We want to be where you're at, right? That is a, that's a Jackson 5 song. We want to be where you are.
Yes, we want you to take, we appreciate you folks who are out there, Pete Ferguson.
Let me see you've been, you and Kupsker and Craig, the usual suspects.
We greatly appreciate the family hanging out with us.
Along the way, it is a busy day in the sense that the world changes today.
The world changes today.
We all get a little bit more of what we love because the Hall of Fame games tonight.
And I am, I am like, it's like Christmas morning.
It's Christmas morning, the anticipation of what this year's NFL is going to look like.
This is what football is going to look like.
But we'll talk about that in the matchup first.
But Bach, let them know who sponsors this first hour.
Oh, yeah, Hour 1 is sponsored by Hamilton Telecommunications, bringing you the latest quality technology and communication services since 1901.
Whether it's residential or business, Hamilton has the answers.
visit hamilton tell.com for more information today.
Thank the folks for Hamilton for doing what they do and partnering with us.
And it is amazing that a lot of the emails that I get are people that are asking questions about being a part of like sponsoring shows, getting commercials done.
We do all of that.
I mean, the production side of it is pretty simple in that we can, if you have a business,
or an event and you want to promote the event.
You can advertise the event.
You can promote the event.
You can sponsor events.
All of that is in play.
And we like the idea that people can walk in off the street,
get a commercial produced, get it on air pretty quickly.
Plus, we have the ability to change it.
You can choose what member of the ticket family you want to voice it.
You know, a lot of people just walk in the door and they,
buy get to work get to work so you can't do that there are ways to go about it so we appreciate
folks that are that are that are in the in the pool with us doing what we do it's training camp week
um one for the huskers and as the stories start to form and the news starts to get out
um there will be more pressers press conference um more comments more statements about
what they think is going on and what they see.
Bach, what, from the fan standpoint,
not from the media standpoint,
but from the fan,
as somebody that's going to root for the Huskers in full.
What is your biggest,
what thing makes you the most excited?
Like what part of Husker football
this version of gives you the most joy?
Well, I mean, I think it might be the obvious answer.
to some, but I think we'll hear from today, Dana Hulgerson,
it will speak today with the Kail Shorts,
but mostly the Holgersen-Royola combination, I think, is the biggest,
you know, when you kind of take a step back,
we look at all the off-season moves.
That's what has the most excitement, I think, upside and reason to believe
that Nebraska could take that big step this year.
That pairing is one that's got the attention of Husker Nation,
but even just nationally, people are interested to see,
if that's if that's going to work so i mean i again quarterback is is often the answer quarterback's the
answer here uh with dylan or ella going into a sophomore year what when you say that that national
people are intrigued about this this combination what do you mean oh just when you read you know
different things across uh you know from national publications or so when they're when they're
talking about nebraska football that's usually within the first sentence or two of their kind of
offseason or reason to look into this team.
So I would say Dana Hogerson's a national name, right?
People know who that is in college football circles.
He's had a wild amount of success back to his OC days,
even early on in his head coaching days.
Obviously, he is where he is now because the last stop,
it didn't end as well as maybe he wanted to do.
But he's known as an offensive mind.
And there's always the intrigue, I think, around Dylan Riala,
since he came to Nebraska just because it was, you know,
he was committed to Ohio State and Jordan and looked like he was going to go
throughout that many do, which is, you know,
pick some of the top schools that are competing for championships.
And now he's here trying to dig Nebraska out of this hole that they dug themselves in.
And so hopefully, you know, between the two of them,
we can have quite an offense this year.
And that's, that's, it's interesting because I think it's,
for a lot of people, it's just kind of a given.
But, you know, when I look at the first two,
years under bat rules, this was a defensive lead unit. And both, both offenses struggled. The first
one, obviously, with turnovers. Now, last year you get Dylan Ryola, maybe things kind of went a little bit
better, but they didn't score more than 25 points per game. That's generally not a very
effective offense. So I think a lot of people think that that's next step will be taken. There's a lot of
reasons to believe, obviously, in the transfer portal at wide receiver, offensive line.
A lot of, a lot of potential there in the tight end room. We know about image.
