But here's what,
what you didn't do.
You didn't give up touchdowns because of those rushes.
They didn't break anything long on you and bang their head on the scoreboard.
But okay.
Nebraska threw for 243 yards, 33 of 42.
Nine incompletions all night.
Nine incompletions all night and 43 attempts.
I thought it was interesting, right?
And you had two touchdown passes.
One critical, right?
Right. Big situation.
You gave up zero touchdown passes last night.
You got an interception last night.
You held them to 5.3 yards per catch, which by any football metric, that is the superb number.
Well done.
Total offense, Nebraska 353, Cincinnati, 271.
You gave up 4.9 yards of play.
Not ideal, but again, looking at the base, you did what you did.
you need to do.
You gave up next to no yards and kick return.
Special team stand up.
You need to be better about return yards.
Okay.
We'll circle that.
Three penalties, 27 yards.
You weren't hurting yourself in full.
Again, there are going to be plays where you miss a block, jump off sides.
That's just, that's why the stat line exists.
We do that.
who does it more, Bach?
inexperienced players, new players to the system,
new players, and a new environment,
and a new environment playing in front of a big house
at Arrowhead Stadium.
Punting. We're happy
with the punting game. Happy with the place kicking game.
Kick-offs. Hey, Bach, they were kicking the ball
in the end zone. They would kick the ball in the end of. Remember,
we used to, we used to, like, we were looking.
We literally went through campus trying to find somebody that kicked the ball into the end zone.
Well done.
Time of possession.
Time of possession.
39 minutes, 30 seconds for the Huskers, 20 minutes and 30 seconds for Cincinnati.
Third down percentage, Nebraska was 10 of 18.
56%.
Cincinnati, they converted for first downs on three third downs all night.
all night long.
Those are some numbers, man.
Those are some numbers.
So how you feel about the numbers?
Not really my jam.
Not really my thing.
Bach will go to break.
We'll come back where we reset.
We'll get into more of the numbers
because the numbers matter.
They're important.
And then we'll read your text.
We'll go up and down the text line.
Y'all deserve to be heard.
Y'all deserve to be heard.
As a matter of fact, you're going to be heard.
So load up the text time.
We'll read them all when we come back.
The one on them.
