Back to one-on-one with D.P.
Sponsored by the Downtown Lincoln Foundation on 93-7 the ticket.
On Monday, it's one of my favorite movie scenes from Do the Right Thing,
frankly's summer story.
And it opens and a big feature in it, the hub in the neighborhood.
It's kind of like this setup, quite frankly,
except for there would be an open window.
And the DJ is Senior Love Daddy.
Senior Love Daddy.
And the station is We Love Radio.
We love radio.
Senior Love Daddy.
Played by the one and only Samuel Jackson.
And on the lead of this day, it's hot.
Heat alert.
And he goes through.
It's like Jerry Curl alert.
You Jerry Curle's going to have to be careful today.
Stay inside.
No point of being outside because Jerry Currell has chemicals
and you'll end up with a flat top
with a black melted plastic hat on your head.
And it's a great open.
It's a great opening.
One of my great favorite DJ moments in movies.
There's a couple.
my uncle Pee D. Green
talk radio,
talk to me.
And then there's another one
Talk radio.
And then of course,
play Misty for him.
Clint Eastwood as a DJ.
And he has a stalker listener
who believes that he's talking to her
every day.
Yeah, the Clint Eastwood's I only watched
like the Westerns. Was he pretty good in some of the others?
Play Misty for me.
Yeah. Look, man, in the radio business, we would, before streaming and such, and before corporate radio took over, that was probably closer to to it than anything else.
What's the one? Eric Bogosian, where he plays kind of a Howard Stern-ish talk radio, rebel rouser, you know, who calls people idiots and otherwise, and it ends up catching up to him because,
the listeners aren't all fans.
You know, and it shows several of the things, right?
But yeah, the, the, the Samuel Jackson one is good.
Pedy Green was a DC radio and TV icon.
There's several ones, but I think the Clint Eastwood one
where she just lost.
Is it a horror film?
No.
No, no.
Well, it's drama.
Okay, yeah.
Drama because she's after him.
That's what I looked it up.
It's kind of like a woman with like a knife.
It's like,
it's kind of like misery.
It's kind of like misery where Kathy Bates is like,
you know, she thinks she knows the author
because of the way she reads the books.
And, you know, that's another one.
That's another one that one didn't go well for him.
No.
That movie's hilarious.
Right?
Like it's just like, wait a minute.
What are we doing?
We asked the question.
So if you could have, of all stats,
Bach, what's the one stat that if at seasons end,
you think the Nebraska has a chance to lead the Big Ten conference?
Is there a stat that comes to mind?
Well, it's tough because, I mean, I think most of them,
you're going to have a tough way finding yourself there.
You know, maybe again, if all things,
things go right.
Calander can open up the running.
I mean,
maybe you could get rushing offense up there.
I would say the closest thing,
and I don't have a whole lot of faith in this,
but, you know,
last year again,
the passing defense was up there
among the nation's lead.
How much of that was John Butler?
Was that someone of that Addison Williams?
You know,
you lose a few players,
but a majority of the secondary back.
I would say that's probably the one I would,
I would be closest to thinking,
but I don't know if that's,
again,
with Butler and,
you know,
some people thought that was like to a doubt,
detriment, right? You're putting too much on the passing defense, like you're protecting
too much and hurting the rushing defense. So it might not even be great that that's the case,
but I'd still think like the performance against Jade Maya, some of those teams is pretty
impressive. So that's probably where I would lean, but I don't know. It's tough to like sacks.
They're nowhere close. Like based on last year's stats, nowhere close to sacks or interceptions
or really, you know, too much offensively. So I guess I'd go past defense. Yeah, I'm not sure.
or what that is.
Hamin Bean says fair catches.
Lowest amount of return yards.
Which you shouldn't have this year.
Jacorri Barney should put up some numbers.
But that's if you're going to use him that way.
Like we don't know if they're their hand.
And again, so this will be a joke for as long as the bears are the bears,
that the bears are going to do what bears do.
The Chicago Bears and their idea that they're going to move to him in Indiana.
and if the Bears move,
the Chicago Bears moved to Hammond,
then the name should be Hammond.
It should not be Chicago.
And if the name is Hammond,
the nickname can't be bears.
The nickname should be the Hammond beans.
I like it, yeah.
Or the ham and cheese.
Or the ham and eggers.
Harrison hates it.
He hates.
I gave him the business.
I was like,
Hamon, the Hamon, the Hamon cheeses.
Not a big fan of it.
If they're the, if they move to Hammond, you have to change the name.
You have to change the name.
You can't be the Hammond Bears.
Oh, man, you can't kill the Bears, the Chicago Bears.
But they might be doing it themselves, I suppose.
Do you want the Bears?
The Bears are an iconic franchise, I think.
Are there bears in Hammond, Indiana?
Are there many bears in Chicago?
I don't.
I don't know, Bob.
The zoo.
I don't.
Which is why.
If you're not really that, if you're, listen,
if you're moving them from Chicago to Hammond,
you're disrespecting the Bears in full.
It's not Chicago anymore.
It's not Chicago.
It's Hammond.
It's Indiana.
I went through this when Washington moved to Landover,
Maryland.
They play their games currently in Landover, Maryland.
They think you should be the Landover Commanders?
I think they should have.
been either one. Land over nor the commanders, quite frankly. Well, yeah. Quite frankly.
And of all the names you could have picked, you, okay, what? What? What? That's what you were doing?