Johnson coming out running back.
So there's a lot of reasons to believe that offense can take that step forward.
But it better happen.
If it doesn't, I think we're in for another up and down season.
So there's a lot in play there.
If I say the name Dana Holgerson to you, what are we saying?
What's the elevator pitch on why he's interesting?
To me, again, to me, it goes back to his days as an OC, because when he,
was in that position at Texas Tech, at Oklahoma State.
Now, this was, you know, 2000, you know, mid-2000s.
So this was a while ago.
But that's when my first introduction to him was in the Big 12.
And Nebraska fans remember well, obviously from the Mike Leach tree.
But, you know, going over there at Oklahoma State was kind of able to bring that over there.
And then what I think you think of you think of, you know, the West Virginia's success,
the Orange Bowl in year one.
but ultimately it's just the offensive mind that he had for years and years.
He was kind of one of those names when you think about in offensive circles for college football.
But it's interesting too because he's kind of ditched the air attack, you know, air raid offense.
And so I think that's part of the intrigue, too, is to see what this looks like this season.
Of course, we know what it looked like last season.
It was a lot of kind of similar lineups and all that because he just kind of
took over in mid-season, they said they're not going to change much.
I'm still waiting to see if I buy that too much.
Yeah, this is the time.
And it helps the people who are listening are, you fall into one of three pockets.
That you believe everything you're told, none of what you're told.
And then that middle one is, does it resonate with me?
And do I believe it or not, depending on what the source is and what it's about?
right there is one third of husker nation that truly believes they will win 10 plus games
simply because they've done everything right and they're the huskers there is a third that
believes that no they will find a way to lose nine games eight or nine games because that's been
the recent history and you know they've got the trauma the emotional trauma that goes with it
it's the middle group it's the middle third that i find the most intriguing
Because this is the kind of year where the yo-yo begins to happen, right?
Those, the undecided Husker fans consume the daily content.
The first third, they consume it.
It's Kool-Aid and it's sweet and it's good.
It's just going to be good.
There's no other response to it.
Hey, Husker Kool-Aid for the day.
Thank you very much.
I'm going to consume all of it.
I'm going to enjoy all of it.
I don't care about my dietary concerns.
this is what I want.
This is what I what I yearn for.
The other third, hey man, I'm not buying it.
They're looking at the Kool-A drinkers and they're, you, you people are weird.
Like, you know that's going to hurt your blood.
Like, you know you're not, your stomach's going to hurt because of all the Kool-Aid you're consuming.
There's so much sugar in it.
Like, it's not good for you.
We know that's not what you're doing.
It's the middle third people that give me all the feels.
because we know that we don't know.
The middle third,
what are y'all doing?
So text line in full.
Just let me know which third you belong in.
Bach, you're the middle third, right?
Like you're.
Yeah, I'll, I mean, I'll always try to try to,
as much as I can, try to stay unbiased
and give my honest opinion about what's coming.
If I think it's going to be bad,
you know, if I think it's going to be good.
I'll let you know, but.
Well, they weren't happy yesterday with Steve Taylor telling them.
Oh, I know.
Boy, they, ooh, they were, oh, y'all were saucy yesterday.
You all were, look, that, that group, that.
And the funny thing is, is who gets loud, right?
Because if somebody's on, like Peter Cobalt came on yesterday, said, oh, this is a one-lost team.
Yeah.
This is the one-longed thing.
And it made sense.
It made perfect sense.
Yeah.
He's within the program.
But I think he's also honest in that, listen, there are people that root for the Huskers that way.
Like the honesty is, I think they could win them all.
I don't expect them to.
And I think that's a fair statement.
We want them to.
I don't think anybody listening wants them to lose every game unless they're from evil Iowa and then, of course.
I think most people want them to win every game.
but don't expect them to.
And then the middle, who will say somewhere between five and 11 wins,
all possible, can justify all of it, any of it.
And then the seeds, the breadcrumbs that walk from Memorial Stadium out to the rest of the state.
The breadcrumbs that are left that will say, you know what, these breadcrumbs, that's another win.
Like the Holgerson speech today will add more breadcrumbs, right?
Like literally.
