It's time to go one-on-one with D.P.
Sponsored by the Downtown Lincoln Foundation,
on 93-7 the ticket.
Boom!
A little Sam's house.
Sam's house.
But turn that up.
What version, whether it's Ohio players or red hot chili peppers,
I don't care.
But this is Sam's House in Washington, D.C.
Yeah.
They used to play by bar.
every night was a good night.
Every, a 350-pound drummer.
Just
absolutely murdering drums, man.
It was exceptional as well.
Botkin, sir. How the heck are you?
Hey, not doing too bad. Of course, you know, NFL gets into action tonight.
College football weekend through volleyball's up and running.
It's a good time to be a sports fan.
It is a great time to be a Husker.
It is a great time.
as you said, be a sports fan, but to be a Husker sports fan,
oh my goodness, you have every opportunity to glow and shine and be that.
You have the number one volleyball team in the country.
As a matter of fact, I think it might be,
I think we may be burying the lead in how big this is,
and how big all of this is.
And so we will spend some time today talking about it,
4-24-6-4-6-85,
started aiming to text line.
What to be a part of what we're doing?
Please, please, please, please.
Hit us with the what's up,
and we will include you in the conversation.
Wonderful.
Wonderful to be back.
Greatly appreciate it all the video streams as well.
Download, get it in.
There will be several situations this week
where we'll multi-stream.
We were multi-stream.
One of those being volleyball post-game.
to be able to post-stream, and we had to make a decision on whether to, so we can't do both.
We can do one or the other on Saturday, either the volleyball post-game show,
or carry the full three hours of Texas, Ohio State during the Husker game.
And we made a Husker, we made a Lincoln decision that we would go live with the
with the volleyball show.
But you can multi-stream, right?
So we can air the football game
on the brick and mortar while
everybody else is at Memorial
watching the Huskers beat up on
Bowling Green
and have
the volleyball post game show
as they get done with Georgia Tech.
I watched them last night.
Pretty good volleyball team, as a matter of fact.
Definitely a top
25 program.
And they've got some
they've got some bouncy happening.
But there's lots to talk about it in it.
But Bach, having been gone since,
since Husker Saturday,
I have a question for you,
kind, sir.
If you would, please,
hit my music.
I can say that about Lincoln.
We need to have him.
I'll call Hamilton and ask
if they can remix it to say Lincoln.
Anytime you get to pull a little Hamilton into into the broadcast, it's not a bad day.
Bach, give me the lead.
So let's say that I was sleeping all of yesterday.
Because I was.
I was.
Bach, to tell you the steps it took for me to get from my office to the studio will cost me later on.
that's how much pain is in my knee right now.
And I know, I kind of know what's coming.
But we had a big meeting I wanted to be a part of today this morning.
So I told Becky, you have to normally, you know what I mean?
I like walk and get my walk on and get, no, I'm like, no, you deliver me to the station.
Deliver me to the front door.
And so yesterday was just a day of sleep, just to stay off of it, bed rest.
here today.
Bach, kind sir, text line, if you would please.
What did I miss while I was gone?
Bach, what is the lead story currently in Lincoln, Nebraska
Sports? What is the lead?
Well, I think there was still reaction to the football game from,
from Saturday, obviously, you know, the Labor Day weekend,
you got an extra game there on Monday with Florida State and SMU,
but it's so interesting to get people's reactions to that game because certainly at halftime
there was probably been a half-time show right there would have been a lot of disgruntled fans
by the end I was talking to heresy said the post game show was rather uplifting you know there was
a lot of optimism so you know and then you know you just kind of see uh after yesterday too was
the uh the coordinators kind of going to it and i think one thing that's that might be i don't know
if it's the lead but maybe um a story that's definitely caught my attention was how impressed
Matt Rule and now Dana Holgerson, both of them were with Luke Lindermeier's performance against
Ohio, which for a lot of people, you know, stat sheets, PFF, all that sort of stuff, didn't
necessarily have it as one of the all-time great games of a tied-in, but both of them, who obviously
have coached a lot of football in their life, absolutely loved his performance. So, you know,
there's lots of takeaways there, but I thought that was an interesting one. What, what on the take,
if you hadn't been told that that was the rating
and the feeling about the performance,
what did your eyes tell you?
Well, the eyes told me that I wish he had a bigger number on to begin with.
The single digit numbers, you know, again, with bigger guys,
sometimes looks a little bit interesting or different.
But in any case, that was the start.
I did notice him getting a few blocks out there, right?
And that was, you know, I was among the many Oscar fans
that thought he probably should get a few more touches
toward the end of last season.
We got two in this game.
Look, look solid, picked up a first down there.