Okay, I'm fine. Would you change from the rights case? But you commanders, that's okay. Okay. Okay. I'm going to support you.
You kind of liked the Washington football team. Would they have that for a year or two? I thought the Washington
football team was, was right. I thought the football team, the football club, whatever. I thought the football team, the football club,
you know. Football club says soccer. Football team says football. And I would, I would have been
fine with that. Right. Ed. Their mascot is, listen, they have, so they wanted to honor the hogs,
which you could have just named them a hogs, right? You could have named them hogs. You know,
representative of a time in D.C. football. You could have done that, right? But that's their mascot now.
He's a hog.
the army helmet, right?
He's a major. He's a major in the army.
And his name is Major Tuddy.
That's literally
the mascot for the Washington.
That's actually pretty good. Major Tuddy.
Major Tuddy.
Is that a fan vote? That's going to be a fan vote.
I don't bach. Listen to me.
Do we, have we not learned
in history that when you give
the fan vote, when you give the name
of the franchise to the fans,
something really interesting is going to happen.
It may not be the best idea, but it'll be a thing.
I mean, listen, if they had a vote currently between the,
what are the three previous Husker nicknames?
What were they before?
They were the bug eaters.
The bug eaters.
Old golden nights.
Right?
And Husker.
Husker or cornhusker.
So let's take those four things.
right? Let's take those four things. So bug eaters, golden nights, corn huskers, and huskers.
Bob, if you had to vote for one to be the official mascot of Nebraska athletics,
what would you choose? Certainly wouldn't be bug eaters. I don't know how we got to that.
I would go with the Oscars. I'm willing to bet you.
that bug eaters football would do much better in the voting than you would think.
Unfortunately.
I, I, I, I, I, listen, I, I'm getting a pretty good feel for Nebraska sports fans.
There's a whole portion of them that would prefer to be the bug eaters.
Bugs.
Are you pro-corn husker or pro-husker?
I'm more, it's interesting because
the corn part kind of got phased out there for a while
but I think it's kind of back. I think corn husker
kind of more resembles when Nebraska was better on the field
right and then kind of dropped the corn with to us.
So the championship teams were the cornhuskers.
Yeah, I think so. There's still cornhouse. We just call them Huskers.
Well, but I mean, as fans talked about them in the championship
eras.
Were they, so during Devaney's era, they were cornhuskers more than Huskers.
Yeah.
Right?
But there was, there were Husker mascots, just Husker.
Like, it's not, you know, it's Herbie Husker.
It's not Herbie Cornhusker.
Well, and then they did like the script Huskers across the logo.
I think that really helped popularize it.
By the way, antelopes and rattlesnake boys also potential name.
Rattlesnake.
From back in the 1890s.
Rattlesnake boys.
That would be a pretty good one.
Are there, are there that many rattlesnakes in Nebraska?
I think in Western Nebraska.
Western Nebraska, but not in the area.
Would you be okay with the rattlesnakes?
Yeah, I think that'd be unique.
The rattlers?
Yeah.
Nebraska rattlers.
Well, not now.
Now I'm married to the Huskers.
But yeah, I mean, if we started over it.
maybe. Start something new.
Well, listen, it's
it's always open
for discussion. This is what
we know. If there's a chance to
rebrand,
now things are going well in the other sports.
If things were going like they were
in other sports for Nebraska football,
that'd be one thing.
If things are going poorly,
at some point it'll be a conversation.
Just reprint the whole thing.
Right. Well, listen, you're trying
they thought about a, uh,
a female version of the mascot, right?
Yeah.
Did they come up with a name for the female,
for Herbie's partner?
I think,
I don't know if it's official.
Somebody did.
Henrietta.
Which, by the way, too,
the fan boat,
very,
the most disappointing fan boat that I remember
is the Nebraska Iowa rivalry.
They were deciding,
like,
what was going to be the trophy.
And the Heroes trophy is fine.
It's just kind of a standard trophy.
There's like,
I don't know what it was,
like a pitch fork and some different things
they could have played for.
And the fan vote went with just a generic trophy.
See, Earthquake glue says this, and this is why,
because I've heard this statement and this feeling before.
Because I don't mind the term Huskers.
I just hate it when it follows Nebraska, like Nebraska Huskers.
Because it puk.
Because I've heard people say, it's the Nebraska Corn Huskers.
You can call yourself as a fan a Husker.
You can call a player a Husker, but the team, the team,
are Nebraska cornhuskers.
And there are people who really just feel that to their heart.
And I don't know.
Like, again, I'm a fan.
I'm outside looking in.
I'm asking you all so I understand.
Bach would say you to that.
I can understand that.
I mean, Nebraska cornhuskers definitely rattles off the tongue a little bit better.
I can only say this, too, having been to, like, the university of stuff.
If you are describing yourself as a husker or cornhusker,
It just feel a little bit weird when I've not, I haven't done anything with corn in my entire live.
I mean, I think I worked out in the field for like a day or two and they fired me.
But were you a detass.
Yeah, I detassel for a day or two and they fired me.
But that's what it would be weird.
Like go around the kind of be the out.
Yeah, I'm a cornhusker.
It's like, oh, really?
Tell me about that.
I don't have anything to do with corn.
I would like a full explanation of the difference between cornhusker and husband.
I would like a full.
I would, I need that.
We'll go to break one final second, we're coming up one-on-one.