Yeah.
Right.
Maybe even more seasoning.
Right.
Anytime they post a video of Dylan throwing a frozen rope to work.
Right?
you just go, oh, that's another win.
Like literally, like, or they show a video of somebody getting blown up, right?
And you go, oh, that's, that's, that's got to be fixed.
So it's always, it's the best time that.
And the Husker fan, Husker media knows it.
Like the people who run social media for Nebraska football, they know, hey man, you know it will be really good today.
Kool-Aid.
Kool-Aid.
Hey, what do we feed them today?
What do we give Jake Bockerman today?
What can we get to make Bach smile?
You know what?
Let's give him some Emmett trucking somebody.
Right?
And then not knowing that, hey, man,
Emmett is running against the fifth team lineback.
He's supposed to truck it.
Like, he's supposed to truck him.
They're never going to show you.
Emmett versus Shavers, Jr.
Like you're not, you're going to see him against McGaighey.
No, no, because you need McGa.
McGa he's part of the Kool-A brigade.
Like you do if you see Sierra Wright pick off somebody, Kool-Aid.
If he picks off Dylan, not cooling.
That's what I say.
You got to be, if you do your scouting or you're looking at people,
you always got to look at the highlight.
You have to look past the highlight tapes.
You can put a highlight.
If anybody plays and they're at the.
D1 level or even if not.
I always say that if you put together my basketball
highlight tape, you might think I'm pretty
good. And then you're going to be pretty disappointed when
you go and watch me play a basketball game. When they're watching
you against a division one player. Just in general,
I can make five plays throughout
a year that look okay.
But that's not what you're getting on a play
to play basis. So the highlight
stuff is incredible, especially for the Kool-Lay.
Like, it's just funny
that you go through. Like
Saturday, you know, you'll get your
first eyes on. Right?
It's a day where you can go and watch them on the field,
which is a whole other thing, right?
And you have to recognize that.
So as a coach, the first day that all the parents come to our scrimmage,
air quotes, scrimmage, right, or our practice.
Because we would invite parents to an open practice on like a Saturday, right?
Or a scrimmage, like a nighttime.
script, right? The first blue versus white, red versus white, or whatever you want to do with.
I also knew that I had to remove some of the, what's the gunk?
It removed some of the gunk. You didn't want bad matchups and you didn't want parents to see
what you weren't good at. I'm going to script the 10 plays that we know how to run
against the four defenses that we've mastered.
Like the four defenses that we're going to run the most,
that's what I need.
And I'm going to tell the officer coordinator and defensive coordinator
are going to get together and say,
hey, man, listen, don't you blitz my number one quarterback?
You can blitz to the number four.
Because what happens is that you're sending Terrell Farley against Bach.
Like, stop doing it.
I'm not going to send Farley against.
for Sean because that doesn't that's not Kool-Aid that's not feeding the middle third I can't do it
and I don't want to do it do you think the big red preview will be with that in mind that
there's on look oh the full script is in play baby listen you're going to have to you will see
I don't know if you're going to go ones versus ones because I don't know the value first you have to
say why are you having the day? What's the day for? What is that day for? That's a fan
appreciation day. That's not a competition day. In theory, it is because if you, if I put you out
in front of how many, how many thousand people do you, would you expect to show up Saturday?
Oh. Like they still tickets for this, right? Or they did, or free tickets. They did this before.
Free tickets, right? I don't, I double check because I want to make sure.
Text line. Let me know how many people showed up at, at the last.
fan appreciation practice day.
But whatever that number is,
then you have to ask the question,
okay, who is this for?
What's it for?
What is the priority?
Why are you having this day?
Right?
And it is to introduce football to the fan base.
It's to reintroduce Husker football to the fan base.
And the business behind it,
Texter says,
$3,500 to $4,000.
Yeah, and there's, tickets are about 20 bucks for an adult.
They're 20 bucks?
11 for youth.
20 bucks.
So, okay, text, how many of you are going to spend the 20 bucks and go watch this?
Bach, if you weren't media, would you spend the 20 bucks?
If I weren't media, yeah, I think I would.
Would you spend the 20 bucks for everybody in your family?