But I guess I didn't catch it immediately, right?
I mean, I saw a couple of the blocks that they were talking about,
and that's what they're excited about.
I mean, he's putting people on their butts all day.
So I saw a few of them, but maybe didn't notice as much as they did
and maybe going back and watching the film.
Yeah, I think you're all entitled to feel how you feel,
see what you saw what you saw.
and your reaction to what you saw was true.
I think we get into the space where we need somebody to tell us what we saw.
No, no.
Sometimes what you saw is what you saw.
And how you felt about it is how you felt about it.
Now, it can be justified, validated, or discredited,
depending on the moon where you decide to get your information from.
But if you are a fan of Luke Lindenmeyer in the passing game,
you have your reasons for it, correct?
You have your reasons.
A variety of reasons,
but you seem to think that or feel that the Husker offense
would always be better if the tight end is more featured
than have been years past and then weeks past.
So all of that to be true.
Now, if we said, you know, that some would, you know,
have gone off the deep end, right?
The great overreaction is,
you know, rule is the greatest running back,
freshman running back we've ever seen.
Easy, easy, but true.
Because for some folks,
that's the best freshman running back performance they've seen.
And it's the one that's of recent memory.
Bach, what say you?
Yeah, I mean, it's right up there,
again, especially with recent memory.
I mean, you go back to Mont Greens.
I mean, you could find some freshmen that's done some pretty good stuff.
in a Nebraska uniform, certainly, you know,
the Adrian Peterson's, the Maurice Grollets,
you know, all that sort of stuff in other uniforms too.
But that was definitely one of the takeaways from me,
not necessarily that he's going to be among those names, right?
There's just so much more to see there.
But that Nebraska has some pieces,
and it was specifically to me, him and Jaseer Whittington,
newcomers that look like impact players, difference makers.
And that's, you know, somewhat refreshing.
I know that, you know, in the transfer portal era, you know, especially with the, with the freshman kid, that can, that can be tougher to do.
But, you know, it is something that a lot of teams are doing routinely and having success with.
Not that Nebraska has completely struck out in the transfer portal, but sometimes it's just kind of been, you know, kind of steady as he goes, okay, this kind of blends into the team.
These look like, you know, maybe two of your best players.
And again, you don't want to, you don't want to get, jump to a conclusion right away because there's a lot to be seen.
but certainly two of your best players on Saturday.
Does it matter?
Fuck.
Does it matter who they were playing?
Absolutely.
So what degree of what you saw is legitimate?
What, like if you said,
okay, the Huskers performed at out of 10,
some would say eight out of 10.
you couldn't give them 10 for a variety of reasons, whatever your reasons are.
Some would say seven.
Some would say six, but okay.
Bach, what say you?
What to grade and scale the Husker football performance Saturday,
what say you on a scale of one to 10?
Well, again, this one was a tale of two halves,
but, you know, it ultimately to kind of put it together is what I absolutely loved.
And again, you hate to kind of go back to everything remains to be seen,
that's week one, right?
We don't know a lot.
I give Ohio more respect than most people do.
They had nine wins last year.
They've been a program that routinely, you know, can win that amount of games.
And it's in the Mac, sure.
But Nebraska, again, under Matt Rule, has not beaten the team that for the previous year,
won nine game.
So I could put Ohio, I give them more credit.
They didn't, you know, watching them, they didn't have any flashy, you know, big time
players that I thought, hey, that guy needs to be in the power four.
But they did a lot.
what have I expected, you know, an upper tier Mac team to do,
which was just kind of consistently play the game.
They didn't have a whole lot of penalties,
try to see if you can capitalize off of Nebraska's mistakes.
And they did.
And so you got to give them credit for that.
But what I loved about it and what remains to be seen is this part of it,
is what I loved about the game is Nebraska leaned on Ohio in the fourth quarter.
You just haven't seen that a whole lot around Nebraska recently.
And it's kind of sad because that's the blueprint for what to help win Nebraska championships.
So to see that come back was particularly enjoyable for me,
but then there's the question, right?
Is that because of Ohio's lack of depth?
Is that because of the heat?
Or is that because Nebraska had the talent and maybe the devil,
whatever you want to call it altogether,
to lean on one of the better teams, I think, from the match?
What do you grade this as?
You know, I'd probably go with like an, you know, eight out of ten,
like kind of where you started for,
from there it always depends.
Like if I thought Nebraska should be competing for the championship,
then maybe it's a six out of ten, right?
But if I think Nebraska coming into the year,
seven win program,
need to take steps forward this year,
then I can kind of arrive to at the age.
What are we,
what are we grading this,
this thing that we saw Saturday?
What are we grading this by?
Is it clean pallid zero zero?
Is it still with the bitter aftertaste of Utah
or the absolute gut punch of the final three games of last season?
Is it based on simply go 1 and 0, no matter who you play against?
Is it how good are we, do we think we'll be in the Big 10?
Can we actually compete for something beyond just a bowl game
or a low-level ball game.
What do we, what's the measuring stick for Husker football?
I think that I say the beauty is in the eye of the be a holder.
You've got all sorts of.
I mean, if you're kind of judging the team, like, you know,
you can do this, the NFL's opening up.
So it's kind of, you know, apropos is do you,
are you judging the franchise or the team?
Because if you're judging the franchise,
you've got, you know, 20 years of history that you're mad about coming in.
And hey, this looks like this.
And if you're judging just,
the team and that's what I ask people is to give this team a chance. You've got a lot of data
points on the on the on the history of the university over there and the coaches over there.
But this team is brand new and this team is undefeated. So you know, you should have some fun
with it. That's that's the whole point of being a fan and give this team a chance before you start
piling on. Well, there's the we just wait until the incomes. Now all that to be said,
I don't think that looks like a team that's probably going to beat Ohio State or Oregon or Indiana.
maybe compete with them.
They need to take steps forward to that,
but it did look like a team to me that's going to make me believe
that they can maybe beat, you know, Washington or Iowa or Illinois
or Michigan State and Maryland as they come approach.
So nothing's changed.
You're still.
Well, I would say that I have more faith at this team.
The goal now is 10 and 2.
And it's strange.
That's the college football rules.
Don't blame me for it.
10 and 2 in the Big 10 can get you to the playoffs.
I think that there's a path to 10 and 2.
When going into last,
into last week's game,
I was very doubtful of it.
Now,
still I'm not betting on it,
but I could,
I could,
I can see it.
I,
I,
I wanted to let that one land.
That, that,
that,
and it's funny too,
because there,
there are some of those folks,
Bach,
who would say that you're bad news,
Bob.
That's right.
Right.
Bach is bad news.
Like,
he's,
he's going to find,
he's going to find the end of the side.
Wait until they lose.
But what you just said was, and correct me if I'm wrong, that you see a path to 10 and 2.
I could see a path to 10 and 2 if all goes right.
If all goes right.
How often does it all go right?
It does not happen for 99% of the teams that are going to be hoping all goes right on their path to 10 and 2.
But one or two a year, you know, of those teams that are maybe behind the not expected to
make the playoffs, we'll make the playoff. Do we do, do you look at Nebraska and their performance and then
compared it to previous Nebraska. Are you currently again, clean palette looking at this team only?
Or are you looking at them while peeking across the fence at all the other big 10 teams on their
schedule? I wish it could be one. It's all.
I don't listen. That's why we that's why we have the conversation. We try to figure out what is what is,
what is and what it is and what we think it is. Yeah. As much as I just begged everybody to give this
team a chance. Like I, I think that is also part of the beauty of being a fan is that you do have,
you know, like this reminds me at 2004 for some of it, you know, five, six, seven, you can
always go back. And, uh, and that's part of the enjoyment. So I like being a fan of both the
franchise, so to speak, in the team. Um, but especially I thought it was, you know, comparing it
to teams like you said in the big 10.
watch Minnesota, I watch Illinois, I was watching all these big 10 teams.
And even though Nebraska didn't play Minnesota, they look particularly good.
But, you know, kind of the middle of the big 10 and see what's the rest of the middle
of the big 10 kind of look like.
Yeah, it became even sitting in the press box Saturday, sweating to the point where it was
really uncomfortable and then imagining what it was like to play the game.
And then the whole lean against faction,
the whole lean against Ohio,
lean against whoever your opponent is.
And then immediately my mind starts to drift, right?
Because I see a thing,
and then I say, can that be the actual thing often?
So can you have that kind of running game success often this year?
How many times do you think Nebraska will have that,
sort of success this season.
Brock, what say you?
I think that they, again, I think from watching that game with the offensive line,
which I think has some steps forward to take to that.
Metrol, we kind of pointed that out.
You know, again, I think you feel good about that against Bowling Green in North Dakota,
if you're kind of want to count them.
Michigan State and Maryland, I think that you're kind of in that conversation,
throw Rutgers in there of, you know, you've already beat those teams.
or maybe or just feel like you're a step ahead of those teams from previous years,
I think they could continue doing it against them.
I do have a concern.
And we have to wait and see,
but I've seen it before.
It's tough to go from seven and six to ten and two.
It's tough to go from seven and six to 12 and O and being the top of the big ten.