No.
Maria!
Maria!
What are we?
I think you have, I mean, you have to be kind of a football nut to enjoy watching the practice,
don't you?
I don't want to go there and then 30 minutes and be like, okay, when does it start?
You're like, this is it.
This is what it is.
That is hilarious.
When are we leaving?
When are we leaving?
Is this over?
You can't be rushed by non-football fanatics out of practice.
Otherwise, you know?
That is so good.
That is so good.
Nope.
You're not invited.
No, that's the one.
Sadie to be a part of that conversation.
where you go, I'm going to the practice.
Are we going?
No, I'm going.
We aren't.
That is, fuck, that is hilarious, bro.
So,
4,000
Husker fans.
And again, remember
that
a third of those people
are going to leave there
thinking
the husters are going to win the Big Ten.
A third are going to go,
they saw every flaw
right they're not big enough they're not fast enough they're not like they're going to check all the
boxes they're literally going to feed their skepticism and then the middle third are going to be the
truth tellers who okay i need to see what i need to see i need to see how good em it looks because we
don't know i need to see these receivers for the first time because we don't know i need to see the
offensive line because again what who you know we're going to take notes and make mental notes
who are the starters who's first team who second second
And then, oh, why?
Why?
But wait, that third running back looks, actually had, like, broke free and scored a touchdown.
Does that mean they're actually better than Emmett?
Like, what do we see?
If Emmett doesn't score a touchdown, oh, the panic begins, right?
Who's tight in number one?
Tidate in number two, tidy number three.
And what are you going to use them for?
Right?
Because if you go through, in theory, the offensive coordinator knows what he wants to accomplish,
what he wants to show and what he doesn't want to show.
And Bach, a big part of this on every side of the ball and every group is,
you do not want to show your hand.
We know that stuff's going to end up on the Internet, right?
And we know how absolutely paranoid football coaches are at this level.
They do, listen, whatever we show is all we want to show.
We're not going to show you anything.
They don't want any secrets to be let out.
They don't want any special packages let out.
You can't tell 4,000, 5,000 Husker fans not to use their phone and record each play.
They're going to be certain fans who record the whole thing, right?
They're going to zoom in on players, their favorite player or their most suspicious player.
Right?
Right.
And you're going to get, right?
Because if you're in the lower third, if you're in that other third, you are looking for a reason to hate.
like you're the haters are coming the haters are coming what's it's cold winter the haters are coming
like somebody needs to make that graphic it's the winner is coming Oscar haters are on the way
it's it's a full thing so then what are the what the fans want from it and then you know drumstick
you're right the $20 if it was free I'm not
Well, now that I think about it, I'm not sure even if it was free that people would leave happy.
Bach is that?
Because you're paying 20 bucks is the expectation greater?
Do you carry a bigger chip on your shoulder than if it was free?
Well, absolutely.
I think, too, I mean, because the spring game, which didn't happen this year,
went into the Oscar games, is generally $10.
So this is, I think it's supposed to be kind of a look inside the program.
look inside what a practice looks like.
I'm also interested because as of right now,
they're not going, you know, full pads or anything.
They're expected to do that maybe at the beginning of next week.
Are they going to do that for Big Red Preview?
Will people be disappointed if they're not in full pads?
So, I mean, I'm kind of intrigued by that sort of stuff.
But yeah, I mean, I think there's,
I think that you're expected to get,
I think that's what it is.
I think the idea is an inside look at what the team is going into,
going into the season.
A textor says, it's cash grab.
It's cash grab.
Well, beer sold.
Yeah.
First time ever.
Yeah.
First time ever, Huston football beer.
I love that that you can watch a practice and drink beer.
What could go wrong?
What could go wrong?
What could go wrong?
The first time Husker fans see this team is the first time they can drink beer.
I mean, I get alcohol in a game, but in a practice?
This is spectacular.
Like, it's just brilliant.
And I love everything.
And the beer line opens before the practice starts.
So you get a running start.
Like, you're...
Kool-Aid my butt.
This is Budweiser.
Let's get it.
Let's get it.
Oh, man.
So good.
We'll go to break.
More, whatever.
When we come back.