But we have some evidence,
don't we?
It can happen.
We have some evidence,
don't we?
But I guess my fear,
I guess,
would be that Nebraska looks athletic when,
and this is going to sound simplistic,
Nebraska looks athletic when they're the most athletic team on the field.
Yeah, I mean, listen, I think, and Texan, correct me if I'm wrong,
but I think that's a big, a big talking point,
a big indicator for Nebraska fans,
is that Nebraska fans simply demand that they beat teams that they,
that Nebraska fans think they should beat.
Is that a fair place to land that Nebraska fans,
in their intelligence, once you move past the passion, the fanaticism, you get to the intelligence.
And the intelligence says for Nebraska fans that Nebraska fans feel like or think or believe,
and I'm not sure which of the third we're talking about, that they are, Nebraska football
should be better than one third of the teams they play, period.
period, right?
Yeah.
Right?
So four of the games that Nebraska plays, Nebraska should win because it's just, it has better talent.
Yeah, better resources, history, right, right, and all that, yeah.
And then, and then the intelligence is required to get to winning that middle third of games.
right and as you said that's where you tell me whether it's Michigan state Maryland
Washington whoever Illinois right we don't know we don't know right we don't know right we don't know
but we think we know that Nebraska should do this thing that that that and then the
pack you beat the team
that you could be.
And then you beat two teams that, quite frankly,
you had to play well to beat.
And, right, that may be those teams
may have to come down a step, right?
Right, you got to punch up for one of those things.
You got to punch up, right?
So be really, really good at punching down.
Be exceptional at punching down.
Be perfect in a fist fight.
right yeah and then in a brawl where some chaos is required for you to get the result that
you need you need for the offensive linemen to be what you think you paid for right fair yeah
that calandria becomes the purposeful chaos that you believe he is fair yeah that the passing game
includes Lyndon Meyer gets
Hunter more involved
like you get the full effect of my goodness gracious
look at this group of four
and the running backs in the passing game
plus Calandria's mobility
creating issue and drama right
and then having a better understanding
of what his offensive linemen
want from him and expect from him
hey be where you say you're going to be
so we can block for you.
Right?
Running back, protect Calandria,
and then get out of the way
and get into the flat and get into space
and let a Calandria have a fallback weapon, right?
Right?
That's the safety zone.
Thank you.
Appreciate it.
And then the defensive line,
all of a sudden, those edges get home.
Right?
And you may not need them get home all the time,
but how about a big play once?
How about a strip six?
Yeah.
Right?
How about a batted ball that's a pick six?
Right?
We saw it against Colorado.
We understand what happens when you get pressure
and you cause people to throw erratically.
And then you get a playmaking linebacker
who comes off the edge and delivers a blow.
They put a ball on the ground and the Huskers get it
or a pick six on a slant route.
and then perfection in the special teams game, right?
Maybe you get a punt return or a kick return.
You win the field shift, right?
We flip the field better more often than the really good opponent does.
And you get a win or two against the better four teams in the Big Ten.
That's what we're talking about.
And then a bowl game could be win number 10,
and we will be perfectly fine with that, right?
Yeah, right?
So there's a path to it.
It's all in how we look at it.
And I think that's the shape-shifting
that is really going to have to happen, Bach,
is to figure out what will make Husker fans
and the text line happy Saturday night,
bold and green?
What does it have to look like
for Nebraska fans in the text line to feel like we can buy emotionally into this team.
I think it's going to have to be cleaner.
You know, there are, again, as much as we can got to get excited about some of the parts of it,
is that this was a close game, one possession game in the fourth quarter,
and part of that was Ohio taking advantage of Nebraska's mistakes.
There's several plays we can look at.
Obviously, you know, that made that the case, right?
The first play of the game was a big.
part of that. You know, Nazaya Hunter's decision to reverse a field on the, on a return didn't play
out. That wasn't good. You know, Calandria lost a lot of yards on some pressure there and had to,
you know, put him on a third and 31, your first drive of the game. The penalties. There were nine of them.
One of them took off a touchdown. You know, so there's, there's still a lot to clean up.
Don't get me wrong. And that's what I think the microscope is going to be on this week.
I think because Bowling Green lost the Tarlington State is one of the better FCS program,
but, you know, it is where it is,
that there's going to be an expectation of a blowout.
Anything short of a blowout,
and people will be upset.
But beyond that, I think, is to look clean.
You know, less penalties, less bad decision.
I will pause there because in my restful day,
my stationary day that was yesterday,
I had the opportunity to watch the entire Tarleton State Bowling Green matchup Saturday.
Do you want to know what I saw?
I do.
I will share that with you when we come back to one-on-one.
